Dec 6 is actually celebrated by the Gullah community in Savannah, GA. Take a trip down there and support them! They are a dying community and need the support.
Is this fairly new? I lived in Savannah for three years in the late 80's - the early '90s and I never heard anything about the celebration; St. Patrick's Day was the big celebration for the city.
I have researched for sometime the rich culture! IT is unfortunate my family in Savannah and Charleston, never mentioned celebrating greatness in either places :-( Thanks
This is the way I learned it from my white, advanced u.s. history teacher in 8th grade. Needless to say it wasn't in the book but he shared it anyway. His entire class incorporated black history into American history because he said one wasn't, without the other. As a kid I liked his stories and that he taught more than our book. As an adult I appreciate it so much more because he was surely bucking the system. Thanks Mr. Richardson!
Wow!! A hero! Thank you Mr Richardson!! I wish we had more like him, because most of us didn’t have that gift of “Truth” of our history in school and sadly there are both Blacks and wytes that DO NOT want the truth told. I’m hoping that in years to come there will be Black Scholars writing school history books because, if not, the lies will continue to be told and that’s okay with some people.😩😡
Knowledge is power and this is the one thing that many people did not understand. When Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation it was created as a threat to bring those confederate states back to the union and he was never truly wanting to end slavery. Thank you shining a light towards knowledge.
THANK YOU!!! EXACTLY 💯!!! He wrote a letter to a confederate general stating that if he could end the war without freeing 1 slave then he would... Lincoln wasn't for us as black people...
That isn't true at all. By the time the Proclamation was issued, abolitionist sentiment in the North had reached a point (due to the death toll of the war) that they were ready to do ANYTHING to break the South once and for all. There was NO POSSIBLE WAY the South was going to rejoin the Union by that time. Lincoln's speeches demonstrate that Lincoln abhorred slavery, wanted it to end, but the Executive Branch was powerless (in the states but not the territories) because of the pro-slave Constitution.
@@Rhythmicons Abraham Lincoln to Horace Greeley Washington, August 22, 1862. DEAR SIR: I have just read yours of the 19th, addressed to myself through the New York Tribune. If there be in it any statements, or assumptions of fact, which I may know to be erroneous, I do not now and here controvert them. If there be in it any inferences which I may believe to be falsely drawn, I do not now and here argue against them. If there be perceptible in it an impatient and dictatorial tone, I waive it in deference to an old friend whose heart I have always supposed to be right. As to the policy I “seem to be pursuing,” as you say, I have not meant to leave any one in doubt. I would save the Union. I would save it the shortest way under the Constitution. The sooner the national authority can be restored the nearer the Union will be “the Union as it was.” If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time save slavery, I do not agree with them. If there be those who would not save the Union unless they could at the same time destroy slavery, I do not agree with them. My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would also do that. What I do about slavery and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save thise Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause. I shall try to correct errors when shown to be errors; and I shall adopt new views so fast as they shall appear to be true views. I have here stated my purpose according to my view of official duty; and I intend no modification of my oft-expressed personal wish that all men every where could be free. Yours, A. LINCOLN.
@@Rhythmicons Lincoln CLEARLY stated that he would save the union if he didn't have to free any slaves... Bottom line, HE WASN'T TRYING TO FREE THEM NOR DID HE CARE TO!!!
@@courtneybryant04 That was actually to Hoarce Greely (abolitionist and newspaper publisher), and when he wrote that letter he already had the draft of the Emancipation Proclamation sitting in his drawer (google the dates). *In that letter he wrote that if he could win the war by freeing none, all, or some, he would do so.* The intent behind that letter, which he knew would be published and widely read, was to prepare the public for the end of slavery. Make sure you read the whole thing and not just cherry pick a partial quote before you jump to a conclusion. Frederick Douglass as well as some of the black men who fought for the Union left a remarkable impression on Lincoln. Read his final speech and see what John Wilkes Booth shot him over. (Spoiler alert: It was citizenship and suffrage for former slaves.) Say what you will about Lincoln because of some of his earlier racist quotes, but you can't say that he didn't care.
I’m born and raised in Galveston Texas and this brother is most definitely right and exact. There are so many inaccurate things about June 19th it’s crazy
I've always wondered about that just from the couple of things that I caught but then I just assume that Juneteenth was a day of recognition for all those slaves who were freed no matter the day or even if they purchase their freedom I thought the day to be a day of recognition not accuracy
@@datdamncjI agree with you. We aren't talking about inaccuracy when it comes to the 4th of July. We celebrate 4th of July but the Ameri-Brits decided to cancel Black slaves Emancipation. I just don't understand us sometimes. We fight and fight. Then, when we get it, somebody thinks it's solely a White agenda. When in fact, Activist Opal Lee fought long and hard to make June 17, 2021 to happen. After Opal's home was burned down by 500 White rioters on Juneteenth 1939 at 12yo, she wanted Juneteenth to be known nationally as a day we celebrate our freedom and not just a festival Black had. When Biden signed the Juneteenth bill, Opal Lee was right by his side.
Well, if he's a historian, he needs to read more. Rather it was August Monday Scorpio Season, the Summer Solstice who gives af. I didn't like how he was trying to undermine Juneteenth. I bet he celebrates 4th of July with no problem and no questions asked. Because the Ameri-Brits (US) Independence Day wasn't actually on July 4, 1776. Black people long ago declared Juneteenth a day of celebration. Y'all celebrate Cinco de Mayo and that event didn't happen on May 5th. So, leave Juneteenth alone and honor Activist Opal Lee for making Juneteenth a national holiday possible. We gotta do better. We should be weaponizing Juneteenth as the reason we should get our Reparations. Because previous recipients of Reparations were considered free. Let's get it together.
@@imaniperry1974 So Perry I didn't know that Cinco de Maya was really on July 4. So that means that me & my friends got drunk on the wrong day! Perry I will never drink again!
@terrytari1891 What! Lol. I never stated Cinco de Mayo was really on the 4th of July. But people do believe Cinco De Mayo was Mexico's Independence Day, which is really on September 16th. Hence, the reason Mexican Americans start their Hispanic Heritage Month on September 16th.
Dr Gerald Horne is an author of 30 books that few knew until Abby Martin brought him on her Empire Files, and as interested as I am about black history, I hadn't heard of him(my Mentor was a black man, and Nathan Martin was a most caring and smartest man I know). He saved my life literally, as I worked with his crew, he was Supv, and for a black contractor with a white accountant, and me as the only whites willing to work for a black man. Nathan knew how depressed I was over the realisation the so many Southern people whose racist attitudes denied their 'lowering' themselves to work for black people. I was brought up in foster and orphanages, none were black kids, yet I heard the n-word all the time and hated it, and was often in arguments against the disrespectfulness of those who used it so. My coworkers were suspicious of me, even later referring to me as The Great White Hope,( a movie on during those times in the 1970s), but more than once they stood up for me, saying, 'Leave'm alone, he's just an N , same as the rest of us here.' And honestly, I felt so honored, since it was soon realised I was unlike most white people they came across. Nathan helped us all out in some way or another, cooking chicken bog for lunch now and then. He saved my life, telling me, we need brothers like you to help bring us together, and again, I swelled with pride over what I felt as love, unneeded but it did feel good. Where my own parents neglected me, here I was accepted, without trying. I loved those guys, Patch, Leon, Eggy, Jesse James Bonaparte, well, everyone.

