This is possibly the best performance of K622 that I've ever heard! It's not just the incredible richness of tone that she gets from the basset clarinet, It's the brilliance of her phrasing. I wish this was available on CD (or even better, SACD).

The best version of the mozart clar conc that Ive heard on youtube, and possibly ever!
Such class and character effortlessly combined.

Thank you youtube for introducing me to Sharon Kam. This is my favourite version of the Mozart concerto, it just seems to sparkle with personailty.
I have to get some of her recordings!

Excellent musician. I really enjoyed. Here in Brazil, in nordete, we are in need of such an instrument.
I would post this video on my site on the clarinet, so that our students can enjoy this beautiful concert with a basset clarinet.
Where our students are poor and do not have a bus to school. But through this video can enjoy this concert

WOW that is truly amazing! if anyone was wondering she is playing on a basset clarinet, its just like a Bb Clarinet but has keys going down to the low C or lower! Its built a bit differntly because its longer!

    Great :)
I really like the way she acts with the emotions.
It means that she really feels the music.
(By the way: there is no discussion possible, it clearly is a basset clarinet. You can see this because of the extra 'buttons' at the end. (I'm not English))

Great performance. I didn't used to care much for her playing (had a tendency to overdo the music) but she has matured quite a bit over the years. I have a much different opinion now. Equally amazing that she's playing this picec on the instrument for which it was written.

Yeah. Being a composer, I can say that her claim that it's a Basset clarinet is true, seeing as how it frequently goes lower than the standard A clarinet is supposed to be able to go in its range. (Some of the runs would be taken an octave higher if this was an A clarinet!)
In other news, it's nice to hear this concerto on its original instrument. Thanks for posting this!

She is performing on a basset clarinet in A which is an extended soprano clarinet, not a basset horn which is an alto clarinet in F. Mozart wrote the piece for this instrument, (minus a few keys). The extended notes of a basset clarinet are C, C sharp, D and D sharp (or E flat, if you will). She is using a boehm clarinet, not a Germman system horn which fingers differently but has no effect on the range of the horn.

I'm a music teacher and a clarinetist and I say if you put in the time necessary to become good on clarinet, then go for it! I have a friend who started playing trumpet in the 9th grade and ended up majoring in trumpet performance at the Boston Conservatory. It is possible to start a new instrument late and get good at it.

A really great thing about this video is how the who ensemble works well together. Mozart just didn't write a solo. The accompaniment is only slightly less important than the solo. If you want to study this piece, keep this in mind.

If she's playing an A Clarinet, that would explain some of the nasal sounding low tones. Finding a good A Clari that's in-tune and "sweet" throughout the entire range is pretty rare.

Agreed...she does move a lot, but I can tell you as a clarinetist myself that someone standing like a stone statue while playing would be criticized just as much and look like "dead man standing". You must FEEL the music and become a part of it! Cut her some slack...she's a brilliant artist. Did anyone notice her "extra long" instrument?

Her movements are fun to watch, and to a non-musician must look ridiculous, but the truth of the matter is that it's a clarinetist's nature to move when playing. ^^" Either way, she's so amazingly impressive that she could be spinning around in circles and I still wouldn't care.

Text book interpretation but very beautiful to hear and watch her. Brava. Mozart did intent more freedom for ornamentation for this period. I perfer a little more sefl expression and chances than offer in this performance. But then we don't what discutions she had with the conductor before hand. Being a clarinet player myself and having played basset clarinets new and replicas the last movement is more easy movement.

I think it sound better on the basset clarinet but that is by no means necessary. Actually if it wasn't for mozart the clarinet might have been forgotten. Even Haydn didn't know what to do with it, so kudos to mozart. By the way I think the reason he said he disliked the flute was to elevate the clarinet
