    I literally was in ER 2 hours ago. I have had this for like 10 years, literally as long as I can remember. I was so scared for so many years that I never mentioned it. I am watching and reading everything, I have never felt such relief. I thought I for sure was going to die any day. I have 2 children and wife. I really can’t believe this.

    Is such such a horrible pain that In experience everyday for a few years and nothing seems to help. I’m doing physio therapy at the moment and new New Years resolution is to get better, i cannot go another year living with this pain.
    I’m “pushing” myself to do chest exercises 2 to 3 a week even that the pain can be unbearable, I just can’t wait until I can fully breath again.
    I will try some of this exercises.

    This is probably one of the best videos I've seen on this condition. While I have never been officially diagnosed with costo (after multiple trips to the ER thinking this is a heart issue and told it's an msk issue due to stress and anxiety) I'm at my wits end - I've had this pretty acutely for about 4-5 months now - I cannot work out anymore, or drum with my band - even walking sets it off - I have developed a pretty severe anxiety disorder as a result as well thinking I'm going to drop dead from a heart attack throughout the day - good times! I'm finally going to go see a chiropractor this week - praying they can help me with this horrible condition - not fun to live with on a daily basis! Thank you for this video - it gives me hope that I can be pain free one day - I can literally push on parts of my sternum and the pain is pronounced - and it radiates up my chest too and into my back too - pretty darn sure this is what I am dealing with.

      @@DrAlexVidanDC it's a horrible condition to live with :( I did go see a DC on Thursday - did a full physical history on me and then did a physical test - my neck, upper back and even lower back are in a mess - he ordered a bunch of x-rays to be done and I am following up with him on Monday to see what exactly is going on. He wants to go over the x-rays first before diagnosing me - but it was a good appointment and one I felt good leaving that I feel I'm actually going to hopefully get some answers and treatment options on what is going on with me.

    Hi Doc! Great video thanks for the advice. I'm in the UK and i had all these symptoms and pains for 3 weeks, multiple trips to ER where i thought i was having heart attacks and then in the 4th week i was diagnosed with costo. I spent those 3 weeks working out, doing push ups and losing weight as i thought it was my heart but only aggravated it! I purchased the back pod which has helped a bit so far! Feels great whilst i use it anyway...My question is, how soon can you start doing these other stretches? Should you rest fully for a certain amount of time and ice to reduce inflammation BEFORE you start trying to do all these stretches or can i incorporate them into the daily routine right away? Thanks!

    • @DrAlexVidanDC
      @DrAlexVidanDC  4 года назад

      Good questions @Barbz. It really depends on what your treating doctor prescribed. For some of my patients I will have them do these exercises while they’re actively having problems but there are some that I do not want them to do the exercises until after I have completely resolved the issue through specific adjustments. Hopefully this helps you get a better understanding with your complaints. I’m glad to hear that at the hospitals they found that it wasn’t anything to do with your heart though.

    How would a chiropractor go about determining if you have rib misalignment? Physical examination? I am 32 years old and I exercise regularly and would be considered to be in good shape. I've had sternum swelling (rib 2 area on sternum) and pain while doing certain things (twisting, turning over while sleeping, certain movements, etc) for 6 months now, initially noticing it while I was playing a lot of tennis in the summer. I got x-rays done with my doctor and everything came back normal. He put me on anti-inflammatory meds for a few weeks, but the pain came back right after I was done. I plan to see a chiropractor as my next set of actions, as well as doing your exercises/stretches.

    • @DrAlexVidanDC
      @DrAlexVidanDC  3 года назад

      @BenStehr I'm happy to help. Yes, a thorough history and physical exam are going to be best for your chiropractor to determine if there's a structural issue with your rib. Glad to hear that the x-rays came back normal. I hear from patients that it can be frustrating to not find anything on x-ray, but the good news is that it's not something that's a larger issue. The inflammation can come from an underlying structural issue so the anti-inflammatory meds not resolving the problem may make sense. Make sure that the DC that you see has experience in evaluating and treating rib misalignments.

    • @DrAlexVidanDC
      @DrAlexVidanDC  4 года назад

      @alsiraj007 I'm happy to help however I can. You'll want to consult with your doctor about that for you specifically. For my patients I typically want them to continue to exercise for overall health, but allow the injured area to heal as optimally as possible. I have my patients limit certain exercises after I've discussed with them their specific exercise routine and style (traditional, cross fit, Olympic lifts, body weight, ballistic movements, etc). I don't want any exercises to cause more problems for my patients healing.

