This is how you remove Stripped or Broken 3.0T Supercharger Bleed Screws

  • We are in the process of getting things ready to swap out our V1 MercRacing Heat Exchanger for our V3 4.0T MercRacing Heat Exchanger, and part of that process was to swap out our OEM Plastic Bleed Screws on our supercharger with 034 Metal Bleed Screws.
Both of my bleed screws were stripped, and one was seized which resulted in the head breaking off of it leaving the plastic screw stuck inside of the bleed port.
In this video I show you how to remove a stripped screw, and one that has been broken off in the bleed port without using specialty tools. All you need are some regular metal screwdrivers that are small enough to fit into the bleed port, and something that can heat them up sufficiently.
Just be very careful not to hit ANYTHING other than the bleed screws you are trying to remove. And, if you are going to do this, I highly suggest you replace them with the 034 Motorsports Bleed Screws which can be found at the link below.

This was a very welcome video. Great advice because my bleeder screws were absolutely NOT moving with normal pressure. When I tried to use screwdrivers, they just stripped the bleeder screws to uselessness almost immediately. Your tips with the screwdrivers allowed me to get them out and exchange them for the 034 ones.

Thank you SO MUCH!!! A few months ago, I did my water pump and thermostat and reused the plugs. Learn the hard way, I guess. I recently replaced the lower radiator hose and when I went to refill, I snapped the top off of that POS plastic bolt. Anyway, after freaking out, I saw this video and it worked like a charm. I did use PB blaster when I tried the first time and just ripped the plastic apart. So I waited overnight, and tried again and it worked like a charm. (highly recommend PB Blaster and time) It still was crumbling, but it's almost all the way out now. I need the car running now, so I bought the Audi ones, but will be getting the stainless ones. They didn't even stock them... apparently the techs just pull a vacuum and never need to use them. The comments below about wrecking the supercharger scared the heck out of me. But I pulled success from the jaws of failure... with a little (lot) of help from your video. Thanks a million.
Any chance you'll be posting a radiator replacement? No video's out there on a Q5 3.0T radiator replacement.

If you want to make your own bleeder bolts and pay 2 bucks instead of 45 they are m8x1.0 16mm bolts. You just need to cut a bleeding slot in them with a dremel

@@AudiC7Owners Working great. Mine are so stuck I'm having to melt my way all the way through. I had to use a flat blade and grind it to fit all the way into the sockets. It quickly lost it's temper, and quenching/reheating was tedious, so I started melting with one driver and extracting with another.

I just did this today replacing the screws with the O34 ones and this was recommended. Google sees all. Not knowing this I used a drill and drilled it out until there was little material and using a pick get the rest. Because of how a drill bit works all material was brought up and thrown out. With the screw off I turned the car on and off in seconds to blow any plastic if it got in, out. Thankfully the coolant was cool, would have burned my arm if it was warm. At least I know my pump mod works... Also a extractor kit didn't work because the plastic is too soft.

Just a tip from a trusty mechanic, should have used a #3 phillips in the very beginning before you rounded off the screw heads. I work in aviation and done plenty of drilling stripped out screws and there are multiple different types of screws out there that can be taken off with wrong screwdriver tips. Kuddos for the trick though heating up a screwdriver to get more bite out of plastic screw that should have been metal from the get go.

Just changed my OEM bleeding screws. Everything went just like the video :). One went smooth one snapped the top end and left the other half in. I heated the screw driver, i used a flat head and rammed it well about quarter inch. let it cool off and sprayed a bit more wd 40, after that start spinning out like a princess. Placed the 034 Motor Sport bleeding screws and in the process bled the supercharger.

very helpful video. one tip i would say is keep the screw driver in there after it melts, the plastic creates a bond to the screwdriver once it all cools down. i had to use a plier to remove it after i took it out.

you are right. I also did this. Let the screwdriver cool down in the screw. It created a firm bond and afterwards is was hard to remove the screw from the screwdriver after i got it out :)

The head of my drivers side intercooler snapped off too. I drilled out as much plastic as I could…. A few little pieces fell into my intercooler. Luckily I’m porting my supercharger with Jokerz and replacing my intercooler this week. I ended cutting down my new supercharger screw halfway because it wouldn’t go further due to plastic still being in the hole.

You left the rubber gaskets from old screws in and doubled them up with the gaskets from the new screws. I took the old gaskets out, but now not sure if they were supposed to stay in there, meaning they are part of the supercharger not the screw. I get no leaks. I kept the old gaskets just in case.
