- UPDATE: Awesome responses everyone. Thank you so much. A couple updates to share: video from 15:47 to 16:40 was actually flown by another top FPV pilot LSP (lsp181 on youtube)! Sorry about that bro and cheers! Also, I talk about high pass filter required for your 1.3Ghz VTX. That's a "LOW" pass filter for the 1.3ghz VTX. The "High" pass filter is typically used to block spurious emissions from your UHF radio transmitter.
Hey Everyone! We thought this would be fun to produce a new series all about our awesome hobby. We're calling it "FPV Style" and our first episode features a detailed review of the Lumenier QAV400. Each episode will also have a Q&A section and this pilot episode answers the frequently asked question... "What video frequency do you use and why?".
This episode features lots of FPV footage from some of the best pilots around, like JUZ70, MidwestRob and XHover. They were gracious enough to approve the use of their footage and be a part of our first "FPV Style" web episode.
Be sure to "Subscribe" and "Like" if you find value in this medium and be sure to comment on what you would like to see.
Make sure you check out our VentriMedia website as well.
Cheers and have fun all you "FPV'ers"!
Came out really great Dave!! I look forward to more!
great stuff Dave. Really enjoyed it. Just gotta say, the video from 15:47 to 16:40 was flown by LSP (lsp181 on youtube), another top pilot flying the QAV400.
keep them coming bro.
Yes, awesome. I updated the Description above. Thanks for participating Justin. Cheers M8T.
Great job on this show Dave!!! Thanks for all the nice things you said about Lumenier in your piece.
Hey Dave, great show; nice pick on the QAV 400 quad. Looking forward to watching your show, thumbs up!
unusually well done. I especially like the way you presented the QAV 400 review. I'll be waiting for the next episode.
Wow, great Dave. Although we are QAV/Luminere fans the first Episode 1 is worth a share.
Great Information for beginners I really like that you include the basic info.
Awesome. Great info, very well done. Looking forward to more vids....
Great show! Thanks. I am using the QAV500 and even if bigger and less agile, it is a great frame as well.
I will be watting for a FPV googles review. I like the channel.
Nice Dave,I`m just getting into FPV.
Good production also mate.
Love the show. Can't wait for the next episode.
Hey Dave.. great job on the format and post. Love the work.. hey by the way.. u can now get a 1.3ghz module to snap in your fatsharks ;-)
Nice one guys, will stay tuned.....
Congrats Dave! Cool episode.
Nice job on the new series! Good job on the green screen and digital set, nicely done! You look professional or something :)
Well done Dave good show thumps up

This is great Dave, definently the next level and raising the bar. 1700g 400 could use a diet though. :o)
Congrats! Great video. Keep going.
Trolls are not welcomed on this channel. This is supposed to be fun, remember? Goodbye. Good job Dave! This is the best production I have seen so far. I have subscribed to your channel.
Hahaha. It's all good my friend. Cheers and thanks for the thumbs up!
Nice work Dave........
Great vid Dave.
Great first show! Yes, I did Like and Subscribed. Can't wait for your next episode. If you can, maybe invest in a better mic to improve the audio quality.
I love my QAV500 and plan to get the Brushless Gimbal Upgrade soon.
GREAT SHARE... thanks alot, regards- team stealth rotors-
Nice show
Great! Liked and just subscribed although I'm not into Multirotors.
Great show!! Love the virtual set;)
Looking at moving on from my Phantom Naza 2. Is any of it worth moving over onto the QAV400?
First episode of "FPV Style" if you haven't had a chance to view it yet, just an FYI. Cheers.
Been playing with my phantom since Aug 13 and I can see the next steps here and thanks for sharing that good stuff. I was getting kind of warm myself looking at that fine qav 400. Is there any one out there that builds it for you? Thanks Dan of Dan Golden at djiphantom owners group on FB
Nice.. who is doing your recording?
Thank you for your share.
And what's your opinion about QAV400 vs TBS Discovery?
I think it really depends on your goal. The TBS has a lot going for it as well. Ease of finding replacement parts (especially DJI FW arms as an example) and the cost of those parts are a lot less. It has some very nice board integration with component wiring, etc., which makes things nice, clean and consistent. The BIG difference is in vibration isolation, which the TBS Disco has none, unless you upgrade to the TBS Disco Pro with brushless gimbal. Now that is a different story. We haven't tested the Disco Pro yet, but plan to. However, the footage I've seen captured is very impressive.
Is it possible for you to share a build list for that QAV400 you were showing (the FPV Porn one.. lol). I want to build the exact same thing and would love to see a build video of how you set it all up etc. The only thing I will want to add that I didn't see is GPS for hold etc.
Hey James. Here is a current build list on my QAV400.
