someone once told me if you strain it'll sound like the highest note you can reach but if you support it'll sound like you still have room to go up even if you don't. you can really tell that difference here. i also notice the straining notes tend to sound a little more closed off, like their throat is sealed shut.
Meg Shankar EXACTLY. Belting a high note should feel like you can still go higher. That's one sensation as a singer to watch out for. It's also a very good mantra when someone is starting training their voices.
Interestingly, in this list the same girls often appear in both categories, meaning people shouldn't judge too harshly by just hearing one performance. Everyone's voices have ups and downs :)
it shows inconsistency, like yuju, or just when their supported range ends, like solar, solji, and uji, they do great in the middle notes but not so much with the higher notes
I'm very impressed with Apink Eunji. She's so relaxed with those high notes and always use support technique.. I would love to see her collab with Taeyeon, Ailee, Rose, Jihyo and Hwasa. All my favourite vocalists.. :D
I don't know shit about singing but this was so fucking cool. I mean I don't really know what strained or support technically mean when it comes to this stuff, but the supported singing sounded so great
Chloe A When I sing I strain a lot, but when I use support I can't hit the notes like I could when I strain. I have a limited range with support so idk how to go over this hump :( I just sing recreationally and for some extra cash on the side to help my family out, so I don't have access to a vocal trainer. Do you know anything about solving this issue?
It's basically Stability (Support) vs Mobility (Strain). Singers strains to reach a note outside their range. Or also because they are not using proper breathing technique.
To strain is to force the note to come out- it comes from the throat, and is damaging to the vocal cords. There is no real air in it. To support is to sing from the gut, meaning that you're using your diaphragm to push the notes out. It's much more natural and is less likely to hurt your vocal cords. It's called support because there's proper air support behind the notes. Those who strain have been trained to just reach the note in whatever way they can. They haven't received proper training. They haven't been taught how singing works inside the body, they're just told to make it sound good. Those who support have be trained very properly and have been taught how singing works inside your body, not just how it sounds. Straining makes notes sound pitchy and out of tune sometimes. Those who strain generally sound younger, even if they aren't young in age. Support is much more powerful, and you usually hear more vibrato in it. Those who use support sound much more mature.
Here you can really see SM's great quality training impact by how every SM artist that was shown is in the "Support" category. Many people easily discredit SM for only prioritizing visual appearances and/or dancing talent but it's always been clear that the company puts so much more effort into training their artists to vocalize with proper technique so they sing with more quality and professionally. Heckn, even Tiffany who is often the target of being a weak vocalist is shown here singing "Support" technique.
i only saw Tiffany in Strain category. The only other member i saw was Taeyeon in Support category 3x. When did you see Support Tiffany? edit: oh nevermind it was support

Nobu Especially seeing the crazy improvement of their artist like taemin and Luna over the years. They have so many great vocalist at SM, too many to count lol
Nobu also if you look to older groups like SuJu and SNSD almost all the members learned how to proper sing live after some years of career, even the dance line, do not like the company but I give this credit to them
thank god for this video - I'm so sick of some idols being lauded as fabulous singers when their strain gives me anxiety. It's so bad for their voices!! Good technique is part of being a musician
Helena Wang ok but there are different types of "fabulous" singers. Obviously i dont think they should damage themselves, but they dont only qualify as "fabulous" if their technique is perfect 100% of the time. To those who dont study about singing, a lot of the time you dont even notice the technical errors and you just like the tone/emotion of the voice, the melody, the manipulation, or you're impressed by the note/length,strength etc
that's true, but good technique never impedes a performance. Of course the ability to entertain is also really important, and a performance with pure technique and no excitement isn't worth anything, but I'm speaking as a musician that knows a little (not a lot) about singing and I can say for a fact that it stresses me out listening to performers sing without good technique. It's not that it makes me enjoy the music less, I really just worry for their voices... technique breeds longevity, and I worry about those who don't have it because their voices won't last their career! Also just as a person, there are so many average singers that people think are amazing that I just don't understand. There are quite a few kpop singers who truly have a gift and yet there are those that are praised who barely measure up. It's the hype that really frustrates me. It's demonstrative of a misinformed audience and probably a really stressed out idol.
@@omgarmyonces3585 Not necessarily, sometimes it's just about having good connections. Of course, a lot of idols work hard to get where they're at, but a lot are not taught to properly support their vocals which leads to straining.
