Good information. A few things I’d add. It is not one weekend a month, two weeks a year. Like you said, that is the MINIMUM. Depending on your unit there can be more. In the infantry that is the case. There are 3-week training rotations, there are 4-week rotations at JRTC or NTC. If you are deploying there will be additional training on top of the basic requirements. There are required schools to go to for promotions. And sometimes those weekends are 3-4 days. I’ve done a 9-day drill before too. Oh, deployments. You can deploy. Some people hear “National Guard” and think we literally guard the nation here. No. I have deployed in the Guard. People signing up need to remember that while we all have our reasons for joining, ultimately you are joining a fighting force that is to train and be ready to win in combat. Doesn’t matter if you’re a cook or Special Forces. You are becoming a Soldier whose job it is to deploy at some point. If you don’t want to deploy, don’t join. The Global War on Terror might be over (on paper), but the next conflict is coming. If you become an officer or move up the ranks as an NCO, there will be things outside of drill weekends you will have to do. It simply can’t be done all in a weekend or by the full time unit staff. This was an adjustment for me. Part of it though. “Leadership is the responsibility to do more, not a privilege to do less.” Someone smarter than me said that and it’s true. I have just over 9 years in the Guard.
To add to the deployment thing, 46% of all deployments were National Guard, out of all the branches. Also while I was in the 34th ID, I learned the National Guard was the first into Europe during WWII, half a year before the Marines even started Island hopping. The 34th was in Ireland in January, before continuing to run the campaign in Africa right after everyone else showed up to invade. The National Guard has been involved in every conflict, and was the very first branch of the military.
Nice video-good job! One thing to add, as a former commander of a Army Guard Maintenance Company, you have a reasonable to good chance you will deploy on active duty for up to a year or more, and you might not be performing the MOS you trained for. My unit deployed to Iraq for a year as a general support maintenance company, and we did not turn a wrench for the entire year. We did force protection the whole time. It was a very difficult experience for our soldiers who had different expectations of what the Guard was all about. There is much more than state missions and the minimum time requirements. Keep up the good informative work!
Thanks for the video, I’m a senior in high school and I been thinking about it for a while. Definitely one of my options to help pay for college and put on my resume
@@ConsensusX oh I decided that I’m gonna join the Air Force as active duty, had a talk with my uncle who was Air Force for 23 years and took me to see recruiters and stuff. Haven’t signed nothing yet, but yea.

Do a video on older guys in the gaurd…I’m 31 and want to join…it’d be nice to have a perspective of someone more in my shoes. House, wife, kids, career.
All the older guys in my unit seem to enjoy our drill weekends and everything. You'll go to basic and AIT, same as everyone else, then come home to do your MDAY thing. I went to AIT with a 34 year old former marine, and another 36 year old (no prior service). These guys were probably the favorite dudes in our class. Of course, being in your 30's in a barracks full of people fresh out of highschool has it's many downsides, but overall, they both said they had fun. Long as you treat everyone respectfully and aren't a total d-bag you'll fit in just fine. Though the drills will probably throw some old guy jokes at you since you're likely older than all of them.
As far as what you mentioned, you'll get a little extra cash each drill (I believe) in the form of basic housing allowance. Some for housing costs, some because you have dependants. As far as work civilian side, you can't be fired because of military obligations. As far as making a career out of the guard, there are full-time opportunities with the guard itself but depending on what MOS you are, it may be better to become what's called a fed-tech. These are the civilian guys who are paid by the govt to come work on base. In my case, I am a 15G (Sheet metal/Airframe repairer) in the guard. The army pays us for the work, but pays the civilians more. This is all stuff you can talk about once you're at your unit. As far as drill weekends go, it's almost always super laid back, not really what you'd get in the big army. And everyone I've met had been exceedingly easy to talk to, even for a guy like me who struggles with communication.
Good information. Wanted to share information regarding the weekend drill topic. A weekend drill for national guard is not necessarily only 2 days a month. There are months where you drill 2-3 days a month Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Some days you will have long days, and sometimes you will not be able to go home that weekend and will have to stay in the barracks depending if the battalion is there or not. Speaking from experience, my past drill weekend I wasn’t allowed to go home and we drilled the 3 days from 7am until 6-8pm each day. So be prepared for long days don’t expect it to be a breeze as long as you go in with that mindset you’ll be good.

