      Doctor Mike Maybe it is a new thing that you have discovered, but since the beginning of Islam, Ramadan is based on fasting between 14 and 16 hours depending on the season in 1 month. It has been this way for 14 centuries now, no severe side effects have been noticed except for headache maybe. I am saying that that is the best period to do the I.F.

    Surprisingly intermittent fasting helped me immensely heal my relationship with food after several eating disorders. I originally didn’t have the right intentions if I’m honest… but it genuinely changed the way I viewed food and instead I realized it was fuel and I cared more about the quality of what I actually ate. Intermittent fasting has so many benefits too.

      That's what it's done for me, too. I haven't been diagnosed with an ED, but I had some disordered eating patterns for sure. This way of eating has caused me to be more mindful of my actual needs and triggers. I've learned that I'm a stress eater, for example, so now I'm able to target stress reduction as a goal. That, and I lost weight that did need to come off.

    One of the benefits I have noticed when I started intermittent fasting (finishing to eat dinner at 6 max) was my quality of sleep. I have always had insomnia and difficulties to fall asleep but eating earlier means that I'm pretty much done digesting when I go to bed and that has helped me fall asleep and stay alseep for a full night. I picked up this way of eating to match my schedule at work and it works wonders.

    2 years and almost 80lbs gone... It's literally the only thing that's ever worked for me. I'm within 10lb of being in the "healthy" bmi range for the first time in my life. I started with alternate day fasting for about 7-8 months then went to IF(I usually just eat during the last few hours of the day.) I hardly ever get hungry before dinner time anymore. I don't even follow it every day now, but I'm still slowly losing weight. I might be crazy but it really feels like it changed my metabolism or something. I also have ALWAYS had an unhealthy relationship with food but I feel no emotional attachment to food anymore. I can't really remember when that happened exactly but thank God it did! Now I view food more like fuel or medicine. It's weird... but I love it lol. I hardly get "cravings" anymore but when I do, I indulge. I don't feel like I'm denying myself of anything and I think that's the reason it's sustainable. It's easy to get back on that horse if you know what I mean lol. I also think only being able to eat for so many hours a day made me start to think harder about the food I was putting in my body. I tend to WANT healthier foods now. Whereas before, I'd stress over how to "eat healthy." I don't know... I'm not a doctor lol but as someone who's struggled my whole life with weight, fasting has turned my world upside down😊

    • @Bahamaria
      @Bahamaria 5 лет назад +77

      For the people asking, here is what I do (IF for a month, no weight loss but one clothing size down and muscle gain already).
      I almost never drink alcohol or sodas, and I eat veggies as well as protein everyday (eggs, chicken, beef or vegan steaks). I already did that before IF.
      I eat during a 7 hours window (more convenient for me), only two meals (one around 12:30am - 1pm and the other before 7:30 - 8pm). These meals consist of absolutely anything I want that day. Usually that includes healthy stuff like raw vegetables (I hate cooking, I eat them raw because it's simpler) and nuts, but it can be accompanied with any type of food I want. IF is supposed to be guilt-free - the point is that your appetite is gonna regulate itself, you're gonna listen to your needs more. Often I don't have time to cook and I just go for a kebab or a McDonald's, or I eat out in restaurants which are healthier but still calorie-rich.
      When I began, I would also snack between my two meals. I think it's fine. Again, appetite regulates itself after a while. It's mostly a psychological endeavor at first, you need to learn that you can go for hours, days even, without food, and you're gonna feel physically fine.
      I'd advise you to try things out and find what works for you. What are your favourite, filling foods? Put them on your lunch menu. Take a few weeks to get used to that new eating schedule; you'll worry about what to eat later. Don't change too many things at once. When you're used to eating only during a short time window, and once you've figured out when to put that window according to your preferences and schedules, you can try to change a few things: cut out quick sugar fixes (sweets, alcohol, sodas, etc), and include foods that are good for you like nuts, vegetables, healthy protein, seeds. The rest depends on your tastes and gut habits.
      The most important thing about any diet is to stick to it. That happens ONLY if it makes you happier and not miserable and hungry. So consider that the only rule to follow is the short eating window, and organize things within this rule according to what sounds good or exciting to you. You can adjust the details as you go.

      He is actually also not fair for most of the female population if you consider how it misleads young womens' brains into hoping they can land a young man like this for themselves and will go on rejecting perfectly suitable partners for years in search of this "perfect" man, and in doing so, not only break the hearts of a few men, but screw themselves over completely by wasting valuable time fantasing about something they will ultimately (most likely) never have. And they may even miss out on their chance to settle down and reproduce if they allow this fantasy to continue into their late 30s. So Dr Mike, do you have any advice for all the men and women out there who enjoy your videos and are, as a consequence, negatively affected in their dating lives in this way? ;)

She was on fast on imp festivals like janmashtami and navratri etc. No tea or any beverages. Fruits in between meals. Vegetarian diet. The benefits are numerous. Whereas me and my dad fast one day a week. It's beneficial as my dad suffers from high bp and avoiding salt the whole day helps. We do eat fruits in between as it helps to maintain energy.

