Hope I didn't come off too mad about Samus but c'est la vie - I just have fun talking about these characters and when I get to ranting it comes out funny. I don't think she's horrible but I'm excited for future Smash games and the potential for the veteran fighters. I seriously recommend playing the Metroid series though. Thankfully, you can get through the original on the Nintendo NES Online. That only took me a few hours going in blind. Super Metroid also is there on the SNES online if you have a membership. Both of those I wish I could replay again blind, it's just one of those immersive experiences that always reminds me why I love gaming. Zero Mission and Fusion, are amazing games in their own right but have been MIA since they haven't had any recent re-releases. Luckily the GBA is easy enough to emulate, so you can get to experience the best of these games pretty easily. I guess there's Metroid 2 - I played that on console and let's say I think you can skip it. So I recommend giving it a shot. I gained a new appreciation for the history of this series, and I hope this video is evidence of that. Next up I have a bigger non KYM video coming next month, but beyond that I have some Kingdom Hearts to play. Wish me luck.

I think you did a good job to represent some of the... frustrations I've seen regarding Samus.
I've said this about Ridley before, but it makes sense to mention here. It feels like there's a distinct lack of passion when it comes to representing Metroid, like they know it has a few dedicated fans so they do the bare minimum to check the boxes, but they don't really care about it at all.

You did a good job explaining the problems you have about her representation in Smash... Though I honestly think that's okay for her. Samus in Smash fills a unique feel than the other zoners, that I think represents her character more than her games. Other zoners are NOT good neutral characters, but Samus has strong options for when characters get on her. She's got a lot of knock back on these moves too, which I would say is a nod to her alien blood, the chozo, increasing her physical abilities. One of her best kill options is STILL her Screw Attack despite the flack you gave her for it, which is true for the games. It's probably a stretch, but that's how I see it at least. She's a character I enjoy a lot, and have for a long time. And the connections are close enough to make her feel like "Samus," imo.

      @BlueAmpharos 2 года назад +14

Dark Samus was my biggest disappointment in Smash Bros. More than tripping in Brawl. She had a phazon wave attack which would have been a very unique move no other character had. Or they could have included that move where she hovers into the air and charges in the direction that is inputted before it goes off. Also her phazon shrapnel attack, which could have been a variation of Samus's charge shot that had a wider range of attack with the shotgun-like spread the further you are away but each projectile is on the whole weaker meaning unlike Samus, you want to be up close when you unleash that shot to get the full effect... but then having a wider spread is good too if you just want to do some chip damage but I imagine that you'd have to fully charge the shot to get the full distance of the move. There's a lot more than just that which you could do with Dark Samus, maybe have a Dark Samus ECHO fighter... no I don't mean another clone, I mean like how she splits apart in the final showdown in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Echoes was the subtitle of Metroid Prime 2 so... was a bit of a joke reference. Anyway there's a character in a game inspired by Smash Bros, called Rivals of Aether, a character who creates smoke and can create a clone, though it is destroyed in one hit and I don't think hiding in phazon would really work, but anyway the implementation is there and shows that it can work in a platformer fighter, and with some tweaking could be a viable special move. They just... did the bare minimum aside from the fantastic animation, but the moves... oh she holds her arm cannon lower... and... that's it! That's all they did outside of aesthetic stuff! She moves more creepily and her missiles look weird, and there's more blue, and she holds her arm cannon lower to hit characters like pichu and kirby when he's ducking. So much potential as a character... and all she does is hold her arm cannon closer to the ground.

@@BlueAmpharos I've said this verbatum somewhere else, but even if they were to keep her an echo they could have easily swapped out a move or two from other existing characters, like they did with Chrom.
This is especially egregious since Dark Samus uses neither Screw attack nor Morph ball Bombs in the games, but she does use moves that are very close to other characters specials.
Her Up-B should have been a copy of Incineroars, since she actually uses an attack identical to that, the one charge move where she flies up in a Ball of Phazon armor and crashes it diagonally downward. Now that Mythra is out, her Ray of Punishment also resembles Dark Samus other armored charge move.
Her Down-B also could have been made a reflector like Nayrus love, since she uses a move almost completely identical to that as well.
When you shoot a Hyper Missiles at her in MP3, Dark Samus uses a curtain of Phazon Tendrils to deflect it. It has a fairly decent hitbox if you stand to close, and it has a set duration, so you can sneak a Hyper Missile in afterwards if you wait it out. This is almost a Textbook example of how reflectors work in Smash, so it could easily be converted one-to-one.
Those changes would have been easy to make since the moves already exist, so it's a real pity.

