    As the owner of a 1968 black line super reverb I definitely know why you had the headphones on. When you crank a ceramic speaker Super reverb loud enough to break up like that it can make your ears bleed. Props Johan. I can only imagine how loud it was in that room. At 5-6 mine rattles my whole house. Mine has stock 10L6 oxfords. But I do own a like new quad of 1964 Jensen C10q’s that I’m thinking of swapping out just for experimenting with it.

    Don’t ever let a good amp slip through your fingers because it’s not a collectible museum piece.
    Some of the circuit modifications in the Silverface era were trash, most weren’t. They increased reliability and versatility.

    Finally I'm ahead of the curve. My two 1976 Fender Super Reverbs with the master volume and tube rectifiers just went up in value by 50%.
    Seriously though, my 1st amp is completely original, including the original RCA black plate power tubes, and it is my favorite amp. I will never part with that amp while I'm still breathing. You can turn up the volume to start getting a little breakup and then dial in the master volume level.
    The 2nd amp has the master volume disengage. Some say it sounds much better with this mode but I don't agree.
    Running overdrive and distortion into the front end also sounds great. From classic rock to even some metal with the right pedal (Friedman BE-OD Deluxe).
    But of course as we all know, Johan could plug into anything and make it sound great.
    Thanks for letting the cat out of the bag (sarcasm)! Cheers.

      I recently scored a 1976 Super Reverb and it is near impossible to find out much about it. Mine was made, to the best of my knowledge, January 1976 based on every single part in it dated 1975 except the reverb driver transformer which dates to 2nd week of 1976. I need to go over it and do all the necessary maintenance. The cabinet was water damaged and rotted on the bottom so I put it in a Bandmaster Reverb empty head shell for now. I realize its a 2 ohm speaker load too.

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  3 года назад

      Thanks! I think there are many Plexi clones that come pretty close. In a rig it’s usually the output transformer and speakers that differ the most to the originals. When it comes to outboard it’s especially the mic preamps that are needed. Would be interesting to compare the 525 compressor and 550B EQ to the plugs in a video! Cheers!

      @@JohanSegeborn It looks to be 40w (so its really more the quintessential early 70's Silverface rather than the later UL monsters). 2 6L6 (solid state rectifier) and the master volume dates it between 1972-1977. Pull out boost was added in 1975 and it went UL /70w in 1977.

    • @JohanSegeborn

      It actually turned out to be the UL version. I was informed you could identify that by he existence of mid pot on the normal channel

    • @cgavin1
      @cgavin1 3 года назад +1

      @@SwirlyWhirlyXYZ They are very loud, very clean, very heavy amplifiers. Ideal for pedal steel, jazz, chicken pickin', rhodes etc. Wonderful reverb as all these amps had. They have maybe (arguably maybe) a little too much negative feedback thanks to the 470ohm (which was unchanged from the blackface days) NFB resistor and the additional blocking from the "ultralinear" aka distributed load taps on the output (no choke + higher plate voltages for more headroom). In basic terms they are wonderful if you want loud and clean but basically won't offer much if any power tube distortion. Nor would you want them too as the 500v+ plate voltages on the 6l6gc's would render most modern production tubes lifeless in a few hours if you did! The originals (not necessarily this model but the twin reverb definitely) had not so good speakers which contributed to the luke warm reception they received and the enduring "internet wisdom" that they suck. They don't. They are just designed to stay clean. To the bitter end. That doesn't prevent you from getting speaker breakup, preamps can still be melted in to overdrive etc. The biggest complains seems to be that the significantly bigger and heavier transformers (on most models) made an already heavy amp in to a bunker buster/boat anchor. I use a 1977 UL twin myself as my main gigging amp with an OCD 1.7 and a maxxon compressor, wah etc. No complaints really. The master volume actually works too and these amps always sounded good to me at lower volumes unlike Vox and Marshals etc which just don't get "going" until everyone is deaf and you've been evicted. Sorry I've said too much.. !
