  • How to use Sharpie Extra Fine Paint Markers. What's the difference between Sharpie Water-based Paint Markers, Poster Paint and Oil-based Paint Pens? And how can you tell them apart? I show you how to prime your new paint pen to avoid leaking. Sharpie Paint Markers work beautifully on Black Surfaces, Kraft Paper, Photos, Windows and even Rocks! Lots of swatch examples, so that you can see what the Pastel, Primary, Glitter and Metallic Pens look like on the paper.
    Hope the video helps sort out any confusion about these awesome paint pens. If there is some kind of Demo you would like to see in an upcoming video, please let me know in the comments. Thanks!

    +DigiCube0 I've used the water-based paint pens to draw on a rock and also a tin sign that would be sitting outside in the elements. After finishing the artwork, I waited a few hours and then sprayed a few very light coats of Clear Matte Acrylic Sealer. (mine was made by ModPodge). One light coat, let dry for 15 minutes, then spray a second light coat. Just a mist each time, so that it doesn't get runny. They have survived the elements for a few months already. You could also try the Oil-based paint pens. They would probably stand up to the elements even better, but I'm not sure whether oil based would have to be sealed, or with what type sealer to use.

    I won't buy Sharpie paint pens again. I bought them today to give them a try. It is because of your demo that I was able to get color. It is a lot of work to make a pen go. Many people will give up before the pen works and the store may see lots of exchanges/refunds. Thank you for your demos. There are so many different products that it is hard to know.

    I just worked with the ultra fine point today with the metal tip just like a regular sharpie in that size. and it is very important that you depress it the way they say to. I mean my finger tips are so calaysed from all the years of art I've done I didn't feel anything when I depressed it 3X in the upward position, shook it (capped) a bit, depressed it twice and was well on my way to rock painting! I would also suggest using a scrap piece of index card or card stock to start the ink flow so that way if too much flows out you can clean it up around where the nib meets the felt tip. I am happy that you found some brighter colors gives me hope to try and find them because I tend to like the extra small point. I have a heavy hand.

    I've been a professional athlete on a world level for over 40 years. People are bombarding me to sign T-Shirts and other materials that stretches when signing an autograph. So far, I not found one product that does not pull when using for this purpose. I've spent hours reading and watching videos. I am astounded that no ones mentions any marker that flows over cloth surfaces. The only thing I that come close is a steel rollerball paint marker. IMO, Sharpies are the worse!

      Lili Rochefort I would love to make a video about that! The item you see at the beginning of the video is a Derwent "sketchbook" in all black paper. It's perfect for doodling on in Gel Pens and Paint Pens. Are you asking me about the circle pattern in dots? It's in a dot style similar to Aboriginal Art, from Australia. You can google either *Dot Art* or *Aboriginal Art* to get some ideas for colors and patterns. Hope that helps, and thanks for nice comment! Mimi

      If it is going to be exposed to rain or sprinklers, I would spray a few very light coats of Clear Acrylic Sealant. I used Mod Podge Matte in a spray can. I think I got it at WalMart or Michaels. I used this on a garden rock and also an iPad cover with good results.

When I buy the poster-paint/water-based pens individually at an art store like Dick Blicks or Aaron Brothers, I usually pay about $3 each. Probably about the same price at craft stores, but they don't always carry the water-based version.

    Mimi, have you ever come across an ultra fine tip silver colored markers? I know Sharpie has one (oil based, metal tip) but the paint doesn't flow consistently and the more i press down on the tip to get the paint flowing, it starts to leak far too much paint that I find myself having to clean the tip with tissue. I basically need it to color in very tiny pieces of plastic, so feathering, leaking or bleeding are a big no no. As a matter of fact the sharpie extra fine tip is a tad big for what im trying to paint and the fact that it leaks makes it useless for what im trying to paint. ive tried the arts and crafts stores, hobby shops, office supply stores and even google searched but it seems the only thing out there in fine tip or smaller are the markers with the rattle ball inside that you have to press the tip down on.

