You can definitely eat salad, veggies, and some fruit like strawberries and blackberries. It's also about net carbs, meaning total amount of carbs minus fiber. Coffee during the morning/mid-day helped me during IF, and Keto Ice Cream (erythritol) helped with cravings.
@@Selahree My doctors (I'm enrolled in a clinical study wrt metabolic syndrome) recommend net. Main reason is to avoid digestive problems, so fibre is good. Plus we can't really digest fibre anyway. It's like wood chips are very high in carbs, but have pretty much zero nutritional value. My protocol is basically
“If you go on a diet, any diet, go see your doctor”. The problem is, most doctors don’t know much about nutrition. Unless your doctor is specialized in nutrition, don’t ask him or her about what to eat.
Asking what to eat is NOT why you go see your doctor. It's to make sure the proposed diet is safe considering your medications, risk factors, history, etc.
Yep. I was losing a lot of weight within a short period of time to the point where my GP got concerned. All he was able to recommend was meal replacement drinks, which didn't help at all.

Your keto journey was very different from mine. I’ve been doing keto for five years now. I will say it is very hard socially and you definitely have to plan your meals and snacks but personally I do like it. I do break sometimes and that’s tough becoming one donut becomes a whole pizza for dinner but when I am strong and stick with it I see results quickly. When I started I didn’t have the flu either because I was told to keep my electrolytes up and that worked for me. I know when im in ketosis or not based on my energy. When I’m in ketosis my mind so clear and I am full of energy (not hyper or jittery) and when I break keto I just wana sleep all day and my mind goes crazy. Overall it works for me but it does take discipline. What helped me in the beginning was counting my macros and looking up every ingredient of what I ate. After I figured that out, I don’t have to be so strict and it’s much easier for me now. The last thing I’ll say is that for the last year I’ve reduced my fat intake so I primarily eat protein and try to stay below 20 meg carbs a day… o li don’t even worry about adding fat it is what it is. Thank you for sharing your journey and I hope to see an update on any new thoughts on the low carb diet in general.