The whole conceit of echo fighters was that they were easy to implement by working off the template of an existing fighter, thereby freeing up time and resources for other things. Neither of the things you described here could have happened, because, in both scenarios, they'd have to dedicate resources into making those changes. The end choice in this regard would either be to have Dark Samus as a Samus clone, or not to have Dark Samus as a fighter at all.

I guess if I wanted to revamp Samus, I'd give these changes:
    - *Neutral Attack, Side Tilt Attack:* Power Beam: Fire up to three shots forth. Hold to fire a strong Charge Beam.
    - *Neutral Air Attack:* Power Beam: Fire up to three shots forth, or in tilted directions.
    - *Forward Air Attack, Back Air Attack:* Wide Beam: Fires three fanned beams in the given direction.
    - *Side Smash:* Wave Beam: A long piercing beam forth (not a projectile).
    - *Neutral Special: Plasma Beam:* Chargeable heat beam. High charge can yield strong shield damage.
    - *Side Special (Smash): Ice Missile:* A variant with a chance of freezing opponents.
    - *Up Special: Screw Attack:* Continues damaging spin on the way down. Can be canceled by other moves (like Mr. Game & Watch's Fire).
    - *Down Special: Morph Ball:* Takes on Morph Ball form to move around quickly with a smaller frame. Press attack button or special move button to plant a Morph Ball Bomb, which sticks in midair and explodes after time or on contact with opponents. Press shield button to resume normal form.
    - *Shield Special: Melee Counter:* If this attack hits an opponent, she'll blast them with a strong shot.
Dark Samus could keep the Super Missile in this situation, though her Charge Shot could probably become a Phazon Beam with a poison effect.

    @MT_Rift 2 года назад +79

    Here to play devil's advocate:
Samus is a very hard character to design to feel balanced merely because of the nature of Metroid gameplay. Metroid is a power fantasy: you start with nothing and end with just about everything. Simply plopping endgame Samus into Smash would be really overpowered, and it's not as easy as it is with Mega Man or the Belmonts. In a way it seems like they had to compromise to make a cohesive and balanced moveset. For example, having free aim and being able to charge a projectile while moving would be pretty overpowered like I mentioned before; having some of her normals fire in different directions works well, and storing Charge Shot having the illusion of charging it constantly is pretty clever.
That said, she undoubtably has a lot of problems. She has weak and lack of references as you mentioned (Ice Beam, Morph Ball, Melee Counter, etc.). Her particle effects and sound design just look and feel wrong. Biggest of all has to be how little she uses her Arm Cannon in her normals, with the biggest offenders being her up tilt and up aerial. If they gave her better references and utilized her Arm Cannon more, her design wouldn't be too bad. I have some ideas on how I'd change Samus but I've already typed a nice wall of text so maybe another time.

[There's a Dread Spoiler at the end here]
The main thing I'd change would be for her normals to fire beams, as well as giving her a special mechanic, call it a gimmick, that lets the player hold the A button at all times and then release it to use charged version of the move (which would obviously only work on the normals that actually fire the beam).
Of course, this would make the Charge Beam Neutral Special obsolete, so what do I suggest as a replacement? _Beam Switching_ à la Monado Arts (but probably without being time limited).
We've got 4 Beam Types to use:
    - Power Beam: The standard one, high damage, yellow in colour
    - Ice Beam: Can freeze enemy on charged shots, low damage, medium knockback, blue in colour, freezing effect
    - Wave Beam: Bigger hitbox, so it's more likely to hit an enemy, medium damage, low knokback, purple in colour, electric effect
    - Plasma Beam: Doesn't disappear when hitting an enemy, medium damage, high knockaback, green in colour, flame effect
Clean up the other Specials a bit with how exactly they work and there we go. Also, change the Final Smash to either Power Bombs or the Hyper Beam instead of just being a generic huge laser. It even works like that in Dread, so do that. Complete with the Metroid Suit, that'd be sick.

