Am watching 8 years later, ISIS were actively gaining territories these years, I was also busy in my services, Somali military operations fighting against Alshabaab terrorists and liberating Swath land in a harsh time, I'm impressed and amazing how Al Jazeera satisfies it's listener's, fascinating well prepared documentary, great channel, thank you so much.
can't wait for the second part... my God! if any body is still left ignorant of what has really happened and is happening in Iraq then they're forever destined to remain ignorant about it!... the perfect documentary.

Not true. The actions of Bremmer from the United States caused most of this. He disbanded all military personnel...which were career military people and declaired all debts settled which enraged the wealthy. Put those two together and you have a well funded death machine on top of the Middle East being a 3000 year long death circus.

I have watched documentaries on subjects like these, done by CNN and a few others , but Al Jazeera really captures everything and presents it really well.
The narrator says at 20:21 Nouri al-Maliki became Iraq's first democratically elected prime minister and then the American says at 21:22 "we SELECTED him to be prime minister in 2006".hmmmm lol something a bit fishy here.

I was wondering if I was the only person who caught that. It’s not shocking, the US has a history of propping up nobodies thinking they’ll remain loyal. But they’re usually at least a little more subtle than that.

+masiwa comorya I think aspects of Islam do lend themselves toward radicalism and violence, but it's hardly unique in that regard, Christianity & Judaism can and were used just as effectively. The reasons they (for the most part at least, there are examples of extreme Christian/Jewish violence today) aren't like that now are myriad and mainly political/cultural. I see no reason why the middle east doesn't have the potential to undergo a sort of enlightenment like Europe did, but it's kind of difficult when you're being bombed, invaded and having governments overthrown and replaced by puppets all the time. I'm not saying it should become like the west, just ditch the fundamentalism.

Some similar material appears in CNN's recent "Blindsided: How ISIS Shook The World" (available on Daily Motion) especially the Camp Bucca disaster. This doc is more nuanced, detailed and (with part two) considerably longer. Popular mainstream debate (if you can call it that) and reportage on this intractable issue is clouded with jingoistic retaliatory fervour and ultimately remains dangerously devoid of critical historical analysis.

The US and EU provided ISIS with money, weapons, vehicles! A coalition of 65 countries couldn't do anything against them untill the day Russia step in.
1 country did more damage to ISIS within first 3 months than this so called coalition during 4 years. That's all you need to know about coalition and the US "help".

the ISIS was created by Syrian Regime for weaken the Syrian opposition. If ISIS was never formed the civil war ends in 2013 with a FSA victory. If ISIS was never formed the US armed FSA could easily defeat ASSADS loyalists.

Mowaffak is an artist at making himself the hero prophet in every single critical moment of the past. Man, it's a good thing the US left Iraq so that he and his government could turn it into the cultural uptopia free of mismanagement that it is today.
If human beings put their efforts into living by spiritual principles (kindness, loving, tolerant, compassionate, empathetic) and less into religion and it's rules and expectations that were created by man to control people using fear and shame, the world would be a much nicer place to be. Religion has become nothing more than another means by which humanity can separate and divide ourselves from one another. There is only one God. What mask we put on it is immaterial. Unfortunately, human beings in our inability to see clearly that we are all one, and all God's children, has somehow been fooled into believing that we all believe in different Gods. Our imperfect humanness has turned religion into something that divides us and something in which we create pain and suffering for those who are in the minority considering what part of the world in which you live. Religion has become a means to suffering. It's too bad we can't just all focus our attention inward into what we need to change within ourselves instead of trying to change others into what we think they should be. Instead of trying to get people to see the world the way we see the world. Instead of trying to get people to accept the God that we accept as the one true God. What's sad is that everybody makes their choices and decisions based on their past experiences, their religious indoctrination as children, their world view that's been shaped by their experiences. The result is that each person fighting and dying to support what they think is right, truly believes that they're fighting for what's right. Perception is reality. We all perceive the world and God differently because we've all experienced life differently. I can't expect people from another part of the world to see the world the way I see the world because that would require that they have experienced life the way I've experienced it. Of course Iraqis are angry at America for what America did to their country in our attempts to oust Saddam from power. The US's intention was good. To oust a dictator who had oppressed his people for decades. It was America's intention to help Iraqis. To give Iraq to it's people. To give Iraqis the ability to self determination and to give them hope for the future. There was a lot of short sightedness. Of course those who fought American troops did so because they perceived Americans as an occupying force. They also questioned our motives and intentions. How could they trust that this was really about freeing Iraq from a dictator? Was it really about oil and about a hidden objective? Human beings are selfish and when you inject the imperfect human condition into the mix, they you have the recipe for conflict. Al Qaeda was a response to the US abandoning Afghanistan after the Soviets withdrew in 83 and left Afghanistan in shambles. The US Congress voted against helping the Afghan people rebuild their roads, hospitals, schools, infrastructure. It was a very clear indicator that American involvement in Afghanistan wasn't really about helping the Afghan people against Communist aggression, but rather to stop what the US government perceived was Communism sweeping westward. It was evidence that the US was only funding Afghan militias because of selfish and self serving interests. OBL saw this clearly after the US abandon the Afghan people and that's when radical Islamic fundamentalists turned their attention and anger towards the west. Also, the US support for Israel and the US's disinterest in stopping Israeli's from continuing to build on Palestinian land has also not helped the perception by Muslims that American involvement in the Middle East is fair and impartial. With the American occupation of Iraq and the subsequent destruction by the many groups vying for power of Iraq, groups like ISIL were destined to flourish and prosper. The whole thing is a mess and it's sad that as human beings we've all failed to protect the truly innocent and helpless, which our the women and children. So much suffering and so much hatred. And it's all justified with religion. If only we could all just get back to living selflessly and caring about each other. Looking at each other from the perspective of the challenged and struggles we face. As much as I hate groups like ISIL, I have to admit that in their hearts they're only doing what they feel they need to do to protect their interests. They're doing what they do out of desperation. They feel that it's their only means by which to take what they need for survival. The Iraqi government alienated the Sunni population and rising up against what they believed was a oppressive Iraqi Shi'a government was they're last and only option. Again, if we could all just get back to this understanding that we're all one and we're all created and children of the one true God, whatever you call Him/Her/It, they world would be a much nicer place to live. Unfortunately, I think there's too much water under the bridge for that ever to happen. Sad...