Anyone seeking to join the Guard should first talk to a prior service Guardsman or Guardwoman especially one involuntarialy separated due to the Covid-19 Policy. Under the current situation globally and domestically as a Prior Service Guardsman I would not advise a young adult in their Junior Year of High School or a High School Graduate to enlist in the National Guard Army or Air of their home state. Now if their State has a separate State Guard, State Military Reserve or State Militia from the National Guard, yes join that, not the Federal Armed forces at all.

Frankly, you're a dick if you don't want to go to a state mission. Basically every state mission is helping your fellow humans during a disaster or stopping looting and arson during civil unrest. I'm considering joining, and I wish I could just sign up for the state missions and not be subject to Federal service. I'm not opposed to Federal service, but I don't like the oil wars we keep waging. Send me to Eastern Europe or Taiwan to defend the maritime world order from the spread of totalitarian continental powers, fine, I'd want to fight, but don't send me to Desertistan where the people trying to kill us are just trying to "repel the invaders" and we're just guarding oil rigs and poppy fields.

With an age waiver they will take you until 42. I also heard that number is 43 now. It wouldn’t surprise me though.
Great video My Son plans on going and I am so nervous even though I am a single parent he’s been talking about it and I wanted to know about it and the way you explained it I feel a little bit more comfortable🤷🏽♀️
I suggest doing a lot of research. If you don't want to do the National Guard, I highly suggest the reserved. I've been researching the USCG & definitely wanna be active-duty for them. =)
Hey man I’m sorry I ain’t trynna take your time, but I’m wanting to go to boot camp for the National guard here in a little less than a month, but before I sign the paperwork I’m wanting to know if I can sign a two year contract, and have my senior year of high school count as one of those years? I plan on going into the navy after, I just need to get stuff in order first. Thank you for your time
From my knowledge about being in the army. You can only do a split so do basic training during one of your summer in highschool and then doing AIT another summer.
I enlisted at 20 with a wife and a 5 month old daughter what this video doesn’t mention is basic/AIT is the most boring, defeating, rehabilitating, and mental strengthening 5-8 months of your life depending on your MOS I was a 12B CE it was 3 months bootcamp 1.5 months AIT and like 2.5 weeks reception I cried a few nights thinking about my girl and my baby would I reccomend joining No would I do it again Yes
THis was helpful. I have a few questions though. Does the NG require you to pay for anything like your uniform and stuff or does it come free with being in the military? What career did you choose, like were you an 11b infantryman or something else?
Great Video! As a mom, I am very hesitant about my son joining the military. I didn't know the national guard was like this until now. I have an 18-year-old son who is in his senior year of high school. Despite being accepted to many colleges, he decided to join the national guard. For an honor student, what would you recommend?
He can still go to college and be in the national guard. I did a video on this called SMP program. I personally think if it’s something your son wants to do then I would recommend. I completely understand feeling hesitant and everyone is different in there situation. The national guard is a fine balance of military and civilian life. This is also a good stepping stone if your son wants to make it a fulltime career or go back to normal civilian life. He will still sign a contract however he will be at home most of the time.
Just because he wants to serve a few years doesn’t mean he can’t go be a hot shot academic, business man, etc. afterwards. I got my degree, and then enlisted, and I’ll be a civilian again soon in my mid 20s with leadership confidence and real world experience my peers don’t have. Some young men (the only ones who are worth a damn) have an internal sense of duty to serve and do their part to the society we live in. That is honorable. If you don’t respect that in your son you’re wrong for that. Let him do his time like he wants to, become the good man that he is destined to be, and it doesn’t take away from your civilian life it makes you a BETTER civilian when you’re out because you gain experiences like no other. Be PROUD your boy wants to be an actual man and step up honorably to do his part, even if just for a few years. Good luck to him. God bless America and the few good men who truly uphold the reputation, like your son.
I have a question?! I just want EMT school to be paid for and they called me to see if I was interested in going to the National Guard, do I have to stay with them and continue with them as in military service
Not sure what you mean but if you’re asking if they can pay for your schooling without being in the service, absolutely not. If youre asking if you have to stay in past your contract, no you don’t have to. The training they give for 68W(combat medic) certifies you for emt , I believe. So it’s part of the initial training you go through after boot camp. All you have to do is 1.complete the training And 2. Fulfill your contract.
Definitely! They will take you up to age 42-43 with an age waiver. You don’t even need an age waiver for the Army, Air Force, Navy, etc… it’s age 35 for the Army before you need an age waiver. Make sure your background is clean, no drugs, alcohol, if you’re on meds tell them. There is a program called genesis now and they look up all your meds and everything.
Great video brotha, I’m 19 with a well paying full time job but the military always interested me. In your opinion would it be smarter to go the reserve route or national guard? What would be the main difference’s?
There’s a few key differences between the Guard and Reserves. 1. Guard units are part of the state, Reserve units are not. A governor can call up units in their state for disaster or civil unrest response. Reserves are a federal asset only. 2. Reserves do not have combat arms such as infantry, armor, cav scouts, field artillery, Special Forces, etc. National Guard has all of that, although your state may not have it. For instance, in Alabama there are no cav scout or armor units. There are infantry, artillery, and Special Forces though. Just depends on what you want to do, what’s in your state, and how far you are willing to travel on a monthly basis for training.
i’m 17 and i’m currently in. i believe the national guard would be great for you, active duty or not. look at each and every benefit you can get and take it, depending on what your MOS will be
im currently still in high school as a senior right now, and i was wondering after if were to join, after my basic training is done, where would i be stationed to do my drills/job? i live in texas and i wanna go to college in person.
You can be attached to the texas national guard if you want to do college in texas. If you are wanting to do ROTC you can do this thing called SMP which means theyll pay for your college tuition while making a drill check.
Hi, I’m going into the National Guard I’m 17 years old I’m going as a 68W and Im leaving this summer but I’m worried about BT so if there’s any advice you can give please do
No basic training is not the same. Even in the Army there is different basic training depending on your mos. For example infantry held at fort benning vs Jackson.

