    A good stretch that helped resolve my issue costochondritis is to lay on a sport roller or plastic log. The log is placed parallel to the spine. Lay on it with a pillow supporting ones head. Let arms rest freely on each side. Do this simple technique for about 10 minutes each day. I had the pain in my chest for three years. I finally got relief without medication. At first I thought it was a heart problem with a trip to the ER. I was told it wasn't my heart. It was diagnosed either muscular or skeletal. Still no resolution. I went to family doctor. They told maybe it's GERD. I was put on an acid blocker for three months. I still would get the pain. Finally I discovered by stretching my chest opening it up really works. I'm finally pain free..

      Try the Backpod or anything similar with a curve. It will hurt at first but wriggling your back on it does adjust the back rib hinges. Goodluck!

    I just got diagnosed with this today. I was giving my 5 year old a piggy back ride for about a half a mile, I'm extremely active at 37. Well I thought I was having a heart attack last night. It really took my breath away. I also push mowed the lawn as fast as I could immediately after I cam home. I was trying to beat the rain. No other health issues. Ugh. Thank you for the insight.
    The pain really did take my breath away and felt like I had 2 heart attacks, one immediately after another.

      @@peacenlove3225 Hey. Sorry to hear you are in agony. I do understand. Tell your chiropractor to check to see if all of your ribs: front, sides and back are in place. Adjusting these ribs back into place does help. Let me warn you that adjusting these ribs hurts a lot while they do it. Also, the adjustment won't stay for long. You need to stretch the ribs so they will relax. Get a Backpod. This is what is recommended specifically for costochondritis. I am getting one. Cheaper on EBay. You CAN get better. Costochondritis can be healed. Keep us posted!

    Costrochondritis+ anxiety= panic attack. People may interpret this as a sign of MI especially if its on the left side of chest.

    • @TakeTheShot28
      @TakeTheShot28 6 лет назад +5

      Costochondritis + Anxiet + Heart Palpitations = a simulated heart attack. I was taken out of school my senior year (5 years ago) due to a combination of all of these, and ended up having a 2 and a half week stay at the hospital cause no one could figure out what was happening. Scariest year of my life.

    • @Saffrone221
      @Saffrone221 6 лет назад

      Kyle Mabus yeah it was panic attack. I became a hypochondriac when i started med school. I learn so much about the anatomy of the body and how it works that even a small pain on my neck and my body will panic as if i thought i was having a stroke. I learned its GAD( Generalized Anxiety Disorder) you have an overly stimulated brain producing too much Serotonin or Dopamine caused by prolonged stress or anxiety. One time i woke and i felt a pain on my left side of chest. I was calm but my body went awall. I took my bp cuff. My bp was 200, tachycardia, cold sweat, graying vision, and finally i pass out. I woke up feeling fine. i thought i was having a MI but i learned it was rib pain because our ribs have nerves in between them and causes these sharp pain. I think it was because the lain started on the left side which my mind though is the location of my heart. So that thought alone and my panic attack just exploded. History of prolonged anxiety triggers the brain to overproduce stimulating hormones that stimulated the symphatetic n.s

    • @AllenBonillaDC
      @AllenBonillaDC  6 лет назад +3

      Yes, I would say this condition is commonly associated with anxiety and panic attacks. I imagine this may have to do with the fact that it affects areas involved with breathing and the heart though there may be more to it.

      Allen Bonilla thanks doctor. Honestly i dont go to my doctor lately because they over expound the problem with more test and visits. I hate to say this but in America professionals in any field will rather treat a condition rather than solve it. Dermatologists and Walk-in doctors love screwing ppl. The only person i trust is my dentist. In irrelevant news. Did you know there is a cure for Cancer and it was created in Cuba. The controversy is somewhere hidden and it is not disclosed because it will cripple the pharmaceutical corporation and the need to spend billions on cancer treatments. If your interested look it up doc. It has something to do with a mutated B or T cell that is triggered with chemo and attacks specifically cancer cells only. I read it is being tested in Britain

    Hi thanks for the video!!! I've been suffering with Costochondritis for 9 months now... has wrecked my life. I was super active for 26 years and have never had an issue in my life. I don't even understand how this happened!! Completely debilitating. Every doctor I saw said yeah it comes and goes. Just take nsaids or we can give you something stronger. Ugh!!! I don't want a bandaid I want to stop this!! I thought I was dying for the first 2 months having a heart attack daily 24/7 until I googled my symptoms and self diagnosed... finally found a doctor who agreed with me. I have been doing everything to combat this... stretches, the BackPod, NSAIDs, PRP injections, chiropractic, acupuncture, massage therapy, physical therapy and nothing has worked... the BackPod was the only help to me!! It helped stretch me out in a relaxed manor and give my chest some opening as well as my back. Your video was interesting and I wished you touched more on what adjustments help... I have horrible stabbing back pain... horrifying clavicle and first rib pain and swelling (TIETZE syndrome)... and neck pain and headaches that have been off and on. Thank you for your input on the issue. I'm actually getting a steroid shot for it in the swollen clavicle to calm it down.. it's been raised for 5 months.