A. Fight proxy war (as in the case of Afghanistan with islamists)
B. To prevent democracy and autonomy so as to control price of oil, minerals and other resources as well as geopolitical advantage. (As in KSA With their theocracy, in Iraq with Saddam, in Libya with Ghaddafi, etc).
C. To keep the nationalist dictators they’ve selected in check using Islamist groups as a threat to their power.
D. To divide and rule
E. As in case of Islamists- to destabilise the region to gain control of resources, fight proxy war, gain geopolitical advantages
There are other factors. To understand US strategy in the region wrt islamists, I recommend “Secret Affairs: Britain’s Collusion with Radical Islam, by Mark Curtis. It’s been very well researched, based on declassified government documents, accounts from high officials in Security, historical documents, etc. It’s been praised by Chomsky, Pilger and others. Really worth a read to fully grasp why there is such a proliferation of islamists. Britain’s strategic model is identical to that of the US in so far as supporting islamists go. Unfortunately this Al Jazeera is just more obfuscation.
I believe people have a natural proclivity toward moderation, to wanting freedom and progress, and toward greater spirituality. Under 1000 years of Islamic rule in many regions accords the world, Islam was practised in a spiritual way with great emphasis on debating ideas and encouraging progress, when there wasn’t war or great strife. People reach for a more ossified religiosity when they feel their lives spinning out of control since it gives them a psychological sense of structure when all else is in chaos.
Then take responsibility of your own Fights, Government, and People. Don't invite other countries to fight your battle then cry victim. You don't get to do that especially when the USA spend Trillions, used our American citizen military, and gave you Arms. Stop the bull!

Call it conspiracy theory. But I was 20 year's old, when the invasion took place. Prior to the invasion of 2003. I never heard of suicide bombings, car explosions on the news. fair enough Saddam was no angle but the dude had grip on his country. therefore the obvious conclusion is that the invasions brought destruction & chaos!! on a different note. I know & most people see that 911 was inside job. But for argument sake lets just that it wasn't. the question we have to ask ourselves is. did those aircraft took off from Iraq. were the terrorist Iraqis, the answer is NO. then what reason did the coalition forces especially the U.S had, to invade Iraq. if Iraq production was potato & carrot, do you think that they'll be there...

+Abdi Duale To large extent. the invasion was based on the claims by Rāfid Aḥmad Alwān (an Iraqi citizen living in Germany at that time) that Iraq posseses WMD. German and the UK's secret services warned the USA about the authenticity of the claims. So basically bad US intelligence. One would think that the USA with all their spy tools would know better. They also thought that al qaeda had huge several stories high command centers and millitary bases drilled into some mountains in Afganistan. Saddam was a bad apple, he gassed the Kurds and that alone was probably good reason to get him out but as you say he had a grip on things. Who would know it'll turn into this madness? Anyway the world is a mad place. Saudi Arabia where people are being crucified and stoned serves a term in the UNHR council until next year. Go figure.
