BMW E39 M5 M-Audio Subwoofer Install

- "M Audio" was a sound package available on the E39 M5 for the 2001-2003 model years, production dates 9/00-6/03. All other M5s came standard with DSP, a step above the standard Hi-Fi sound system standard on all other E39 5-series models. Regardless of your BMW E39 model, you can add the M Audio subwoofers IF your car has DSP (carpet trunk ceiling with Nokia 4" woofers). Here's how to mount and wire the new 10" subwoofers.

It's enjoyable seeing you giving that gorgeous M5 the attention and facelift upgrades it deserves.
"I don't like that much bass anyways ... " Installs two ten inch subwoofers.
:D
he just wants to show off his car, to have ti max upgraded, he will probably never use more than 10% of power on that sound system.
If you knew anything about the sound you would probably agree with that statement...
Dont know if anyone gives a shit but if you're stoned like me during the covid times then you can watch pretty much all of the new movies and series on InstaFlixxer. I've been streaming with my gf for the last days xD
@Fletcher Dominic yup, been watching on Instaflixxer for years myself :D
Wow what a great resource of information for e39 and potential e39 M5 owners. Im finally in the market for one and these videos will be invaluable when looking to do new projects or needing tips on what to look out for when buying. Thanks for putting the time into these vids and sharing your passion that some of us can relate to
Thank you so much for that comment! This is exactly why we make these videos. When I bought my M5 four years ago, I couldn't find anything about it online like this, so I set out to fill that void with my own content. I'm super glad you enjoy it!
Great info!!! Thanks a lot for your time.
Very Nice Ryan. Keep up the videos on your car and others. I just purchased a 2003 330i and starting some small DIY. Love the videos! You are a master at doing what you love!Take care and Keep them coming.
very helpful video to see i can do this on my 2003 e39 530i it has hifi sound system with the 2 speakers on the rear deck i will probably replace them with aftermarket 10” subs and add door speakers in the rear
Thanks for another great video. Always appreciate your help in making these jobs less frustrating. Kudos to you Ryan!
Those can be fitted non DSP system aswell, but then you need a little amplifier also to run those subwoofers and take signal from rear speaker connectors. I fitted that ”Crappy” nokia sub box in e39 sedan with basic audio, I can tell the diffrence is like day/night. Best way to get that basic audio upgraded is OEM subwoofers. Reardeck/front door speaker upgrades is not worth it.
could you tell me more details? I have 98... would like to have more bass
If you still have that rattle that developed from the new subs you should try jamming an old sweatshirt or jacket back behind the rear headrest and rear window, it cured my dreadful rattling problem. But then again maybe your rattle isn't as bad as my E46's was...
I'm only getting the rattling if I turn the bass all of the way up and then crank up the volume. The rattling you were having was from the rear deck finishing on top of the frame. The better way to do that on your car would have been to put some more insulation under the parcel self itself. Thanks for the tip though!
awesome video buddy!!!
Looks great!
How do you like the new sound? Does it rattle or vibrate? Great solution, I had no idea you could put 10s back there. Was it worth it overall to you?
Bass is a lot stronger, it's definitely a worthwhile upgrade. There are definitely some rattles and vibrations, as this was not best place to put two large subwoofers. They moved under the front seats in the next generation 5 series.
I'm sure they sound hella good
Use Part# 61131378136 to connect to the car's harness, rather than wasting time ripping apart the nokia box to salvage wiring any wiring and connector...
Just need to get pins to crimp onto wires (not sure part# yet for the pins) to use on the 61131378136 part so it plugs up to the existing harness in the car and also determine which pins match up to what.
you need circular contact 2.5 part# 61131376191 x8 to crimp onto the donor harness, match up like wiring to the correct pinout using the 61131378136 connector.
using these crimpers: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014V5LUPI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
clips right up. no ripping apart the nokia box.
If you dont have a donor harness, you will have to get 8 more 61131376191, some wire like that of what is used for the harness from the car, two 61138352311 (they connect to the M-audio subs, and clip together), 61131378944 so that it can clip to the underside of the deck. Also some cable clips like 61138368029 to tuck the wiring up between the m-audio subs and the back of the rear seats.
This information is gold, thanks!
awesome vid man. love how much time and detail you include. what a clean machine!