But why would it take the Declaration of Juneteenth for anyone to start giving history lessons? The Teenth has been unofficially celebrated for years no one has tried to discredit it's significance until the whites acknowledge. Now if that ain't rebellious slave mentality I don't know what is. In Joy Degruy's Post Traumatic Slave Disorder she recounts her visit to South Africa where the difference between Apartheid and slavery in America is that those white ppl acknowledge their wrongdoing. This is indeed just that forget the date. Blame us for what went down on what date no blame yourself for not bringing this to the forefront every year on Dec. 6. We hollered Juneteenth and we got recognized. Why weren't we celebrating Dec 6🤔 Cats like this wanna appeal to, once again, the hereditary anger of our nature of being enslaved and being killed with no justification even to this day but will fire up that grill on the 4th or put a Christmas tree up to celebrate white jesus. @@antoniosmith4362 I have been teaching this lesson and so many more since the early 1990s. "No one" "All" are very dangerous words. Please, allow me to stress this point again: I LOVE & RESPECT Juneteenth. Why? Because I love everyday our Ancestors were freed from the inhumanity of chattel slavery. My issue is two fold: 1) If a date is to be designated a Federal Holiday to recognize the end of America's Original Sin, then why chose the date on which America abolished slavery, December 6, 1865. 2) 225,000+ of our Ancestors were still enslaved after June 19, 1865. When I heard it was a new federal holiday for the ablolishment I honestly didnt care even as the black man I am when I realized what it really meant. I hope this holiday gets moved to the date that slavery ended in the USA instead of the Confederate states
@Ade Ayodele He shouldn't be upset. For what? Nobody is telling you not to celebrate Juneteenth. He is saying know the TRUTH about it as you celebrate. I mean it would be ignorant to celebrate something that you can't even explain the historical significance of. Wouldn't it?
Thank you Carl Mack for bringing the truth about our history to us. None of this was taught to us in school. I am 73yrs old and I am often brought to tears by the things that I am learning; information that was hidden or not taught to us about our ancestors and our history.

