  • 💭 This would be a bit more challenging than I thought it would be. After getting most of Sportster put together.. I couldn't get it started.
    I figured it was complicated like a dead battery, but turns out.. I had a fuel issue. So I kinda wasted $140 on a new battery although the old one was arching pretty bad. Fuel and electrical issues? Perfect combo.
    A long video, but a detailed one getting this bike on the street concluding with my first time on a Sportster. Surprised at the result.. I like it.

    I love the sportster. Super easy to work on. Huge after market, so no shortage of parts. Infinitely customizable. Fun to ride. Sounds amazing with a good exhaust. Looks badass with the right mods.
    You get used to the vibration :)

    Twist the oil dip stick so it can be flush. It's going to keep popping up if it's not in properly

      It does that even when it’s fully twisted. ☹️

      @babybudistmonk 2 месяца назад +1

      I came to say the same thing. It really looks like it isn’t turned into the tank. When the knob is popped up, you should be able to twist the unit into the tank and it will align itself so when you push the knob down, it will be flush with the tank. My sportster had a similar setup.

      Wait! I just used a few curse words at it and got it to go in. Apparently, needed a real good twist. Felt like it was gonna break. I’ve broken enough as is. Whoops. 🫠

    A few notes.
    1. Make sure the front engine mount it tight. It uses a one inch socket and should be torqued between 60-70lbs. If it is loose, there will be a lot of vibration. I have 14 inch t-bars on mine and don't have any vibration at highway speed. Do note that I also have Avon air cushion or whatever grips. The rear engine mount runs through the swing arm.
    2. Keep the RPM's up. Sportsters don't really like to be "lugged". Mine is happy ar cruising at 3,000 rpms or higher. If I'm riding around town, I rarely go past 3rd gear. I don't even hit 5th until I'm doing at least 65. My iron 1200 will turn 4,000 RPM at 85mph all day long and be happy.
    Sportsters are a lot of fun and very reliable. Once you learn to ride it like a hot rod, it is way more enjoyable.
    What you pointed to at the 43:40 mark is the engine anti sway mount or whatever it is called.

    Wow the 3D printer is coming in handy! That is a cool idea I would not have thought of when working on a tank, but it is great.
    I put skateboard grip tape on my pegs, it really does help.

    • @Dragoninja833
      @Dragoninja833 2 месяца назад

      If you learn CAD software, you can use a 3d printer for EVERYTHING. Anything you can imagine, you can make. And I do mean ANYTHING. As long as whatever you make isn't made to get too hot, a 3d printer can make it. The prints are quite durable, too!

    My new to me Dyna is like a big Sportster. The exhaust is Vance & Hines 2 into 1 without heat shields. Looks great, sounds great, but it has melted 2 shoes so far. The 120R is rubber mounted and shakes like crazy at idle. 135HP/139TQ makes it crazy quick! Power wheelies are easy in the 1st 4 gears. Sound like a drag racer.

      I think that woman running harley into the ground is a screw up. They cancelled the sportster evos and started selling all electric brick bikes in california. They come out with two bikes the sportster s and the nightster and theyre arguably better on paper but worse in person and if you ask me the last 2 gens of the indian scout are better. I think harley wouldve been better if they didnt make any brick bikes. They made this subsidary company to sell the brick bikes and i think its sketchy. If it was me id have had trump declare the evo sportster factory as a historical monument and sell the 4 best versions at the same time in a subsidiary that actually has a heartbeat. A soul. Charisma history culture and character. The iron 883 the iron 1200 the 48 and 72. Made to order. Harley went so dowmhill the dealer they had in my area all my life closed down and indian moved right in and im sitting here thinking indian is the one that deserves it now because harley is all throw off their game. If harley didnt stop selling those evo sportsters people wouldnt have been buying scouts as much

    If you do the leather dye, get mink oil. You have to oil it after to seal the dye. Without the mink oil, the dye will leach into your clothes. I have dyed seats before. Also, the dye gets EVERYWHERE! Cover your work area for when you spill, splash stuff. I used a foam pad to dye. Pour some dye into a sacrificial container to make your life easier and less messy.

    I bought a used sportster 48. It shook horribly at cruising speed but was smooth when accelerating. The shaking made it ulmost unridable. It was due to unbalanced wheels. Balanced the wheels properly and it rides smooth as butter. I would check if the wheels are balanced properly on yours. Made a night and day difference

    • @BrandonBicasso
      @BrandonBicasso  2 месяца назад +1

      I had a similar theory since I balance my own wheels now. That shake is nasty until you accelerate out of it.

      Ergonomics feel weird on it tbh. And I’m not a fan of the engine balancing and lack of rubber engine mounts. Lot of shake altho that gives it character.

    I wonder if there are a lot of tiny differences between the Forty-Eight (xl1200X) and the regular xl1200… so that might be some of your fitment struggles with parts. I remember you just calling it an “XL1200” instead of its “48” nickname 🤔. That Harley nomenclature can get you 😅
