Hello, so I just bought a Asus vg24v and I have a pc that doesn't have a display port only HDMI, can I use it without a display port or what should I do?
Hi Eyguy! Be sure to get the right cable, usually around $20.00, because your are converting from hdmi to display port. If memory serves me, I think you'll need a cable with a small convertor box built into the cable. Did the monitor come with a manual? The manual should have a section on that stuff, or look for the manual online, search for "my-monitor-name.pdf."

Thank you so much, I managed to make it work and it's an amazing monitor, 100% worth the struggle to set up and money
@@eyguy7225 bro can you help me i am in the same situation. how you managed to make it work?
I agree with the hostage comment and see that that the wall texture may also be a factor for the angst and yes I do enjoy the explanation too. Thank you!
Ive looked all over internet and tried several things but I think what fixed it for me was “joggling and pushing the cable in enough.” Lol so simple. Thanks!
Cool! The holes on those cables are way too small!
Back in the 1990's I taught music for eight years in my own shop. I ending up setting up a midsize recording studio, lots of used gear (this was pre-ebay days, I bought used gear through magazines ads). I remember one time I could not get any sound out of the set up. I finally called a tech at a huge company, I don't remember which one (this was pre-RUclips days). I had him on the phone, he was walking me through stuff to check, telling things to check...he had me checking the electrical plugs first. I was about age 30, I still remember saying to him like it was yesterday, "What's this do!" He calmly said, "We're checking to make sure everything is plugged in good." I said, "oh..." FYI: I had two small mixing boards. Come to find out, a mixing board I set up and forgot about years previous, for some reason I had turned all the volumes down...thirty years later, I'm still telling that story.
@@JimVincitore That's hilarious. Oh the things we learn by doing. I have many stories like that myself. Thanks again.
@@JimVincitore can you use a Hdmi to Hdmi cable or only a Hdmi to Display port cable would work?
@@sylvainh2o Whatever plugs are on your monitor and pc...that's what you use. If both have dp, use dp. Try it and sees if it works...I don't think you can fry anything. If both have hdmi, use hdmi. If one has dp and one has hdmi, find a cable on ebay or amazon (about $10.00 or so) that has a dp on one end and an hdmi on the other. I think...going from lower quality hdmi pc to higher quality dp monitor, you might need a convertor cable. A convertor cable has a dp on one end and an hdmi on the other, and also has a little black box (maybe one inch by two inch box) on the cable to do the conversion from hdmi to dp.
Wow! That was my issue. The display port cable was not plugged completely in. Thank you kindly Mr. Vincitore.

Hi Sullee!
The Blue plug I think you are describing is the old fashioned "D PLUG." I think it is also called "vga plug, vga port." Port is just a fancy word for plug. Those still work great and are very reliable. I think you are saying the D Plug cable is permanently connected to your monitor, that is common. On the computer side, your older PC might already have a D plug connection port built in, all older pc's do. I still use D plugs whenever possible, they are fast and easy and always work. If not, you can get a convertor cable to connect the D plug to an hdmi or display port on the pc. Or you could install a pci card in your computer to connect the D plug cable. I'd look for a convertor cable first and see if that works, before installing a pci card. Good enough PCI cards are about $20.00, but some are real expensive, hundreds.

Thank you so much Sir, I have a hard time to get HDMI into the Port, with your clip I know the different, that why I can't put the cable in. Thank you so much.
I would not recommend wiggling the cable when it is plugged in as you will eventually pull trace pads from the PCB. if you are having issues with the cable, simply dip the HDMI cable end into some IPS, (or Isopropyl ) and use an old tooth brush and scrub the cable end, as well as the female socket on your PC, monitor or TV etc. it won't short anything as it is a dielectric. Wiggling the cable like in this video can break the pin connections (traces) and you will then have a bigger problem. Cheers! and Good Luck!
GREAT INFO. HAVE EVER ACTUALLY SEEN ONE BREAK OFF? OR IS IT RUMOR?
@@JimVincitore Not a rumour, check out a RUclips channel called TheCod3r, he has repaired dozens of HDMI ports. mostly on gaming consoles, but the principal is the same. I also had this happen to a video card, one was a HDMI and the other was a Display Port.