I can excuse Samus's design, since it seems to me that, like a lot of the original characters, her design is less about literally translating her gameplay and more about interpreting how she would fight in a fighting game. Ok. Personally.
How I would revamp the moveset would be this:
•Neutral Special: Same attack, but you can aim your body around, the charge beam would be less powerful though for balancing purposes.
•Side Special: Just make the missiles faster man. Also add some more options
•Tap: Missile (Red): Fastest, Normal Damage
•Press: Super Missile (Green): Slowest, Creates blast radius
•Hold: Ice Missile (Blue): Fast, freeze on impact
•Long Hold: Storm Missile (Orange): Normal Speed, Multiple aimable Missiles.
    •Up special:
Screw attack, press B while midair to Screw attack again, maybe needs to be balanced.
    •Down Special:
Use Cross Bomb instead, and more damage, yikes this ability needed a buff.
    •Dodge: add reference to Flash-Shift.
•Dash Attack: Dash Melee, this would probably be orange to reflect the varia suit variant of the dash melee, as Samus is represented by that suit.
    Edit:
    •Final Smash:
The Ωmega cannon from Metroid Dread:
Instead of just a large laser (since other characters already do this)
    Let's make this something Unique.
•Samus will still be stationary, but:
Samus will start off with shooting a wide line of super fast bullets, after 2 seconds of being blasted the enemy will be completely stunned and "marked" (like the Emmi's without their face plate).
•The second step is that Samus will take a second to charge up her beam before firing a very large bolt, dealing a ton of damage, enemies who were "marked" from the previous step will have 2x dmg dealt to them when this step hits.

I think one word can explain a lot of the choices made in Samus' kit. Balance. If Samus had the mobility, firepower and the ice missiles from the games, the opponent would basically have to play a Tohou game just to get close, and then Samus could just run away and start all over.

I think Smash 64 wanted a melee fighting emphasis e.g. everyone can punch and kick, which is why they made her arsenal the special moves. They then kept her this way because her Smash moveset seemed "more popular/iconic"(?) than a more accurate moveset, like with Ganondorf.
If the next Smash is a more stripped down, back to basics, from the ground up game like I think it will be, they might make every character accurate to their original games.

Honestly, despite the familiarity aspect, I do hope they can rework Samus to better reflect the games, hopefully including things like the counter from Samus Returns and Dread.
And if they really want to keep the classic Samus move set?
    SA-X fighter, babyyyyyy
Samus in her games has come a long way since Fusion, so they could have SA-X as a fighter with the classic move set while Samus herself gains things like ice missiles, counter parry, speed booster, and so on, kinda like how Young Link acts as the way to play the classic Link moveset in Ultimate without the new BoTW elements.

    • @Metal_Blake
      @Metal_Blake 2 года назад

Okay, so a bit more as I think about this:
For this, I would have both Samus and Dark Samus redesigned moveset wise. Dark Samus would drop the classic moveset for a new set that derives from things the Samuses do in the Prime games specifically, such as beam switching, boost ball, etc. Meanwhile Samus herself would be given items from the 2D games, like ice missiles and speed booster. This way, when SA-X takes over the classic Samus spot for movesets, there is no confusion between SA-X and Dark Samus over who is now supposed to be an echo fighter of who, on top of getting better representation for both Metroid playstyles. Then for SA-X, we just take current Samus and just edit the name plate, problem solved.
Then when it comes to costumes, in order to tell players apart, all of Samus' current costumes would go to SA-X, but would be adapted to the bulkier power suit design from Super Metroid and such that we saw used in Brawl, as opposed to the sleeker Other M design we got in Sm4sh and Ultimate, largely because this is cannonically how the SA-X appears. Samus, on the other hand, I imagine having 2 different costumes with 4 colors each: the Fusion Suit and the Dread Suit. Both would have their power, varia, and gravity color schemes, but I imagine the Fusion suit's last one would be the Omega suit, while the Dread suit could either have the 4th be based on Raven beak, or a certain other suit I don't wanna spoil for anyone who hasn't beaten Dread. With these new costumes, it also means that there won't be confusion over whether someone is playing SA-X or Samus in a fight, since the Dread and Fusion suits are visually distinct from the classic power suit design.