I bet you would have a nervous breakdown if all E39s just disappeared all of sudden..
You're not alone.. ME TOO!
Hello dear,
hope everything is well and good at your end.
Well those woofers are really expensive on ebay. I am searching them locally in scrap.
Could you suggest me about door speakers as well. The factory sound is really not worth listening it. what brand speakers shall i replace them?
Door speakers : 5.25"
Rear deck speakers : 5.5"
Million thanks for your kind help and valuable support.
regards

That's a good question. I've always found my factor DSP door mid range and tweeter speakers perfectly acceptable for a car from this time frame. However, if looking to upgrade in an E39 or E38, I think BSW (Bavarian Sound Werks) is the way to go.
Friend, could you check parametrs of these subwoofers? I would like to upgrade my DSP audio but price for me is really to much..
I HATE pulling the rear deck out. Looks a ton easier on the cars with split fold seats though...
I've done it enough times now that I can do it in about :30 minutes! Split fold seats certainly do make it a lot easier though.
Good job well done!
"Some 72 inch sub setup that takes half of your trunk space"
Ryan - Big fan of the E39source... will you ever upgrade the speakers to the BSW ones ?
Thanks Jason! I have no plans to go to BSW, the stock system with the 10" M-Audio subs suits me very well right now.
Excellent video thanks alot, you have just made the project that I wish to make, My car has standart DSP, last week there was an M5 sitting next to my car who has M5 woofers and the sound quality was far different, Guys if you want to make this conversion watch it carefully, Just one question, you have said the woofers are 10", do you think standart 10" woofer (Infinity Reference 1060W would fit into the space or will it be needed a special plastic housing to attach the subs to the back of the car?
again thanks for the excellent video :)
That's a good question. I don't know what makes a 'standard' woofer. It would need three holes that can be threaded from the top of the car... if that works out, and they're dual voice channels, I bet they would work.
Hi Again, Do you know the impedance of 5.25" mid bass and subwoofers? thanks alot inadvance
Cumhur Ceken I'm sorry, I don't have the technical figures like that!
im planing on i might not but im planing on getting a 540i and im wonder with modifications to the area to fit them would it be possible to use the factory location
The subwoofers can fail easily be installed on the 540i as long as you have DSP audio from factory. You don't have to cut the larger holes out for the subwoofer, but you may get better audio quality if you do.
Does anyone know what part number or what the nokia wire harness is called the actual wire that connects to the nokia module. i am trying to find a spare one incase i mess up my OEM one thanks.
There are several part numbers, depending on exactly how your vehicle was equipped, and what the production date is. You can find yours here: www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/partgrp?id=DE93-USA-02-2000-E39-BMW-M5&mg=84
I'd still like a sound clip vol no higher then 75%, bass @ 25% thanks. Also their are 4 wires to each speaker I take it for duel coils?/what's the wattage on those speakers? Thanks ahead & thanks for posting the DIY's
I actually tried a few clips with a condenser microphone. It just buzzes and clicks or sounds totally distorted even after some editing. In person it just sounds like 40% better bass response over the DSP. Definitely better low end response too. I'm not sure of the numbers on these subs either. Thanks for watching!
my 2003 M5 10 inch subwoofers stopped working, but tinny sound comes out. any hidden fuses?
Not that I know of... check the glovebox schematic?
So does the E39 M5 come standard with the "Nokia" subwoofer box? I have a model 2000, build date 12/99. I've e-mailed Ryan, the p/o completely hacked up the audio harness. I finally got my front speakers/tweeters working after 2 years of ownership a few days ago, but I hear 0 bass coming from the car. I'm not an audiophile, and I'm honestly just trying to get some okay sound to listen when I go for a long cruise.
The base audio system for USA M5s is called DSP, which came with the Nokia subwoofer box. I have not gotten any emails from you! Please try ryan@e39source.com. People hack into the factory wiring all the time, and it's hard to determine exactly what they did, and what will be required to put it back to stock. I have lots of pig tails/wiring available if that can help you. Please email me and let me know exactly what you need.
Thanks!
