I love this clip because it reminds me how awkward and nervous I was as a teen male in the 80's who was really skinny with zits all over my face --- if somebody said I was gonna be on national TV doing parallel parking I would've cried and shat my pants LOL
Every now and again, i'm on my 3rd floor balcony, and i catch someone trying to parallel park. You can tell the ones that don't live in the city, because they have no idea what they're doing.
The camerawork (and directing/editing) of this bit was brilliant. There's the Letterman Show, and then there's all the rest, doing Letterman. Everyone freely acknowledges it! When you see the original article again, like this clip, the contrast is unsubtle. I'm so happy Dave has this channel!!!!! What a wonderful way to go through the archives! I have a weird musical request: Eric Burdon once came on and sang "C.C. Rider" and Paul played an incredible solo, one that I used to rewind and watch over and over again. This would have been in the 80s, like '84, '85. Possibly the summer. Would love to see that again!
I still can't figure out why Leno had better ratings than Letterman in the 90's --- Dave was still doing original and funny bits like this one while Jay was just sitting at a desk making lame commentary with celebrities --- Letterman had way more comedic talent
@@rattalesbostonrockroll4960 yes I agree, and it always baffled me why Leno held the #1 ratings over Letteman in the 90's --- Leno had more A-listers I guess, but Letterman was far superior with the comedic wit which made him a lot more entertaining
The thing is, when this was on, I took it for granted. Now, nobody does this kind of stuff. This is still hilarious decades later, but if one of today's guys did it it would probably be try-hard and unfunny. So I'm grateful for the lightning in a bottle of Dave and his writers, and Ruperts and Pat Farmers.
God I miss Dave. He had the greatest bits. I even had a Letterman cake with a top 10 list at my high school open house, and went to college for broadcasting. These kids are pretty much from my generation. Just 2-3 years younger. Nice to hear teens who are fairly well-spoken and not saying “like” every other word. 🙄 I doubt if most teens today can parallel park. Or most adults for that matter. A few of these cars are real boats by today’s standards too, and with no backup cameras or parking assist lines. My first car was a stick, and I can remember parallel parking in my driver’s test. As I remember I did okay. Not perfect, but passable. I feel like driver’s tests used to be harder than today. Or at least judging by the ways people drive they must have been. I regularly see people driving with their lights off at night, not using their turn signals, not knowing how to use a roundabout, not stopping at stop signs, and every other thing imaginable. Drives me nuts. No pun intended. 🚘
In 75 driver's Ed was the highlight of my school year. I transferred schools in the middle of the term and the only class with room was an all girl class.
If you are a female that means nothing. If you are a guy, that is a bonus. lol I had a few all girl classes that the "men" would have nothing to do with. Let me tell you what, when the guys jaws were dropping because I am strutting around with girls talking to me in the halls and giving them rides home, I had the last laugh. 😏 Typing, simulated model office, ten key, basic programing and cooking were not on the top of the tuff guy list of electives. But each and every 1 of those things set me decades ahead of my male piers. As well as the attention and respect of a lot of girls. (btw, I also took auto shop, weight lifting, advanced swimming to name just a few others too. lol)
@@WW-wf8tu I never saw the benefit of all-girl classes in high school --- I wasn't gonna take business or home ec just to have girls around me LOL --- the only time I had for girls was maybe on a Friday night if they were drunk and wanted to make out
I drive a Land Rover here in Jamaica, so parallel parking isn't a thing that usually happens, but I know how to do it. They're all starting too far back and too far from the car parked to the side of them.
Yes. They started from the wrong position ( except Dave ) which made it almost impossible to pull in smoothly in one try. Surprised their fathers didn't coach them better. Guess they learned as they got more practice.
How do you put in viewer requests? I’d like to see a compilation of Dave’s interactions with that robot arm thing that used to hand him the viewer mail on Late Night. That would probably be a lot of work, but somebody should do it.
That’s sort of typical Dave…hilarious and inventive idea, yet turns out to be…kinda cruel. I felt for that poor kid Paul. He’ll be taking some ribbing from his classmates the next day.
Only Dave and his team can turn parking a car into something I wanna watch twice 😊
👍🏽😂👍🏽
That's why Dave is a legend --- he could convince millions of people to spend 20 minutes watching nervous teens park cars 😂
Agree...😅😅
Dave also failed. In a real driving test, if one of your tires goes up on the curb, you fail.
The technical and directing team behind this bit were brilliant. Hats off to everyone involved.
What a great bit. It was riveting and anything where Dave can improv to a live situation always works.
It was little skits like this that made Dave must watch TV 🤣
I really miss Dave --- he made the 80's and 90's seem so fun in a very wholesome way, without swearing and other offensive stuff
I was yelling "cut the wheel!!, Turn turn turn!. I never realized how fascinating it is to watch people try to parallel park
Same here!

Parallel parking as spectator sport 👍 No pressure, kids!
Paul earned an extra 10 points on his driving test for wearing that smart-looking sweater vest.
G-d bless Dave and his social media people. I needed this: this summer's time to teach my kid to drive!
'G-d'?

Does driving with an IFB in your ear constitute distracted driving?
What ever happened to automatic seatbelts?
Good question.
Lawsuits
My sister's car in 1990 had one --- I think they disappeared quickly after that --- they were actually kinda dangerous?

Wow. Hopefully they are a lot better at parallel parking.

When I lived in china 1 of my favorite things to do was watching people with $ 500,000 sports cars trying to parallel park. 90% of them failed
This is why I haven’t owned a car since I moved to NY in 2002. Driving’s okay, but parking’s, um, not.
I don't mind parking at all. It's finding the space that's the nightmare.