I lost more than he did by just going on a calorie controlled diet. My starting weight was less than his too. Keto is just a pretentious name for a calorie controlled diet. Meat doesn't have a lot of calories. Biscuits do. So he just avoided high calorie foods and ate low calorie foods for a month. It's a bit of a scam pretending that it is something different from a low calorie diet. Just do what I did and get one of those apps that count your calories. Don't eat any biscuits or cake otherwise you will starve. Eat meat because it has low calories. Eat anything you want as long as it is not too dense in calories. It's much better than this diet.
I lost a huge amount of weight when I did keto. Unfortunately I'm prone to eating disorders and took keto and dieting to an extreme, and was told by my doctor and therapist to stop keto so we could come up with a new plan. Then I gained all that weight back x2. My brother and his wife had huge big success doing keto long term.
When you;ve adapted to keto, you'll feel full much of the time that even if you're bored, you won't have much appetite. There's actually one time that I threw up just because i ate one more pack of nuts after a big meal of bacon, eggs and avocado.
I've done keto for five years to manage my diabetes. Last A1c, 5.4%, zero meds of any type. My 90 day glucose average, 101. In that time, my trigs have halved and my hdl has doubled, meaning I am less insulin resistant and likely in a lower heart risk category. Someone once said to me "I couldn't do what you do" I replied You could if your life depended on it. I was diagnosed with a ER present glucose of 566, an A1c of 14.8% My "cholesterol" (they didn't detail the counts) was 1600+ I went to the ER after spending the day at home semi comatose, per the ER doctor. I then progressed to becoming legally blind for three months. Yes If your life depended on it, you can do anything you need to. My "pro tip" for keto Just eat real food. Forget the specialty stuff Just eat food made my nature, not created by humans. My pro tip for diabetes You don't control a fire by throwing gasoline on the flames. You can't control a disease fueled by high glucose, by eating a diet filled with foods that are high glucose promoting or by eating a high level of glucose in food form, carbs. Meds are great but you can't out medicate a poor diabetes diet. Meds are great but they only treat the symptoms, they do not address the underlying dysfunction, insulin resistance or deficiency, with the exception of metformin. Meds are great but they are simply a band aid. Diabetics need a tourniquet. That tourniquet is a diet of whole carbs that are low carb content Adequate protein to ensure muscle mass security, and a high level of natural fats, IF weight isn't an issue. The nutrition folks like to say that carb is there preferred fuel bit that's not the case. Protein is for muscle repair and growth it's very rarely used as energy. Carb and fat are your fuel sources. But they are not the universal energy source. Mitochondria convert both Glucose and ketones into ATP. ATP is the universal energy source of cells. Biology tells us the body has one preferred fuel, whichever one is most readily abundant. I love keto because it keeps me fulfilling my promise to my wife and child, my parents and my friends. I'm not going anywhere, anytime soon, I have no plans to need a wheelchair or a hospital bed, I lay go down, it may get me in the end, but it's gonna be one he**uva fight and because at the Crux of it, is food I loved before diabetes. Fresh food, whole foods Created by God/nature (however you view it) to sustain life and health, rather than foods created by chemists to extend profit margins. Trust me If this tater loving fool can turn away from spuds, y'all can do anything you want to. You never know how strong you can be Until you have to be stronger than you thought you were. Peace!!
Wow this comment really was an illumination for me (even tough I don't have any kind of health diseases). Thanks for sharing us your knowledge, it really helps people
Tae Altogether about 80 lbs. Simple logic Diabetes is nothing more than the inability to properly regulate glucose levels AND reaction to eating. Insulin resistance and deficiency are the causes but in this statement Why isn't as important as the result. Whether it's resistance or deficiency, the result is the same. Glucose that's higher and higher for longer than is normal. No one denies that carb in the diet is the leading source of glucose in the blood. The body stores very little and it can create glucose but diet is by far the largest source. Only glycogen stored in the liver is available as an energy source, this is about 75 grams/300 calories. About two 12 oz sodas. Creating glucose is inefficient. Only about half of protein and just 10% of fat can be converted to glucose and it takes about eight hours. If our body had to depend on these two methods, we'd be toast. Every Diabetic complication is linked to high glucose levels. In and of itself, diabetes does nothing to the body to damage it, it's the high Glucose that causes it. High insulin levels are linked to the macrovascular complications, kidney and heart disease as well but glucose is ALSO known to cause these. All this focusing on Insulin these new Dr's are suggesting, leaves you still prone to every complication. Let's tie the logic together. Simple statements Eight words Carbs in-glucose up Glucose up-risks up. Now the rules I teach people. The no list No sugar No starch No grains No junk fats. Keep your daily carbs low. 20-50 total grams Keep your carb total per serving low. 2-5 grams per serving. If a serving is six grams, it's off the table. Keep you carbs WHOLE! If it doesn't look like you just picked it from the garden, it's a no. Don't let the nutrition "pros" fool you. A carb is a carb is a carb. They label starches and such differently today but they are still chemically just varying sizes of glucose chains. Starch is still a carb, doesn't matter what John P nutrition expert says. (Fiber IS an exception, as it is typically converted into short chain fatty acids) Adequate protein. Clean less than clean, I am ambivalent. Get your protein from food, not some stupid powder. Natural fats All those "heart healthy" oils are killing us. These oils are both the type of fat we need least and the type that is easiest damaged. Simple exposure to air, light and heat are enough to weaken this fat before it even leaves the plant where it's created. Then they add chemical bleaching agents, deodorizers and coloring to make them appealing. Back to simple logic If what we are told is so accurate Why isn't it working? Why are so many people on statins despite avoiding fat? Why is heart disease still out leading cause of death!? Restrict your carbs Both how many and which ones you eat Keep your counts low in total and per item Test test test and test some more! Detectives can't solve mysteries without enough clues Your tests are your clues to how your eating is impacting your glucose levels and control. The powers that be like to say it's useless but the results will speak otherwise. There is research that shows clearly that high glucose is directly linked to complications. Any level that excess 140 mg/dl (7.7 mmol) is damaging. In addition, high increases in glucose post meal after linked to heart disease. So Test Eat Test every half hour until your glucose spikes and begins falling again. Eat to avoid rising over 140 (7.7) at any point post meal Eat to avoid increases greater than 20 (1.2) You won't starve if you eat the right carbs. Added fat and adequate levels of protein will help with hunger as well.

Next time someone asks why I'm having so much carbs, I'm just gonna adjust my glasses and in the most intellectual possible way say: "I need to replenish my glycogen stores".

