  • The Sugar Express, operated by the U.S. Sugar Railroad, ran from Clewiston, FL, to Lake Placid, FL, and return on Saturday, May 18th, 2024. The line, originally built by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in the 1920s, today is owned and operated by U.S. Sugar, and is the only railroad in the United States solely dedicated to a Sugar Mill/Company. USSC 148 was built for the Florida East Coast Railroad as their No. 148, and then was sold to U.S. Sugar when the FEC began to dieselize. Eventually 148 would be sold and moved to numerous tourist railroads and parks, before ending up rusting away in a city park in Buena Vista, CO. She was purchased again by U.S. Sugar and placed into service hauling passenger as a goodwill ambassador for the company. In this video, we ride aboard the Baggage Car, utilized as an open air commissary, from Lake Placid, FL, to just North of Clewiston, FL. The scenery will change from orange groves to pine scrub, and then to the endless grass flatlands of the Everglades and Sugar country skirting Lake Okeechobee.
