  • Irish Rail's General Motors built 201 & 071 class locos hauling freight and BREL Mark 2 & 3 stock on Dublin Heuston - Waterford - Dublin Heuston passenger services in the Thomastown & Bennettsbridge area of Co. Kilkenny during May & June of 1996. The 3,200 horsepower 201s (the most powerful diesel loco to run on the network to date) had only recently been acquired by IÉ from GM in Ontario, Canada and were making their first appearances on the Waterford line.

Thanks Tim. My camerawork was pretty atrocious back then as a teenager but hopefully the content makes up for it!

Cheers Joe, yeah it needed to be with the blind curve towards Legan bridge so as drivers could spot it.

Thomastown doesn't still have 2 platforms does it Danny? Really enjoy this footage, near enough a quarter of a century ago, hope you're keeping well bud:)

Yep it's still there Thomas, cabin and all. Only part of the station that hasn't been touched since I was in short trousers! Loop went in the early 2000s (shifted to Ballyhale).
Like with many was a rough 2020 but still here plugging on. Hope all's good with you.

CIE's Mk 2 stock was vacuum braked wasn't it, as I recall, I never used to think that 201s could haul it, but they're dual braked aren't they.

Mk2s (along with Cravens) were vacuum braked yes. Dual braking systems are on all the 071 & 201 class. The 121, 141 & 181s were also dual braked. The A class (001s) were limited to vacuum braked stock.