Pretty neat video, though a few comments on things:
Samus has received small, though noticeable changes throughout the smash games that do affect her playstyle. In Melee, if you trigger a bomb jump, you can act immediately out of it. If you use a bomb next to an opponent (or their shield), it will immediately explode, triggering bomb jump. I don’t know about 64/Brawl, but what this does mean is Samus actually has a lot of great offensive pressure, especially if you score a knockdown on a platform, because you’ll almost always be plus.
Neutral Air was changed from Brawl onwards to a double kick, from a single outstretched kick. Not the biggest fan of this change personally, but it does let Samus’s nair be safer on shield if you land both hits, meaning you could potentially follow up with something safer up close.
At least from my personal perspective, getting hit by Samus up-tilt feels like one of the most impactful moves you can get hit with, in terms of sheet aesthetic oomph
She’s a zoner, but she can absolutely fight up close and personal

Some Changes that would go a long way to make Samus much more Unique
Jab - Replaces her Neutral Special and allows her to roam and shoot freely. Also allows her to use Charge Beam while moving and hold it while moving. The Charge Shot is no longer as big.
Jumps - Samus now has Five Midair Jumps but controls similarly to Space Jump making it a bit more awkward.
Side Special - Able to Switch Between Standard, Ice, and Super Missiles. Standard Missile fires at a much faster pace, Only a bit slower than her regular shot. They also deal much more damage. Ice Missiles Go at the Same Speed as Standard Missiles but do little damage and just freeze the opponent. Super Missiles go slower than the Standard Missiles but deal heavy damage.
Grab Attack - Grabs Enemy by the Neck Area and does Drain Damage, healing herself.
Grab - Grappling Beam is now one fast straight shot instead of a flexible slower shot
Down Special - Able To Switch Between Bombs and Power Bombs. Bombs now do way more damage and give Samus an iffy way to Bomb Jump. Power Bombs are used by holding Down Special and charging it. Once fully charged lets out a bigger explosion. Easily Counterable.
Shield - Instead of Normally Shielding, Samus turns into her Morph Bomb Form making her a much smaller hitbox. She can no longer Shield. In Morph Ball form, she can roll across the stage and still use bombs.
Final Smash - Samus' Ship Laser Beam (Cinematic)

Some cool ideas are in here for sure, but others seem like they sacrifice a character being playable or balanced in favor of just accuracy to the character. In my eyes, that's a shitty idea. In my opinion, with Smash Bros, the goal should always be to keep usability and game balance while also representing the character. Too far in either direction, in my eyes, only results in problems. Too far towards representing the character? I feel I don't even need to bring up the Belmonts or Inkling. Too far towards game balancing and usability? Mario. By stabilizing both ends, I feel like the problems become way more reduced both in quantity and power.

The suit is connected to her brain and requires a great deal of concentration and temperance to keep working, so much than a normal person could never be able to pull off (hence why only her can use the suit) even doubt or some fear can cause the suit to come apart and become uncontrollable