    My primary care doctor just blows off my horrendous rib spasms. Chiropractors say they have put my thoracic rib back in place but it never stops the pain. Massage therapists help for a minute and then it comes right back. No one has ever done a palpitation, rib joint imaging on me. What kind of doctor should I go to that will get to the bottom of this. I think it is thoracic 8 on the right. I had a severe injury that caused it. WHY don't doctors take this serious? They act likeI am exaggerating when I say the pain is on the 1-10 chart a #65. Unsustainable.

      As I stress in this video, properly diagnosing and treating costochondritis is not commonly taught in schools nor commonly done in practice. You need to find someone well versed, experienced, and confident in this specific condition. I recommend checking yelp and other online reviews for the words "costochondritis", "rib pain", "sternum pain", or "intercostal neuritis" and then calling the office to ask if they are familiar with your problem BEFORE visiting any particular pracitioner.

I was doing rear neck shoulder raises (stupid) without warming up and heard/felt a POP on the way down with the bar!!! But being an idiot continued working out through the pain!! I’ve been dealing with this issue for 20 years, when it first happened I would get a very sharp pain across my sternum and would hurt to breathe or move... also, if I stretched enough I would hear a pop/snap and it would kind of alleviate it, nowadays it’s a cross between sharp pain or burning in the sternum area, sometimes left of center and sometimes across the left or right pec. I’ve been told by my MT that she feels a muscle knot near my left shoulder blade. I’m in the Toledo OH area but have not found anyone that can help. My doc says to take alleve, but I try to avoid NSAIDs.
    Forgot to add, this has caused a number of anxiety/panic attacks also! Been to the ER a number of times because of this, luckily all tests come back fine and I get the catch all diagnosis of anxiety.

      I have had Costochondritis since I was 16, I am not going on 23. Costo has a tendency to either leave and stay gone on its own, or it can stay and not really cause issues for months on end. My experience is as follows, I have spotting pains in my left ribcage almost constantly, it will go away at times but will never fully resolve and disappear, I can not lay on my left side for long periods of time, I also can not lean to left for a long time, when I do either of those it tightens and feels as if I'm having a heart attack. Pain on left side to middle chest, and middle between shoulder blades Severe pain in left side when breathing, I can not sit or lean to far forward or else it causes a flair. It seems as if it picks and chooses when and how long it'll affect you. Certain things trigger it and if you can figure out what it is you're doing to make it flair, you can avoid severe flair ups. I've found that heavy lifting and causing discomfort to the area affected are the normal triggers, but it can do what it wants when it wants. If you roll up a towel and lay it parallel to your spine and put your arms out and stretch it'll relieve most of the tension for the most part. IT is only a temporary solution, but until there's a permanent solution this is your best bet.

      The good news is that it sounds like they have ruled out heart problems and the current state of testing is good for those kind of things. Unfortunately, there are no good tests for costochondritis though it sounds like your doctor wasn't going to bother anyhow. As mentioned in this video, see if any healthcare practitioners in your area specifically mention costochondritis in their website or social media, ask for referrals and call/ask before your appointment if they are familiar with the condition.

    Hello...i have the usual syptoms of costo all over my ribs front and back and near the heart line. The worst area is the floating ribs on the side which is constantly stabing and burning into me from both sides. Any kind of lifting of any object causes an imbalance and get stabbing , tight pains. I feel as if im bolted down on both sides under the 10th ribs. Iv had 2 chiro sessions which focus on the back ribs only. Do you have any advice please?

      Hard for me to say too much without checking you but make sure your chiro is aware of where your pain is distributed and ask him/her to check the costochondral and sternocostal junctions.

    What would you do if a patient with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and this condition. I'm curious because I have both and was told to go to a massage therapist for my pain. I'm not aloud to go to a regular chiropractor anymore because it's doing more damage on my body.

