Wonderfully nostalgic footage. Rare to see a 141/181 combo on a Mk 3 push-pull set. If I recall correctly, they were usually powered by a single 121. I was privileged to have several CIE/IE footplate passes in the 80s and 90s and got to know many of the old drivers - some of whom had started on steam. They'll all be gone now. Scary to think that it's already twenty-five years since you filmed these scenes. Many thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it, yeah there was many old hands from the steam days still plying their trade, some wonderful characters. I was all of 15 when I filmed these clips, seems a lifetime ago now. Loved the baby gms, were always worked hard on these services and made a terrific racket lol. Initially when the push/pulls came on the scene they operated with a single 121 but were grossly underpowered for the job and soon double heading was the norm.
This would have had to run around in Kilkenny and Waterford because the 141s and 071s weren't permitted to propel a push-pull. Usually referred to as a "hauled push-pull", the doors would have been operated from the control car by the train guard.
Thanks. It was just a basic analogue Video8 model I had at the time (Sony FX-400E). The new digital Hi8 format had been out a while but was too costly. I used QTGMC to deinterlace and Neat Video's denoiser to clean up the footage.
Thanks David, the 141s & 181s were built in 1962 & 1966 respectively. Only a handful remain in existence. 141, 142 & 146 are in preservation by the RPSI at Whitehead. The 071s were built in 1976. All 18 are still in full service. The BREL Mark2 coaches were built in the early 70s. All were withdrawn and scrapped apart from 5203 which is preserved by the RPSI and runs on their railtours up north. The Mark 3s were built in 1984, all now withdrawn and scrapped apart from the rake being used on the Belmond Grand Hibernian and Push/Pull DVT 6105 which is preserved at the West Clare Railway along with intermediate coach 7146 & Café/Bar coach 6402.
Great day's great footage
Deceive the 1990s anymore but rest in peace train videos #ThisIsANewTimeOfLife

Great memory
That was some impressive braking there 0:35. Speed he was coming in I thought he was coming through non stop.
That driver, Andy O’Meara had the nickname “notch 9” as it’s said he used to get that little bit extra out of every GM he drove 😂
Andy o Meara driving and Stephen o keeffe is the guard.
brilliant video. good old days :) i dont think they'll never come back
Thanks Liam, no we'll never have an era like that again unfortunately :(
Excellent Footage from the Good Years Danny!😃.
Thanks Alan!
Excellent footage Dan!
Cheers Stevie
Great footage. What type of camcorder did you use? The video quality is excellent, especially for 1994

Super footage Danny, did you record all these yourself ?
Thanks Rob, I did indeed. Was only 15/16 at the time so the amount of night footage shows how much school got in the way of things :P