In Super Metroid it doesn't sound like that anymore because it just straight up isn't metal anymore, it's all made of biological materials. So based on this video I can gather that you want Samus to...
    - Have the majority of her normals as projectiles (and they have to be full projectiles, "projectile-simulating physical fireballs" are off limits)
    - Have a fully invincible UpB that goes way higher than it does now, also has a horizontal variant, and has extreme kill power
    - Have an invincible dash attack that covers the entire stage
    - Have omni-directional aiming on her neutral special which would become a rapid-fire or projectile, possibly with a charge mode on top of that
    - Have a quick-fire straight line projectile that does, say, 10% damage with a smash variant that does at least 20% damage (because "only 12% is lame"). And it's also aimable.
    - Shrink her hitbox to Pichu size at will and drop bombs that hit half the screen
    - Have an instant ranged grab
    - Have a projectile that freezes enemies for easy combos
Absolutely, cut and print, wonderful character that's definitely not completely broken and horribly annoying to fight against in any way. To quote a certain spiffy British fellow, that sounds perfectly balanced with no exploits.
Like, could they do more with her moveset? Absolutely. I don't agree with her having *all* projectiles (and I'm fine with the fireball smashes personally as facsimile for close range gun shots), but in the current Smash landscape with characters like Mega Man she could have a couple normals changed to projectiles. But half of the comments in this video basically being "why isn't it as good as it is in Metroid?!" illustrates pretty clearly that she would be broken as hell if she was a 1-to-1 representation of how she plays in her source games. Samus is amazingly strong in Metroid once she gets all her upgrades. Easily one of the strongest characters of anyone in Smash, just going by her in-game abilities and how she plays in her games. Because that's the kind of series Metroid is, it's a series where you come across obstacles you can't pass and you're weak and outclassed then you get upgrades and by the end of the game you're an unstoppable 1-woman killing machine.
There's gotta be balance somewhere, because you can't have an unstoppable killing machine in a fighting game. Because Samus feels so strong in her games and a fighting game needs to be balanced, the result is that she can never feel that strong in Smash as she does in Metroid. And that's just kind of the nature of the character I think. You can make her more interesting, more accurate, but she's never going to be perfectly representative because her being an overpowered one woman army is kind of central to the feel of the character.

Alright, So i'm gonna throw my hat into the ring on how Samus could be updated, but i'll try to keep this brief. I still feel like her Charge Shot would be a huge part of her game plan, but it would have multiple applications in her move set. To start off, I imagine her having a similar gimmick to Byleth where different directions have a different weapon. Neutral would be the Power Beam, Foreward would be Plasma, Down would be Ice, and Up would be Wave. These would all have slightly different properties like Ice being slower but can freeze, Plasma being the most powerful and can pierce, and Wave has the largest reach.
And now for the charge shot. Her charge shot would still charge up like normal, but maybe you can still move but not attack. The big new thing would be that other moves can consume her charge to become more powerful. Her Neutral Special would be about the same. Her Down Smash would work like her down tilt, but with the Ice Beam. When charged, it has a wider area and will always freeze. Her Forward Smash would be this sort range piercing blast (Think sort of like that Shotgun custom move in Smash 4), and charged up it would go further to about a mid range. Her up Smash would be similar to her current one, and charged it would shoot a wide cone-shaped projectile above her. I feel like this could apply to her Missiles and Super Missiles as well.
The other big change that could happen would be to replace her Down B with a the Arm Counter in the recent Metroid games. Instead of being a traditional counter, this would cause Samus to dash forward with an uppercut, allowing her to perform a unique follow up if you intercept an attack. Additionally, this would charge you a little bit, allowing you to get your Charge Shot up from being more aggressive.
I don't feel like Smaus would a complete rushdown character with how much she shoots thing in Metorid games. I've always felt like Metroid games have this feeling where you need to bob and weave in and out of danger to get as many shots in as possible. I feel like this gameplay style of constantly needing to keep your charge up while playing chicken with danger would fit Samus pretty well.