I was hoping for a before and after blood test (see how it affects his triglycerides, cholesterol, insulin, etc.). He was also doing plenty of exercise, so it's hard to say how much of the 6-pound loss was attributable to the diet.
When you do these 30 day diet challenges, it would be awesome if you were to do a complete before and after blood work up. It would be nice to see what a keto, or even vegan diet does to your blood sugar, testosterone, etc, when there is no agenda, just pure science.
@@MorainStaria keto is 100% not possible to be done vegan. If you do not want to just drink oil ... defuq ... But the vegan cusine does not offer foods that you can eat while not taking carbs to you. Therefore it is not possible to eat as many as needed to stay between the carb threshold and stay healthy without actually drinking oil, which would just be ridiculous
@@danielminister8414 And even if you manage it, relying on vegetable oil probably means you're taking in a ridiculous amount of hazardous aldehydic lipid oxidation products, even if you go with the much safer olive oil option.
@@MorainStaria I may not agree with the vegan ideology, but I understand and respect it. If you are overweight/unhealthy and are vegan, there's absolutely nothing wrong with going on keto for a couple months to improve your health and then coming back to your vegan diet. Your health comes first. You can do more for your cause if you're living a long a healthy life.
Like I mentioned in my other comment, on Keto, your body begins to eat the fat within you. This gets rid of your excess fat as well as supplys you with constant energy and stops your energy levels from dropping and rising. Also, the cravings are from your lack of sugar. The sugar in things increase your cravings, sometimes, you can even mistake your cravings for hunger. Do not snack either, because everytime your eat, you raise Insulin, which isn't good to do all the time. (Hold back on the nuts too...) This is why it is much better to rather have 2 large, fatty meals with a great amount of salad with it in a day. If you snack between meals, it could also take you out of Ketosis and set you back a day or 2, depending on what you have. My family has been doing the Keto diet for about a month, and it is NOT just for weight loss. It has improved our energy, skin, my mother's hair has started growing back and looking fresh as ever. On top of it all, it has fixed mine, my brother's and my father's 'Leaky Gut' and has cured my father's crazy psoriasis (which he's had for about 6 years). It has also saved my other brother from getting diabetes. Keto is the way folks! 😁

It’s not so much “flushing out toxins” as it is forcing your body to start using fat as its fuel source instead of carbs. You crave carbs more intensely during that time (at least I did, esp. sweets) because your body hasn’t made the switch yet and that’s the cause of fatigue
Jesus Perez your comment reminded me of the spongebob episode where he’s asking the mailman who delivers his mail and if another mail man delivers that mail mans mail then who delivers the other guys and so on and so forth 😂😂😂
Something you left out: Drink more liquids on keto! You get a lot of your water intake from food. When you start keto, you not only lose a lot of water, initially, you also tend to eat foods with less water in them. You can counter this with a lot of soups and shakes, but it's easier to just make a point of sipping water or something throughout the day.
@@satsumamoon because of less glycogen in your body and glycogen is main thing that hold water in your body so on keto you are getting dehydrated if you dont replenish this loss

