This movie is so unique and a lot of that comes from the budgetary limitations. I love the way that almost all of the backgrounds at night are totally black and empty - it wasn't a stylistic choice for the most part, they simply couldn't afford to light the entire area... But it creates this effect like they're surrounded by a murky abyss from which anything could emerge without warning. It keeps the tension high but gives the characters a chance to get some nice facetime because there's nothing to distract from their performances.
Sam Rami and Bruce Cambel are life long friends. bruce has cameoed in all three films of the 2000 Spider-Man films. And Dr. Strange 2. The car a 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88 has been in almost every film he made. And is a staple of the franchise.
I haven't seen Dr. Strange 2 yet so I can't say, but from commentary from Ash vs. Evil Dead, Bruce said the Delta is literally in Everything Sam has done including the western where it was stripped down to the chassis and used as a wagon.

If you think about it: This is actually an absolute masterpiece of film making. It has been created by very young filmmakers (in their 20s) as a small project with a very low budget. Bruce Campbell (Ash) is much more a beloved icon than a famous actor. He has been in other roles but relatively few and even fewer many people can name. My favorite role of his is in The X-Files episode “Terms of Endearment” (s6e7).
So when this film was made, Sam Raimi had two close friends, you may know them, Joel & Ethan Coen. They needed help getting their first film ‘Blood Simple’ financed. So Raimi and Bruce Campbell filmed an iconic scene from Blood Simple as a small trailer and the Coens took it door to door and showed people! It’s a phenomenal film and should definitely be added to your list!!
This is my favorite horror movie of all time! It completely changed how I see both horror and comedy! Hope you guys check out the sequels as well, including the badass reboot from 2013 (don't worry all the original creators were involved with it)
Some people didn't like the reboot because of course what's Evil Dead without Bruce Campbell as Ash, but as a huge Evil Dead fan I thought it was actually pretty well done and good in it's own right getting back to the straight horror as it was originally intended. As you pointed out Robert Tapert, Sam Raimi, and Bruce Campbell were producers on the project so it still had the authentic seal of approval.
@@CynicalGear I wasn't going to say anything, but you're right, the first one is straight horror with a couple unintentionally funny parts, the second is horror/comedy, and the third is comedy/horror.
@@CynicalGear The first movie has a lot of humor too it imo. It's just very unique in how it's integrated into the movie hence why I say it completely changed how I see comedy and horror. A lot of people don't recognize it I guess because of how twisted and dark the whole thing is.
My personal favorite is the Evil Dead 2. Perfect Horror/Comedy combination. The camera movement is just insane ! You can see it in here as well, but they mastered it in the second film.
I will never understand people who say to skip Evil Dead 1 and to start the series with Evil Dead 2, it just doesn't make sense. Evil Dead 2 is NOT a remake, do not be fooled by the recap at the start of it. Bruce Campbell himself said the best way to start 2 is at the part with the Evil entity moving through the woods and hits Ash.
I remember this when it came out....It was what was called here in the UK a "Video Nasty"...And was band for sometime...But I got to see it with friends...Pirate video copy....It was crazy to see back then.....but the more times you watch it...the funnier it becomes...."We're Gonna Get Yea!"...was a saying for years!...hahaha.....Me and a work college were fans and went to the cinema to see "Army of Darkness" when it came out....It was such a laugh...we laughed all the way through!..Not sure what everyone else in the cinema thought..hahaha.!...We then had the sayings..."Groovy!"...and "Let's Go Get Ourselves A Witch"..classic!.
The second movie is basically a larger budget, "slapstick horror" remake of the first. It is about 1000% of the insanity of the first movie. Super gory and hammy and hilarious. Imagine if the Three Stooges starred in a gory R-rated horror movie.
@@daltonio6001 It definitely will all depend on taste since all three movies are so different in tone. I think the show did a good job taking something from each one.
I like the first one. A definite slasher film, but very well done. Evil Dead 2 is my favorite in the series. A cross between slasher and the three stooges. Very bloody, very funny. And Army of darkness is just a lot of fun where we get FULL ON ASH.
The Evil Dead? Grosser than The Human Centipede? Okay, maybe the first one, but The Human Centipede 2 is probably the grossest movie I have ever seen. This is a great reaction btw! One of my fave movies😊
If you watch the movies, and then the show Ash vs Evil Dead. You will fall in love with the character Ash Williams. There is a lot more comedy mixed in to balance everything out. If you stick with it, you will love the series.

The 2nd movie has a recap of this movie but they didn't own the rights to this so they recast his girlfriend and left the others out to refilm scenes. Bruce Campbell said the best way to watch is fast forward until the ending of the entity attacking him happens then play

This is the only one of them with a believable element of evil…. Where it truly brings a sense of terror. I watched this when I was pretty young, and of all the horror movies I’ve seen over the years, this one haunted me the most
Scrolled and didn't see anyone say this, so just want to mention: For the Detroit first showing of this movie Raimi had ambulances and EMTs parked outside the movie theater. Raimi warned potential viewers about how they might have a medical emergency from watching the movie.