    Samus Rework, let's go:
New redesign will be her Dread Outfit. Best selling game in the series by a country mile, so her new outfit should reflect this.
    Jab: same
Dash Attack: running Melee counter from Dread.
Aerials, Tilts, Grabs and Smashes: Keep (Samus isnt exactly known for her close quarters combat).
    New Special Moveset:
B: Power Beam/Charge Attack. Rapidly press the button to continuously fire her beam. Low damage with little hitstun like Falco Laser. Hold the Button to store a charge shot. Full charge will be weaker than full charge currently in Smash (new full charge will be as strong as current Samus 1/2-2/3 charge). Samus can move at slightly reduced running speed while firing, but can only fire in front of her (Similar to Banjo)
Side B: Slide Morph. Samus slides toward her opponent, gaining intangibility for the duration and a weak Dash Attack. If the button is held, Samus rolls up into her morph ball, becoming smaller and faster. While rolling, Samus can plant up to 3 bombs at once with the A button. Press the B button at any time to Unmorph. Side B to make it feel more natural as a movement/evasive ability (which Dread finally allowed up to do with the slide/morph button)
Down B: Swap to Missiles. Samus replaces her Beam B to Missiles. Regular missiles have a slower rate of fire than her Beam and no longer home, but travel slightly faster than her current ones. Hold to charge an Ice Missile, which keeps the speed of her current Super Missiles. Getting hit by an Ice Missiles freezes the opponent in place, but has no Knockback (like Ice Climbers). Frozen targets hit by her dash or smash attacks while frozen take 15-20% more knockback to reference the freeze-kill trick and allow kill setups lost by charge beam being weaker. Refire Down B to swap back to beam. Samus has to swap between Missiles and her Beam in cannon, and Min Min showed us that a character can be made to use a special move specifically to modify her other special moves.
Up B: Screw Attack. Basically Imagine Rosalina Launch Star, with a Screw Attack Hitbox while traveling.
Dark Samus will be kept the same due to her current Moveset being more reflective of the Prime games than the 2D ones, and to keep her as a legacy character like Young Link was for the Link reworked.

Starting to notice a pattern with the Smash 64 cast honestly.
It's like all of these were either great or at least ok at the time and just got worse due to retcons and new stuff every time, most of which simply couldn't fit with the playstyles they were originally conceived with back when there were only as many characters as, like, 8 (12 if including lastminute extras).
The only thing that's really 100% missing in Samus in Smash 64 is the Ice Beam which was maybe considered a spoiler

  • @Gamer_Dylan_6

Samus should use the shinespark as her down special. It would work like how it works in dread where you have a second to aim it before you shoot off. If you use it on the ground you dash forward with a constant hit box like Wario bike but you can't turn around and a bit faster. Pressing down again will activate the areal down special. Also I'd make the up special work like jokers grapple with the graple beam and make the screw attack the neutral air. Make her neutral special a free aim like dread and her side special a hard hitting super missile with no free aim. Also also her forward tilt is the melee counter. It has super armor and reflects projectiles.

I'm honestly surprised they haven't given her any ice moves at all, despite it being such a big thing in her home series and the fact that we only have like four characters in the entire Smash roster that use ice attacks, and three of them only use ice attacks because they happen to be a spell they can use. The fact that Samus can't actually defeat a Metroid assist trophy without the use of a Mr Freeze or something is just insulting.

While I do agree Samus needs an update like what Mario and Link have gotten in the past, I think Ultimate did a lot to make her feel better. The universal change of charging her beam in midair and canceling it with a jump helps her be a bit more mobile with her charge beam, Screw Attack is a great out of shield option and a respectable kill move, which helps it feel like it's got a semblance of the power it has in the base games... She can't bomb jump but she can stall and change her aerial momentum with them, so they can help her in her recovery.
I agree her missiles should pack more of a punch and maybe they could implement an ammo system for her missiles to compensate for the increase in fire power. Maybe a base missile is only slightly weaker than a full-charged Charge Beam shot, and a super missile is stronger but uses up more of her missile count. Maybe she can get more by KOing an opponent, getting KO'd, and a special input where she uses her charge beam charge to instead regain more missiles. It's still not entirely accurate, but it would keep her true to her current playstyle while adding a new element that changes the character's playstyle to better reflect their character.

So I’m just going to come up with a few fixes to the specials for samus (with power suit)
Neutral special: I’m going to take from prime 1 for this one. When neutral special is chosen, a small circle of 4 options appear around the player with the following options
Power beam: a quick charging shot that deals good damage (like the current one but a bit faster)
Wave beam: a little slower charging speed and deals less overall damage, but follows enemies (like current missiles) and can stun them for a little bit
Ice beam: the slowest charging beam, dealing damage like power beam, but a fully charged shot can freeze enemies
Plasma beam: a moderate charging speed with high damage, but not much range
Side special: no reason to give ice missiles since I’m representing ice beam in neutral special, but the only change I would make is likely more damage for super missiles
Up special. Screw attack can stay, but I would give it more horizontal mobility. (Also should mention on the topic of jumps, 3 weaker mid air jumps instead of 1 solid mid air jump)
Down special: switch to morph ball form which has its own move set of specials
Morph ball neutral: normal bombs. 3 on screen at a time but you can bomb jump with them
Morph ball side special: boost ball, dealing damage to enemies it runs into
Morph ball up special: one big power bomb, big damage but can’t use normal bombs while the power bomb is going off and has a large reload speed
This I feel fits samus more (sorry this feels like if samus was a DLC character)