Sometimes, but people straining could be engaging their diaphragm, but also using other extrinsic muscles in the throat or elsewhere in the body to aid in the sound.
@@thunderstorm__8147 exactly. So many people try to couple support as being a sound free from tension with diaphragm support. All support is is engagement of the diaphragm while singing. Xxxsorrow Where did you get the idea of BlackPink being good vocalists from? the only vocalist in the group is Rose and she's even worse than Jihyo who is an average vocalist.
Beside So Hyang (of course, she is the ultimate goddess of vocal), Ailee and Son Seungyeon really had me shook! Their resonance and support were really in place and consistent! These 3 are my picks for Korean vocal trinity! What’s your pick?
For me, Lee young hyun. She is the only one who can support up to G5 and G#5 in Korea except Sohyang. What's more, her emotion is really awesome. I'm sorry I can't write this word in English -> 처절함. She can sing a variety of high notes as well as wide genre range.

off-kilter I'm aware but some of the vocalists who strained, are able to support as well, there's just moments where they are straining to release the note (not trying to justify that it's right). I know it's not good for the vocalists, in the long term.
7:24 she's the best vocalist from a girl group in the history of kpop. please play attention to lina y'all she's from a group called 'the grace (csjh)' and they are under SM and have been on hiatus for like a decade but they are the best vocal group in korea. it's a shame sm didn't invest in them really
Chaelee lin but beyonce has better technique considering her mezzo testitura she has better lows and mids and beautiful runs beyonce is beyonce ailee is ailee
I find Ailee to be in the top two for me vocally [FEMALE} in Korea however, she is not able to reach Beyonce's lower register. Also, as long as the songs don't have Beyonce's riffs and runs, it would be a great duet. She can't do those either.
Please add resonance, you could mark "resonance" with gold or green font, and I hope you explain in the beginning of your video about what is strain, support, and resonance. So all of the KPOP fans would know more about their biases vocal technique. And if you don't mind give (X) beside "strain", (check) beside support, and (star) beside resonance. And of course this video is so great, I liked this!
Thank you, I'll definitely take these into consideration when making the next video :) However I don't rly trust my ears to differentiate between support and resonance, nor my knowledge about the subject to give a proper explanation for the terms but I'll definitely see what I can do, since this video was a little lacking in that aspect :)
Resonance I think is the correct placing of voice within the vocal parts in your head. Support is when you correctly breathe and use your diaphragm without putting much force in your vocal cords. Just sharing my knowledge about singing 😊
Son Seungyeon supports up to F#5 Ailee supports up to F5 with one G5 Lee Hyeri supports up to F5 Yeonji supports up to Eb5 Hyorin *supported* up to F#5 but she regressed down to D5 *SOHYANG SUPPORTA UP TO C#6*

+EXIDek For male strain can you add that part in seventeens very nice where seungkwan does that high note?Even in the official audio it sounds strained..
hehe yeah i probably should've had some definition but i suck at explaining stuff lol.. essentially strain means the singer is relying on tension and closing the throat muscles to produce sound, which is unhealthy and ''bad'' from a technical viewpoint, and often creates the gritty/throaty/closed sound heard in the examples. Whereas support means the singer is utilizing their breath to create a healthy, open supported sound
for me its kinda like strain = sounds like they forgot to breathe properly before singing and support = breathed properly to sing the note in a hearty way idk
Straining occurs too often nowadays. They just teach them to reach the note, not the bells and whistles of how to sing. I haven't been in choir yet but I've learned from many people about this.
I liked this video. A next video suggestion could be falsetto vs strained head voice vs supported head voice because I really appreciate good head voices

What’s wrong with it? She was proud that she was even able to hit it.. of course it wasn’t the correct technique but let the girl be proud of herself..
HAHAHAHAHAHA
too sad that many newly debuting groups are becoming mediocre to weak in terms of vocals especially for the males
I agree. But for girl groups, there's Blackpink and Red Velvet. I think Wendy is one of the best vocalists of this new generation of idols. Her voice is so powerful.
