- Dobermans ARE DIFFERENT! They aren't like any other dog breed. These are the most important Doberman-specific tips that you MUST know as a Doberman owner. Dobies are very unique dogs that have a different personality and training style to many other dogs and if you aren't using their natural instincts and behavior tendencies to your advantage during training, you'll have an unnecessarily difficult time getting results from training. A few years ago, I started to gain interest in adopting a Doberman, which I held in the ‘Top Three breed considerations.’ I have, now, firmly decided on this breed-- largely, thanks to this channel! Absolutely on target as usual, John. It cannot be stressed enough that these dogs will test their boundaries with you repeatedly and at every turn. It is easy to but crucially important that you not get frustrated and lose your patience with them about this, as it will only confuse them. They will know you are upset with them but will not understand why. Their empathic nature, genetic desire to be your partner, and extreme intelligence get all tangled up. You have to remember they are not being deliberately stubborn or contrary. As your partner...and they do see themselves as equal partners with you...they believe it is their duty-bound obligation to show you when they think there is a 'better way' to do things. patience and especially consistence are the key. We're not going to do it that way... we're going to do it this way and then reward the heck out of them when they let you win. Then they will get it - letting you win makes them win and get them what they desire the most...to please you and make you proud of them.

What a subject matter expert you are on doberman's john!! Thanks again for the great tips. 👍👍👍 I have a neighbor who is sort of a wacko, And she is frightened of the breed. So she called animal control and said some things that were not true. That my dog charged her and ran across the street. Animal control investigated said they were going to give me a written warning. I protested,
And explain explained that my dog Is a velcro dog and highly obedient. Animal Control then said do you mind if we test your dog. I said you can give her any test you want. So they did. And brought two animal control officers. My doberman went through a series of exercises including tests that they gave her. And my doberman passed everyone of them. They withdrew their Warning, Stated that they believed me over the crazy neighbor, Complimented my dog that she was exceptional, And they left shaking my hand telling me what a great dog I owned. But it wasn't just me! It was the fact that these dobermans respond with intelligence and obedience. Now I share this story with people and they Have a hard time believing me. That is, except for doberman owners!

The best part is watching them learn day by day. They will push your buttons and try things. That's where a little love and that consistency will go a long way.

So true with the anchor idea when on. Leash. I’ve got a electric fence which is near one n half acres territory, I love it as the Doberman does. I show her the collar she comes n sits on my feet turned around to have her fit back on, and vice versa come evening. So simple a routine that I have to give her equal credit for helping me to be able to do that. My dog has a strong want but don’t let the want become anxiety and then it becomes more difficult but still possible when working with the Doberman. Show them love and they will give you a load back to you.

I agree with all of the 5 techniques, and they always worked with all my 3 dobies - 1 pup and 2 rescues , so great advice. However, I wish we stop referring to them as dominant breed… they are not dominant, they need leadership and consistency.
All my Dobermans have been trained with word and hand signals. I could have them listen when i was on horseback. I had off leash control in endless situationsincluding other horses, dogs, people and wild life. They love to be a trail dog. Amazing dogs.

It's so true! We have our first dober almost 2 weeks now and man, such a smart cookie. Unreal. I have to tell him about 3 times and he does it. What blows my mind is that he listens with other people around, like in the shopping centre. So much focus on us, his parents. ❤
I had a dobie, kind and sweet angel to the kids, protector when I’m not around, listens to commands from my wife.. knows that my In laws are old and walks with them very gently, everyone loved that doggo 😢

I have an old Chow Chow and a puppy 7 month old Doberman right now. I noticed that Doberman is well connected to your emotions. When I was talking angrily to a stranger, my doberman started to become aggressive as well. I have to learn how to control my emotions as well.
Hi John! 🙋🏻♂️ I needed this Dobie-video today. I was thinking about my deceased Dobie girl, Cera June, (the butt bumper), the other day and this video hit perfectly. Thanks, man. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 P.S. Speaking of building habits and repetition with Dobies, my mom taught my dog, "Cera June, boundary!" My Dobie knew to instantly stop and sit even if she was at a full run. It saved her life once when she was about to run into the street with cars. She immediately stopped from a dead run and sat.

Doberman training can be complicated but they are very intelligent and learn very fast. The doberman is a hyper dog just be patient ❤

Okay, good to know! I thought maybe it was just my dog but now see that some of the things that he does are breed specific. He really does love consistency and routine. He's like a watch with his routine, it's pretty amazing to be honest. They are such great dogs.