  • @ShadowWolfTJC
    @ShadowWolfTJC 2 года назад

I suppose I'd better design a new moveset for Samus for Super Smash Bros., drawing inspiration from more recent Metroid games, especially Metroid Dread (but also Metroid Prime):
Basically, Samus's main gimmick would be that she constantly spams projectiles from a distance, even while moving, and even while in the air, much like Mega Man. Unlike Mega Man, Samus can switch between using her weaker Power Beam (which can charge into a Charge Beam) and her stronger Missiles (which can charge into Cluster Missiles) with Neutral-B, but can only use her Missiles if she still has ammo for them. (If not, she'll automatically switch back to using her Power Beam/Charge Beam.) Samus can gain more missiles as she successfully lands hits on her opponents.
To help her keep her distance from opponents, Samus can toggle in and out of her Morph Ball form with Down-B. While in her Morph Ball form, Samus can drop Morph Bombs, Diffusion Bombs, and even a Power Bomb (if she has one available, which recharges slowly). Samus can also use her Speed Boost with Side-B while on the ground for quick getaways (or for quickly closing the distance), which turns into Flash Step if she uses Side-B while in the air, which allows her to quickly put some distance between her and incoming attacks. Finally, at close distances, she can counter with her Smash attacks, or knock enemies away in an instant with her Screw Attack by pressing Up-B, which she can do up to 5 times.
    - Neutral-A, Side-A, Up-A, Up-Side-A, Neutral-A-Air, Side-A-Air, Up-A-Air, Up-Side-A-Air, Down-A-Air, Down-Side-A-Air: Rapid-fire Power Beam shots (or Missiles if toggled on) in various directions. (Power Beam shots do minor damage that might not even cause flinching in opponents.) Hold A to charge up for a Charge Beam shot (or a Cluster Missile), which, unlike old Samus's Charge Beam, wouldn't be anymore damaging than most other fighters' Side-A attacks (much like how the Charge Beam isn't even close to being Samus's most powerful move in her games. Heck, even her missiles are more powerful than this).
    - Down-A: Slide kick, like in Metroid Dread (and like Mega Man's slide kick).
    - Side-A-Smash, Up-A-Smash: Counter, where Samus performs a mediocre-damaging swipe (even for a Smash Attack) that, if it hits an enemy's melee attack (like with other characters' counter moves), negates the damage to Samus, and allows Samus to then blast the enemy with a Charge Shot (like in Metroid Dread and Metroid: Samus Returns).
    - Down-A-Smash: Sweep kick that can hit enemies in front of and behind Samus, same as old Samus.
    - Side-A-Dash: Shoulder tackle (same as old Samus).
    - Neutral-B: Toggle between Power Beam/Charge Beam and Missiles/Cluster Missiles when performing A attacks. While in this mode, Samus emits a laser, which would cause opponents painted by it to be targeted, causing Missiles to home in on them (like in Metroid Dread). Missiles are limited in number (10 max), and if Samus runs out, she'll automatically switch back to using her Power Beam/Charge Beam. However, missiles can be regained as Samus attacks opposing players. Holding down A will charge for a Cluster Missile (a-la Metroid Dread), which would be at least as devastating as any other character's Smash Attack (and probably more deadly than Samus's old Charge Beam), but would cost 5 missiles.
    - Side-B: Flash Shift/Speed Boost: Allows Samus to perform a quick dash in midair, which would do no damage, or to charge up for a speed boost while on the ground, which would knock enemies away on contact (similar to Palutena's Super Speed skill from Super Smash Bros 4). Press down to enter Shine Spark mode, where if Samus jumps, causes her to charge up for a second before performing a devastatingly-powerful (comparable to when Ness hits himself with PK Thunder, turning himself into a devastatingly-powerful missile) dash attack in any direction (with limited, though still long, range to prevent accidental KOs off-screen, like with Marth's Final Smash).
    - Up-B: Screw Attack: Allows Samus to jump up to 5 additional times as a spinning ball of harm (similar to the Metroid Prime games), knocking enemies away on contact (instead of trapping them in a damaging combo, like with old Samus).
    - Down-B: Morph Ball: Change into a Morph Ball. Press B or Shield (regardless of direction) to exit. While in Morph Ball Form, press A to drop Morph Balls, and Jump to jump. Hold down A slightly to charge up for dropping a Diffusion Bomb (like in Metroid Dread), which has a cross-shaped blast area. Hold down even further, while there is a Power Bomb available in the inventory (recharges slowly over time, not available at start, much like the Wario Waft), to drop a Power Bomb, which would explode like a Smart Bomb item after a second.
    - Shield-B: While on the ground, toggles Samus into 360-degree aiming mode, where (like in Metroid Dread and Metroid: Samus Returns) she's stationary, but can aim in 360 degrees, and fire with her Power Beam/Missiles, and charge up for her Charge Beam/Cluster Missiles. Press B to switch between Power Beam/Charge Shot and Missiles/Cluster Missiles, and press Shield or Jump to exit this mode.
    - Shield-Side: Samus Flash Shifts to dodge enemy attacks while on the ground (instead of rolling into a Morph Ball).
    - Shield-Down, Shield-Air: Standard dodge (same as old Samus, plus every other playable character in Super Smash Bros), though she uses her newly-acquired Cloaking ability from Metroid Dread.
    - Grab, Grab-Air: Grapple Beam (same as old Samus).
    - Final Smash: Hyper Beam (same as old Samus).
    - Neutral-B (Kirby Copy Ability): Kirby switches to firing Missiles with the A button, even while in midair (like Samus), can also charge up for firing a Cluster Missile, can jump (like many characters wielding heavy firearms like the Cracker Launcher from Brawl, or the Hammer), and can switch back to his normal moveset by pressing either B or Shield. However, unlike Samus, Kirby would lose his Copy Ability if he runs out of missiles, and he can't replenish his dwindling missile supply by attacking opposing players.