Idk if you guys have done any Wes Craven films but there was an ongoing friendly rivalry between him and Sam Raimi. A few Easter eggs to the other director in their films going forward
Yes, yes, yes. There are so many awesome B-movies from the 80s, when B-movies still showed up in theaters and didn't go straight to DVD. Everything from the "Ernst" franchise to the "Critters" franchise. Sure they were cheap and derivative. But like "The Evil Dead," B-movies are where great filmakers and actors cut their teeth.
This has to be one of the best reaction vids I have seen. You were both so much fun to watch in this one. Evil Dead has always been a fave of mine ever since its release date, and one of top ten in the horror/comedy grouping.
Imagine seeing this on the big screen! I did when originally released, and several times after as I convinced more & more friends to see it as well. A CLASSIC. Thanks for reacting to one of my all time faves (all in the franchise really, including the TV series)! Cheers!
as a kid, that card reading scene scared me quite badly. (also, if you enjoy these you should watch Ash Vs Evil Dead. it's a great series and better than the films)
2yrs ago I got to see a special screening of Evil Dead in Austin with Bruce Campbell hosting. He talked about the filming process and how low budget it was. He had some hilarious stories of Evil dead and Sam Raimi. Another movie worth watching is Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive. It’s another gruesome one!
Great to see how effective the original Evil Dead is all these years later. Watch it again with commentary sometime (once you've recovered). It's such a treat to hear Bruce talk in detail about all crazy challenges they faced trying to bring this film to the world. Truly an indie success story!
Evil Dead 2 is my favorite. The very best of the trilogy. Im easily scared in movies but what I like its that you can fight to survive, and Ash is a pro on that.
Samantha was not enthusiastic in seeing Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, but she is a trooper and endured them for you. Fortunately, they were less gross and more entertaining.
If you watch part 2 (better/funnier/higher budget) keep in mind that they did not have the rights to the first one, so the first 20 minutes is a refilm/recap of the 1st one so it can stand alone. the 2nd one actually starts when Ash is hit by the evil and flies through the air, then it lines up perfectly with end of 1st one. The 2nd one ends at the start of Army of Darkness
Please, give the remake a watch as well! It's a great movie on its on merits (i.e. doing it's own thing and taking everything dead serious). It's also ridiculously gory, Samantha will LOVE it I'm sure, lol.
Linda's demon makeup was originally much darker and traditionally more demon-like before the changed it to the baby doll face. You can see her original makeup when she's being dragged out of the house because that was all shot before her inside scenes when she fights with Ash
Poor Sam, im there with ya girl. I watched this film when i was in Middle School. I had nightmares for days. Good on you on getting through it. Cheers to both of you from NJ USA.
The chainsaw that Ash holds up to Linda still had the chain on it. If you look closely you can see the actress' neck pulsating because of how scared she was

I saw this when I was about 13 years old. Scotty, "You're not gonna leave me, are you, Ash?" Followed closely by zombie in the cellar, "You're not gonna leave, me are you, Ash?" Evil Dead has stayed with me since. Great reaction! That was a rough watch, I could see plainly you two were as disturbed and freaked out as I was! And that scream from Sam...instant classic! I think this is my favorite reaction on your channel so far. I love Evil Dead, Bruce Campbell, and Sam Raimi so much. I think Samantha will enjoy Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn a lot better.
I think you mean Evil Dead 2 because this one really isn’t a comedy number two is where the comedy starts.
And the TV series!!
They don't make them like this anymore! This movie is awesome
Hell, Sam Raimi didn't even make the sequels like this.
Definitely watch part 2, it is a classic.
My personal favorite is the Evil Dead 2. Perfect Horror/Comedy combination. The camera movement is just insane ! You can see it in here as well, but they mastered it in the second film.
Oh god yes! lol
@@Silver-rx1mhno say the name God in vain
@@G70051 Oh get bent.....
I’m glad you guys watch movies like this because I could never straight up watch it, I need a reaction with it to make me less scared
In the end credits, the movie describes itself as "The ultimate experience in grueling horror." Seems like they nailed it!
The second movie is basically a larger budget, "slapstick horror" remake of the first. It is about 1000% of the insanity of the first movie. Super gory and hammy and hilarious. Imagine if the Three Stooges starred in a gory R-rated horror movie.
Poor Samantha! I've seen this movie dozens of times. By far the most entertaining reaction I've seen from you guys!