This was the number one video on keto today. If you’re tired there’s MCT oil and other things that give you energy on keto. I wish like another comment said that you had done pre and post oral glucose tolerance, insulin level, triglycerides and lipid panel because this can be DRAMATIC. I found some pretty helpful information on keto from a chiropractor named Eric Berg. I’m an MD and highly skeptical of a lot of things on line. But the science checks out.
Good to read this. Normally I'm very skeptical of chiropractors. But Dr. Berg is amazing and researches the hell out of everything he posts, usually from credible peer reviewed sources. Glad to see an endorsement from a MD.
I'm guessing someone who wanted more attention, because it seems like he probably spends nearly all of his time split between work, exercise, and RUclips. Most people don't like playing 4th fiddle in a relationship, though tbh there's probably plenty of thirsty people that would be happy to play 6th fiddle for Doctor Mike.
As a doctor he most likely works 3 12's or 4 12's meaning he works 12 hour days for 4 days straight or 3 days straight with all of them being 12 hour days with the next 3 ro 4 days off. or he works a normal 9 to 5 if it is in a small clinic. (i am just making an educated guess on this due to the friends that I have that work in medical)
I have been doing Keto for about 7 weeks now. As someone who is morbidly obese and felt like I was out of control around food, Keto has been a godsend for me. I was 335 lbs on Jan 3 when I started and now I weigh 303. This has changed my relationship with food. You are correct that you have to plan, but I still eat out once a week and I just sub veggies for potatoes or fries and have them leave off the bread. This for me has been the easiest thing in the world to do. I have been able to implement 4-5 days of 16/8 intermittent fasting as well. My sugar cravings are gone!! And I was someone who could eat half a cake in one sitting (like I said - out of control). Some days I do get cravings, but because I feel satiated now I can distract myself and let those cravings just walk on by. This is a lifestyle change for me. I will eat this way for the rest of my life.
I had a similar experience although not with 'keto' per se, just following a regimen of cutting all simple carbs / processed grain out of my diet. A warning, if you eat emotionally (like I do) a major life upset can knock you off your system. I had to have surgery that resulted in an almost 4 month lay-up for recovery and did not adequately plan for the effect of the painkillers on my mood or the effect of basically losing my entire daily routine overnight, long story short I gained back everything in a very short time and am now struggling even harder to get back to just sticking with eating right.
When I did Keto, I added in a few more restrictions and I'm not sure how much credit I can give to those additional factors but they go as follows.. The 5% carbs couldn't come from from refined sugar, and not all at once I did Intermittent Fasting, 18/6 roughly Avoided artificial sweeteners Avoided alternate versions of foods that normally wouldn't be keto (bread, cookies, chips, pizza, etc, but made with "keto approved" ingredients) Pretty much avoided anything marketed towards keto, I was very skeptical and did a lot of research into specifics of everything I purchased and ate Tried to eat home made, natural, unprocessed food whenever possible When forced to eat out..lettuce wrapped beef burgers with cheese and bacon, no sauces, extra lettuce. No diet sodas, only water with lemon Tried not to rely on dairy too much for my macro nutrients, rather have more nuts, for me it was pecans Tried to get in as many vegetables as I could stomach with my meals I did not restrict calories, my goal was never weight loss, it was to combat the inflammation in my joints. I basically ate as much as I reasonably could, during my window, while maintaining the ratio and getting in as much nutrients as possible. I lost about 12% of my body weight in the first 3 months and while I couldn't sustain the diet due to social and financial constraints, it was the best 3 months of my life, and the weight stayed off even after a year of not being on the diet. Notable difference from this video, for me, is that instead of getting hungrier and craving, those became less and less the longer I was on the diet. The mental clarity was not debatable, it was huge, as was the drop in inflammation. I also had more energy, at any given time, than I had normally. Unfortunately as one of the cons, said energy depleted much faster and took longer to restore, like in the video. A second con, for me living in northern Canada, I was much more susceptible to the cold weather while on keto, my body didn't run hot anymore but that was awful in the winter.

I've done keto for five years to manage my diabetes.
Last A1c, 5.4%, zero meds of any type.
My 90 day glucose average, 101.
In that time, my trigs have halved and my hdl has doubled, meaning I am less insulin resistant and likely in a lower heart risk category.
Someone once said to me
"I couldn't do what you do"
I replied
You could if your life depended on it.
I was diagnosed with a ER present glucose of 566, an A1c of 14.8%
My "cholesterol" (they didn't detail the counts) was 1600+
I went to the ER after spending the day at home semi comatose, per the ER doctor.
I then progressed to becoming legally blind for three months.
Yes
If your life depended on it, you can do anything you need to.
My "pro tip" for keto
Just eat real food.
Forget the specialty stuff
Just eat food made my nature, not created by humans.
My pro tip for diabetes
You don't control a fire by throwing gasoline on the flames.
That tourniquet is a diet of whole carbs that are low carb content
Adequate protein to ensure muscle mass security, and a high level of natural fats, IF weight isn't an issue.
Fresh food, whole foods
Created by God/nature (however you view it) to sustain life and health, rather than foods created by chemists to extend profit margins.
Trust me
If this tater loving fool can turn away from spuds, y'all can do anything you want to.
You never know how strong you can be
Until you have to be stronger than you thought you were.
Peace!!

