Does anybody else realize that no other nobleperson has hugged a servant on this show? Not even Mary and Anna shared an embrace. Only Sybil was truly humble enough to convey emotion towards her servant that way because she truly, honestly saw Gwen as her equal.
It's not only about hugging servants, it's about showing affections in general. Those in upstairs hardly ever show affection to one another. They kiss in the cheek for greeting and for saying goodbye but that's the gist of it... but Sybil always shows affection to everyone that is why everybody loves her.
They rarely hug each other. Not even Cora and Robert hug a lot.
I am pretty sure Lord Grantham hugged the servant he kept kissing!
@@nathanielgreenwood4910 Nice one haha
Carson hugged mary after matthew died
WHO else caught Bates say, "amen" when Anna said, "she wants to keep it private, not secret, there's a difference!" Love Bates!
hahahahah I haven't noticed!
1:26
Oh so quiet it went under our noses!
I rewatched it to make sure i see him say it - *golden* - thanks for posting haha
I did..proof they had such similar values since beginning 😊
Years later when Gwen comes back to the house for lunch as a guest of Lady Painswick she was outed by Barrow as having once been a maid, she explains how Lady Sybil helped her get the job, gave her clothes to wear to the interview and took her there. Finally she says "........her kindness changed my life...." somehow those words have stuck with me. I pray too that my actions can positively impact someones life.
They got stuck in the mud on the way back.
I'll never understand why her character was done away with so early in the series. She was an incredible contrast to her bitches of sisters.
@@barbarat5729 it is stated in magazines that she wanted to leave to do other things
@@barbarat5729 She signed on to Game of Thrones; definitely the right choice, but Downton's loss.
@@janeathome6643 I believe Barbara was referring to Sybil and not Gwen
I love Anna standing up to O Brien every time! She's vicious with her retorts and puts O'Brien in her place (though she never stays there).
Anna standing for Gwen towards the other servants and Sybil standing for her towards society is everything.
The irony is that Rose Leslie is in actuality a noblewoman and she plays maid and wildling outcast in dramas...oh and she married a fellow aristocrat in real life, who also plays a bastard and an outcast in the same drama she's in...
its good to see posh twats slumming it for a change
@@Rustyshackleford1544 Getting paid loads to be on TV and do something you want to do is hardly slumming it!
@@Rustyshackleford1544 No need to be rude! everyone has their own struggles and hardships and slums it at some point
Toby oh shut up. People can’t help their ancestry or where they come from let alone who they fall in love with. She is an actress, doing what she loves because she loves it and is talented enough to play a diverse set of roles. Stop being petty
Eeemmm, Harington is hardly an aristocrat, as the son of a mere baronet, she is quite highest in the rank than he.
"No one hits the bullseye with the first arrow." My favorite line in this entire scene. Lady Sybil gave Gwen the confidence boost she needed. A guiding hand up the ladder of success.
It's true advice for even more most powerful people (Michelle Obama failed the Illinois Bar exam the first time, for example; Joe Biden ran for POTUS three times). I kept it in mind when I was interviewing for jobs years ago.
It was so weird watching her in Downton Abbey after watching her for the first time in Game of Thrones.
It was the reverse for me.
Kevin Darby I kept shouting at the scenes when she kept receiving rejections, “What are ye doin’, Ygritte!?! Shoot ‘em in the back with an arrow!”
I saw her first in GOT. So seeing her so 'modest' and shy is strange haha
I hardly recognize her having watched The Good Fight. What a fine actress too.
@@HouseBug26 Me too.
I’m addicted to these Downton Abbey short clips
I do love downton abbey ❤❤❤
I love Downton and I’m seeing the movie in 3 days! I’m binge watching the series!
Me too! They are a nice distraction during the day during lunch break.
The best show! I had seen all in one week.
Anna TRULY understands the meaning of 'loyalty' 😇
"You're dream is my dream now"
Lady Sybil was the best ❤😢
Oh and Sybil and Branson in the end 😍
Yes, it's such a kind thing to say.
7:12 - I love the way Anna says "where were you?". She's playing along with Gwen's "sick day" routine but she also wants to know what she's been up to! A great sister and friend :-)
One of the best characters, and also a lovely person in real life. When you see her as herself out of character,Joanna Frogett i is radiant.
Such a heart warming side story on Downton. Especially like when she revisits Downton years later and relays the story of Lady Sybil's help with her job interview. Sybil's kindness was a nice way to remember her.
Lady Sybil, "she's not like my sisters." lol great line such a great character, played so well.
