Fan Friday Request:
"Hello,
Thank you for the Letterman channel. It has been a joy to get a daily dose of the greatest shows that I enjoyed growing up with. There was one bit that I’d like to see but I’ve never seen it make it to RUclips before.
It was a remote where a teen took his driving test live on the show. The show covered it like it was a car race. I remember it having in car footage and ariel footage which at the time was rare like you would today. I recall the teen not being a terribly good driver and that he was handed his new licence at the end by the State Governor. It would be a blast to see again!
Paul, Toronto, ON, Canada"

Welcome to the Letterman RUclips Channel, home to all your favorite clips from Late Night and Late Show - as well as conversations with the writers, producers and performers who helped make it all happen. These highlights have been artisanly-produced, carefully-curated, and chosen completely at random by an old computer that used to pick numbers for the New York Lotto back in the 90’s.
I am a close friend of Paul and can tell you he moved from New Jersey to the west coast he has a career in the communications technology field. He met a wonderful girl, they wed, and they now have a son & daughter He plays golf now and then and has played in league softball. He drives like an ace, because he had plenty of practice in New Jersy first, if he were here, I'm sure he would thank you for your support.
This is perfection-a snapshot of Dave’s comic perfection and the shows tone. Legend.
This was hysterically funny and is the kind of segment that is much too expensive to do today. This is what made Dave's "Late Show" great. Thanks for sharing.
Letterman was flawless.. Letterman is the Gold Standard of talk show host
There is STILL no off position on the genius switch.
OMG Biff with the gun! LMAO. Also, this kid is just the sweetest. How brave to do this on Dave's show! Any chance you all could track him down now and see how his driving is these days?!? And Dave critiquing every step given his own driving record is "chef's kiss".
Also, in PA when I took my test in the 80s, we had to make a left turn into a stall, get our passenger door < 1 ft. from the rt wall, and then K turn out and exit. I didn't get within the required foot on my first try, and the STATE TROOPER I tested with just opened his door and left me there. A bit much on the shame scale for a 16 year old, don't ya think?!?!?
Hey it's me! I tracked myself down for you! My driving records been an ebb and flow since that day, but I'm still standing.
Any relation to Barack? He could probably get you my driving record for free.
@@sarkissyen OMG you are the best to take the time to reply! Truly. Just as kind as you were in this bit. ; )
I hope life has treated you well since your courageous driving test on national tv. I think Dave and Barbara Gaines ought to fly you out to be on their new podcast....
@@kristinemunholland8980 Hmmm, I don't think parallel parking on a podcast would be as funny... ;)
Hey that's me on my 17th birthday!
Still got the necklace?
@@MattTee1975 haha, traded it for a gold chain, so not much better.
You sir are a legend, not one ounce of dweeb in ya!
@@paulspears7141 Thanks Paul, I've been trying to make non-dweeb decisions throughout my life, glad you think it worked!
Was this scripted in any way?
Bif in that damn gun! 😆😆
The chopper! 😆
Congrats to you. I am a new driver in NJ too! I took my road test and passed last April. Good luck young man!
Missing this kind of humor these days.
This is so feelgood.
" there's Biff with a gun" that's a phrase you don't hear much. 😆
I took my driver's test in 1970& I couldn't parallel park but I got my license!!Guess the tester thought I was cute!😉
Cute? Little full of yourself aren’t ya.
@@franknacc1718 -heh Frank, still cute at 68!!!!😉😉😉😉

