Prior service Marine here. I was active duty for several years. I now am in the Army National Guard. It has been a fantastic and rewarding experience. I can remain close to my family, go to school, and continue with my civilian career. The opportunity to deploy is something I've looked forward to in the guard. I deployed once with the Marines and I would do it again in a heart beat. Pick an MOS that transfers to the civilian world and take every chance you can to improve yourself and deploy. 7 years active and now in the NG. Some of this info was solid and truthful but some was cringe worthy. If someone wants to go to college and have education benefits the guard cannot be matched. Active duty is great for those that don’t want to go to school... bc depending on your MOS you will not have time. Guard has ADOS, technician and AGR. Don’t sleep on the guard. I hope others watching this dig deeper.

I joined the guard simply to experience military training. I didn't want to regret not doing it. There was a lot of tough times during training but overall its def worth it. I use the military to my full advantage. I put money in my tsp account, I have a security clearance which is not easy to come by, I can now see things from a different perspective because of my military experience and now because of covid-19 I make really good money while many people are being furloughed from their jobs. I was able to expedite the process for my parents obtaining their green cards simply because I was in the military. I honestly see the NG or reserves as an immense safety. You're a government employee which means you qualify for many benefits and can take advantage of discounts that companies offer to service members. I can still stay close to my family while also attending school. If you play your cards right its definitely worth it. However, I only recommend joining when you are younger like right after high school. I had trouble socializing with people when I was younger so the military has extremely boosted my confidence. The reason I say younger is better is because you have few to no bills to pay, most aren't married, you can still attend school, you have the free time to learn a lot etc. Plus gi bill for a 6 year contract as well so you can get paid while going to school. It's lit but even with all I have said I will not stay in the army. I will most likely transition to the air force and become an officer only because the quality of life is better and they have more technical jobs that will fall in with what I'm studying in school which is computer engineering. Who knows maybe get into the space force 👌

Our platoon was in cover hiding from an Apache and jumped out to take pictures. Our state was assisting Florida NG during A.T. at Ft. Stewart during our annual two week training through all this and We (VAANG) was in a convoy unknowingly with FL and along came one of their tanks just driving along the road side passing us all, safety killing us and their guys. :). No matter what branch you join it will be tough and you may have regrets but you can do it and Thank you! I agree, I always said that the guard isn't good for kids right out of high school, especially since the post 9/11 applies only if you've done 36 months of active time. If you're a bit older and have your shit together it's a better option for healthcare and stability. I'm in the Air Guard and your career really depends on your self motivation. Depending on your job you can hop on orders and stay there, or pick up an AGR slot. For us, you can get up to E-6 on your first contract, after that you have to be willing to switch units to get E-7. I know plenty of people who ranked up faster their active duty counterparts. The only thing I'd gripe with you is the retirement, you can do 20 years and get the pension, you just can't collect until 62, however every year of AD it gets reduced by that amount.

One thing I’ve never heard is Guard Vs Reserves because the benefits are very different. As a result, it’s easy to go active duty than trying to get out the Guard. Also, being in the reserve’s it’s all fediral time Vs Guard your drills is state time until your called to active duty (Deploy).

Something that I would have liked to have seen was covering the fact that the national guard has State reserve time State active duty time then has Federal reserve time and federal active duty time but only that time that you spend under the reserves and active duty at the Federal level counts towards your retirement and benefits so if all you do is your one weekend a month and 2 weeks in the summer for annual training if you're in the national guard you ain't really getting any retirement and you're not really getting any health benefits either and so in fact you're really getting no benefits other than those benefits that the state provides

Is it possible to go active within the national guard? If so can you explain how it works and what it entails?

    • @cjguy3510
      @cjguy3510 4 года назад +1

Scalone326 I’m currently in the National Guard and yes it is. You can go active nat
Guard or just plain active. Going active nat Guard is a very competitive thing to get into you need good pt scores and it’s also job dependent. Going active is pretty simple you just have to put in a packet that takes 6 months and you might get a job change.

You can volunteer for deployments which puts you on active duty orders. You would have to apply through your unit. I’d suggest picking a job that is required a lot to be deployed and you’ll more likely get what you want

Joining as an officer into the National Guard. I’m already making over six-figures as an aerospace engineer. It’s not really about money or benefits to me, I already have all that. I want to serve my state and country, when God wants me to deploy I’ll be ready.
I wonder if anyone in my position is just as stupid to join.

Hey, I just signed a 6 year contract 😭😭 I know you said active has way more benefits and better pay, but I wasn't really focused on which is better, I chose NG because it's part time and pays for college. It's too late now, but if you're joining for the SOLE purpose of paying for college, is it worth it?

If going to college is your only reason for joining then yeah the NG is the way to go. It's a lot faster than going active. A lot of guys in my unit get their 4 year degree while in the Guard then commission active duty.

Look into joining the SMP program and going to a school that has ROTC. Once you get on with both you could qualify for the GRFD scholarship which takes care of 100% tuition and fees for 2 years in exchange for 8 year reserve obligation upon graduation

Hey i have a question, Thank you for keeping it real here. I just wanted your opinion on this.
I'm fresh out of high school and graduated last year. I'm almost finished with my AA in nursing. So the reason I am joining the military is to better myself as a person, learning stability and really need to get my shit together. I don't NEED the military, but i honestly feel like it could benefit me as a person, character, overcoming fear, building confidence, work ethic, and overall alot of habits I have and want to break that are hindering me in sooo many ways (especially in school) that I know the military will fix. for example i am a BIG TIME PROCRASTINATOR and i know damn well basic + AIT will break that out of me.
I feel like if i work smart, it will benefit me in many ways. i definitely would want to go active duty but with my school plans part time would be the best option for me for now. Only reason I chose national guard over reserves is because i can get more money for school so i might as well. I want to become a paramedic and since I can get my NREMT certification ( im choosing 68w) from the national guard during AIT, right when i get out i can work a little bit and use my earned money to become a paramedic.
(btw the only reason im going to school for nursing rn is because in case this paramedic shit doesn't work, i'll just do two more years of school and become a nurse. Its just a backup really)
I'm still tied between choosing a 3 vs 6 year contract. Like i said i wanted to do active duty and avoid all of these "calling out of work" . idk 6 years just seems like a long time but i'm considering 6 years because 1) GI bill and 2) by the time my contract ends, i should be done with school; and if i liked my time in the military, i can go for a little. Do you think i'm thinking about this wrong? Am i over glamourizing it? Should i be careful with some things? I really wouldn't care about deployments or benefits tbh but i just don't want to make stupid mistakes and think i would get something about of the NG that i really wouldn't.

Safi A. Go for a 3 year contract so you get an idea of what’s it like so you’re not locked in for 6.

I was an emt. And before you talk about doing medic or a longer commitment as a nurse you should get experience doing ride along or clinical before you go for either career or signing military contract with those goals in minds. Being an emt affected my soul. I was haunted for a long while. Go try volunteering first