Part 2 has much bigger budget. This movie was basically the pilot for his career
I like this one much better than Evil Dead 2 though
@@daltonio6001 It definitely will all depend on taste since all three movies are so different in tone. I think the show did a good job taking something from each one.
I like the first one. A definite slasher film, but very well done. Evil Dead 2 is my favorite in the series. A cross between slasher and the three stooges. Very bloody, very funny. And Army of darkness is just a lot of fun where we get FULL ON ASH.
Your reactions to the jumpscares were amazing. 🤣 Also the pencil in the ankle still freaks me out more than anything in any Saw movie. 🤢
I highly suggest “Possession” also from 1981. It’s another really crazy horror movie that’s also really good.
Isabelle Adjani (Possession) and Ashley Laurence (Hellraiser) are my horror movie crushes. Also, Sam Neill is great in Possession.
Really underrated movie. Great atmosphere to it.
Possession by far is the most toxic relationship movie ever made
@@MikeHunt90731 the director was actually making it during his divorce
Never seen that. Will check out.
22:32: “Shut up, Linda!”
Lol, that always tickles me.
Bruce Campbell’s just the best.
~*~*~
28:49: Wait, what? I can’t believe people actually suggested to start with “Evil Dead 2” and skip this. WTHeck?
Man, you guys do not miss with the movies y'all react to. One of my top horror movie favorites. I hope you guys make it to 100k soon, y'all are getting close.
Fun fact of the first movie it was all done with friends and family, even makeup and building the set.
I am writing this to help out tbr Schmitt and Samantha and this video and this channel with the algorithm ✌️❤️😚☺️
Even as a teen I was just amazed by the creative cinematography. Rarely did I notice stuff like that back then but it was pretty much impossible not to with this one
The 2nd movie has a recap of this movie but they didn't own the rights to this so they recast his girlfriend and left the others out to refilm scenes. Bruce Campbell said the best way to watch is fast forward until the ending of the entity attacking him happens then play
Hence, what I call The Evil Dead 2, a mini remake and sequel. Best way to describe it.
So much creativity, great direction, Joe DeLuca's stellar soundtrack, sometimes it just all comes together and this is a perfect example.
I'm so glad you did this film. It genuinely baffles me how many other reactors ended up skipping this one due to poor advice, it's such a disservice to them and understanding why Evil Dead is so highly regarded.
The first is the best. The next two are way too cartoonish.
@@ryanjacobson2508 it’s their style. It’s not better or worst, just different. I prefer the other 2, but I can understand people that like more the first one. All about taste…
4:56 min - I've never noticed what she drew before -
It's SpongeBob SquarePants, guys!
Just before he hits the make-up chair in the morning!
😆
Hail to the king 👑 and queen 👑 tbr Schmitt and Samantha ✌️❤️😚☺️
Cheryl: ASH IS WITH LINDA! SHELLY IS WITH SCOTTY! YOU KNOW WHAT I GOT?!??
Treees 😬
This is by far the BEST reaction to this movie I’ve seen!
Also, I’ve watched this movie SOOO many times but even I jumped at moments during this reaction because of how scared you both got lol.
Great reaction, I can’t wait to see your reactions to the next 2!
This is the only one of them with a believable element of evil…. Where it truly brings a sense of terror. I watched this when I was pretty young, and of all the horror movies I’ve seen over the years, this one haunted me the most
You should definitely submit "The Exorcist" to your patreons to vote on. It is a classic horror film that everyone should see.
Scrolled and didn't see anyone say this, so just want to mention:
For the Detroit first showing of this movie Raimi had ambulances and EMTs parked outside the movie theater.
Raimi warned potential viewers about how they might have a medical emergency from watching the movie.
Hope you two are having an great and awesome weekend ❤
Idk if you guys have done any Wes Craven films but there was an ongoing friendly rivalry between him and Sam Raimi. A few Easter eggs to the other director in their films going forward
Watched this movie wayyyy too many times back in the mid-80's.
Campy, unique and fun as hell.
1) Gory stupid fun. Bruce Campbell is delightful.
6:26 "that was you, forsuree"
classic guy who just got scared move right here
This has to be one of the best reaction vids I have seen. You were both so much fun to watch in this one. Evil Dead has always been a fave of mine ever since its release date, and one of top ten in the horror/comedy grouping.
"youre under more furniture?!?!" loool man just keeps getting trapped under bookshelves
If you plan on watching the amazing sequels, be advised that the first few minutes of Evil Dead 2 are a simplified recap of this one, essentially.
26:01
TBR, “Hey, the sun’s out!”
Sam, “Oh, goodie….!”
Love you guys’ reactions
Best Evil Dead reaction ever! I'm sure Sam Raimi would take the screaming as a compliment.
Sam Raimi was only 19 (and a college drop out) when they started production in the fall of '79.