    Hi Dr. Vidan. I enjoyed your video. Actually it was a confirmation of what treatment my doctor prescribed for me. After xrays I was diagonosed with my thoracic veterbrate being out of line. My chiropractor aligned that with adjustments. My Physical Therapist diagnosed me with costocondritis.Fortunately I did not have alot of pain especially in the back area. The issue for me was the soreness and tenderness in the rib cage due to the inflammation. It has been almost two months, and I was still dealing with inflammation. My question is do I just continue with the cold packs? I have also been using a topical gel. Thank you.

    • @DrAlexVidanDC

      Good question @sandraedwards. Very glad to hear that you’ve received the care that you need thus far. I’d definitely recommend that you speak to your treating healthcare providers about best practices for you specifically. After being out of the acute phase of care 20min of ice with a towel between the skin and ice may be needed on occasion for some of my patients dealing with this, but it’s not often. If someone is continuing to have inflammation their is likely a structural reason that it has continued for the past two months. I’d suggest seeking care with your healthcare provider because you don’t want it to continue and get worse.

    Hi good video.... I have costo and I was seeing a chiropractor who said my rib keeps going out of place. But I’m afraid they have made it worse... I have hypermobility and I feel like they adjusted me too much in my front rib area. I never really got relief from them...I recently discovered it could be an issue with a rib/joint being locked up around the back that causes this. And you need to stretch out the Locke duo area in the back. What’s your opinion on that?

    • @DrAlexVidanDC
      @DrAlexVidanDC  4 года назад

      Good question @KtotheT. I can't speak for the Doctor of Chiropractic that you were seeing or their care. I know that in my office I evaluate and determine the course of care differently than most. We adjust and provide therapy to strengthen and stabilize. We also want to be sure to get proper motion and stretch the necessary areas. I find that often with ribs multiple aspects need to be addressed and corrected.

    • @katie1897
      @katie1897 4 года назад

      Dr Alex Vidan yes The one I saw was very nice and caring, and tried to help. But it didn’t. I think they may have strained my already hypermobile ribs in the front... but guess I can’t do much about it now. I’m using the backpod and trying to stretch. I notice the costo seems to flair up when I do much exercise.

    • @DrAlexVidanDC
      @DrAlexVidanDC  4 года назад +2

      @oasale it's tough to see anything related to costo on an xray, but I'm glad that they didn't find anything else. Sounds like you're doing the right things and doing the best you can for it. Sleeping can be difficult with costo pain. Once I've examined my patients we discuss specific sleeping positions so that they can sleep and heal. I typically find that back and then side sleeping is best for costo, but it's very specific to the person and pillow placement.

    • @DrAlexVidanDC
      @DrAlexVidanDC  3 года назад

      @A'badPris'ner I'm happy to help. When a rib has a malposition it can cause pain in the front and back, so that may be part of the issue for people with costo. Sinuses typically are not related to costo, but can be related to spinal misalignments. For patients with complaints similar to yours, I'd recommend finding a doctor of chiropractic that focuses on structure and functional correction then meeting with them to see if they can help.

I've been in the hospital two times when I first went it was on my right side! Now it have want to my left side where my heart is one minute it feel like it's getting better than next few hours I feel the pain all over again I actually can feel the swollen ness in my chest! • @DrAlexVidanDC
      @DrAlexVidanDC  3 года назад

      The good news is that you've been to the hospital to determine that it's nothing more serious like your heart. I'm glad to hear that for you. As for taking the pain pill I'd recommend following the prescribing doctors instructions and contacting them with any specific question about that. A lot of my patients find relief with specific adjustments to the involved ribs. It typically doesn't feel good while it's taking place but they get relief immediately after. Typically they get off the table and note that they can breathe much better and it no longer feels swollen or painful.

      @bernadettemchugh there’s a lot of variables that could cause the problem. A rib could be out in the back causing problems in the front. You could also get an anterior rib that would directly cause a subluxation of the rib at the costosternal joint.

    What can I say to my dr to push her to do tests and get the diagnosis of whether it’s my rib out of place or inflamed cartilage .

      Sorry to hear about you suffering for so long. I hear that same thing in my practice when patients start care with rib issues. The good news is that the hospital has likely checked to ensure that it’s not a heart issue that you’re having.
      I’d suggest finding a doctor near you that focuses on structure. Asking chiropractors near you if they have an emphasis on structural correction and if they know how to adjust ribs would be best.
      When a rib is out of alignment it must get back into alignment and correct the structural issue so that the body can heal.