@E39Source Ryan, did you code the DSP unit by changing the SA and VN strings to make the free-air subwoofers play in the correct range? I changed the options in the SA and VN strings in Zeko and coded the DSP with NCS to option 752 M_SOUND //Individual Audiosystem instead of option 677 TOP_HIFI. The sound is amazing, if you don't do this the M Audio subwoofers don't vibrate all over the cabin but just bang, the frequencies that should go to them go to the midbass speakers in the doors, plus the high and midrange speakers also sound better with this coding even if they are still DSP speakers or the new BSW speakers.
I did not make any coding changes to my DSP amp when retrofitting these subwoofers, and I have not noticed subpar audio quality when compared to a factory M-Audio M5. I have since installed the BSW door/rear shelf speakers, and it's still sounding good.
@@E39Source It's probably my audiophile preference, I think you've managed to compare the sound of Bavsound and M Audio speakers in other M5s. What do you think which ones sound better? I can't decide which to go with, I currently have M Audio subwoofers and Bluebus, and now I'm wondering where to go next to complete my music upgrade.
I understand that installing Bavsound will be easier, there is no need to pull wires to the rear tweeters in the rear deck and Bavsound does not provide a replacement for the front midrange speakers, should I keep the factory ones, do they not degrade the sound quality?
@@quliyevroman I honestly don't hear much of a difference. The big pro with the M audio interior speakers is the construction materials and quality- they will hold up longer with the kevlar cones compared to the paper. The BavSound speakers are not a huge upgrade in terms of quality/fidelity, though I do notice they can go louder without distorting. My primary reason in upgrading the interior speakers was for longevity, as my paper cones were over 22 years old.
@@E39Source Thanks for the reply Ryan, ordered Bavsound today on a Black Friday discount, M audio speakers from ebay are like a pig in a poke. Bavsound support replied to me about the mid speakers in the front doors that they are high quality Phillips speakers and don’t need to be replaced, also waiting for delivery of the AVIN Avant 4 which I recently purchased I want to compare the sound with my Bluebus.
''Some of you might be laughing right now'' .. Some ?? i think all of us buddy :)
Oh and all the ''audio guys'' watching the part with placing the 10inch woofer underneath a 5 in hole now be like ...'' oh no he didnt!''
***** Yeah, yeah, I know. I like good audio quality, but I'm not an audiophile. I use Bose headphones and speakers, but we have Magnepans too. I could have cut out the larger openings, but this is good enough for me, and most other people who have upgraded as well.
Please could you post here photo of rear dek after install ? Did you make two new holes on top top of rear deck for the
subwoofers ? Are there now 4 amp cover or just 2 as before? thank you very much
I did not enlarge the subwoofer holes in the sheet metal, or make new holes in the alcantara shelf panel.
Curious if there are any off-brand speakers that would work (without the expense)?
None that I am aware of
What noki subwofer? Good vs no good?
Dear what is the size of each woofer?
Shall I buy them from ebay??
They are 10 inch subwoofers, I would definitely recommend ebay!
Yo I've got an e39 m5 that I wouldnt mind showing off I am doing a few replacement such as clutch change , rocker cover gaskets ,oil seperator hoses and full sound system xustom trunk let me know if your interested in some video s in hd thanks
Hey that sounds great to me! We welcome anything. Go ahead and send me a link to a video whenever you do it and we'll get it on the Source. Can't wait to see your car!
Ryan
Would it work on an 01 740 sport dsp?
Are you selling that dsp housing box which you took that out???
Yes I am, I have the box (not the connector though, I had to cut that.. but some new wire can easily be connected to speakers, since they simply use spade connectors) for sale. I also have the carpet for sale. Was hoping to do a local pick up though (Cleveland/Akron Ohio)
Those M Audio 2 Subwoofers are stock 10”???
Yes
how to remove the back cover of the speakers ???
I have never attempted to do this, good question.
if someone could say how to choose speakers for replacement DSP original subs ? I'm living in Europe and would like it but here
So you want to replace the DSP subs with another speaker that is not the M audio subs?
E39Source right i thinks it's possible. just would have find speaker with simmilary parametrs like m audio speakers
Dear i would ask you that did you install additional Amp to for woofer otherwise how its gonna work with the existing amp?
Wats are those woofer brand and power?
They do work with the existing amp, providing the car came with the black DSP amp. An aftermarket, more powerful amp will make them sound better, but I'm happy with how it is right now. I do not know the specifications on the subs, just that they're E39 M5 M Audio Subwoofers.