Thanks for the review. I just bought a Dell (2022) and connected with the HDMI cord (both ends are HDMI) to my HP EliteDesk 800 GI SFF computer I bought refurbished and I would say it's about 8 years old. Have you seen this message flash on your screen?: Not connected to HDMI. Should I be worried about this message? It comes on every time I turn on my computer. I'm thinking it isn't a problem or the guy at the computer store wouldn't have sold me DisplayPort to HDMI converter cable. Thoughts or suggestions?

Hi Ty! You're welcome! Jim
The proscan flatscreen, is that a TV? If yes, on the TV monitor, use the remote that came with the TV to select the input. Like, if you plugged the pc into "hdmi 1" on the back of the TV, on the TV you must select "hdmi 1" as the input. Use the remote to turn on the TV, and quickly press the ENTER key on the keyboard to wake up the pc. Here, eventhough you are using the TV as a monitor, you must still select the input. I deal with that daily...I am using Amazon Fire TV as monitor. They work great as monitors, but a real pain to wake up everytime the pc goes to sleep.

Can you use this cable the other way around? As in HDMI to laptop and DisplayPort to monitor?
Hi Justin! Great question! Usually yes. But some of the new cables are one way only. Try it and see if it will work. You can't hurt nothing. Amazon Basic cables seem ok, these days I get most of my cables at Home Depot, great quality, good price...and I know some person didn't just make the cable in their basement. But if you find the right person, they might be making high quality cables. Jim
Does this work with a Nintendo switch to?
I just need to know how to switch from pc to HDMI mode from the task bar display thing but I can't find the button
I'm pretty sure it's all automatic, just plug in an hdmi cable and the video and sound goes through the hdmi cable to the monitor. USB works the same, plug in a usb device into your computer, printer, camera, etc...and the operating system knows how to route the signal. I struggled with the concept too...it's all magic behind the scenes.
Can i do it in opposite way like DP to monitor and HDMI to my computer?
Yes, for sure! But some newer cables are only one way. Try it and see if it works, can't hurt nothing. Most laptops are hdmi output to an external dp monitor.
Thatnk you sooo much i thought my computer was dead
DID YOU GET IT WORKING?
That was a week ago when it wasnt working that video fixed it
But that video is not working anymore
Here is a question, i used to be able to hook up a regular desktop computer to my tv, where i can have the computer monitor working and my tv would be a second screen. my all in one computer does not have hdmi in it, just a display port, would i be able to use my computer and my tv both together with 2 screens. another words, i want to still have my computer screen on seeing things and my tv to have a second screen to do other work on it at the same time
Thank you…
YOU'RE WELCOME ABDUL!
Do I put the Dp port into the gpu and then the hdmi side into the monitor?
Depends on what your computer has. If both monitor and computer box both have DP, then use DP on both. DP on both ends is best quality. If your monitor has a hdmi plug, then you'll need a cable that converts DP to hdmi. HDMI is high quality, but DP is better.

Yes. One cord, hdi one end, dp on other end. Some have a small black box on the cable to help converting hdmi to dp. Try a straight cable, if that don't work, get the one with the black box.

Either way should work. I don't think you can short it out by trying it. If you need a cable, most cables go both way, but some newer cables I have heard are one way only-- pc to monitor. Your question is not clear. You can get cables where both ends are dp's. You can also get cables where one end is hdmi and the other is dp. Look up the manuals for your specific pc and monitor, they might be on the web on the company's web site. Also, after you get it plugged in, if it won't show a screen on the monitor, it might be Windows...I had heard Windows does not like dp's...but I hope Microsoft got that fixed by now. Feel free to write back for more help, and to let us know how you got it working.
What if you did it the other way around? I have a desktop that don't have a displayport, so I would then use a cable like that but with the hdmi from the PC and the Displayport into the monitor, do you know if that would work?
I think it will, but you might need a converter cable. converts from hdmi to display port.
I just had mine, I ordered the same thing and never knew anything about input/output. It didn't work because the HDMI should be plugged in the monitor and the displayport in the laptop. Sad to say, my monitor is old and doesn't have hdmi at the same time, my laptop is newer and doesn't have displayport, only hdmi. I find it hard to look for an adapter for both ends from where I live. I think I have to buy a newer monitor, I guess. Huhu...
What did you do btw? Thanks
I have a display port to display port cable my pc has a display port slot and so does my monitor but there is no signs when I plug it in, how can I fix this?
Hi Calvin! I'm not sure of your question. Check your computer and monitor manuals first, that's always the best place to start. You can probably find them online too. Turn both computer and monitor off. Unplug the current monitor video cables, such as vga or hdmi cables. Double check that both computer and monitor have display ports, they look real similar to hdmi plugs. Plug in the display port cable into both computer and monitor, don't force the plug in, push in lightly. Then turn computer and monitor back on, and hope everything works, called plug and play, or plug and prey! Display port carries both video and audio, so you might not need the audio cable if you have one plugged into your monitor. Feel free to write back. Jim
Hi I have a dell monitor with a an HDMI port but I cannot see the HDMI input source. The only choices are VGU and DP. I would like to use my monitor for console gaming.
Maybe try updating the driver in Windows. Go to the monitor website to get the newest driver for the monitor. I used to use generic drivers built into Windows, those worked good for me a few times.
Do it work with a 27hz
Man I’m dumb. Thanks for telling to push it all the way in.
Not inserting stuff the whole way always causes electronics to fail prematurely, goes for ram, pci-e cards etc. It's a common problem.

