Lately I've been using the koah mid plus fatback 52'' and love it. I can control it with one hand in heavy current by pulling back against my shoulder. Just before the shot I push forward using both hands like you said. To me controlling the gun with one hand is a big advantage for clearing and holding on to rocks
@@KeyWestWaterman if able, please also include pole spears. Looking to put in the work training for free diving, as I'll be over in the abacos a bunch over the next few years. I am aware that you don’t really shout-out brands but I thought this might be something that you could comment on..I’m looking at the JBL line of guns, a short shaft for shallow water spearfishing or fishing in tight areas..what are your thoughts about JBL. I am just looking for your first thoughts, not a deep dive in JBL or other brands. Thanks for all the great videos. 👍😊 Model: JBL Woody Elite Custom. Any information would be helpful. 👍
I can’t get down there often enough and your dives keep my head in the blue water, thanks for that, and 😂 I catch myself watching with my head cocked up like when I’m down and looking through my mask 🤿 in swimming position 😂.
okay cool and I my last question is your reel line the same diameter and type of line as your dynemma that’s attached to the shaft. Because I see you have a snap swivel attaching your reel line to the shooting line.
Hi Aaron when you made/built them did u have to put any lead in them to get them to float/sink?? I think u said once that u like yr guns to be negative bouant????
Aloha from Hawaii, ever notice any difference in mono vs dyneema shooting line? Dyneema on the reef is obviously more durable and can be tied in a quick disconnect knot. I've been hearing lately that dyneema will slow down your shaft quicker compared to mono. Any quick thoughts? Also what diameter dyneema are you usually using for shooting line?
Very good video on your setups. I like your pragmatism and ingenuity lot. May I ask how come no Roller spearguns? I’m new to the sport. Spent a week in Kona using a pole spear and now looking to get a speargun. Something like a Pathos roller speargun.
don't have anything against them! never tried one, but i'm one of those guys that if I don't have a problem with something I don't change it. I don't wish I had more range, or less recoil. the two main selling points of a roller from my understanding.
I just got a riffe euro 90 it came with 2 wraps of dynema from neptonics I asked for that instead of mono when I was practicing in the pool it shoots all the wraps and wants more line from the reel I’d rather have 1 wrap for ease of getting it loaded to shoot again. Do your guns do that with one wrap ?
yes they do as well, it all depends on the gun a 90 is pretty small one wrap is very little range. the reason I don't like double wrap with a bigger reef gun is because there's way too much line left when you shoot allowing a fish to take the slack and often wrap up in the reef or get in a hole.
in my findings, grouper spawn the majority of the year to be honest, the biggest spawns however are in the winter and early spring. although I am no expert, I spend more time in the water than most
Hi Aaron I am interested in making a speargun similar to this. I think a video as to how you built such a speargun and what are some things specs you would like to change if you had to do it over would be beyond appreciated. Thank you for the amazing videos and best wishes to you.
Hey captain! Hope you are doing well, did you drill the hole on the black gun handle to put the clip? I'm thinking about doing the same with a Riffe handle, but I'm a little worried about damaging it.
its the amount of runs your line makes down and back from the line release to the line guide. and yes most reals have drag on them, although I like mine loose, I don't like a reel that locks down. my hand is my drag.

Just a question and an idea. Do you ever do lion fish derbies/rodeos? Could be a cool video catch/cook and possibly a type of charter idea. Just curious. Keep up the good work and great video! From CA 🤙
we shoot them when we see them, its pretty standard nowadays! there are so many there's no getting rid of them now! I appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching!

@@KeyWestWaterman I’ve been seeing fat hogs on the shallow coral heads around sugarloaf, there’s a few honey holes I don’t think i’ll reveal but like under 15ft i’ve seen some 18-19inchers
I don't use it because it can't be cut in a bad situation and too much drag. and I thought I did in this video but will mention it in an upcoming video

yup! have several koahs and I love them! I can easily shoot my guns with one hand but for the sake of accuracy I almost always shoot with two!

it is the same diameter yes, the swivel is to prevent twisting.
Technical question about the banana gun , two 28” 5/8 bands @ 3:1 or 200% for 120# x2 🤯
was that a question?
@@KeyWestWaterman yup

we add lead normally yes. I like to be very close to neutrally buoyant
Love your videos man, always great !
happy to hear that!
Do you tie the reel line (Dyneema) straight to the shaft, and if you do, do you crimp it to the shaft or just tie a knot?
I tie it straight to the shaft with a bowlin

I believe its 1.8, and it may but the difference is so subtle it probably couldn't even be detected in my opinion.

will do! thanks for watching from Aruba!!!
Aaron, I noticed in this video that you dont use a lead before the dynemaa, you use the dynemma as a lead?
Just want to clarify that.
Thanks!!
yea I use dynemaa as the shooting line.
@@KeyWestWaterman thank you so much, I just change mine, will be faster to reload with one loop only!

I like anything Shimano makes, but really depends what you plan on doing with it

What type of permit and is vms, call ins required?
no all my permits are for the South Atlantic, currently no VMS. but i'm sure its only a matter of time
Did not understand single wrap vs double. Really am lost about set up between reel and connection to spear. What keeps the reel from backlashing?
The reel has drag which keeps it from back lashing.

I use the Italy ones. They're made of graphite so they float they don't weigh anything

have u ever tried a pneumatic? why is so uncommon on the states ?
nope, started with wood and never needed a change so I've never tried.
bro is that an AR15 handle your using of your speargun??
yup! Neptonics systems makes them
Hey! How did you painted your gun?
they are stickers, then epoxy over it. if you're talking about the black gun I mixed graphite into the epoxy.
Did you buy those as a kit?
no piece by piece, although I think Neptonics sells kits

14 or 16 bands for a roballen 110 ?
Too many factors to consider to answer that blindly!