      Very happy to hear that you'll be finding a chiropractor in your area to help you. Be sure that you see someone that has experience in adjusting and caring for rib issues. The good news for you is that you've had several doctors rule out a heart attack. While continued monitoring of your heart and BP is recommended, in situations like this heart palpitations and increased BP may be increased from pain in the area. Especially when it causes anxiety. Then the anxiety perpetuates the pain which then perpetuates the heart palpitations and elevated BP, which then perpetuates more anxiety... it can be a vicious cycle. Glad that you'll be ending the cycle and determining if a rib issue is the cause of all of this for you!

The key is finding someone who has experience helping people with the specific issue someone is having, not someone that dabbles in that issue.

If seeing that particular chiropractor didn't work for you or they didn't explain it well enough then you may want to discuss your concerns further with them. This can typically be done over a phone call. I'd at least give them a chance to explain what they're doing to help you and you express your concerns with them. After doing that you may be happy with their response and continue care with them or you may want to find another chiropractor to help you. At least give them a call though to discuss and then go from there.

It never seems to go away and has not really gotten better in the past 6 months. I had it after performing dips and I am afraid I will never be able to workout properly again. My doctor has told me to stay inactive and avoid physical activity, but I am not seeing any results and am not able to even run without feeling pain. Is there anything that I can do elsewhise? also, is it required to make these adjustments or "fixes" to put it in place (if that's the possible solution) in order to actually recover from it at any time? And should I be worried about getting it again, when I am hopefully recovered?

    • @DrAlexVidanDC
      @DrAlexVidanDC  4 года назад

      I hear this kind of thing in my practice all the time. Someone has been dealing with the problem for months or years and nothing seems to help. If there is a structural problem such as a rib out of position nothing will correct that other than fixing the structural problem. Specific adjustments from a well trained doctor of chiropractic should be able to fix that for you. Of course you need to find someone that knows what they’re doing with this. If a structure is out of place then the structure itself as well as the surrounding connective tissue can’t heal correctly and allow for proper exercise or movement. There is no amount of rest or inactivity that will get a malposition structure in the right place. Once it’s correctly and specifically return to the correct position then it may come back but at that point you can get it addressed more quickly and fixed faster because you’ll be educated on exactly what it is and exactly how to correct the issue. Having said that it does not mean that it will come back. The vast majority of my patients never have a rib subluxation again.

      @@DrAlexVidanDC Hi Dr Alex. I really appreciate your answer wholeheartedly, since nobody ever understood my issue. I had been weight lifting for a year and I was very serious about it. Now I can barely lie in my bed properly. I've been to several doctors already, and they have told me it is cartilage which has been ripped apart; they've told me to rest for a longer period of time. However, it does not seem to improve even after a year as I said, and your explanation makes a lot of sense in this regard. Should I perhaps consider contacting a physiotherapist then? In which case; is there anything I should tell him specifically?

    • @DrAlexVidanDC
      @DrAlexVidanDC  4 года назад

      I’m happy to help and understand what you’re going through as a lot of my patients shared a similar experience prior to getting care at my office. You can see a physio and they may be able to help you, but I would recommend finding a specifically trained doctor of chiropractic to help you with your problem since they focus on adjusting those specific areas. Prior to seeing them you can explain your complaints and ask if they have experience in correcting that issue or if they recommend someone else that does.

    Dr. Vidan, your video seems to be spot on regarding treatment of Costochondritis. I was recently diagnosed with this problem after suffering a year with rib/chest/back pain that started after a bad fall. I tried many treatments-acupuncture, Graston, deep tissue laser heat, physical therapy and Rolfing. Each modality worked by relieving the pain, however, the effects were only temporary and never long lasting. • @DrAlexVidanDC
      @DrAlexVidanDC  3 года назад

      Pain in the chest could be from multiple issues. It’s important to make sure that it’s nothing coming from your heart so I would suggest that you are evaluated by a physician near you. It could certainly be muscles or a rib that’s not positioned optimally causing your pain. Either way I would make sure that you rule out any major issues with someone that focuses on there like an MD and then determine if it’s a structural issue from someone that focuses there like a doctor of chiropractic. Three months is a long time to be dealing with that and you don’t want it to continue to get worse.Hopefully the information in the video helped give you some direction as well.

      The good news is that you've been to your medical doctor to determine that it's nothing more serious like your heart. I'm glad to hear that for you. A lot of my patients find relief with specific chiropractic adjustments to the involved ribs. It typically doesn't feel good while it's taking place but they get relief immediately after. Typically they get off the table and note that they can move and sleep much better and it no longer feels painful. You may want to look for a doctor of chiropractic that has experience in caring for people with this and see if they can help you.