Hi Voyager! Might work with a regular cable, give it a try. Better to be sure to get the right cable, usually around $20.00. Some newer cables are one way only, older cables send signals both way. Both hdmi and dp are great quality, but because you're going from lower quality hdmi on your pc (xbox) to higher quality dp monitor, you might need a cable with a convertor box built into the cable. Also, hdmi and dp have version numbers, that might mess things up too. I also read that Windows 10 does not always work well with dp, it's hit and miss. Did the monitor come with a manual? The manual should have a section on that stuff, or look for the manual online, search for "my-monitor-name.pdf."

You can buy a DisplayPort to HDMI cable. Just make sure that you buy a cable that supports the resolution of your TV. Most cables usually support up to 1080p. But if your TV supports higher than 1080P and you want that higher resolution, the cable will need to support it as well. All this info should be listed in the product specifications.

Might need a cable with a small convertor built in, around $20.00. I'd try a simple cable foist and see if it works.
do u connect GPU and monitor or motherboard and monitor ?
Hi MK! Connect the computer box to your monitor, using a cord. On the back of the computer box, there is a plug to plug your monitor into. For monitors, there are many types of plugs, your pc might have one or two different types. The old blue VGA D-plugs still work fine for most of us. Newer DVI Digital video plugs, even newer HDMI plugs, and the newest is the display port. This plug, which ever one is on your pc, can be built onto the motherboard, or on a separate graphics card which is installed inside the computer in a PCI-E slot. There are different types of slots inside the pc box, but I think the PCI-E is still the most common. I'm no genius at the stuff, but by glancing at the web, the GPU is the graphics chip, which can be on a graphics cards, or built on the motherboard from the factory. If you buy a new graphics card at the store and install it into your computer box, it automatically disables the monitor plug on the motherboard. Lastly, if your motherboard monitor plug goes bad, you can just install a card to run your monitor. Even a cheap card will do for most of us. Gamers and those with expensive monitors like more expensive graphics cards too.
Can you hook up your pc to your monitor by plugging the hdmi end to your computer and the displayport to the monitor (that HAS a displayport port) ? Thank you.
Yes, but you might need a convertor cable. Try it and see if it works with a regular cable first.