Blackpink does not have good vocals. The only one is Rose, but she strains. Regarding Red Velvet, I don't stan them but I agree wholeheartedly :)
Xxxsorrow blackpink doesnt have good vocals lmao, they have stable vocals, theyre better with the rap and dancing
Xxxsorrow Where did you get the idea of BlackPink being good vocalists from? the only vocalist in the group is Rose and she's even worse than Jihyo who is an average vocalist.
don't forget Mamamoo☺ their vocals are super good tho. even the rapper can sing
After watching this i feel like i'm gonna cringe listening to high notes in kpop
Soloey Solo you will i promise
Ahahahahha I feel like I become an expert 😂😂😂
of course ailee demonstrating support queen of stable vocals
Niamh McGrath what was the song she sang at the beginning?
i believe it's the korean version of one day more from les misérables
Niamh McGrath queen of vocals is so hyang
Naeyons and minas dildo mann sohyang ain't kpop singer
Indeed.
So Hyang supports to infinity and beyond LOL
Beside So Hyang (of course, she is the ultimate goddess of vocal), Ailee and Son Seungyeon really had me shook! Their resonance and support were really in place and consistent! These 3 are my picks for Korean vocal trinity! What’s your pick?
For me, Lee young hyun. She is the only one who can support up to G5 and G#5 in Korea except Sohyang. What's more, her emotion is really awesome. I'm sorry I can't write this word in English -> 처절함. She can sing a variety of high notes as well as wide genre range.
@@flakesnow4234 Lee Younghyun only Consistent support to F#5/G5 but she can support and resonance up to Bb5 at the best!
This video shows that just because singers have their bad singing moments, doesn't mean they CAN'T sing. People should learn
SAMMY JUNG i have no idea what u mean
sfs040 even if there is a moment when a singer strains, it doesn't mean they are entire.h bad at singing.
It is not bad singing moments. It's bad singing. Period. People like you should learn. Like really learn what is the differences between support and strain.
@@resqxe_1422 It do means they don't know how to use good vocal technique to sing. We can also predict all of these strained singing will destroy their vocal if they goes on using the same technique.
off-kilter I'm aware but some of the vocalists who strained, are able to support as well, there's just moments where they are straining to release the note (not trying to justify that it's right). I know it's not good for the vocalists, in the long term.
I'm the part where it shows Yuju straining and then Yuju supported back to back.
the video of luna signing always makes me smile
Z W Sameee
7:24 she's the best vocalist from a girl group in the history of kpop. please play attention to lina y'all she's from a group called 'the grace (csjh)' and they are under SM and have been on hiatus for like a decade but they are the best vocal group in korea. it's a shame sm didn't invest in them really
You need to know Lee Younghyun, vocalist from Big Mama (Gen 1)
@@GuinevereYTactually big mama is 2nd gen. (2003)
@@osamafaisal3716 oh okay thanks for the correction😁
@ np
Of course Davichi, Ailee, Sohyang, Hyorin, and Eunji are the support they are actually goddesses
Hey you forgot Seungyeon and Younghyun
Ailee truly has a voice as beautiful as beyonce's
Ikr
Christina Heart THEY WOULD SLAY US LIKE DAMNNNN
Chaelee lin
but beyonce has better technique considering her mezzo testitura she has better lows and mids and beautiful runs
beyonce is beyonce
ailee is ailee
Beyoncé? I think that's a bit too much, no offence
Thank you, I'll definitely take these into consideration when making the next video :) However I don't rly trust my ears to differentiate between support and resonance, nor my knowledge about the subject to give a proper explanation for the terms but I'll definitely see what I can do, since this video was a little lacking in that aspect :)
what's the difference anyway .__.
Soloey Solo support & resonant is very different. Someone can be supported but not resonant while resonant singing is always supported.
Resonance I think is the correct placing of voice within the vocal parts in your head. Support is when you correctly breathe and use your diaphragm without putting much force in your vocal cords. Just sharing my knowledge about singing 😊
the beast vocalists here are Sohyang, Ailee, Son Seungyeon and Davici's Lee Haeri
you're missing out on eunji
@Eifanya Leykam solji used to strain a lot..but i think after the hiatus she improved a lot
Taeyeon too WTH?
@@gg6040 yes after her comeback in 2018 she is very consistent her C#5 and now she's has some support several peaks D5
B4 is like a easy peasy for Jeong Eunji.
i love how u bring some underrated great vocals
4:48 I can't get over that flawless note, that resonance!!!
luna's high notes give me a quick goosebumps
Its so hurt hearing the strained ones.