With the Morph Ball being as important as it is in the series, I've always wanted for Samus to be able to switch in and out of Morph Ball mode with Down B.
It would essentially work like Zelda/Sheik in Melee. Even though it would technically be considered a different fighter according to the game's internal logic, it would be limited in what it could do to separate it from other fighters. It moves kinda slow and can't grab ledges or pick up items (obviously). If you get hit with a strong attack or get caught in a Multi-Jab, it forcefully changes you back to Samus. It can jump, but not very high, and it gets only one jump. The "jab" and "tilts" would be a regular bomb so that you could roll or jump around while planting bombs at the same time. The bombs are moderately strong and you can bomb jump, but you can only plant three at a time like in the Prime games to prevent infinite jumping.
Neutral B would charge a Power Bomb, kinda like in Other M. It would be very powerful, but it has a long charge time and won't go off unless it fully charges. Its range would be comparable to the Star Fox bomb item.
Side B would be the Boost Ball. It would send you flying in a small arc in either direction and it would deal damage like in Prime 2. If you hit a foe or wall, you'll bounce off. It can be used in the air too.
In Metroid Dread, if you hit the counter button while in Morph Ball, Samus will un morph and counter while doing a sick backflip. That would be the Morph Ball's Up B. It wouldn't be an actual counter like Marth's. It would just deal damage and could combo directly into Samus's Up B.
Down B switches between forms without doing the backflip counter. You can change forms very quickly like with Pyra and Mythra. The Ball has a lower profile than Samus if she was crouching, meaning you could morph to dodge certain attacks.
The weirdest thing the Ball could do is grab opponents. It uses the Spider Ball to latch onto the front of an opponent and you could lay bombs while latched on. You can also charge a Power Bomb while latched on, and if the opponent's damage is high enough, they will be grabbed long enough for a full charge, basically ensuring a kill.