do all dp cables come like that?
Yes, kinda. Some have a convertor, used for if going hdmi to dp. And I think I saw some cables online that only go one way, data can only go one way.
So can you use any hdmi cord without a vga cable? Or does it have to be like a pc hdmi cord? Jw I tried a regular spare hdmi cord I had for my tv and nothing pops up. When I plug in my vga than my display pops up.
Great question. If you use an hdmi, you do not need the vga...I'm pretty sure. I don't use the vga, it works fine. There are a few versions of hdmi, v1, v2, v3, etc. And some cables the data only flow one way. Your guess is as good as mine, I'm not a hardware tech. But ya know, now that you mention it, I have a sff pc that I can not get a signal from, it might just be the cheap hdmi cable. Cheap hdmi's off the web you never know what you are getting. Home Depot used to sell Belkin cables.
A few articles on the web talk about Windows 10 does not always working nice with display ports. And it could just be a driver problem.
I did a quick search on the web, it looks like Linux has problems with dp's too. Maybe the updated OS'es work better.
what the deal with new graphics card adding on display ports instead of hdmi? i do not understand that. i just bought a amd radeon 6600 gtx that i thought it said it had four ports on it. when i got it and installed it i noticed it only had one hdmi port and the rest display ports. what gives? kind of lame i think.
Dp's are the newest plug, everything is changing to dp's. I read the dp wiki, they have been around 10+ years, but just catching on the last few years. I think they are kinda buggy, lots of people have problems with them.
i have a dumb question does it matter where you put the adapter end in the pc or in the monitor ? for example i have a displayport on my monitor but i have HDMI on my graphics card does it work if i out the converter in the monitors end or do i should i only put it in the graphics card end ? sorry it's a bit confusing cause i was told by a tech guy believe or not that i have to only use it on the graphics end not the monitor.
New technology is always a pain. When Windows 10 came out, a lot of old printers and scanners would not work, even with new drivers. From what I've read online, for a monitor with a display port, the computer also needs a display port. I'd get a new video card, there are video cards with display ports, $50.00 on up on Amazon. For your set up, there might be an adapter sold online, but you might lose quality going HDMI to Display Port(there are different versions of HDMI, 1, 2, 3).
Display Port Wiki
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort
The wiki said Display port was created to be backward compatible with HDMI.
Hi,
My monitor has a DisplayPort but my PC doesn’t have one. Can a HDMI to DisplayPort work with 144hz?
Hi Sway! I'm no expert on the topic. I did look it up on the web, and found comments that said "driving a DisplayPort monitor from a DVI or HDMI video card output, doesn't appear to be supported." That being said, there are different versions of HDMI, one of the newer versions might work. If I were you, I'd get a video card with a display port output plug to take full advantage of your monitors quality. Especially if you want to game at 144hz, I think you need display ports on both ends. Check out the comments below. An adapter might work, but you'll lose quality because the hdmi is not a good as the display port. I've been messing with computers since 1995, new technology is always a pain when it first comes out. Let us know your results. Jim
From the web: HDMI devices are manufactured to adhere to various versions of the specification, in which each version is given a number or letter, such as 1.0, 1.2, or 1.4b. Each subsequent version of the specification uses the same kind of cable but increases the bandwidth or capabilities of what can be transmitted over the cable.

@@rooster4098 Well I wish I knew that before I got a DP to HDMI adapter, But can I do it with a VGA To HDMI Adapter?
So I just finished building a pc and I don’t have a vga or dvi cord, so do I have to have it or should I download my windows for it to work or is there another solution
You only need one monitor cord. The plug on the back of your computer will determine what type of cord you need. VGA (blue plug shaped like a D) is the old kind, but still used a lot. DVI is a newer type of monitor plug, better quality, and there are a couple types of DVI plugs. Hdmi is another new type of plug. And now the DISPLAY PORT has come out, best quality.
Then you gotta match the plug on your monitor too. Usually the computer and the monitor have the same type of plug. But, if your computer is one type of plug, and your monitor is a different type of plug, you can get an adapter cables.
You can also add a "pci-e card" video card to your computer. Let's say your computer has a D plug, and your monitor has a DP. Buy a DP "pci-e card" video card to add to your computer.
so If I use this for a second monitor would it make both monitors 30hz? probably a dumb question but wanted to make sure
I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THAT STUFF. BUT I'M GUESSING EACH MONITOR IS INDEPENDENTLY CONFIGURED IN THE COMPUTERS OPERATING SYSTEM. NUMBER ONE WOULD NOT EFFECT THE NUMBER TWO.
thank tou
Both of them are the same thing what do I do?
get a cable that matches, dp on both ends or hdmi's. dp on both is the best of the best for video and sound quality. Basic cables are around $10.00.