Hello we love your videos and have learned a lot from you thank you for all the material you put out there for Doberman owners. We have a 4 month old female and recently we noticed a lot of bumps on her back we called the vet and we are bringing her in but they say it may be grass allergies, when we get out in the grass she likes to roll around , we bathe her once a week it’s been about two weeks they don’t go away yet , anyway just hoping you know anything about, thank you again

Oh yeah! Taught my Dobe to wiggle the nub on cue since we started in confirmation (sp?). He's pretty large for a Dobe so got ribbons as a pup. Our vet said he could win on personality alone on a scale of 1 to 10, he said he's an 11. The judges loved the wiggle.
Yes, giving them purpose and something to work towards is life-giving! They want to please their owners so much.

I love your videos. Bella is my 4th Doberman, and they're so smart 😮. Bella is 3 years old and she will test me. She grew up with Arlo, which was nice. We train everyday, a lot of it is reinforcement, then every once in a while we throw in something new. We use your idea to say "guard " for speak. It works great, especially since she loves everyone. She never looks ferocious, unless she's protecting us from things outside lol. She will bark and come and get me, and tell me all about it, and I am supposed to follow her, which I do. Best dog ever ❤

She uses bells to go potty, and goes on command.
I think I missed his video on why you say “guard” instead of speak?
@@kimreed5160 , that if you are out walking your dog and you feel uncomfortable about someone, you say guard, the dog barks.
This way it looks and sounds like the dog will bite. Good for women out walking their dog alone.

As always, great video! I'm training a service dog right now, and your videos are the only reason I'm successful. Anybody have ideas or tips for biting though? I've got a 19 week old, and I'm covered in bites.
The doberman love bites and they do hurt and tear skin often I know but it's the doberman love and play bites, I use the word (NO) in a strict tone and if they continue walk away for a few minutes the dog will start to understand. Be patient with training the No's with your dobie they truly catch on fast...
Check out Susan Garrett's retrieve video. A really long toy works great and makes it clear to the dog when teeth are on clothing or body parts, it's game over. Also, Joel Beckman's satiation video is particularly helpful. Sara Ondrako has a great video on how to make a snuffle mat with a pocket. Getting them to think is also the key with Dobes. Teaching a new trick or even just sit, down, stand, and mixing it up so you can praise for making the right decision. Hope that helps.

I don't know if it's a phase or if I did something wrong. My 7mo pup is no longer motivated by treats, she has toys but isn't motivated by them. I praise her when she does good.
I am working on leash training (just like your earlier video) she does not want to yield to her leash/ collar. I've had to resort to a choke chain when I take her to the vet or groomers, so she can't pull out of her collar/harness. It's the only training she's been resistant to.
Door dashing went really well, she learned to not cross thresholds without a signal. But, last week she saw one of our roosters and jumped the gate to chase it. It was sudden and unexpected; we've had the chickens and turkeys for years, they are at the fence every day, and my pup has never bothered with them. She chase him into the coop where mayhem ensued. Many feathers were lost, and a turkey was flipped on his back, but no blood was drawn (rooster doesn't cock a doodle anymore - he's to busy hiding behind the hens, now)
Since this event, my Dobie pup is not interested in training treats or her flirt pole, she's never had a favorite toy to motivate her either. She's also avoiding eye contact with me now.
Is this something I need to just work through? Is it a phase? Or, is there something I need to change?

I think one of the biggest things that people need to understand about a Doberman is their need/ desire to be near you is intense. They seriously don’t call them VELCRO dogs for nothing. I’ve had 4 Dobermans, they are all clingy and attentive, and that’s great to an extent. My last surviving Dobe is a nine year old female, and in her older age her clingy-ness has increased exponentially. She has always been clingy but now it’s like DAMN. I love her to death but I have to send her to daycare if I’m off work just so I can have a moment of peace. Great Doberman for sure though!❤
I'm getting a doberman for service work because they are phenomenal dogs who are perfect for my needs, but I am unable to get a job because of my disabilities, and the maximum I can legally even have saved while on disability (which I'm not even on yet) is 2k. The reputable breeders around here sell their dobes for 4k or more (usually 5 or 6k), and don't offer a lot of in-person visits. Do you have any knowledge or suggestions on this? Dobes are amazing and intelligent dogs, and I am thrilled my family agrees on it being the best route for me, I just can't figure out how to manage it