Does not tie you down to one state if you want to go to another. The process is called IST (interstate transfer) where you can fill a slot in another state. Also you will find a majority of times that someone will also drill in a state they are not currently in!

Absolutely considered a veteran, a lot of people are misinformed. Even have it on my drivers liscense. What I can say generally speaking once you have completed basic training and 180 Days after arriving to your unit you are now considered a veteran apon the VA regardless what branch, regardless active or reserve. However after doing some research this is showing that this is prior to 2016 so laws may change.

I was told by this mechanic that people who go in part time don’t get their benefits or pensions until the age of 60. Do you know if that’s true? Thanks!
Yes. But sometimes they give Early Retirement Credit for activation for National Emergencies. Three months early retirement for every three months activated.

I did both after serving on Active Duty and a year long OEF combat Deployment (11B) You should totally try it! That being said, it is totally doable in every sense of the word. You will learn time management which is an extremely important skill to learn for both civilian/Military careers. Step up and serve your country man. It will put you waaaaay ahead of you’re civilian peers. Like it’s actually not even fucking funny. How bad do you want it?!
Tough question to be honest I have no clue. Not trying to bullshit but from what I know about medical school you would more than likely need to find a special program for that.

Great video!! I’m now going to enlist in the Natty Guard 🫡
Yes sir
Good video man, I'm going to MEPS in a couple weeks to take the asvab and enlist in for Kentucky National Guard 31B
Since I have a state job at a fortune 500 hospita full-time. This could work out for me because they could get float pool staff to fill in when I'm away. Just waiting on the air national guard recruiter. Thank you for the advice.
Joining the split option program, I'm currently reading a couple of algebra 1 books, asvab preps to pass the asvab test. I scored a 19 and the recruiter said I need a 31 to pass, wish me luck!
Was going to do that option, but life had other plans. Looking into the ng again, hows the split option gone?
I was scare but you motivated me to join
Nice editing I'm planning on joining soon I'm past the 25 mark but I'm in great shape know it will be hard but well aware I can do it good motivation
I think you would be great. Happy to help!