Eunji, Luna, Ailee, and Taeyeon 😍
Son Seungyeon supports up to F#5
Ailee supports up to F5 with one G5
Lee Hyeri supports up to F5
Yeonji supports up to Eb5
Hyorin *supported* up to F#5 but she regressed down to D5
*SOHYANG SUPPORTA UP TO C#6*
WHO IS THIS U.JI I GOTTA GO STAN HER RN
Rachelle H. Main vocal from Bestie
Rachelle H. watch all of her solo stages she's so good haha
Rachelle H. Hahahaha same! I'm thinking of looking her up after this vid. Her voice's so nice
Rachelle H. Please support her & BESTie!
where is queen of straining park bom ? and where legendary IU 3 straining high notes ?
omg hahaha
wi rep omg lol. I love bom but it's true. I hope she get treatment and a good vocal teacher
Olivia Wonka its bc she has a condition that fucked up her throat (idk what its called)
crvshn her "condition" is she sang with bad technique & keep damaging her throat over the years
. she is done for
wi rep true
jung eunjii really amaze me
QUEEN TAEYEON AILEE
LUNA SOLJI HYORIN AND EUNJI demonstrating great vocal technique
If a queen is taeyeon and ailee, sohyang must be a god
SO HYANG'S VOCALS ARE NO JOKE
you should do this with male idols too
Yes, a male version is already in progress :)
I hope you include GOT7's YoungJae. Sometimes I think he gets parts that are a bit out of his range and its "strain". But I want confirmation.
HereIStandbyU I might include him - if you're curious about his technique tho, there's a very detailed analysis of it here :) www.google.dk/amp/s/kpopvocalanalysis.net/2016/09/06/got7s-vocal-analysis-youngjae/amp/
+EXIDek For male strain can you add that part in seventeens very nice where seungkwan does that high note?Even in the official audio it sounds strained..
EXIDek i cant wait for male version. i am wondering about got7 youngjae's range strain and support too :)
omg lol i dont understand.. i know nothing about vocals 😂
hehe yeah i probably should've had some definition but i suck at explaining stuff lol.. essentially strain means the singer is relying on tension and closing the throat muscles to produce sound, which is unhealthy and ''bad'' from a technical viewpoint, and often creates the gritty/throaty/closed sound heard in the examples. Whereas support means the singer is utilizing their breath to create a healthy, open supported sound
EXIDek ohh ok now i understand, thank you~
I can guess the meaning, strain or support, but it‘s more clear after your explanation
That makes two of us.
for me its kinda like
strain = sounds like they forgot to breathe properly before singing and support = breathed properly to sing the note in a hearty way idk
Son Seung Yeon, Kim Yeonji, So Hyang, Ailee, and lee Haeri nailed it
YULIYANTO CHANDRA , that's because all of them have a really good technique compared to the other vocalists.
Vocal Goddesses EUNJI, TAEYEON, AILEE 😍
Eunji the Main Vocal eunjiiiii!!!!!!!!
9:17-9:20 I think that was the most pleasing thing I’ve ever heard.
you're so real for this comment, 100% agree
ailee consistently support 💯👌💯👌👌💯💯😃😲👌💯
SoHyang has me crying since I listened to her Arirang performance
best vocals: taeyeon, ailee(most favorite), eunji (my opinion)
Dazzlingfire 97 sohyang
Can we just take a minute to appreciate Luna and Ailee please. 👏🏾👏🏾
Ailee being a vocal queen as usual 👑💁
Sohyang is gonna be a god vocal if Ailee is queen vocal
Straining occurs too often nowadays. They just teach them to reach the note, not the bells and whistles of how to sing. I haven't been in choir yet but I've learned from many people about this.
The holy trinity in my opinion is Ailee, Taeyeon and Eunji
Thanh Nguyen Luna is ranked higher then Taeyeon vocal wise
Thanh Nguyen the Holy Trinity of Korea is Sohyang, ailee and son seungyeon
@@blueorangeade712 luna enji and taeyeon has same ranked of vocal technique
sem nome Lmao you said “Taste” 😔🤘
@@agielleshtt367 nope luna can support to Eb5 while taeyeon starined at that note
I liked this video. A next video suggestion could be falsetto vs strained head voice vs supported head voice because I really appreciate good head voices
Alana O'Brien
if you like good headvoices search so hyang, whitney houston and park ki young thank me later
Ailee Eunji and Taeyeon are just amazing. They make it seem so effortless.
I love how Yuju fought herself, such a queen
SM vocalists are the best👍👍
I love how proud minah is while straining the fck out of that note
Ailee and Sohyang killed it dang
And people call Tiffany bad.....
Queen POTATO it's kinda sad. I mean tiffany is not an amazing singer, but she isn't as horrible as people make her out to be.