Where the slave actually free? Or did the slave patrol came into existence putting the ex-slaves in prison to continue receiving free labor. There is a book and a movie called: “Slavery by Another Name”
Everyone has been taught that enslaved Texans were the last American Africans to be freed from slavery. It’s time to research December 6, 1865. Thanks for the information, Mr. Mack.
Everyone hasn't been taught that, I never heard of Juneteenth until a few years ago. It's not something that was taught or celebrated in Alabama where I'm from.

Correct Juneteenth was and is a Texas Celebration. Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves in states that rebelled against the Union, those at war against the United States.
I honestly think one of the reasons Juneteenth became a national holiday is because June was one of the few months that didn't have a major holiday that businesses could sell branded merchandise for. Both Juneteenth and "Pride" have now filled that spot. If you went shopping during the month of June this year, you saw massive amounts of "merch" for both. I can't wait to see what highly-marketable holiday we're going to start celebrating in either August or September... (It just can't interfere with "back to school" sales numbers, of course.)
Again White folks profiting off of Black culture! Incidentally, if our ancestors were never enslaved in the first place, the descendants of colonizers would not still be benefitting from slavery.I would not buy any Juneteenth merchandise from any department stores or off Amazon and Temu which are not Black-owned.

It was an important battle, not the whole war at all, like D-Day which didn't mean at all the defeat of Nazism but gave hope to all Europe and was remembered by most as Liberation day.
You are correct. The 13th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified by Georgia on December 6, 1865, but it was not certified as being in effect until December 18. That was the actual date that Kentucky and Delaware became free states. Nevertheless, slavery remained in Indian Territory (now part of Oklahoma), as a number of tribes there had adopted slavery from the Southern states where they used to live. Many of the tribes signed treaties with the Confederacy and fought on its side. After the Civil War ended, they were told that all treaties with the Union were rescinded, and they had to sign "Reconstruction Treaties" in 1866 (on various dates) which prohibited slavery.
As far as I'm concerned, I'd rather have a hate crime bill for African Americans, instead of another holiday or reparations. Feel free to disagree 😌, but this "holiday" is just a distraction.
Non-black subscriber here. I actually grew up in TX when Juneteenth was a state holiday and was confused when we moved to another state that didn't celebrate it. It was never explained why it was a holiday. This was a fantastic episode. I agree with Roland: there needed to be *a day* somewhere on the calendar to celebrate and now we can put this asterisk on it to help ppl understand it still left behind some 225,000 Americans. I hope we get an Election Day holiday next.