@@iNsatiab1e I agree! I have a small form factor pc I got on Amazon for $100 a few years ago. Worked for a year, now nothing...no errors, no beep codes, nothing. I don't know where to start with it, I think I'm just gonna trash it...not worth the aggravation.
hey guys, have you tried using a dp monitor on a gaming console that has hdm (ex. ps4) I have an hdmi to dp adapter but it doesnt work.
Some cables can go both ways, but the ones with adapter boxes usually only go one way. Like ps4 >>> dp monitor. Be sure you got the right cable with adapter.
hello . i have an hp laptop and it has a display port. I try to connect laptop to a TV via a dp to hdmi cable. but i can not get the display from TV . no signal occurs. What is the problem ? do i need driver for this in my lp. can you help at this point?
Hi Furkan!
FIRST. On the TV INPUT, make sure it is "from pc." There is an INPUT BUTTON THE THE TV REMOTE. Push the input button on the remote, you should get a list of different inputs. Here, TV input can be, hdmi 1, hdmi 2, hdmi 3, composite cables from a vcr, dvd player, etc etc.
Second. Video from a laptop to tv should work easily. I think on laptops, the external out dp works without any additional configuration inside Windows.
Third. Cheap cables rarely work these days. Be sure to get the right cable, usually around $20.00, because your are converting from display port to hdmi. Some cable are one way only. Also, dp and hdmi have version numbers, check the version of the cable. Not like the old days anymore when any ol' cable will work... try to find a cable with a small convertor box built into the cable. Did the TV come with a manual? The manual should have a section on that stuff, or look for the manual online, search for "my-monitor-name.pdf."
I think you might need something like this.
DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter
www.amazon.com/DisplayPort-Adapter-Uni-Directional-Converter-Support/dp/B0B2933L7T/
【DP 1.4a to HDMI 2.1 Adapter】 This DP 1.4a to HDMI 2.1 converter (Male to Female) only one-way from Displayport on Desktop/Laptop/Graphics Card to an HDTV/monitor/projector with HDMI for audio and video streaming or gaming. Note: An additional HDMI cable (sold separately) is required.
I think on laptops, the external out dp works without any additional configuration inside Windows. But check the settings in Windows. Right click on desktop > choose Display Settings. At the botton, click the DETECT BUTTON. Also, at the bottom of the Display Settings pop up, at the botton, click ADVANCED SETTINGS. aT THE TOP IN CHOOSE DISPLAY, SEE IF THE tv SHOWS UP IN THE DROP DOWN.
Lifes too short...Just buy a tv with a DisplayPort.
Feel free to write back and let us know how you got it working! Jim
Try this too. Make sure you press the enter key many times on the laptop when you select input on the tv remote. If you don't hit it just right, it won't recognize it. You got to keep the pc awake to connect to tv. I deal with that 50 times per day...I use Amazon TV's as monitors and they constantly go black on me.
I do not understand. why ı have to press enter key in my laptop whilemaking conf. on tv?@@JimVincitore
@@JimVincitore Thanks a lot Jim. but i did what you said. and the result is negative.
So my issue is my computer has an HDMI port and my monitor has a display port. So far the monitor is not showing anything and keeps going into power saving mode.
A convertor cable might work. There is a link in the description box. Read through some of the comments below, there are many link to different types of cable. Be sure to install the drivers on the cd that came with the monitor...hook up an old monitor to see the cd. I just thought of something...Try starting the pc in SAFE MODE, start the computer, then hold down the F8 key (I think it's F8 function key (top row of your keyboard), and your pc might be different)...see if you get a screen. Safe mode usually takes a minute or two to boot up.
How to Start Windows 10 in Safe Mode - Quick Guide
Press and hold Shift key and click Start > Power > Restart.
Click Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart after you enter into Win-RE.
Press F4, F5, or F6 key to boot into Safe Mode in Windows 10.
Can I use hdmi & vga Both?
To same monitor, I don't know. Two different monitors , yes for a dual monitor set up.
Idk I don’t see the hdm1 cable spot
Some computers might not have the hdmi plug, MIGHT BE A VGA OR DVI PLUG. And If you only have one hdmi, it won't be numbered. No 1 after hdmi. GOOD CATCH JULIO!
turns out my display port wasnt all the way in, thanks 🙏
Cool. Yep, they should all have a snap in plug.
Hi on my gpu i have 3 display ports and my monitor comes with one display port...can i connect it with only display cable not other cables? And my monitor is 165hz?should i be able to have 165hz with that cable?
Hi Aleksa! Yes, one plug, one cable. Plug one display port cable into your computer and the other end into your monitor. I don't think it matters which dp your use on your computer, but if they are numbered, use number 1. A computer has three dp plugs to plug in multiple monitors. And it's nice to have multiple video outs in case one goes bad after a few years. Maybe one dp plug for a soundbar, I guessing that would work.
@@JimVincitore do I connect a display port in the graphics card or sound card since my sound card does not support the display port?
Good question. Graphics card I'd say. Sound cards are usually for high quality sound output.
Quick question does this still run as if its a dp Plug all together or does it stop free sync or run as a hdmi?
Great question! I don't know anything about free sync. But I bet it's downgraded and only running as hdmi quality. Probably need display plugs on both ends to be display port quality.
I found this on the web.
Freesync HDMI vs Display port
forums.tomshardware.com/threads/freesync-hdmi-vs-display-port.2873478/
Are there any difference between HDMI and Display port on freesync?
Depends entirely on the monitor.
Some monitors support Freesync through HDMI and some through Display port.
A monitor that supports Freesync through HDMI won't support it through Display port, same for the opposite.
Jim Vincitore k chrz
Jim Vincitore thanks for the help
What is the other plug called
dp display port, hdmi, dvi digital video interface, and vga d plug. those are the video plugs names. most new stuff is display port and hdmi. i don't don't know about apples desktops, phones are all going to "usb C-plug," it's a small round plug.

