- Опубликовано: 9 апр 2017
- Around the Crozet Islands, here is the incredible odyssey of a family of Sperm Whales facing rapid changes in their environment. From the stormy surface to the eternal darkness of the abyss, several generations of these deep-sea divers encounter men and their "toys": harpoons of yesterday, and fishing lines of today. Once victim of whale hunting, now accused of stealing fish, a sperm whale shares its private life with us. And what an immersion! We discover in turn its mysterious sonar, its competitors like orcas, and also the strange world of its neighbors - the deep-sea monsters. Amongst them, a revelation: the biggest squid ever filmed in its natural environment, almost 15 feet long. Come and discover the depths of the Crozet abyss...

I know whales are very intelligent creatures, but I never realised they were intelligent enough to narrate a documentary
Uncle Festa 😂
I must be part whale because I understand his clicks perfectly 🐳
You dont need to be particurlarly intelligent. Everybody can maintain a RUclips channel nowadays
That's Sir David Attenborough to you.
Uncle Festa o
That beginning made me think this was a parody.
Narrated by sir David's younger horny brother
How? It just sad. Nothing funny about it.
legit
Yeah, really sounds like a knockoff David Attenborough. Unfortunate. The narrator should try to find his own style.
Lol same
Never seen a first person doc on an animal like this; found it to be incredibly charming and fun 😭💐
@@speurtighearnamacterik8230no it’s just a sperm whale who sounds like Sir David Attenborough maybe because he’s seen so many BBC nature documentaries he picked up the voice! Anyway the studio needed for this whale to record his narration must of been big
I thought it was awful.

Funny how I just watched a documentary about this exact pod of Orca. Man Among the Orcas, absolutely beautiful to watch
Just noticed that too. Wonder who shot the footage and who used someone else's footage.
Same director. Bertrand Loyer.
Just finished watching that documentary literally 1 min ago and just came to this one. Saw your post and thought I'd comment. Still a little teary-eyed from man among orcas.
@@amateurastronomer9463 the orphan seal pup moment hit me so hard...the mother got eaten 😟
I saw that doco, it was epic -
The akward moment when sperm whales can speak better english, knows history and science better than me.
God what am i doing with my Life
kitaki zeinko bhahahahhaha poor you😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Well, whales do have big brains, eat a lot of seafood and they have a lot of time on their hands. So they should be pretty smart.
Stay in school kid...
kitaki zeinko Better English maybe, but it hasn't been stating too many facts. It even thinks it's been around for millions of years, evolved, and lives on a planet! So it's not exactly the smartest when it comes to some things. But, it's a whale with a head full of oil, so you can't expect it to be right about everything.
So glad that sperm whale was able to give us a play by play account of everything that happened. Hopefully next time we'll be able to do a Q and A with him.
A "POD cast" maybe?

He was angry. He had to make a record straight. Can you imagine being called dicc juice?
I really loved this doco ,all aspects whales perspective some humour and factual ...and that glimps of the hour glass dolphins what a treat. Thanks to those who made this very well done
This is by far the greatest documentary of all time! Brilliant! Stupendous! Outstanding! A modern masterpiece!!!
Despite the negative comments from too many unappreciative folks -- this is a terrific documentary
Totally agree. people are so nitpickers. it seems people are so sensitive nowadays.Excellent documentary.
I agree. This is an excellent documentary on how not to narrate a documentary.
His voice is annoying, hazy smokey sound. It's like nails on a chalk board.
Doug Bingham ...one year later from your comment, i agree. Its a bit sanitized but a good doc, regardless. Long live our beautiful whales...death to all of mankind...well those who hunt these creatures...may they become a penguin or a shrimp, something a whale would eat in the next life!!! 🐾🐧🕊🐧🐳🐋🐬🦈🐙🐚🦀🦑🦐🦂 LONG LIVE FRENCH OCEANOGRAPHERS!!!
Doug Bingham I agree! I love this guy!
I absolutely love this Documentary. At the end when he says "The secret, is inside my head."
and "The first whalers got my name wrong. But now, atleast, the record is straight. Let's keep it that way..." followed by the coda gives me chills.
Had chills from the outset and through out.
"I don't know if I can sir my hands are bleeding" 😂
Read your comment just as it happened in the video...such a riot 🤣
He deserves it, lol
That's heartbreaking to see those beasts stab the whale with the harpoon, evil humans
Enormous, powerful, incredibly intelligent and communicative. Nature masterpieces!
A superb documentary with a different perspective.
Stu JD A whale's perspective? The proverbial cow of the ocean. Yummy!