      Have you tried a Sakura GellyRoll Metallic Gel Pens? Or another brand of gel pen might be just what you need. I'm working on a video right now, a viewer request (Lilli) for how I do the Dot and Doodle art that you see at the beginning of this Sharpie Paint video. The cover of that black sketchbook you see, is decorated mostly with Sakura MOONLIGHT GellyRoll Pens (and some Sharpie Paint Pens).
      I also like the UniBall Gel Impact in Silver and Gold. (You can pick them up at Staples or maybe even Target or WalMart). They flow nicely and the ink stands out. The tip is 1.0 mm, which I would say is more fine than the extra fine sharpie paint pen. But no gel pen I have tried is as smooth and bold as the Sakura GellyRoll Gel Pens in Moonlight and Metallic. The Sakura GellyRoll Souffle Pens are "dimensional" (bump up a little off the surface) But they are strange to work with, because they take 30 seconds or so to dry. It's a little like drawing in invisible ink. And I'm not sure if Souffle comes in any metallic colors. I've only seen Souffle in Pastel Colors. Are you drawing & writing? Or just doing dots?

    • @ThisNamesNowTaken
      @ThisNamesNowTaken 10 лет назад

      HeyMimi DIY Thanks for replying so quickly. To be more precise, i work on plastic model cars and from time to time the box/kit does not include the car emblem decals. Instructions suggest silver paint and as you can imagine, using the finest paint brush you can find. It's tricky holding a steady hand while painting the tiny Honda, Nissan, Chevy emblems that are molded onto the plastic. You have to draw just a tiny bit of paint on the tip of the brush and do short, gentle strokes just brushing the tip on the surface of the plastic. You have to work slowly doing a little at a time because you want to avoid collecting too much paint on your brush.
      Anyway, I thought I would cheat by using fine tipped markers or pens which would be quicker to work with and the ink flow would be more consistent. I stopped by a place called Swain's Art Supplies this evening and they actually did have the Sakura GellyRoll pens. I tested their pens out on their scratch paper and was actually having problems getting fine lines with this pen. I really love Sakura's Pigma Micron pens. Their .20mm or .25mm tips would have been ideal for what I'm trying to do but they don't offer in silver color. I'm on Uni-Ball's website. I don't remember seeing the Gel Impact at that store, but I'll search where I can buy it and give that one a try. I ended up purchasing a Pentel sunburst metallic gel pen, a Stabilo Point 88 and some Yasutomo gel xtreme gold, silver and white pens. The Yasutomo pens are .7mm which is still big for what i'm trying to do, but of all the pens I tried out this brand was the best at drawing very fine lines by gently brushing the tip over the paper. I'm still going to look for the Uni-ball you suggested. Thank you so much for your input.

      ThisNamesNowTaken
      Your'e welcome! I started to make a video for you, showing samples of my various brands of Silver Gel Pens, Silver paint pens, etc ... I thought Id pass along a few of my findings, because the video is taking awhile to edit. I tested promising stuff on plastic, on clear Avery Labels (so you might be able to work on the clear label an apply to the car, if you like it. I even tried a few pens & paint on my own polished nails, because I wanted to test them on a slick surface! A few unexpected contenders: Silver Craft Paint or Silver Nail Polish applied with a toothpick gave me surprisingly good results. It also works well applied with a sharp pencil! Just dab out a blob of the paint or nail polish, and dip the tip of the pencil (or toothpick) and write with it! You do have to dip often, but I felt like I had a lot more control over the line, than I could get with paintbrush.
      Also, the Fiskars Silver Gel Pen flowed nicely, and was a finer line than the Sakura Metallic Gen Pen. I got a set of 48 Fiskars Gel Pens on Amazon for $14. Some flow better than others, but the silver is great. I still love the silver water-based Sharpie Paint pen. You could seal it with a clear coat of nail polish, or clear medium. The gel pens actually did write directly on plastic, clear labels and my (polished nails). But they wiped away very easily from the plastic. However, they held up (when dry) on the clear inkjet labels! The (waterbased) Sharpie Paint Pen and Silver Acrylic Paint held up better (to a swipe with a wet paper towel) than the Gel Pens. But the silver nail polish held up to water, windex and isoprorpyl alcohol!
      Finally, another decent fine-line gel pen I tried in a silvery blue, was "The Write Guys Super Gel" which I think I bought from Target or Walmart. Surprisingly, some Uniball Signo 207 Gel Pens did not work at all, on any slick surface. Theywere gel pens, but I don't think they were metallic pens.
      I hope to post my video by tomorrow!