This reminds me of the typical "stupid" early Letterman programming that I absolutely loved. I don't believe I saw this before. Thanks to the fans that requested this and thanks to The Letterman Crew for posting it!!
Dave has hardly anything to work with but is hilarious throughout
I failed my driver's test in 1994. I passed my second test.
Dweeb
I would have been so nervous, even today
You can't imagine.
That kid is wearing the most 1999 outfit that has ever been 1999'd.
he'd be my boy Billy if the sweatshirt was green, necklace and all
The examiner looks like Homer Simpson
This segment got remade almost verbatim on Dutch TV back in '99.
That's fine, we all know who the original "parallel parking kid" was.
Can you post the bit with the kid who was going to boston university dave nicknamed “the bar?” Paul came up with a theme song for him too
I had forgotten about that, but would love to see it again!
I'll have to visit Nutley, NJ someday.
It's quite lovely. Go to Ralph's Pizza.
I just looked it up. "Great Homestyle Italian Cooking in Nutley since 1961" Based on the pics it looks like a quaint little place 👍🏻
Poor kid. All that added pressure with the cameras and producers around. There is no way he would have actually passed but all the production value was already contributed to the finish. Hilarious. Also nice to reminded of Gov. Christie. She was certainly a governor for the people.
Governor who?
@@MattTee1975 Former NJ Gov. Christine Todd Whitman. Oops. Stuck in the 90s! She was often referred as Governor Christy (at least back then and in my circles in PA & NJ). Not to be mistaken with later Gov Chris Christie. It's just a coincidence in names. I can understand the confusion.
Edit, i should have just said Gov. Whitman, lol.
How did he pass?
I didn't hit any cones, I was told that was the trick to passing. ;)
@Paul Fiore no cones in vid, funny answer.
Must have been a great experience, I hope the kids at your school treated you kindly afterwards, you were a good sport and it is a classic tv segment. Best wishes to you.
He should have been failed for not parallel parking properly. He ended up way too far away from the curb. Just saying.
They already had the governor booked. It was too late.
Like Bob said, there was wiggle room on the parallel parking 😄

The best!
yes, that was fantastic
Dave post the Martin Short "Why they won't be on the show" clip! Thanks!
Man, I wish that happened to me when I passed my first road test...
Turn, turn, turn
I really like watching clips like this. And all of this stuff is evergreen comedy, which is great. Jimmy, Jimmy & Stephen have become so political that I doubt I'll watch their shows in the future.
It's amazing how captivated I was by this video. Letterman easily found solid humor in the most basic gags. Hell of a lot more entertaining than Colbert's vaccine dance.
I never missed Colberts Comedy Central show, loved it, but can't stand his network show. I never liked the others, Kimmel is OK, but I have never watched a whole show.
Theres nobody near as good as Dave was.
I don't mind some political humor, and to be fair, 1999 was a comparatively innocent time when people of all stripes were far less anxious about the state of their country. But overall I think you're right. I once loved Late Night TV and now I barely watch it as it is less about comedy an entertainment as it is about "clapter" and soap-box monologues. I mean, I get why they are doing it, but they are mostly preaching to the choir and it doesn't really change anything. We need to bring actual comedy back into late night.
Sorry but you even don’t know in the slightest of what „political comedy means“ You have no Journalist that ask tough questions. And you are picking one of the fun parts of Dave and comparing it to the Politik soft parts of the others. You could not do such a show today. These show where like social media in their days. And hardly people knew of what was going on. That’s why we revisit them today. Now everything is instant. And this is a big difference.
@@sayeager5559 that’s a perfect attitude. You take a zip and you know it all. Shows competence and good awareness and sovereignty. How to get a full picture of something works like this. 😃
today's hosts don't even try
Fair-thee-well to that screaming idiot Corden.
I have to admit, if that was me, as soon as the governor handed me the license, I would have driven off with the blonde model.
BTW-i was in Tom's River, NJ.
I feel sorry for Bob, who was clearly pressured to give this lummox kid a pass even though his driving was terrible and he would have been a danger to society. I hope Bob wasn't fired the next day.
Hey! You're a... You're a... lummox kid...
@@sarkissyen I take it back. I'm sorry, sir: you're not a lummox kid.
@@the8ctagon right, now I'm a lummox adult!
September 21st, Beautiful! Put it in park!.
"I went to school. I left early." That was always my way!
Hard to put on your right blinker when the car is turning left on that curved road.
Paul Shaffer didn't think about other drivers on the road. haha I drive to and from work every day with people like that!
State law prohibit's certain portions from being televised?
The Governor "Well done. After all this. I don't know how you passed it."
The driving test wasn't too hard and I'm a lousy driver!
Standards are very low here in America huh?
Drivers Ed requires Driver's Head 🧑🎓
They actually test drivers in Jersey? Can't tell by the way they drive...
Stopping so far from the line, he musta' be practicing being on his phone in traffic. Dead-on giveaway.

What do you want to know?
@@sarkissyen what’s up dude!!! Hopefully you drive better nowadays 👍🏼
@@GabGotti3 debatable.
@@sarkissyen it would be awesome to hear how this all went down (how the state of NJ allowed it etc)

Had a space for a bus to parallel park in... 🙄
I wonder what happened to him. Where he is now.