Wow this comment really was an illumination for me (even tough I don't have any kind of health diseases). Thanks for sharing us your knowledge, it really helps people
Tae
Altogether about 80 lbs.
Simple logic
Diabetes is nothing more than the inability to properly regulate glucose levels AND reaction to eating.
Insulin resistance and deficiency are the causes but in this statement
Why isn't as important as the result.
Simple statements
Eight words
Carbs in-glucose up
Glucose up-risks up.
Now the rules I teach people.
The no list
No sugar
No starch
No grains
No junk fats.
Keep your daily carbs low. 20-50 total grams
Keep your carb total per serving low.
(Fiber IS an exception, as it is typically converted into short chain fatty acids)
Adequate protein.
Clean less than clean, I am ambivalent.
Get your protein from food, not some stupid powder.
Natural fats
All those "heart healthy" oils are killing us.
These oils are both the type of fat we need least and the type that is easiest damaged. Simple exposure to air, light and heat are enough to weaken this fat before it even leaves the plant where it's created.
Then they add chemical bleaching agents, deodorizers and coloring to make them appealing.
Back to simple logic
If what we are told is so accurate
Why isn't it working?
Why are so many people on statins despite avoiding fat?
Why is heart disease still out leading cause of death!?
Restrict your carbs
Both how many and which ones you eat
Keep your counts low in total and per item
Test test test and test some more!
Detectives can't solve mysteries without enough clues
Your tests are your clues to how your eating is impacting your glucose levels and control.
The powers that be like to say it's useless but the results will speak otherwise.
There is research that shows clearly that high glucose is directly linked to complications. Any level that excess 140 mg/dl (7.7 mmol) is damaging. In addition, high increases in glucose post meal after linked to heart disease.
So
Test
Eat
Test every half hour until your glucose spikes and begins falling again.
Eat to avoid rising over 140 (7.7) at any point post meal
Eat to avoid increases greater than 20 (1.2)
You won't starve if you eat the right carbs.
Added fat and adequate levels of protein will help with hunger as well.

Leaky gut is such a silly term though... I always smile when I see it, or maybe I just have a mind of a middle schooler

Thanks for going on the journey and sharing your experience! I was sick on keto for months before I felt better.
Yeah, depending your your stage of health, you could feel pretty sick on Keto, but that is just your body flushing out all the toxins.
It’s not so much “flushing out toxins” as it is forcing your body to start using fat as its fuel source instead of carbs. You crave carbs more intensely during that time (at least I did, esp. sweets) because your body hasn’t made the switch yet and that’s the cause of fatigue
In conclusion, Dr. Mike is single.

? Why?
@@satsumamoon because of less glycogen in your body and glycogen is main thing that hold water in your body so on keto you are getting dehydrated if you dont replenish this loss
How much more water , I’m on keto and I’m drinking 6-8 cups but not sure if I need more cuz I feel weak but don’t wanna drink too much
@@Thelittleclipstore you dont need to drink much more than this but you should up on intake of electrolytes like potasium and sodium you could for example instead of two cup of water two cups of bone or chicken broth

Best thing about Keto is it takes you off of sugars and make you aware of just how much sugar is in everything. I wish Dr Mike had a way to track if he was still in keto like the pee strips or a blood sugar meter.
"Two steps forward, and one step back is still one step forward..." Mind. Blown. I dunno why I never thought of it like this before =o
But doesn't the saying go "one step forward and two steps back"? 🤔 I've always heard it like this
@@cynthia7468 true, but does it really matter though? Who knows maybe when he was growing up he heard it differently, or that was how it was translated to him when he was young. Keto definitely works, personally I lost fifteen pounds a month for three months despite zero exercise. And now that I'm working out again I'm getting even skinnier (although technically gaining weight due to increased muscle mass). I don't even miss having rice and bread, although I do miss being able to have noodles and fruit.

Same, congrats to you! 💗
Damn I'm so proud of you and feel so motivated thank you!!🙏
Congratulations!!! Keep up the good work!
Awesome 👍

When I did Keto, I added in a few more restrictions and I'm not sure how much credit I can give to those additional factors but they go as follows..
The 5% carbs couldn't come from from refined sugar, and not all at once
I did Intermittent Fasting, 18/6 roughly
Avoided artificial sweeteners
Avoided alternate versions of foods that normally wouldn't be keto (bread, cookies, chips, pizza, etc, but made with "keto approved" ingredients)
Pretty much avoided anything marketed towards keto, I was very skeptical and did a lot of research into specifics of everything I purchased and ate
Tried to eat home made, natural, unprocessed food whenever possible
When forced to eat out..lettuce wrapped beef burgers with cheese and bacon, no sauces, extra lettuce. No diet sodas, only water with lemon
Tried not to rely on dairy too much for my macro nutrients, rather have more nuts, for me it was pecans
Tried to get in as many vegetables as I could stomach with my meals
I did not restrict calories, my goal was never weight loss, it was to combat the inflammation in my joints.
