I can understand why so many people don't like his interpretation, as it is something way out of the box, but you have to realize that his play is masterful and also an indicator, that we still don't know the limits of the clarinet play, which will eventually lead to other miraculous virtuosos to push these limits even beyond our immagination. amazingly interpreted, bravo.
I completely agree. I can't but admire his playing even if I don't like the piece too much... musically talking it's just a virtuoso showcase, but... what an hell of virtuoso!
I have to say that even though this sounds impressive on the violin, the fact that he can mimic the effect to this extent on the clarinet impresses me like never before.
nice playing, especially in that he tried to capture the feeling of the original violin piece while still maintaining the clarinet tone in the lower register.
What a pleasure to see the clarinet explored so completely here. I have no idea who this modern virtuoso is but I completely respect his technique and flexibility in all ranges. You only need hear Dave Tarras recordings to appreciate the different tone colors available to the clarinet. Whether Klezmer, Goodman or Mozart - talent is talent. Hats off to this cat!
Ok, now lets hear from the professional musician circuit. First, to the hate slingers who did not like his sound, uh, HELLO?!?! The Carmen Fantasy is meant to be played "Klezmer" style...look it up. 2nd his Range. The high note near the end of the first movement he plays is an "E" above Double "C", A full third above the range of the horn. His style is superior, the "showmanship" reflects a LOVE for playing, not arrogance. As a pro clarinet player for over 30 years, I salute him.
That was truly awesome, the fact of making a woodwind sound like a string not loosing its own is amazing, the interpretation, plus the technique, ideas, the high notes, tonation.. One of the bests ive ever heard. Congrats, really. I actually enjoyed it more than the violin XD.
@@yenigehovannessI dont know if you play clarinet, i do. And many clarinetists like Nocolas Balderou, Martin frost..... are all bad musicians and clarinetists. The balderou carmen version is bad and its offending with how bad it is. Yes its true everebody here that is hating this, either cant play like this or they dont know anything about music. Im planing on playing Carmen in the future, so maybe one day you will see my performance online if i post it "if".
I cant name you one clarinetist that plays like this, only Mate. and i cant say my father because he isnt known, and doesnt have any videos, he sttoped practising consistently, and im saying it because Mate himself called him to study in his school, but my father was poor then and could afford to go.
you are amazing , i thought you were one of the best amateurs ive ever seen because of your movie guisganderie , but know i see and realise that you are one of the best professional clarinetist ive ever seen , i really love your tone , i'm trying guisganderie know , because of you ! :p goodbye and my best to you !
i just died and went to heaven!!!!! I'm crying!!!!!! I remember the first time I heard Charles Neidich play Zigunerweisen...spelling?... Amazing!!! Love when people say oh its not possible on the clarinet?? lol
my god. i'm not sure if i want to cry or if i'm about to poo myself out of clarinet-fear. then again... this song has immobilized me so that i am incapable of doing either. i think i'm going to trap myself in the practice rooms now and try to avoid bawling at my own clarinetty-self-suck.
me fui totalmente de espaldas al ver este video.... sin palabras. es increible ver que otro instrumento y mas de aliento iguale el virtuosismo e incluso supere lo que puede hacer el violin....
Mr. Bekavac doesn't so much master clarinet technique as he does "invent" it. With the possible exception of Martin Frost I have never seen someone so masterful of the instrument with things like double tonguing, circular breathing, slap tonguing and stratospheric notes for which no conventional fingerings even exist.
You want comments from the pro music circuit? My specialty is soprano sax. Close enough. See my comments in Part 2. This guy is great. Few clarinetists could do that. He loves music. Listen to his ensemble playing. Perfectly in tune, in time, blended; it's as if he plays duets with this orchestra daily and knows their tendencies by heart. That's the mark of a great musician, not just a great player. It's not my style preference, but I love that he does HIS style so fantastically! Shooshie
you can change sound of your clarinet by.. "changing your throat" or something along those lines. I only managed it twice and have never really been able to reproduce it. My teacher used to it pretty well, but nothing at this level.
I believe it is a Buffet Crampon Festival Clarinet... This clarinet has now been "replaced" by the Buffet Crampon Tosca, which should even been better.
Based on the tone quality it is much more likely to be a Festival model than a Prestige which has a more American timbre. The R.C. is another good guess. I don't know which would be more popular in Slovenia.
Wah.. Is this Amati Clarinet model 615II Full Boehm system ? Can't believe it! Never seen any mouth piece, that can produce this much stable and free blowing with up and down high, low note.
i wonder what setup he uses? it looks to me like a buffet cl. and maybe an eddie daniels ligature? but really truly amazing! and who says vibrato is overrated???
the version of carmen (fantasy) played on the clarinet is much more atractive and sounds much more better than the version played on the violin. i like it twice as musch...at least:)
Interesting arrangement...I don't think he pulled off the violin's double-stops so well, but it was a good interpretation for clarinet. Very mysterious.
11 years later, this is still INSANE
absolutely
Out of this world, love It is a small word!😂

Mate makes playing those killer high notes sound SO easy!
Unnatural musician
Repeatable musician
Something beautiful and wonderful I enjoyed listening to it
I swear Mate Bekavac is THE most underrated clarinet player ever!!!
11 years later, this is still legendary.
By far the best Carmen I've ever heard and one of the best clarinetists. Very unique playing, I appreciate it!
nice playing, especially in that he tried to capture the feeling of the original violin piece while still maintaining the clarinet tone in the lower register.
For me the best opened the possibilities of the clarinet world Thank you.
HIs control is just incredible!

This is the reason that made me love the clarinet bravo u r the king
Absolute control of the instrument.Singing high, mezerizing low notes.Great circular, slapping, general broad feeling on what is music

i'm not sure if i want to cry or if i'm about to poo myself out of clarinet-fear.
then again... this song has immobilized me so that i am incapable of doing either.

Eres hasta el momento el mejor que he escuchado con mucha diferencia. Un saludo

Dave Jones you described his play so perfectly! He is truly one big name in the current clarinet culture.
Really? That's AWESOME! I managed to get that note out once or twice. Of course it sounded like someone was strangling me AND my clarinet =Þ.
Fantastické, úžasné, vynikající, excelentní, ... !!!
I cant imagine that there are people dislike this video
losers....sad clarinet teachers who could not play even a normal C major scale on the stage.
Tout simplement époustouflant!
WOW!!!BRAVO MATE!!!John from Italy..
Great sound!
