  • Visual bike check / first ride in Dockton forest on my custom crackle-painted 1991 Kona Lava Dome, aka The LAVA DOOM.
I picked this bike up last year. I love the geo but was never big on Kona’s Hawaiian vibes. With tales of Sasquatch and strange Missing 411 cases, the woods that I ride here in western Washington can definitely carry a darker vibe and in my opinion there’s no better soundtrack for that than some doom or black metal and nothing shreds harder than an 80’s inspired crackle paint job.
Process: Started with a decent enough frame and fork that i scored for only $25.
Had it sandblasted and spent the better part of my summer weekends working on it.
1 coat of 2k epoxy primer.
1 coat of dark purple Montana Gold on the front half.
1 coat of medium purple Montana Gold on the rear half.
Black Montana crackle paint all over and then an absolute ton of 2k clearcoat/sanding sessions before a final 4 coats of clear.
It came out as good as i could’ve hoped and it rides super nice.

Mountain biking and mountain bikes have changed so much. My first MTB, in 1993, had no suspension. I just bought a new one with 120mm of travel, F/R, thinking it had a bunch of travel, only to find out it's considered a "short" travel bike these days. LOL.

I saw a 3rd like pop up as I was debating which snarky comment to make. Now I’m more concerned w who gave it that like.

I can always count on two likes- anything beyond that and we’re in uncharted waters