Is there a difference between army national guard and just national guard or is national guard an abbreviation?
ARMY NATIONAL GUARD , STATE & FEDERAL DUTIES ,
ARMY RESERVES. ARE. ONLY FEDERAL , GUARDSMEN & WOMEN TAKE BOTH REGULAR ARMY. BASIC TRAINING & A.I.T. , ADVANCE INDIVIDUAL TRAINING FOR ONES M.O.S. , MILITARY OCCUPATION SPECIALITY , ONES CHOSEN MILITARY UNITS PRIMARY JOB TITLE .
( AVIATION, INFANTRY , MILITARY INTELLIGENCE , ARMOR & MANY OTHER OCCUPATIONS ----- ALL DEPENDENT ON YOUR TEST SCORES . )
Crazy, I meet with a recruiter next week, it just kinda popped up and I decided to meet with him. I'm 9/10 gonna do it
I’m trying to get back in. I was in the Marines back in 2003, but they said I would still have to do basic. Guess I will go from being the young guy to the old guy. I’m 40, hoping to be in by 41. With an age waiver they will take you until 42. I also heard that number is 43 now. It wouldn’t surprise me though.
I have to take test soon. I’m so nervous
This might be a dumb question but can they help you get a full time civilian job?
Yes through Networking
Great video My Son plans on going and I am so nervous even though I am a single parent he’s been talking about it and I wanted to know about it and the way you explained it I feel a little bit more comfortable🤷🏽♀️
I just filled out my application, waiting for the recruiter to get back to me. Im nervous/excited to join so im glad i watched this too
Glad to help
I am 34 and in law enforcement and thinking of joining. Can’t decide
I suggest doing a lot of research. If you don't want to do the National Guard, I highly suggest the reserved. I've been researching the USCG & definitely wanna be active-duty for them. =)
I'm 16 finna be 17 in two months and after I graduate high school plan on joining medical combat field you got any suggestions
if your interested in national guard you can go the split option route and get a head start this summer as a 17 year old
I just started my journey in the national guard, I am going into it in medical. Trust me it’s worth it to go through this. Just contact a recruiter.
thaniks for the information man im thinking abt joining so I can get my life straight
Just joined 3 weeks ago. Next weekend is RSP. Shipping May 8th. Told my job I’ll be gone for basic. So got my request unpaid leave approved.
Wait so how does the pay work?
Which national guard branch help with natural disasters because that’s what I want to do I’m planning on joint when I’m 17 in 1 and a half years
I actually just came back from helping with a natural disaster, Army and Air National guard is your best bet
Do you HAVE to jump out a plane? I'd love to attend every weekend and do everything, except jump out a plane. Thanks.
Im looking into getting into the security field but i want to join the national guard also
I'm in security it's better to get the security job then join national guard that's what I'm doing so they can't take your job
THis was helpful. I have a few questions though.
Does the NG require you to pay for anything like your uniform and stuff or does it come free with being in the military?
What career did you choose, like were you an 11b infantryman or something else?
Late response but we get a clothing allowance to cover that
Thank you!
Thank you :)
Was AD for 10 years, been out for 1.5 and thinking about joining the Guard. How hard is it to get an AGR slot these days if you’re in the Guard?
@@oshdallas please where is the video on the SMP program?

I have a question?! I just want EMT school to be paid for and they called me to see if I was interested in going to the National Guard, do I have to stay with them and continue with them as in military service
Not sure what you mean but if you’re asking if they can pay for your schooling without being in the service, absolutely not.
If youre asking if you have to stay in past your contract, no you don’t have to. The training they give for 68W(combat medic) certifies you for emt , I believe. So it’s part of the initial training you go through after boot camp. All you have to do is 1.complete the training
And 2. Fulfill your contract.
I'm really late to the show here but I'm 32 and I'm finishing up my GED when I'm finished do you think I'm still able to join up?
Yep I believe you can join up to 35
absolutely guy, you can do it.
What’s the answer, I wanna know too
There’s a few key differences between the Guard and Reserves.

You can be attached to the texas national guard if you want to do college in texas. If you are wanting to do ROTC you can do this thing called SMP which means theyll pay for your college tuition while making a drill check.
Hi I have a Question… if I were to be a pilot outside of the military for example american, how flexible would that be with the guard ?

Ayy same
All the bct are the same training? National guard is the tougher than marine? Or equal?
No basic training is not the same. Even in the Army there is different basic training depending on your mos. For example infantry held at fort benning vs Jackson.
I think you mentioned it in the video but to clear up, can you go to airborne school as national guard?
Yes
Considering besides as my backup to West Point is Aggie corps along with national guard
Why do one…if you get paid more to do both as well as experience
Also man westpoint is not fun enjoy college because at the end of the day you still graduate as an officer
@@oshdallas so? Since when did god put us on here to enjoy crap? If you join the National guard in one state are you tied to that base or can you transfer to other bases out of state if you move?
Does not tie you down to one state if you want to go to another. The process is called IST (interstate transfer) where you can fill a slot in another state. Also you will find a majority of times that someone will also drill in a state they are not currently in!
@@oshdallas thanks

i have a question… does national guard get bonuses for enlisting? i already went to meps and everything. just waiting on my waiver then i’ll swear in. but idk if there are requirements in order to get a bonus.
Bonuses are for enlisted and in order to get them you would have to talk to a recruiter