Frame: Lumenier/GetFPV QAV400
Motors: Lumenier FX2216-9 1100kv
ESC's: Lumenier 30a - SimonK Firmware
FC: DJI NAZA M v2
Props: APC 8" 8x4.7 Slow Fly props
FPV Gear: 5.8Ghz vtx with FatShark Preds 5.8Ghz Vrx
OSD: Team Blacksheep (TBS) CORE
Gimbal: Tarot 2-Axis Brushless Gimbal
Camera: GoPro3 Black - 1080p 60fps
Dave Slack Also James, for the exact build on the QAV400 featured in the Quadcopter Porn section, hehe, that is X-Hover's build which he goes into detail on this video. It's excellent: ruclips.net/video/8FF_ulB_TV0/видео.html
great video, nice production, although I have to say you are favouring lumenier a little to much, no doubt that the qav 400 is awesome, but you compared their esc's to stock turnigy ones when you could of flashed them with simon k firmware and found them to compare as equal for a lot cheaper, or even better flashed some hobbyking ones. also in my opinion t-motors must trump lumenier motors anynday of the week, of maybe even lumenier have just repackaged the t-motors with their branding... sorry for being a troll, like I said great video
Thanks for the great feedback Dave. I really didn't mean to come off as a "Lumenier Fanboy", but we really have been very impressed with the combination. This was our first go at this, so I will definitely be more cognicant of that going forward. You are correct that we could have (and we do) flash the Plush's or the HK 30's and got the same results, but we find a lot of questions around "can we get Simonk flashed ESC's out of the box" as many people don't want to manually do this themselves. Again, didn't mean to sound like a Lumenier Fanboy. haha. Yes, the Lumenier 2216-9's are re-branded T-Motors but have the mid-grade bearing set, not the high end set. So, they're a step down from the T-Motors from that perspective but also 30% less in cost. :-)
Dave Slack Fair enough
Good start! I must say that I agree with Dave Pitt here. There are known reliable alternatives to some of the components: instead of Tiger 1100kv, there's the SunnySky x2216-1100 that works really well, there's also the SimonK pre-flashed AfroESCs. The Lumenier SimonK-flashed ones against the Plush isn't really a fair comparison.
As for frequencies, your background is showing HD footage from GoPro and the likes. It would have been better to show the video link of each one and their limitation as fpv pilots would be experiencing it, around trees and stuff.
Carpe Luce Great suggestions! I don't take any of this personally team, so keep the comments and recommendations coming. I did however, point out that there were certainly good motor alternatives in the $20-$25 range, and in fact one of the bloopers had me mentioning the SunnySky's but I screwed up so many different takes, that the final one I chose to include didn't have that comment. hahaha. Like I said, this isn't a business (yet), just for fun and share my experience, etc. Cheers.
Dave Slack
The Lumenier FX series motors actually use the highest bearing available from Tmotor, the FM series offer the less expensive version and mid-grade bearing.
who took the shot at 12:20?
Hi Dave, there is a new 1.2mhz system for the Dominator! bonafidepirate has the system working now! check it out,it works great. good video, and have a good day.
That's what I've heard. Just got a couple email responses saying the same thing. I'll update that point at the beginning of Episode 2 next week.
Hey could you look at the TBS DISCO PRO?
I actually do plan on reviewing the TBS Disco Pro. Go ahead and send an email to Trappy at TBS through their contact page. Send them to my channel and website VentriMedia. Tell him to send me one and I'll do a full review and test out some various combinations, etc. That's how we'll keep these episodes coming. haha. I have some other episodes already planned and starting production. Cheers.
1.3g video and 2.4g control requires a low pass filter not high pass, I like your idea of a episode tho, good job :)
You are correct. Hahaha. I just Bumped your post up. Low Pass Filter for the 1.3g Transmitter, not high pass filter. I'll include that update/correction in Episode 2. Great feedback!
is this still the case if your using circular polorised antennas for 1.2-1.3 and linier on the 2.4?
Dave Pitt
Im not 100% certain , but im prety sure yes, its because the close proximity of the Video TX to the Control RX. the low pass goes on the video TX as it outputs to the antenna
Hey Dave, quick question. I'm flying the HT-FPV with Turnigy 28-26 1200kv motors and Turnigy speed controllers. It's developed a really bad shake and I can't figure out why, any ideas? Thanks!
I would remove your props, check them for balance. Also, spin up each motor and use a smartphone vibration test or bottle cap with water to see if a motor has become highly unbalanced due to a crash, etc. Lastly, I would check the motor mount plates on the HT-FPV as I had a couple "develop cracks" that were almost impossible for me to see easily, but when inspecting closely, I could see the cracks. Replaced those plates and voila, no more vibes and horrible video. :-)
Now, if you are referencing "shaking" in it's "flight", like violent wobbles, etc., then certainly check your GAINS/PID's on your FC. Also, check to make sure your ESC end-points are "reset", just to make sure.