I’m really interested in a Doberman but the separation anxiety issue has me on the fence. Have a lot of you Doberman owner’s experienced severe separation anxiety from your Doberman?
My wife and I have a 6 month old dobie pup who went through quite a separation anxiety phase. We are first time dog owners (wife grew up with dobies but never raised one herself til now) and we live in an apartment and both work and go to the gym every day. We were dreadfully stressed because our dobie Ivy would howl and bark inside her kennel while we were gone. We eventually dedicated a specific special treat that we would give her before leaving (kibble in a kong wheel) and when we returned (pb stuffed kong toy). She would never get those treats any other time. We had to start small and go through a few really rough weeks. We would start with a whole week of leaving for only 15 minutes a day, then the next week at 30 mins, then 45, an hour, etc. we would monitor by furbo alerts (but stopped watching video feed because it would raise our anxiety) and eventually she stopped crying and whining. I’d say it took about a month to really get this down. Now I can leave for 2-3 hours at a time with absolutely no problem, and when I get home, Ivy doesn’t even want to say hi, she goes right to the freezer and sits for her treat.
My doberman was two and half and kept in his kennel for 18+hrs a day. So I got a really cooped up dog with NO training except for potty training. He didn't pull but does now. Doesn't want to eat his food because he wants ours. He will actually eat base boards instead of his own food. We have tried every food out there for dogs. We have a bully pitbull that is trained perfectly and Chihuahuas and German pincher. He just seems very confused and food trainning doesn't work anymore either.
Ive always wanted a dobi but im not sure if i have the schedule to support them. Im working full time from 5am to some times 5 or 6pm. Ill also be going to school for fire fighting. Do you think owning a dobi is realistic for me at the moment. I want the dog to be happy

Hey John I need your help but don’t have the money at the moment for the personal class and I wasn’t sure how else to reach out to you except for this comment, I have a Doberman pup his name is Milo, he’s 17 weeks, I took him to the vet at 10 weeks to get his ears cropped, the same day of surgery they posted his ears and taped them up and charged me over $900. And as you can imagine, his ears look awful now. I took the post off because they weren’t healing. Went to a different vet and got some cream for them, now 7 weeks after the initial surgery, they’re Finally stopping bleeding. But they’re all bent and mangled looking. I just don’t know what to do other then wait for the last scabs to remove themselves and continue posting myself. Any advice would be greatly appreciated I love my dog and want the best for him.

I have a question: I've had 5 Dobermans up until now. The thing is, my 'little' 40kg/80lbs girls is beyond intelligent. I've been around dogs my whole life, and this is some next level intelligence. Yesterday, we were playing 'fetch' which is more I throw the ball, my boy, really big, 50kg? will fetch the ball, but not bring it back: none of the dogs I've ever had played fetch 😂. So the female checked this out, and saw that when I had the ball, I would throw it. She figured that out, and by the 5th throw, she would steal the ball from him and bring it to me. I've never played fetch with her before, we stayed on a farm, and running around in the veld is way more exciting than a ball. Being in town, I now have to keep them busy. My father taught her to jump up when she was a baby, she is 3 now, and it's the one behaviour that I cannot undo: I've tried giving treats when, after I tell her to get down and sit, I give her the treat, but she figured out that she gets more treats if she quickly jumps up and sit directly afterwards. Then I tried, telling her to get off and sit, and I'll wait until she is calm before I reward her with a head scratch, the end result is still the same. She uses techniques to work around the 'problem' and to manipulate. Yeah, she can also open doors and fridges. She also makes sad, deeply hurt puppy eyes, to work on my emotions to get me to be more lenient. Any advice? Btw, I talk to her, all of my dogs and cats, like I would to a human, and they understand what I say and respond to what I say and full on conversations, not just words. . .
There's an awesome video on Boing. (Not sure of the author or RUclipsr). The woman just wanted to get from where she prepared the food to where the dog got fed without jumping. Took a little while but by praising the Boing and only reinforcing or acknowledging it when she asked for it, it worked and now she has a trick too. Boing - like Tigger the tiger. Also, Susan Garrett's retrieve video is one of the best out there. If you need a more methodical way, check out Training Positive. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the tips in the other video on jumping up. I've been applying your techniques and it's working. She still tries to jump up, but with the voice command, hand signals and body ques, the leg thing, she is learning fast. She now sits, most of the time, when Im around her and she wants attention. She still jumps up when my back is turned. She is something else: she always works her way around what I'm teaching her 😁.
My male Doberman came up with a plan to get me out of the house, if I'm in there for too long: it started about a week ago, he will bark at imaginary things in trees, and I will go out to have a look, and bam, I'm outside, and there is nothing in the tree. He is so proud of himself for figuring that out. They keep amazing me with the plans they concoct to trick me. For a dog to come up with that plan is simply mindboggling. They're not just dumb animals they can think in terms of our behaviour and form full plans, almost alike humans. If that makes sense

