I've been exclusively e6 in those positions. Trying to maintain my hippo set up. Thanks for letting me know it's wrong. I waste a lot of tempo sometimes trying to force a hippo no matter what.
Ya for sure! Glad to help! Ya the Hippo is strong, but there's times we can leave the Hippo - and that's OKAY! In this case, black is simply better, and I'll take it.
Thanks for the video to show me when to go for attacking chess over the hippo setup. I have gone against the hippo defense a few times and they seem to struggle when I send e d and f down the board looking to have f takes g6
Since you're asking for suggestions, I'd love to see a "pause the video" video with a BUNCH of two-, three-, and four-pawn center positions where you ask us to pause the video and determine which of the opponent's pawns are weak and which of the four attacking options is most appropriate. Then we unpause and hear your solution. Sort of a "Hippo Puzzles" video. No need to go beyond about move 15 or so...the purpose of the video would be to reinforce our understanding of the correct strategy and first strike move to play when transitioning into the middlegame. Thanks.
@@TheChessGiant on that same note, I was thinking a set of Hippo positional, strategic and tactical puzzles (opening and middlegame) would be extremely valuable and something that I'd purchase.
thankyou so much ! after playing hundreds of hippos over many years i was always afraid of 1.e4 and 2.d4 so i played 1.....d6 and 2....e6 to stop any nonsense i was not familiar with . but this looks really good and adds some more various positions to the hippo . please ! i beg of you please do a video on d5 ! you da man !
Very interesting! It's good to remember that Solomon is the opening expert guy( I used to think it was called Chess Giant because he slams out so many different opening videos XD)!
Hahaha - thank you Mike appreciate you man. And ya chess opening theory is fascinating. Still learning new opening names that I didn't even know existed lol.
I wanna see one where Hippo moves a central Pawn instead of immediately fianchettoing before the e5/d5 push! 1.e4 e6 2.d4 g6 3. e5 or 1.d4 g6 2. e4 e6 3. e5 or 1.e4 d6 2. d4 g6 3. d4 I've been playing 100% of my Hippo games starting with e6/d6 right away (or e3/d3 as White) to guarantee I can control how the center opens or closes, and the next priority is fianchettos, and it's because I kept running into lines like these above. But I never really played it the in move order from the video, immediately fianchetto before pushing a center Pawn? lil weird to me lol Very very rarely this does result in me not being able to fianchetto, but still tends to give a good position, similar to a hypermodern or something like that.
@@TheChessGiant I'd be happy to share a few of my games if you want some examples. I've just always found it very annoying if opponent gets to push a 5th rank e or d Pawn before I have both of mine pushed.
I've been waiting for this part for a long time. Thank you....... I think this situation is difficult for me as a player.. please try f you can go deep with this version d5 and more
I hear what you're saying, but part of the Hippo is knowing when to leave it - this is one of those moments where we can get a clear advantage, and I recommend black do so in this line!
@@TheChessGiant - Thank you for the explanation. I have been using only the Hippo for awhile now, and after analyzing some losses it was clear that there are times when you get an advantage by going away from the normal lines. I appreciate you taking time to reply, and wish you happy hippo-ing. Lol. It's a very solid opening.
You got it! And ya sometimes going away from the normal lines is the way to go. However, at least in my games, I get the full hippo 90%+ of the time. Keep it up.
As a suggestion, I think it’s worth just mentioning that the hippo is part of the modern defense (usually how it’s reached). Not really huge, but I believe that nomenclature is important and it also helps steer away from always doing e6 b6 in addition to g6 d6 in positions where it’s necessary to
Great thoughts here! Thanks for sharing. I plan to make a Modern Defense video/or Modern Defense series, and I will include this! Maybe I will include it in Hippopotamus content too. Thanks again, Solomon WIshing you a great 2024!
Hippo theory is a instant watch, more theory videos are NEEDED
YESSIR! Glad you are liking the Hippopotamus Defense theory videos!
Loving this analytical content! Of course we wanna see the d5 push. You've already shown the white def pawn push. Maybe a vid when white pushes cde?
Good thoughts!! All things the Hippo player should be prepared for. Thanks.

Totally! Ya most Hippo players don't know how to properly defend these types of positions.

Great video, thanks! These are the sort of videos I keep rewatching as I explore this opening in my own games.
Thanks for tuning in! And ya totally, repitition is HUGE when getting better at chess, openings included!
another great video with cool timing, thank you
Thanks Dwight, and you got it!
Awesome explanation! Please do a version where the opponent pushes the other pawn! Please!!
Thanks Joshua! And I got you! Video on that coming soon!
Having a video for the early D5 push should complement this one nicely, so I'm all for it! 💪🏿🦛
It never hurts to reinforce key Hippo ideas!
Yessir! I plan for this (how to play against d5) to be the next Hippo Defense theory video!
Good call for this video
Happen to me twice last month. Please make a D5 video!
Yessir yessir! Glad you liked it. As Hippo players we gotta be prepared for stuff like this!
Great Video, very logical explanation. Please proceed with D5 option.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it my guy. And thanks for letting me know you want to see d5!
I am waiting for hippopotamus video

Yessir thanks for sending this in Michael!

Excellent advice. :-)

Great thoughts and ideas here! I may want to look at some different move orders and how they all have pros/cons against white's setups.

Fasho!!
Pirc defense is way better tbh
WHAT. Nah the Pirc is strong, but I like the Hippo more personally. But then you got Robert Ramirez who hit 2200 ELO with it, so both work!