A4 shouldn’t be that high of a note for any of these females to support lol
JAYTHESOLDIER JTS yes but hers was even resonant; something a lot of the supported A4s shown in the video weren’t. she really isn’t bad.
She only can support up to Bb4 consistenly, at her best up to B4 compared to taeyeon, jessica and seohyun...she's weak
@@zeff8820 compared to the others, she's weaker. heck even sunny resonates eb5 which is on par with tae's highest.
tiffany is better than many idols. that's a fact even if her technique is average.
So Hyang is on a different level. Nobody can touch her.
Is it weird I like Choas strainy high notes? Like don't get me wrong I know they ain't suppose to sound like that and I usually don't like them but idk why I like hers I'm not even a fan of AoA lol
5:36 my favorite taeyeon high note will remain from baby baby's!
Choa's impact
***** Yeah I get what you mean ailee is amazing, but lol I like Choas High note in Goodluck tho it's strainy af idk it's just a matter of preference :)
I agree, its cuz she lifts her soft palette for this soft edge, makes her sound very unique. Also that last comment was very rude, Choa isn't overrated...
Isaac Steltzer true! And yes I agree choa barely gets love for her voice so idk what that person is even talking about
I think its because she's in the same category as Jihyo yet she still get's treated like one of the great vocalists in fan wars.
Shoulda put in Luna's performance of "Mom" :')
Sheryl Yaseen IKR!?
I could listen to Ailee all day her voice is amazing. God Bless.
8:44 had me cracking up and then that girls face they showed ☠️
Yuju is really pretty good though
AILEE'S VOCALS WERE CLEAN DAMNNNNN
People also seem to forget it’s not like all of these artists strain every time they hit these notes. Most of the time they start straining when they feel they missed a breath and know they can’t get the note in without their voice breaking.
Perfect ending with Sohyang cutting loose.
Perfect example of support, resonance, and consistency.
Shannon slays but people still choose to sleep on her. Her effortles high notes are crazy.
AILEE'S VOICE IS HEAVEN ASSFGHKLLLLL OMG KMG AILEE I LOVE U GURL
ChoA, GaYoon and MinAh are such straining queens, I can't--
Minah's C5 made me laugh.
3:46 she managed to impress a lot of people with this note though haha
KCuber omg... i literally cringed in this part
It sounds pretty autotuned to me, so I can understand why people were actually impressed.
KCuber Agreed I'm a Pristin fan but that's the most overrated Xiyeon moment of all time
The reason people were impressed (me included) was because she's a rapper and rappers have the bad stereotype attached to them that they can't hold a note
Yeah man, I agree. I actually like her cause I think she's well rounded but in like the next episode she was so greedy for main vocal it was hilarious xDD
When done right you should have chills. Aliee and Eunji be given me chills every time.
So Hyang, Yeon Ji, Seungyeon, Ailee, Eunji, Taeyeon daebak....
You forgot Lee Haeri! Support to F#5
so surprised to see Dawon in this video.
Vic Yang yes! She's so underrated.
demi lovato is pure strain
Jas // Jimin Trash I don't think so, she has a good technique
Adriana M. not really.. i mean, she's not awful but she isnt as good as people think she is
Adriana M. you need to see some of the performances I'm talking about....It's pretty well known that she strains a lot. I'm not calling her a bad singer either, she obviously got talent.
I always thought she had a raspy kind of voice
She doesn't have good technique actually, she strains but I still love her voice. Its very powerful and she sings with emotions.
Ailee is truly gifted 😍
Eunji, what a queen
So Hyang Queen of Resonance
Ailee Princess of Resonance 😍🖒
I think no one can beat Sohyang 😂
jaja jay there is ailee is better
MY ANYMELODY No, technically, SoHyang is. SoHyang has better vocals and a wider vocal range, heck she sounds beautiful out in the cold on a winter day (it actually happened). But that's your opinion. I guess some people just dont like to admitt facts.
MY ANYMELODY she isn't better than sohyang but she is the one among female kpop singers who can get close to sohyang
@@myanymelody5675 Sohyang has a much wider range and is easier on the ears. I love Ailee but no, Sohyang has the best vocals.
sohyang is arguably the strongest known soprano out of all countries currently, what a goddess
Luna always looks so happy and just darn adorable every time she sings
sohyang is different level
Eunji. Always remembered in my head as a good support singer, and reply 1997 ♡♡
Ailee Is my life