End of chattel slavery, but not the end of slavery. We still have people in prison who are basically slaves, according to the 13th amendment, regardless of guilt
June may not be the correct month for the freeing of all slaves, but it is a starting point for an extended conversation about slavery. I am 68 years old and black. I know about slavery; I know about continued racism, but I want to know more about my history other than knowing my ancestor was a slave. Black people has gone through so much to get to this mediocre place in our society . This Juneteenth holiday is not enough to memorialize the suffering . No people in modern history can equal the hardships, hate , attempted genocide(?), enslavement and the list can go on . All the evil spirited things you can imagine has been done to our people here in America from the time of enslavement to even this present day . How can we be compensated for the pain , suffering , psychological impact and the loss of growth as a people etc. ? We must demand for more than Juneteenth .

We here in Texas are happy to share this Texas holiday as a Federal holiday. I am grateful that we are increasingly differentiating between the packaged and biased history we were taught in primary and secondary education from actual history. Personally, the more I learn the more empowered I am. I love how we share the truth of history in our community.
Juneteenth is all well and good, but what about voting rights, reparations, equal access to quality education and health care? What about economic apartheid?
Why would they give u anything when you don't were you came from or who you are or where you came from. We let ppl come here and tell you who you are and where you come from. And tell you how you got here. Give you mythical ppl to praise created by congress like Harriet tubman , Fredrick Douglas. Why we the perfect puppet.
We need more Historians like Carl Mack to come together and correct African history in our history books and the education system. Why are we allowing incorrect history to be taught or omitted from schools?

My grandmother is in her 80's from Missouri. Her and my grandfather have celebrated juneteenth my whole life every year and before I came along. Im almost 50.She did a lot of boycotting and equality protest in the 60's.
Does anyone remember that Juneteenth originated as a result of slaves in Texas hearing the news of their freedom over the week of June 13-19th, thus Juneteenth stands for June 13-19th? This oral history was passed down through our family in East Texas.
When I heard it growing up they said Slaves got free sometime between June 13-19 as word spread State to State Plantation to Plantation they found out that President Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation
That was the entire point of this interview. June 19th 1865 was the date in Texas, but *DEC 6* was the date in 1865 when Chattel Slavery ended in the entire US...the Confederacy was a separate Country until they lost the war and rejoined the Union.
Let's make sure we have accuracy in ALL aspects of African-American history (ourstory) in this country. Don't pick and choose. Thank you Carl Mack for bringing these facts to the forefront. I just want to see Mr. Mack and others continue to provide accuracy to all matters.
Hey Mr Martin great piece. There was a great deal of information here. I was already familiar with the majority of this and hence my problem with 19June as well. I like how you guys were able to go back and forth and your acquiescence to make the point that it’s Māori important to get the day in the points and then continuing to use it to educate others. If we waited to “agree on one day” that would have been used as an excuse to not give us one…… this goes against to show why we need to continually educate each other. A month is not enough. Thank you both..
@@SandraMartinez-gv1yf Agreed @ December 6 being the National Holiday. Still sad not all states had ratified the 13th amendment until late in the game though.
The 13th Amendment needs to be re-ratified as it never truly abolished Slavery...since prisoners are supposedly duly convicted...they (according to the 13th) are legally Slaves and who the Hell does that affect the most?🤔🤔🤔...Damn America 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸...you just can't help it can you?👿👿👿
We celebrate the 4th of July 1776 when we declared Independence, but we didn't ratify the Constitution until June 21, 1788, so America wasn't really a free independent nation until then. But that doesn't keep us from saying our country is 244 years old when it's actually 222, we don't even get our white history right 😂 I'm thankful for your guest making me aware of the truth, that's why I come here
The difference is Americans had de-facto control after 1776 but several states still had slaves after June 19th 1865. America became independent in 1776 once it defeated the British. Ratification of the constitution was an internal american issue.
What about the slaves in Indian territories everyone seems to forget about which carried on for around 2yrs after Juneteenth? BLM have mattered since the civil war. Slavery & the slave trade was denounced at the founding of our country by George Washington then again in 1834 when we assisted Brittain in the slavery abolition act. Our 12th president John Adams never owned a slave & is quoted "the American revolution will not be complete until slaves were freed". Thomas pain considered a founding father along with other liberals founded a society for the relief of free negros in 1775. On may 30th 1868 General John A Logan decreed that this day should be in remembrance of the more than 620,000 soldered killed in civil war. So let's keep it real & in context.. the very founding of this country was founded on individual freedom in a time where the enslavement of others was practiced around the globe. Great things take time just like learning to walk.. I'm proud of my country the freest country in the world a beacon of hope for others. America's independence is independence for all Americans.