      Yes, I agree with you to drink water!
      People don't get nearly enough water their body needs. Obviously a good healthy amount, don't go overboard.. which has its own consequences.
      Throughout the day, I drink a modest amount of water - like between 70 to 100 ounces or so.
      I add a pinch of Himalayan sea salt for electrolytes & essential minerals, especially when fasting.. which is every single day. Not a ton of salt, just a good, decent pinch to keep my electrolytes in check and keep from feeling lightheaded or faint.
      If you drink a lot of (plain) water while fasting and you pee a lot, you're flushing out *everything* - essential minerals and all.. and you can quickly feel lightheaded, dizzy, weak, tired, headache etc
      Drink your water.. let your system flush/carry away all the garbage sitting around inside your body and clean itself from the inside out 💦
      ✌🏽 & 💜

    Anecdotal evidence: I’m 21 m about 180 lbs. I’ve been eating one meal a day for almost 6 years, almost always at night (5pm-10pm). I went from being 240 lbs to a steady 180 lbs, a large percentage of that weight is actually muscle. I do full body workouts about 5 days a week which are usually 2-3 hours long (intense weight training) My quality of life is absolutely fantastic and the only medical issue I have is IBS which I developed prior to changing my eating habits. My diet consists of meat, cheese, black coffee, fish, vegetables and usually rice or pasta. Sometimes I eat ice cream. Oddly enough I don’t really think of it as a diet or anything like that I just started doing it one day and found that I felt better. On days I have eaten either breakfast or lunch I feel absolutely miserable for the rest of the day (low energy, exhaustion, mood swings, bloating etc…) I don’t think fasting like this is good for everyone, but it’s worked really well for me and there’s no way I’d ever change my eating habits. That said, I don’t think it’s something you can do if you’re going into it with the mindset of it being a short-term diet. I actually know a few other guys at my gym that do the same thing and they all swear by it.

      @Ray K This is why proper clinical trials are so important.
      How can you possibly say that we haven't seen anything negative?
      You'd have to have detailed and comprehensive data on a vast number of practitioners, to even begin to make that claim.
      One of the most important functions of clinical trials, is to mitigate cognitive bias.
      In that, the practitioners may have similar underlying diseases, caused by fasting, but because of their faith that their God wouldn't have prescribed something for them, if it wasn't 100% safe and beneficial to them. Do they'd be likely to attribute the illnesses on something else.

    My church encourages fasting one day each month (for 2 consecutive meals). Part of a spiritual fast is: 1. donating the money you save (by not eating) to charity, and 2. taking time to meditate & pray about something specific during your fast.
    (Of course, this is only if fasting is appropriate for the individual, considering things like health conditions, age, etc. And you can fast on days other than the designated day if you want -- especially if you have something particularly important you want to concentrate on.)
    It's always interesting when I see science backing up something I believe in religiously. A lot of people view science & religion as opposing viewpoints, but I believe the opposite. I think the more we learn about science, the more we can see them align with each other.

I personally tried IF where i stop eating at 4pm and eat my first meal at 8AM i have always been a breakfast person and the only time i had to adjust my meals time was dinner. So i still got to fast for 16hours and eat for 8hours which basically means just 2meals and a snack. It is impossible to squeeze 3 meals into 8hours. I saw results from the following morning. I also go to the gym in the mornings so the results were visible immediately from high energy and my tummy was a little flatter. Within 3days i knew i had to make this my lifestyle. IF works

I think it's more about working with your body, seeing what it needs, but ultimately you decide when to eat. You're both the toddler and the parent - you're the one who pays attention to their body and says "you know what I want right now, is bread" and you're also the parent who says "it's an hour till supper time you can wait until then, and I see you want bread but let's also have some balance"

  • @PerryBowden

    During fasting, insulin declines, and it is believed that this reduces insulin resistance in the body, allowing for the more efficient use of glucose by the cells. While this makes sense, I am also stuck in the older kind of thinking, which is the idea that when you go a long time without eating, your metabolism slows, so once you do eat, your body increases glycogenesis, the storage of glycogen from glucose.
    While I can make my peace with moving on from that idea for the time being, eating after a period of fasting will without doubt spike your insulin, and there is some evidence that insulin spikes might contribute to more insulin resistance than a sustained amount of insulin. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @Radial9Gaming
      @Radial9Gaming 6 лет назад +26

      DrEffinSteamy 16 hours is not enough for your metabolism to go down. It will take a few days of no eating for that to happen