What I learned about Sperm whales from this video:
1. Sperm whales got their name from seamen.
2. They are veracious talkers.
Mike kirock Semen.
Punny!!
From seamen who thought it was semen

Not only entertaining but really educational... good job to the director, script writer and the narrator. What a beautiful documentary!
I love the presentation. From what I can tell it's strung together from cheap publically available video content, very well-sourced scientific facts, and a cranky old whale to do the commentary.

The footage is incredible! Took me a minute to get used to the narration style but once I did I didn’t notice any difference. It’s a nice documentary in my opinion :)
Hourglass Dolphins ❤️ I didn't know that Killer Whales were Dolphins too until I did a bit of digging. Beautiful and majestic
This is a super documentary. It’s pacy, informative and dramatic, the photography is mesmerisingly gorgeous. The narration is well timed and pitched, and the soundtrack integrates with the voice. I love the shots of dark, slate blue ocean and the magnificent bulk of the regal whales breaching and sounding. 🐳💕

I really dug the narration in the voice of a whale and I really appreciated the acknowledgement of the history of the whaling and fishing industry that led to the depiction of the realities of today's oceans.
Thanks for posting and keep up the good work. More like these please!
What a fantastic documentary
It was done so well as a story
Theses whales are beautiful mammals

Thanks for real depth and video .Bored and sarcastic people are never "contributors". The narrator is accomplished and it would nehoove others to pay attention
The narration was funny, kept me in tune. I learned a lot from this documentary. Ocean life is so amazing! 🤗😘

EXCELLENT DOCUMENTARY! That narrator is giving me life! Totally holds my attention. I would love for him to do an audiobook version of 'Moby-Dick'.
This doc has the best opening line ever!
Awesome documentary riveting and amazing. Here I am in the middle of the Canadian prairie watching the drama unfolding in the south Atlantic. Brilliant narration. The camera operators whom you never see. What a crazy world.
This is the greatest teaching tool for children I've ever, ever seen or heard. To see the little kids on the edge of their school chairs, mouth a jar, hypnotised & 100% sucked into the story, is school at it's best. Way to go, mr documentary, it's about time something new became available.
Ok karen
Agreed. Such a cool documentary.
The narration makes me think this is for children, but the footage is pretty awesome, especially the underwater footage of the Orcas towards the end. The last 10 mins are the best part...
You thought this was for kids? The first words sound not so child friendly
weird.agame best played by experts
“The narration makes me think this is for children”
Literally the first words in the documentary: Spermwhale...humpf! Shame on man for giving me a name thinking my head is full of semen and not full of oil...
Semen isn't a swear word and if you think kids are unable to comprehend basic biology, then you better buckle up and hold onto your seat! It's a wild ride from 1950s on out!!!
@RandomChick, If we are talking about children the ages of 5-12 then I don’t think they need to know what semen is. There’s a right age for these kinds of things....
I want to see more of this style of documentaries... i found having the whale be the narrator made it all the more interesting to listen to, and all the small attempts at humor, affective or not, kept the whole thing from dragging on and getting boring.
And ironically enough, brought a sense of human like emotion to what would normally be a fairly emotionless voice just narrating over randon clips.
Draconicus the Reaper I agree I’m usually bored by those doucementaries but not this one
Cause you never heard ones narrating by David Attenborough