Imagine seeing this on the big screen! I did when originally released, and several times after as I convinced more & more friends to see it as well. A CLASSIC. Thanks for reacting to one of my all time faves (all in the franchise really, including the TV series)! Cheers!
It's impressive what they managed to do in this movie with the budget they had
Scared Samantha is the best! 😂
Sam, Bruce and the Coen Bros are buddies from way back.
I highly recommend A Simple Plan, his best non horror/CB film.
Sam roomed with the Coen Brothers, Holly Hunter, Frances McDormand, and Kathy Bates some time after this came out.
as a kid, that card reading scene scared me quite badly. (also, if you enjoy these you should watch Ash Vs Evil Dead. it's a great series and better than the films)
It is one of my favorite cinema scenes in general.
Classic, second one is even better. And you gotta love the third. Don’t forget there’s a show now too!
Probably the funniest reaction video you guys have done! The amount of jump scares was hilarious 😂
If you want a really funny horror comedy, except for Evil Dead 2, i'll recommend Tucker and Dale vs Evil if you haven't seen it! So funny!
You guys should watch the remake as well 🙏
If you watch part 2 (better/funnier/higher budget) keep in mind that they did not have the rights to the first one, so the first 20 minutes is a refilm/recap of the 1st one so it can stand alone. the 2nd one actually starts when Ash is hit by the evil and flies through the air, then it lines up perfectly with end of 1st one. The 2nd one ends at the start of Army of Darkness
Please, give the remake a watch as well! It's a great movie on its on merits (i.e. doing it's own thing and taking everything dead serious). It's also ridiculously gory, Samantha will LOVE it I'm sure, lol.
This. The remake is great in its own right, especially the 3rd act.
I was combing the comments to make sure someone suggested the remake. 100% agree! Watch this movie, guys!
Yeah. The remake bring the gore to a new level.
Linda's demon makeup was originally much darker and traditionally more demon-like before the changed it to the baby doll face. You can see her original makeup when she's being dragged out of the house because that was all shot before her inside scenes when she fights with Ash
This movie ranked at #76 in the 100 scariest movie moments on Bravo, cool reaction as always Schmitt & Samantha, you both take care
@@justindenney-hall5875 What TV Special, I Meant The Movie

Poor Sam, im there with ya girl. I watched this film when i was in Middle School. I had nightmares for days. Good on you on getting through it. Cheers to both of you from NJ USA.
Also the same car Uncle Ben drives in Spider-man.
Can't wait for them to watch EVIL DEAD 2, it's the best in all 3 movies
OMG haha NEVER expected this reaction ❤️
Best. Crazy. Monsters. Ever. These demons really truly love messing with people.
The chainsaw that Ash holds up to Linda still had the chain on it. If you look closely you can see the actress' neck pulsating because of how scared she was
Yay I was waiting for this reaction thank you tbr Schmitt and Samantha and hope you both are doing well and are having a good day or night so far ✌️❤️😚☺️
Hooah! for making it all the way through in one piece, guys! ( :E
I think this is my favorite reaction on your channel so far. I love Evil Dead, Bruce Campbell, and Sam Raimi so much. I think Samantha will enjoy Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn a lot better. It's so much fun. It's very similar in his editing of the Spiderman Trilogy Sam Raimi made. I can't wait for your reactions to Part 2 and Part 3 (Army of Darkness). I really do hope if you guys enjoyed this trilogy that you guys watch "Ash Vs. The Evil Dead" Series. I think each episode is 30 minutes and it's so much fun! Also, hope you guys also check out the remake of Evil Dead. It's actually really good but on a different level. Loved this video. Long live the Chin.
The gore and puppetry in these old movies are simply delightful.
YES!!! LOVE THIS MOVIE!!
This was Sam Raimi's first film and it was the first film of the 1980's to receive the NC-17 rating.
The ED series exists as an excuse for the Raimi brothers to get paid to torture their buddy Bruce 😅
If he isn't doing pratfalls or getting slapped around, Bruce is doused in gallons of fake blood and other goo.
Ted Raimi gets his own share of torture in the the sequel 🥵
When you finish with the ED trilogy, don't miss Sam Raimi's western - The Quick And The Dead
Groovy
@@justindenney-hall5875 and? You must be fun at parties
Hail the Chin! And if you do some searching, there were no trailers, no hotels, they lived in that cabin and all conditions were miserable.
Miserable is an understatement. 😅
"Ash, you cannot be this dumb!"
Oh, trust me, he can be a LOT dumber.
Dumb and lucky! Thats why we love him!
Ash: "Challenge accepted!"
Bruce Campbell is from Birmingham, MI and a life-long friend. I went to the premier of this film at the old Redford Theater in northwest Detroit in 1981. Fun night. Bruce's dad Chuck Campbell was a hoot and a very funny man! The film was made with the budget of $350,000.