I think it's just a new invention computers are changing too. Better quality connection.
How many hz can you get out of the cord
Max 60hz because of Hdmi
hello, so i have got an Asus Tuf F15 gaming laptop the 17inch one and i have just got an alienware AW2721D monitor thats refresh rate is 240hz whilst my laptop screen is 144hz and to get the full capacity of 240hz you need to use a display port and my computor only has hdmi so i bought a dp to hdmi cord and connected it and made sure it was tight not wiggling like you said in the video and it just wouldnt work and then ui used a normal hdmi on both ends and it worked but only gave me the 120hz so i was wondering if you could let me know what cord i need to buy inorder to get 240hz and very minimal latency like really low. This would be heavily appreciated. Sorry for the longmessage hope it makes sense

Hi Aiden! I'm no genius when it comes to the hertz stuff. I never studied it. First, See if you can find the hertz version on your hdmi cables and plugs, yes there is a version number. Then get a good quality cable, $20.00 or so. These days Home Depot is my first place for cables, quality cables, great price. Get the correct version number of hdmi too. I'm not sure if cheap cables will do the high power hertz you are talking about. In the old days, any old cable did the job, these days -- that's not always true. Second, right click on desktop, scroll down to "display settings." On the pop up, at the bottom, click "advanced settings." At the bottom of advanced pop up, there is a place to change the hertz, see if 240 shows up in the drop down. Third, if the monitor came with a cd, install the software (driver for the monitor) on the cd into your laptop...usually a "painless install," just a couple clicks and it does what's supposed to. Then try the display setting again. If no cd, download the driver from the monitor companies website...that will be the most current version too.
I found the below webpage.
HDMI 240HZ Monitor Compatibility: A Complete Guide To Making It Work
www.onecomputerguy.com/hdmi-240hz
Can You Run 240Hz on HDMI?
Yes; you can use your 240 Hz refresh rate monitor using specific HDMI cables, for instance, HDMI 2.1, HDMI 2.0a, and HDMI 2.0. These cables are compatible with 1080p and 1440p but on an 8-bit monitor.
Let us know how you get it working! And I'll look into getting you dp port to work! GREAT QUESTION! TOUGH STUFF!
@@JimVincitore thankyou so much will do but do i buy a dp to hdmi cable or try and get a good quality hdmi cable as my monitor doesnt link with hdmi 2.1
At this point I'm wondering; if the adapter says 4K, and I don't need that signal, is it going to show a picture?
Hi KM! I don't really know much about 4k, I studied it a little a couple years ago. I guessing, but your adapter will probably do 4k, and anything less than 4k. Like HDMI does 4k, but I only use them for 1080.
If I have Xbox series s connect to a alien ware monitor with 240 hz with that cable will I run 240 ?
I don't know. That's over my head! And I never used an XBox or alien, they are real cool though. But my best guess. I think DP is supposed to be the best cable out there, so it should able to handle 240.
There is a pink and green chart about half way down the page, that might help you answer your questions.
