  • Fur seals. We all know these circus animals, which can juggle, jump, dance or applaud to the great joy of the audience. With large, tender eyes and a soft fur, they have been trained to entertain and amuse. This was our common vision, up to now…
Far from amusement parks, in the big frozen ocean surrounding Antarctica, the fur seal presents a very different face from that of the playful creature. This groundbreaking one-hour special unveils the dark side of this mysterious predator.
Half way between a tale and an investigation, this film follows the destiny of a young male fur seal, who has taken refuge on a remote volcanic island of the Southern Seas. An animal that kills more than it apparently needs to survive. No palm trees, no trainer or turquoise pools are to be seen here. Instead, he lives in a hostile world where the rules of survival are mastered through a strict learning process.
All through the seal’s coming of age, the self-taught animal moves through different stages that will in turn enable him to produce offspring: after a birth on land, the seal leaves for the high seas, endures storms, and above all, learns. He learns to hunt, to fight, to become an opportunistic predator but also to share the dusky dolphins’ experience or to escape the killer whale’s jaws.
Context: This film has involved very dedicated film crews in extreme situations: it was shot over a 6 year period in the remote Prince Edward Islands, in the utterly difficult open ocean of the so-called Roaring Forties and offshore Patagonia. It delivers both a comprehensive biography of a popular animal and a very modern approach to natural history. This film associates an unusual soundtrack with Rap songs to more classical blue chip behaviour, most of which has never been seen before.

Animals are not here for our entertainment. All living creatures deserve a life free from captivity and exploitation.

TURN ON CAPTIONS!! They obviously did a voiceover the original. The original captions are gnarly! Nothing like the vanilla voiceovers we're hearing. Gives a much better, and far more colorful description of the video.

This is a first for me. I knew leopard seals had this trate. So this is the first time of seeing something like this from the 'lovable' fur seals. Usually they are the prey for the Orca. The moral of the story, we learn something new everyday.

No animals belong in captivity doing tricks for human's entertainment. Free all the animals and leave them alone, they are not ours to commodify and profit from.

There are many species of fur seals. Some live in warmer waters. Like the Guadalupe fur seals. Most captive animals are Californian sea lions.

Jack London wrote of herds of tens or hundreds of thousands of Seals floating around at sea and being hunted! Have we stolen their food and beaches etc thus effectively driving them towards extinction and to this Penguin eating!?!

I never knew fur seals were trained for circus tricks… always thought those were different types of sea lions, for the most part. Maybe grey seals from Europe, as they’re very people-oriented, but generally sea lions…

Considering how peaceful they look I think they would prefer staying in captivity rather than being hunted down by orcas at every corner

Think the Narrator Must have received a large sum of Cash from Marine Parks & SeaWorld 😡Describing these Atrocious Slave Canps as "COLOURFUL PALACES & HEAVENLY PLACES" is A Complete Travisty & Insult to Every Marine Mammal that has been ENSLAVED & EXPLOITED THERE & THE COUNTLESS 1'S THAT HAVE BEEN SLAUGHTERED DURING CAPTURE💔

    Can Humans be Tamed?
We need to develop ourselves as human beings beyond our animate level of existence, and it is possible with a certain kind of education.
Developing ourselves as human beings means learning and balancing ourselves with the integral laws of nature operating on our lives. If we learn how to positively connect among each other in human society, with altruistic attitudes replacing our current egoistic attitudes, we then develop ourselves beyond the animate level of existence and become human beings in the fullest sense of the term.
First, we need to provide for our animate lives, giving our physical bodies the food, sex and family that they require, then after taking care of those essentials, we can begin our human development. We then need to learn who and what we are, where we are from, why we exist, how we can develop ourselves, how we can control our human development, what our attitude to our surrounding society should be, what society’s attitude should be toward us, and how we can develop together harmoniously, i.e. us in relation to society, and society in relation to us.
We need to supply ourselves with this development that will make us human beings. Unfortunately, I see nobody understanding what it means to develop a human being, and we thus fail to realize such a process. One of the outcomes of our lack of development into human beings is our inability to understand the younger generation. We become increasingly detached from them, and do not know what will happen with them or how to guide them in a beneficial direction. We thus let life unfold as it does, into a proliferation of problems and crise.
Very simply, we need to learn what nature wants from us, and to develop in order to balance with nature’s demands toward us. If we meet those demands, we can then build a harmonious and peaceful world, one that is in balance with nature.

I left home at a young age and found adventure and fun and made many friends along the way . Surfed all over the world and led by example as I got older... Life is alot simpler I think. It is what you make it. No risk no reward
