- I present here some of my thoughts regarding General Joshua Chamberlain of the 20th Maine Infantry. During the initial deployment of the 20th’s line of battle along Vincent’s Spur, Chamberlain notes in several accounts of his mounting a “great rock” or “high rock” that would provide him with a better view of the advancing Confederate troops. Using his accounts of this event and hypothetical thinking, I review the “large” or “great” rocks found along his theoretical line of battle. My intention was to present my thoughts, and perhaps open conversation on this never noted theory. We will never know the actual rock Chamberlain used to view Confederate troops but it’s fun to consider.