    • @PerryBowden
      @PerryBowden 6 лет назад +4

      Radial9Gaming, I used the layman's term of a slowing metabolism as an easy way of essentially saying starvation and storing mode, but I am not sure what source is informing the timeline you are going off of. The evidence shows that skipping a meal is enough time for the liver to increase it's production of glucose. This mechanism is regulated hormonally through a second messenger system, and occurs in response to low serum glucose levels. There is a cascade of reactions that take place through a hormonal feedback messaging system between insulin and glucagon. This is intended to keep blood sugars stable, so it is required to take place fairly quickly.
      This is called Glycogenolysis, and this metabolic state is actually an early stress state...an early fasting stage, which incorporates epinephrine as an early messenger, and raises cortisol, which hinders the action of insulin. The glycogen stores used in this stage only last between 10-18 hours. That's all it takes before gluconeogenesis begins, which is the production of glucose from non-glucose sources, meaning our bodies own amino-acids. This is essentially a starvation state, a higher stress state, where all of the readily available glucagon stores are gone...and this takes place within a day.
      I wont go on about the mechanisms through which this supposedly can lead to weight gain, but the idea in a nut shell is that waiting for either of these states before eating can spike insulin, which is worse for insulin resistance than maintaining a constant state. Additionally, the elevated cortisol is already hindering the action of insulin. Further, in not long at all, it actually leads to increased storage of visceral fat (the fat around the organs, namely in the abdomen), which is one of the largest precursors for insulin resistance, pre-diabetes, and an overall "slower-metabolism", as more insulin becomes necessary over time.

      I think that's why a lot of people pair IF with a Keto or Ketoish diet. i fucked up today, and broke my fast (at the 17hour mark) with a super sugary cookie and i felt awful. Also my stomach got really upset and i didnt ate that much or that unhealthy (chicken breast, rice, later a sandwich). It makes sense to try and up your insuline gradually with low carb no sugar foods.

    • @notjustharry
      @notjustharry 6 лет назад +3

      The only time insulin spikes contribute to insulin resistance is when it is constantly spiking and is very high, like because of carbohydrates (sugar). Hello Doctor Mike! I am a Muslim and every year ( a whole month ) us Muslims fast from sunlight to sunset. For example we would wake up at 5 AM then when the sun comes up no eating no drinking. All the way until sunset. The reason we do this is to feel how the impoverished people feel like. We donate food, money and clothing. We feel so much better every year! When it’s the first day of fasting you feel weak, everything you look at you want to eat it ( once when I fasted for the first day I went to Walmart and I almost bought the whole store😅.) Keep up the good work Doctor Mike!

    I did water fasting for 10days: weight -“235lbs”
    Here’s what happened
    *1-3days is hell thought I would die of hunger 😂(227 lbs) (this is the hardest part)
    *4th day - i felt energized and my mind definitely felt clearer (221 lbs
    *5-6 days - still good but a bit weak (216lbs)
    *7-8 days - I’m not hungry but really sleepy and weak (211 lbs) I’m taking glass of water with a tease spoon of salt at this point so have some of my electrolytes back
    *9-10th day - my sense of smell is really sensitive at this point. I can even smell what my mom is cooking from 500meters away. 😂
    Thought of quitting at the 9th days but decided to push it to 10 days. (Final weight 205lbs)
    Overall weight loss : “30lbs in 10days”
    Ps: Ive gained 2lbs after re-eating so I went 207lbs up to this date. :) did this a month ago

      Hi Im glad that this comment helps, the first 1-3 days is a struggle and the hardest part but as your body transitions from consuming glucose to fats it’s gonna be easier.
      I tried distracting myself by watching movies or playing games during this period. It also helped me to keep distance whenever someone is cooking or whenever my family is going to dinner 😂
      Trust me everything’s gonna be a lot easier after this period.

      It’s actually the health benefits that fasting brings that prompt to do it. Losing weight is just secondary. I have a fatty liver and severe eczema and with just a short period fasting I’ve noticed drastic improvement specially on my skin. And the lab results said I have fatty liver no more.
      I will try a 20days fasting next month! Hopefully I can make it through. 😃

Helps me sleep better at night and kickstarts my brain and body in the morning. I can deal with mild hunger pangs throughout the day and it gets easier after the first couple weeks doing it. Your body gets adjusted to it over time. Your supposed to do a 40 day water only fast once your at a healthy body weight and the stem cells will get released from your bone marrow throughout the fast and they will recreate every cell in your body which cures everything from cancer to heart defects. By day 40 your body should be completely brand new with everything perfect. No issues in any way possible. Dont believe me? Get a bunch of testing done even a MRI and echocardiogram before and after the 40 day water only fast consecutively and you'll be shown a miracle I guarantee it 100%