I do not see the insult that he refers for 150 years after the fact. I do see the lack of thinking expressed by the "We've been taught...," default that ignores emotional maturity as it removes the personal adult responsibility that demands one's own thinking and research, over a 150 year period, in a land that during most of that time had readily accessible public libraries and online resources for nearly 3 decades. It is ridiculously irresponsible and foolish to expect the colonizing oppressor to educate the oppressed. It can only lead to being constantly and consistently "Out- thunk."
The Gullah have a big parade celebrating their culture in October or November, look it up! Can’t wait to go one Sweet Day! 💖
The Gullah community definitely should be supported and not allowed to die out because of outside forces.
There’s a festival in Beaufort SC. Rich Gullah history where I’m from.

@@Rhythmicons Abraham Lincoln to Horace Greeley
Washington, August 22, 1862.
Yours,

Juneteenth has always been celebrated in the black community longtime before it became a national holiday.
Exactly and few if any black Americans question why that day and not the actual day of the Emancipation Proclamation.

I agree with Roland: there needed to be *a day* somewhere on the calendar to celebrate and now we can put this asterisk on it to help ppl understand it still left behind some 225,000 Americans. I hope we get an Election Day holiday next.
Hopefully, no black folks have to die for them to make Election Day a damn holiday. Kudos.

I don’t know where this statement came from that Juneteenth was when the last enslaved people was set free. We black Texans said our ancestors in Texas was freed on Juneteenth. I love my people all over country and world.
In KY it was always celebrated in August 8th. Slaves in KY didn't know until December of 1865. I'm just glad somebody is talking about blacks in KY.
Additionally, I believe, that Dec 6th should ALSO be declared a Federal Holiday......& the TRUTH, should be a Federal requirement, in ALL AMERICAN SCHOOLS.....PERIOD! 🧐
And what in the hell will a holiday do for black people? How does that lift us up or stop the atrocities being put on us as a people? Miss me with all this symbolic nonsense
Blacks were still enslaved on Native American territory in Oklahoma until around 1867

How can we be compensated for the pain , suffering , psychological impact and the loss of growth as a people etc. ? We must demand for more than Juneteenth .

That was the entire point of this interview. June 19th 1865 was the date in Texas, but *DEC 6* was the date in 1865 when Chattel Slavery ended in the entire US...the Confederacy was a separate Country until they lost the war and rejoined the Union.

We celebrate the 4th of July 1776 when we declared Independence, but we didn't ratify the Constitution until June 21, 1788, so America wasn't really a free independent nation until then. But that doesn't keep us from saying our country is 244 years old when it's actually 222, we don't even get our white history right 😂
I'm thankful for your guest making me aware of the truth, that's why I come here
The difference is Americans had de-facto control after 1776 but several states still had slaves after June 19th 1865.
This is America, everything we celebrate is mythical. Jesus was born in April, not December.

@@chaserofthelight484 kind off, Dec 25 is actually the Winter solstic which the christians stole, Easter is actually the Spring Solstic or Estricse

@@petermeichan3160 most northern cultures recognized the middle of winter in some way and held a festival. Western European tradition is closely linked to the Scandinavian Yule festival and the German tradition of tree-worship. Yule is celebrated at the Winter Solstice, on or about 21/22 of December. The Romans celebration of the Invincible Sun was held about the same time. The variation occurred because the ancient Romans didn’t use the Georgian calandra. December 25 was the birthday of Mithra, a Pagan Persian god worshiped in the religion Mithraism. They were a very popular cult.
Regardless, it’s a step in the right direction in recognizing slavery in the U.S.