      One of the things I practice with all my adjustments is specificity.
      This means I spend time making sure I'm on the exact right joint and doing the adjustment in the exact right direction.
      This is different than the common adjustments you see where they often crack the neck both ways, the low back both ways then crack everything up the middle which in my opinion makes conditions of instability and/or hypermobility (as is the case in EDS) worse.

    Hello, I am a sports massage therapist working in a physiotherapists clinic. I met a client with what seems to be costochondritis but I am researching and reading on the subject. Do you think a scoliotic spine could lead to this pathology?

    • @AllenBonillaDC
      @AllenBonillaDC  7 лет назад +3

      James Volel besides the dysfunction at the costochondral junction there is nearly always a postural component to this issue. If you don't address what is happening at the spine (scoliosis, kyphoscoliosis, hyperkyphosis) then the problem will be harder to correct and more likely to relapse.

I agree that there was probably something but in a case like mine, i have dealt with this for over 10 years and I have been in extreme pain for a year and a half. I have done everything that you have discussed but since I just stumbled on this diagnosis three days ago, I am learning. Thank you for your wisdom and incite.

    I have popping on sternoclavicular/1st rib area and crunching on both costal sides of chest. It seems to me like it is first rib popping in and out. Could costochondritis cause that?

    • @AllenBonillaDC
      @AllenBonillaDC  5 лет назад +1

      I wouldn't say it that way, that costochondritis "cause" the popping, nor necessarily the other way around; but it is likely that the popping and the costochondritis are both symptoms that manifest from the same cause which could be called mechanical rib cage dysfunction.

      Allen Bonilla no they don’t seem to get it at all .. I’ve had it for about 7 years .. idk when I’m gonna get a flair up and when I do it lasts longer than 6 weeks, my primary physician seems to get it . I went in asking when it will stop (after about 5 weeks in bed) he asked how long the flair up has be going on , I said about 5 weeks and he said it’s not over yet, give about another 3 weeks see how I feel. Only remedy I have is heat , bed rest, sling my arm..
      Why does condritious only seem to effect the left side of the rib cage? Is there an answer or that coz I haven’t found it yet..

    Hey, Dr.Bonilla, I'm a 21 year old male suffering with Costochondritis.
    My problem with costochondritis is not so much the pain in the chest (although it still hurts my chest until I "pop" it by pulling my shoulders back) but my upper back/ neck / shoulder pain that seems to be very subtle but ongoing most of the time (continuous muscle knot feeling like you said). What would you do for this as I've talked to primary doctors and chiropractors that could not do anything for me. Thank you so much for the videos.
    PS: Would you say that "popping the chest" is bad or okay?

    • @AllenBonillaDC
      @AllenBonillaDC  7 лет назад

      I would say the worst thing about "popping the chest" is that is means there is some problem your body is dealing with or trying to fix. Unfortunately there are many problems that our bodies cannot fix internally which is why a skilled outside practitioner is needed. As I mentioned in the video, the best course of action is to look specifically for practitioners (a good chiropractor would be best though you may find a good PT or even massage therapist) who is experienced and comfortable treating this condition. When the problem gets fixed the urge to "pop" it (and the pain) will go away.

    I have every symptom to conclude I might be suffering from this. I'm currently at the hospital because this flare up is the most painful it has ever been.
    Wity that said, I have one more unusual symptom that initially made me think that my issue is "slipping rib syndrome".
    My lowest rib on the front side click in and out and it is obvious to people I show. It actually freaks people out. When I get a flare up I put all my weight on that rib on an object that will allow for myself to pop it in. This seems to be where it should be naturally because it seems to help. Thoughts on this? Thank you so much.

    • @AllenBonillaDC

      That's actually not an unusual symptom to have with costochondritis. Many people will experience frequent clicking that goes along with their symptoms. We often get similar clicking during treatment for this condition which may be a rough version of what you are experiencing.

I then went to my doctor the very next day and he stated I had Costochondritis and gave me a shot for inflammation. The shot has helped ease the pain in my sternum, but I still feel a sharp pain on my back mid spine. Also, my sternum still hurts, and when I move certain movements I feel like it pops? From the way you did it it sounds like it could have been the rib joint(s) or a muscle tear but if you feel it in the back as well it's more likely a rib. A good chiropractor should be able to tell right away and know what to do. I wish you the best.