Thanks. Very good video. If not trained and left to their own devices, they will be destructive and can be quite dangerous. Go ahead and read that sentence again. I’ll just add that training and consistency should start the day they set foot (or their not so little puppy paws) into your home. This also applies to a rescued dog. Let the routine and consistency begin immediately. With rescued dogs, it might be h logic to have a professional trainer help. They are never too young to begin. Their primary focus is you (and food when they’re puppies), use that to your advantage. I think you showed this, but didn’t mention that their food is not something to guard. They need to earn it and it can be taken away at any time. Resource guarding is dangerous and can be extremely dangerous if you have young kids in the house. Best dogs ever! I wouldn’t have anything else, but I recognize that Dobermans aren’t for everyone. Had them since the 70’s. Yeah, I’m old.

New Doberman owner and I fail at leash walking! I have tried to teach heel position and for her not to pull a million times. We can walk around inside but forget it if we are outside. From what I understand is this probably means Millie does not know what I want her to do! So lost and confused. I would love to take her on walks. We settle for staying in the backyard. Which granted we live on 3 acres but I would love to take her to my job, Petco and other places. I just can’t depend that she won’t pull me off my feet! Also, she loves to jump on people when we are in public. At home, we all turned our back and didn’t acknowledge her while jumping and she knows if she wants to see anyone who comes through the door, it’s all 4 on the floor. Very consistent with it. So discouraged with my ability to train/lead. Millie is so loving and happy. I would love to give her bigger experiences. Right now, we only go to my office when no one is there, walk downtown when it isn’t busy, go to Petco when it first opens etc. anything to avoid lots of people. 😢

Love Joel Beckman's Rottweiler named Creed video for the foundation video for loose leash walking and reactivity. You're not going anywhere unless they're on your page. Quick 5 minute game of retrieve before a walk helps take the edge off. Put in the work up front and you never have to worry after. Like back and forth in the driveway until taking a step off the driveway. They earn their way to the next part of the walk. Kikopup and go say hi - especially for working dogs rather than people coming into the dog's space. Also, great video by McCann and instructor Carol with a field Spaniel named Cheerio. We use this in classes too. The empty dish is across the room. You're just doing about turns until you can get to the dish on a loose leash. The dish represents anything the dog wants - people, dogs, cats etc. Hope that helps.
@@robinrutherfordcost4748 Will look into these. I think I have watched every video and technique! At least it feels that way. Tried to get a local trainer and they kept putting me off..back issues. Kinda sketchy situation. So no one local to try to get an outside view of what I’m doing wrong. Definitely a lot easier training my pug!! 😂 I figure if this is the worst problem she has it is something we can definitely fix. It’s been so hot here Millie can really only handle being outside for 30min or less. Hoping these extreme heat advisories end soon!

If I didn't use a prong collar on my 85 lb. European male I would be on the ground. As a 70 yr old small female, can't afford to be dragged to the ground. Works beautifully. Look up prong collar use, so you use it correctly. I think you will be amazed. Good luck.

Sir, today i saw a mature (2-3 years age, i guess) stray doberman at my locality..he was so agrgressive but i couldn't resist and brought him to my farm.. after spending few hours he now relaxes near me but he is still too aggressive to everyone else. Moreover he don't understand any of my commands.. How can i train him. I want to keep him but he is actually trying to bite my mom, wife and everyone else.. I confused.. plz help..😢

@@DobermanPlanet Main reason I made the comment is that you emphasized it as a point, and other dogs will note a routine and will remind their human; so one would figure the impulse to use an established routine would be stronger for your doberman breed.