Dear million thanks for your valuable reply.
I have e38 2001 V12. My amp is also is black in color. This what all know about amp.
Any idea where I can fet m power subs?
Moreover, incase I Would like upgrade my amp, any valuable suggestion? Does it required all wiring has to be changed or what?
Your kind help and valuable support is highly appreciated.
Aqeel - Dubai
Aqeel Akhter Aqeel, The M audio install for your car would be the same as my car in this video then. I have not looked into changing the amp at all, so I can't much help with that. Good luck!
Million thanks dear.
I will look Into this matter and will sure disturb you Incase I found any difficulty. Heheheh
God good care friend
Kind regards
Aqeel
Where i can find some of these Subwoofer ?
These are tricky to find, and very expensive new, if still available. I would search Ebay, Facebook groups, craigslist, etc.
How come i dont have the dsp but have the nokia subs?
If you have the Nokia subwoofer box, you've got DSP. Perhaps someone replaced the MID with another unit that is lacking the DSP button due to pixel failure?
@@E39Source I honestly dont know. Its been in my family since 2005 when my uncle bought it in germany. In 2019 my dad bought it from him since he got a f10 530d. The e39 is also a 3.0d since we love diesels! When i look into the trunk there is the navigation computer, the radio unit (which i think is a bm53 since i have the info and search options) and a big silver box. No ridges just a plain silver box. Maybe thats the dsp? But again when i look into the infotainment menu on screen there is no option for the dsp (have the 16:9 navigation screen). But it has the tone select with the fader, balance bass and treble. So maybe thats it!?
P.S Its a 2002 bmw with the 16:9 screen, navigation,tv tuner,i think a bm53 radio and 10 speakers although a couple of them dont work so working on replaceing them w/ 2 subs. Its optioned pretty nicely. Has 410k km / 255k miles i think. P.S 2 Maybe it died!?
@@Marin_Medak The DSP amplifier is a large black module located behind the left trunk carpet door. It'd be the deepest module back there against the body. Tone/fader/balance/treble is not DSP. If DSP is grayed out, it's either disabled or broken in some capacity.
@@E39SourceCould be but there is no black box i could check if its behind the silver box but my e39 is in the shop cause it started leaking oil from the oil cooler. But i think that its doesn't have it.
@@E39Source Yup def dont have the dsp, no black box in the trunk.
PLEASE tell me these fit on a 540 e39?
Yes, they do if the 540 has DSP. I installed these on my 2001 540i/6 with DSP.
@@E39Source they will also fit on non dsp if you use a LOC and a small amp
Is m-audio a bmw product or the third party company "m-audio"?
M Audio is referencing an optional part for the E39 M5's. It is not an aftermarket company. You can find the subs floating around on eBay and the like every few months.
-Bobby
***** I meant to say is the M-audio called M-audio because it's from BMW M or because it's from the company M-audio linked here:
www.m-audio.com
Avery D Also thanks for the reply and what a fantastic channel, I hope to own one of these magnifiscent machines one day.
It's M-Audio like BMW ///M audio, as it was an audio package only available on the M5. Thanks so much for the support!
and how much do you want for that box???
+Janis Lapins It's been sold, sorry!
I have one, if you're still interested!
ottobong are you in uk???
wow you're so good! btw can you tell me where you learn all this DIYs?
Thank you! That could actually be a pretty cool video in itself. When I dream up a project that I want to do, I first turn to Google. The key to success in a lot of things is researching the CRAP out of it! I read a ton of forum posts (M5Board, Bimmerpost, anything I can find) to learn about possible problems, compatibilities, trips, tricks, etc. Then you just have to go at it and do the best you can! Take your time, have good lighting, take a break if you get tired, those are all keys to a job well done. :) Thanks for watching!
***** Thank you i really appreciate it;) btw Ryan Yost is selling his car(i hope you know him) it might be a good news for some that wanna buy clean M5 but the sad thing he was the only Guy i knew and became friends:( i don't know how can he do that??? I WILL NEVER Sale MY M5 NO MATTER WHAT. what i wanna say please don't don't do the stupid thing alright!
David BMW I do not know Ryan Yost... but I plan to keep this car for a long time!