      For my patients that’s typically what they state happens to them as well. Based on how nerves travel from the spine out to the rest of the body that makes sense. Also, considering how the rib head can rotate close to the spine and that angle continues the further away from the body you get, that makes sense there too. Have you heard of Steve August and how he treats costo? He's the founder of the backpod and he believes this, " Think of your ribs like bucket handles, hinged at the front onto your breastbone and at the back onto your spine. The ribs lift up and down with every breath you take, and also move as you twist and move around.
    Now, if the posterior rib joints (where the ribs hinge onto your spine) are frozen solid and not moving, then the more delicate joints where the ribs hinge onto your breastbone HAVE to work excessively, just to let you breathe. This is unequivocal.
    So they 'give', strain, get irritated, then get locally inflamed - and there’s your costochondritis. It is NOT a "mysterious inflammation" arriving out of a clear blue sky only at a few specific rib joints for no reason - of course it isn't." He believes the root cause of costo is a mechanical problem in your back. What are your thoughts on this? It's just strange to me because out of all the medical professionals that I've looked into online the majority of them all say the same, that the main way to treat costo is by lowering inflammation, but that'll only help the pain and not the root of the problem which is the frozen up and locked ribs.

      @betogarcia I'm glad that you had it checked out and found out that it wasn't a heart issue, cancer, or CV19. It can take quite a while to heal, but if it's truly a costochondritis caused by a rib subluxation (out of position) then you can expedite your healing process. I've had 4 patients with similar histories as yours in the past week. I found the cause of the problem and we're currently correcting it. 2 of them started noticing immediate relief. Terrible to hear that your uncle has been suffering for more than 2 months. In cases like this I don't recommend an operation for my patients. I recommend they see a doctor of chiropractic that has experience in helping this issue and allowing the body to heal in the proper place. If it's truly a structural issue of a rib out of position causing pain and dysfunction, then no medication will allow that rib to get back into position and function correctly. It will take a structural change by a well trained doctor of chiropractic to evaluate and determine the best course of care for the rib.

      Talk to a PT and/or a Doctor of Chiropractic. Ask them if they have specific training and understanding of your issue and ask how often they help people with this issue. The PT should know about certain stretches to do to help your specific issue and location. The Chiropractor should know the exact adjustment needed to move the rib correctly if that’s the problem. Its not so severe pain initially i had it only on left side so i ignored it but from past week there is light pain on right side also..... I went to see my doctor coz i thought that ut had something to do with my heart but he said it has nothing to do with heart and its costochondritis. But the pain is 3/10 and also it doesn't pain when i touch my ribs so is it really costochondritis ? I have priscribed neproxen 250mg twice a day. Is it related to heart? Dull pain mostly near shoulder and side of sternum near collar bone

    • @DrAlexVidanDC
      @DrAlexVidanDC  4 года назад +1

      @aditeekori the good news is that you're having it looked at early and your MD hasn't found anything related to your heart. You'd have to ask your prescribing doctor why he/she specifically prescribed neproxen. It's typically prescribed for inflammation and pain, but be sure to ask your prescribing doctor or the pharmacist. Costochodritis can cause pain to be involved in the shoulder, collar bone, sternum, down the arm, and other areas. I'd suggest consulting with a Doctor of Chiropractic that focuses on helping people with these issues so that they can perform a physical exam and determine a possible course of care for you. If it's warranted I'd also suggest trying some of the ideas I shared in the video.

      For most of us, between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm) is normal.1 The rate can be affected by factors like stress, anxiety, hormones, medication, and how physically active you are. An athlete or more active person may have a resting heart rate as low as 40 beats per minute.
      When it comes to resting heart rate, lower is better. It usually means your heart muscle is in better condition and doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain a steady beat. Studies have found that a higher resting heart rate is linked with lower physical fitness and higher blood pressure and body weight.2 Not always the case though.
      You’re going to need to find a Doctor of Chiropractic near you that has a lot of experience examining and caring for rib Subluxations. They can determine the best course of care to get you back to where you need to be.
      Truly hope this helps you @DisasterGaming

      @@DrAlexVidanDC yes sir I got echocardiogram test also done there's no problem with the heart now my doubt is with pleurisy because whenever the pain strikes it worsens with deep breath and I cannot relive the pain while lying down at all and my bp is also elevated 150/85 and my resting heart rate touched 110bpm the docter has prescribed a beta blocker which has worked now my heart rate is 60 bpm
      I'll do a chest x-ray and will see with a pulmonorologist and I don't even think that it's because of my rib as there is no tenderness at all and I took brufen for a week.
      Once again tysm as there are so less physicians out there who actually cares for patients health and not of money ❤️
      God bless you sir!