my favorite commenters are the ones who have no concept of how boring this documentary would be without that narration
the best sperm whale film ever. I got to see the fight against orcas underwater
No, a male does not call other males to assist with coda (the quietest type of sperm whale calling), but with far more powerful 'slow clicks'.
Awesome doc! The dolphin interacting with the whale @ 31:40 is unreal.
Nice balance of music & narration; in many documentaries today, the music completely overwhelms the script, but you got it right. I appreciate the first-person narration. Many good details about these animals. Excellent footage. Thanks!
LOVE THIS DOCUMENTARY VERY EXCELLENT WORK!!
This was AWESOME...im always interested in my orcas too
I have a whole new respect for Best Documentary since I learnt so much from this .
I couldn't stop watching this
"Have they lost there taste in penguins?" That got me.
Being pragmatic, Anything to educate and show the beauty of these animals is good. Regardless how corny the documentary is done. Whaling is no longer necessary and countries like Japan and others that still participate in this barbaric practice should be condemned by the world as a whole and sanctions should be placed upon them. Please understand that I am not a tree hugger and realize that the fishing industry feeds millions. However, there are plenty of alternatives in this industry where whaling should be abolished. ABOLISHED BEFORE THE POPULATION IS SO LOW THAT IT CAN NO LONGER SUSTAIN ITSELF AND EXTINCTION IS ALL THAT IS LEFT.
So your against the Japanese hunting for food?
karin prince whales? Yes! no need to hunt in this day and age. Whale hunting is unnecessary luxury that could lead to extinction. Are their cravings more important than extinction?
@karin prince Ok, I'm against any hunting and fishing. Where do you go from here?
No need to caps your unwarranted alarmism. All life forms survive by eating other creatures. As long as it is done in a sustainable way there's nothing wrong with whaling that isn't equally wrong with exploiting other food sources. And we have to eat. If we die, so would the creatures that filled our place in the ecosystem. Yet here you are, brain turned to mush by fanatics, talking about condemnation and sanctions. It's ridiculous. You're ridiculous.
I don't understand why people would only reference barbaric practice as "Japan and others." Actually, I do understand why they do as such, but that's not the point here. Let me help with who the others are: Faroe Islands, Iceland, Norway. Seaworld is also on that barbaric practice list. BTW, it's humans that need to control their breeding to help save the world.
@0:11 WOW .... What an amazing way to start a documentary, great first words!
I noticed the music for the orcas is the same as in that doc about the pod that summer at that island, about the young Delphine, her mother & matriarch Lisson, Venus and her calf Junior, and help me but I cannot recall Lisson's mature son. I'll have to watch that one again, it must be the same filmmakers and producers. ❤️
PS-- Yes, same director and all... Very cool!
Glad I'm alive now, to see these things with my eyes. Thanks!!!
A magnificent documentary. I've always loved sperm whales, ever since seeing the John Houston movie, "Moby Dick," with life-size mechanical "whales."
I love that the title says Sperm Whales Dealing and then the colon.
Really well done and amazing photography. I learned a lot and the first person scripting is a great way to tell the story. More please!

Now that was a great Doc. thanks for the upload !
This was an absolutely fantastic documentary and rendition. I can't believe I haven't seen it before.
Good video. Man will always be the most dangerous animal to other life on the planet, either directly or in directly.
Man is only Dangerous because of the Brain... Folks that think Man is Dangerous need only omit the Brain to be Equal but I digress
That's already happened. Lot of brainless people walking around.
It's also due to its agility and dexterity in their arms and hands. Give that intelligence to a whale, their abilities would still be limited.
That's why despite their intelligent, there's little they can do against entanglement in fishing gear.
That is the truth. The brain is misused and we became arrogant and abusive.
Humanitie's scientific name is parasite.
I did not expect to watch this all the way through it was good & informative

The intro makes me feel like "Ozzy Man Reviews"
Just once I'd like to be able to watch a documentary about an animal without all the negativity or fear mongering... I love animals and I think we are way too careless in our overuse of everything this Earth has and that we need to protect and conserve every single species. But I just want to watch the animal without feeling guilty the entire time!
Have you tried not reading the comments?
We have changed the food chains everywhere, including the deep sea and the Southern Ocean. Watching whales there means watching how they adapt to deal with our changes.
Don't read comments, perhaps?
I mean just once I'd like to go through a RUclips wildlife video and not encounter some self righteous person that think they alone are concerned for wildlife.
But I know that if I read the comments I will encounter thousands of these individuals. They are not alone, so many video commenters make similar comments. Sometimes for every negative comment I will encounter 10-30 people talking about how negative everyone is being. I'll scroll for a full minute before finding negativity. Such as this video
Amazing video truly amazing love hearing it from the whales point of view