    • @ThisNamesNowTaken
      @ThisNamesNowTaken 10 лет назад

      HeyMimi DIY That is awesome. I look forward to the video. Just now I got done with trying to create my own pen. Last night i was picking some of my fine tipped pens to just use for normal writing around the house. When i opened one of the pens half the ink flew out. I thought the ink was sealed by something but it was actually just loose inside the pen. I drained it, cleaned, let it dry overnight, just now i got done opened the Sharpie and transfered the silver paint to the pen. It wouldn't write so I have it right now sitting upright. Maybe i have to let the fluid work its way to the tip, or maybe the silver paint will be too thick to get through? I'm going to search these pens you just mentioned and see if i can get a hold of them. By the way, i did try the toothpick technique. It worked but required a lot of dipping because the paint would absorb and was a bit tricky creating consistent thick/thin straight lines. Thanks again. I'll keep an eye out for the video.

      Marion Kros I wonder the same thing. I’ve sharpie enamel. And they don’t bake permanent. And the tips dry and stick. Not to great.

    I never press straight down, I press at an angle, sometimes the paint will just pour out.

    What craft store did you find your water based sharpies. I live in jacksonville nc but haven't been able to find anything but the oil based which I don't really like. I've tried michaels, ac moores, hobby lobby, staples, Office Depot, Walmart. With no luck!

      free2danz1960 I was at Michael's this weekend and they had a Sharpie Paint Pen display at the end of one aisle. I'm going to post a photo on Instagram, and then see if I can link to it in the comments here. You had to look very closely to realize that the water based pens were there, at the top of the display. I would not have even looked that hard, if I hadn't just read your comments about the difficulty finding the water-based pens. I'll post back in a bit!

      free2danz1960 I hope this helps: instagram.com/heymimidiy Take a look at the photo I just posted to instagram, it shows the Sharpie Display and how difficult it is to notice the water-based paint markers at the very top. I can see that they are trying, but Sharpie has to do better at differentiating these two products!

      yeah...kinda weird! I did find a pack of basic color, fine point, water-based markers. Finally! Found them at Hobby Lobby. They only had one pack of one set of colors. All the rest were oil-based. I like the pastel ultra fine point like you were using on the one video. I guess I'm going to just order online. Thanks!

    I made about 100 little pinhead sized dots on a painted wooden bowl and now the marker won't work. When I compressed the head to load it again a little flood (a spill the size of a pencil-end eraser)of paint came out but the pen still won't work. It couldn't possibly be empty could it? Any tips? Did yours run out super fast?

    • @Heymimi
      @Heymimi  10 лет назад

      Heidi Adkins I don't think it could run out with that little use. I've re-primed before, like you describe, and got the paint flowing again. Is it the water-based paint pen (with the blue band?) or oil-based? I've found the water based to flow more smoothly and reliably. My thought is to wipe the tip off with a baby wipe or warm wet lint-free rag, like an old t-shirt; and then treat it as if it were a brand new pen, and re-prime it. If the ink flows out with each "Depress" then try writing with it, even if nothing is coming out. (not just dots, at first, but write/draw, scribble). It might help the ink soak into the tip?

      @heidiadkins5618 10 лет назад

      Thanks so much-I'll give it a go! The other two paint pens I tried are fine point , not extra fine, and they seem to work much more reliably, as they have a more marker-like tip, rather than metal. thank you!

      Hi Lindsey. Do they make Deco Colour in Extra Fine Point? All of the other paint pen brands that I've tried have a thick "Poster" type tip that is just too wide for the projects I do.

      Hi Rachel. An Amazon search for Sharpie Poster Paint (without a defining band) pulls up water-based Sharpie Paint Markers. I must say, it's very confusing. Sharpie's website does a terrible job of addressing this question! It's not in their FAQs, or product descriptions, but they do show one product called a Bold Poster Paint Marker, which has no band, and is water based. It's bizzare that Sharpie seems to ignore that Poster Paint Markers are even one of their products! I see this question popping up everywhere; but Sharpie just does not explain it! Weird! However, in my tests between the various Sharpie Paint Markers, the poster paints seem to be identical to their Water based Paint pens. Here's a link to the Amazon search for Sharpie Poster Paint Link: www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=sharpie%20poster%20paint