    I have had costo for nearly two years now. I was VERY active before, running and lifting a lot of weights and upper body exercises as well, and had a job that used my upper body in. After my costo started, I had to completely stop lifting anything over 10lbs and quit that job. If I did lift anything heavy, I would get a flare-up for weeks and could barely sleep,let alone do any cardio.
    Has anyone else had this experience? If so, how long did it take you before you could use your upper body again (for exercise)? I'm just scared to even try at this point because getting laid up for weeks at a time isn't something I can afford anymore.

      I've had Costo for nearly 7 years, it will come and go as it pleases, you can do certain stretches to alleviate some pain. I would look some tutorials up on here, they are not a permanent solution but if you'd like to be active doing the stretches before any rigorous activity is your best bet for keeping pain to a minimal. Avoid laying on the side of your chest that is most affected, leaning to that side can also care it to flare up, try sitting in straight posture as much as possible. These are the only tips I can give, Hope it helps!

    I have been facing this same problem on the right side of my chest for like 6years now. x-ray shows nothing. My doctors don't take the matter seriously and now affecting the right side of my upper back. The funniest thing is that I never knew I have Costochondritis until today. I'm still feeling the pain but no solution.

      No solution to date. I went to two different hospitals a few days ago and all the doctors did be to put me on a painkiller. I don't if there is a permanent solution to this.

    I think i might have this problem. I have pinching pain on 3rd rib just above the hearth. I went to the doctors because i thought it was the hearth. EKG was good, still waiting for ultrasound. I cant lay down on my back at all as the pain increases and most of the time i cant lay on my left side as well. Obviously any strain and i get that pinching pain. I do a lot of cycling so it might be the posture on the bike that caused it to me, or not. Its always worst 1 day after a bicycle ride. Probably because of heavy breathing since rib cage moves the most in those circumstances.

    I've seen 4 different doctors and had many, many tests done and still cannot figure out what is wrong with me. 2 days after a very low impact workout, I get the pain described on this video. My pain is so extreme! I have to take at least 2 days off from work. It was until today that my G.I doctor mentioned this. Could excersise cause a "flare" of costo??

    • @AllenBonillaDC
      @AllenBonillaDC  6 лет назад +2

      Yes, a flare can come from a sneeze, reaching "wrong," laying on your side, or just out of the blue. A workout can definitely precipitate a flare-up.

    20 visits to the hospital over a period of 1 year with 11 different doctors all telling me foolishness and pain every other day especially just b4 bed that frightened the sh!# out of me!! its only 2 days ago I found out I had this. why the hell was this soooooo difficult to diagnose! !!????

    • @AllenBonillaDC
      @AllenBonillaDC  5 лет назад

      I feel like many doctors these days rely almost exclusively on lab tests and imaging and there are no good lab test or imaging for this condition. This is why it is important to find a doctor with good palpation skills.

      Yes ... yes it does ... crazy that you say this ... I’ve dealt with this about a year and half ago and it came back 7 days ago .. i feel like when I smoke weed it irritates my chest in that area .. when you smoke weed you can get paranoid . Now ya heart starts racing and the area of the costochondritis starts to irritate .. now I’ve been smoking everyday since the first time and nothing ... it just came back out of no where 4 days after my birthday .. I went to the ER 3 times in one day ... a record lol they kept me over night and ran every test for my heart , lungs and liver and it all came back negative ... I had to stop smoking weed until this heals up ... they gave me 2 pain meds and a steroid meds ... I’ve been taking them for the past 3 days and I feel a bit better But I want this to just go back to normal and never feel it again smh worst feeling I’ve ever had in my life smh

    4:00 altho that analogy is very good for diagnosing cars with expensive part. U dont want to put your heart and lungs on the back burner as without those our ribs are as good as dog food

      dblock2626, thanks for your comment. I agree. If I suspect that someone's issue is due to heart or lungs then we will refer them out to a specialist immediately.

I don't know how to fix it😩, but it is so annoying! Also, I feel pain when I pressure on my chest center, like a strange bone pain.

    did you have to describe what a rib cage is by saying like halloween, as if we dont kinow what a rib cage is and need the word halloween to work it out? I guess you think we are all a bunch of 1 year olds looking for info on costochondritis, ,, gaga

    • @AllenBonillaDC
      @AllenBonillaDC  4 года назад

      The reason I say it that way is because when I say ribs, most people think only of their lower anterior rib cage area. I want people to think of the entire structure and providing a vivid memorable example helps with that.

      A competent, specific chiropractor should be able to help. Personally I am trained in Gonstead and Advanced Biostructural Correction techniques. I'll see if I can get a video up demonstrating the process.