Gwen was so humble upon her return to Downton but this time dining upstairs. She never sought vengeance on anyone downstairs her caused her stress. She was elegant and noble in her own right always.
Anna is such a true and good friend, standing up for her friend and being supportive and courageous.
God bless people like Lady Sybil...
reicirith Gwen Dawson is kind of very special lady as working hard alike i do everydays won’t be very easy as existly I love to watching good movies of Downton Abbe about very interesting those historical plus love in their serious actors. Keep it up as do Sachs of you can. Expect what’s about funniest movie of downton abbe bloopers or something alike mr. bean in somehow would be great .
reicirith That actress was so good next to Colin Farrell. Can't think of movie name.
“Odious woman.” Even Sybil knows how horrible O’Brien is!
What a perfect word to describe O'Brien.
I remember when Mrs. Hughes says something similar to - "A kinder soul never drew breath within those walls" and I agree. Sybil was the best of that lot.
I love how Anna and Sybil fight for Gwen, they both wanted their friend to be happy whatever the social conventions.
Lady Sybil was truly one of a kind, a GREAT lady. I am so glad that she stepped in to assist and support Gwen. Difficult to comprehend that no one believed in Gwen and her dreams except Anna, Bates, Tom and Sybil. What lovely people, all of them!
Aw Sybil's soul is beautiful. "Your dream is my dream now"
One of the ironies is that the actress playing the housemaid is actually an aristocrat in real life who was born in a castle. The actresses playing the daughters of the earl are actually the descendants of housemaids! The radical left wing teacher who went out with Branson was played by a cousin of the Queen. Lady Edith was played by an actress who was working as a doctor's receptionist before she was hired for Downton. I loved how Downton Abbey used actors and actresses that were often playing against their own background and did it so perfectly that no-one suspected. You'd never guess from the clips that 'Gwen' in real life is an aristocrat and 'Lady Sybil' is in real life the daughter of a teaching assistant.
That's fascinating. I look forward to reading up on this.
Love how Sybil says of O'Brien, "odious woman" under her breath. Sybil was so supportive.
she was so pure, great character and marvelous actress!
indeed....and to think she grew up in a scottish castle!! Love her humility!!
I always missed Gwen. She was so endearing. I was so happy to see Rose on Game of Thrones. I recognized her voice Immediately.
This video made me miss both Gwen and Lady Sybil.
Danilo Castro I feel exactly the same!
I'm watching The Good Fight and just realised who Mai Rendell is.
Me too. Gwen was my favorite downstairs until she left, and Sybil was my favorite upstairs character til she died. I was so incredibly pissed off when they killed off Sybil!😣
Oh this is great. Gwen's story line was one of my favorites. If the video had included the bit where she went back to Downton years later at Lady Rosamund's invitation, it would've been perfect. Thomas got a smack down from Lord Grantham for "outing" Gwen as one of their former maids.
I was waiting for that. Really, it would have been nicer.
I love "No one hits the target with the first arrow" because Ygritte was brilliant with a bow and arrow and always hit her target!
O'Brien leaving was the highlight of the show for me.
She's a great actress though
I almost cried when I saw Sybil! I forgot how much I missed her
Gosh these people are so interfering and nosy! Something as innocent as a typewriter has to go through so much scrutiny.
It's the year 1912, don't blame them..
Gwen was one of the loveliest characters on the show and Lady Sybil was her angel.
Love Mr. Bates....a quiet and subtle...amen
The kindness of Lady Sybil is moving!
I loved her! I loved the way she stood up and said I want to be a secretary!
Loved Gwen, loved Maia, loved Ygritte. Rose is a brilliant actor.
She stood out back then. Her northern accent was so convincing, I thought that's where she was from. Beautiful girl who's super talented. 🥰
Gwen is one of the sweetest characters in Downton Abbey ♡♡♡
Sybil is the epitome of what a noble should be.
I was so happy for Gwen. She rose in the ranks and married an Earl in season six. Lady Sybil was a beautiful kind soul.
She got married, but her husband was not an earl. He was not a lord of any kind.
@@finaoo1167 He worked in the goverment, right?
@@AnzuBrief - He ran a school for women. Gwen met him while she was working for "local government", but it's unclear whether he was also working for the same local government at the time. Regardless, neither of them worked for national government.
@@AnzuBrief Most government employees are not nobles.
Awww, the happy hug! Nosy O'Brien, I'm glad she went away. But the show lost it's heart when Sybil died.
Who do we stan? Mr Bates
Why do we stan him? BECAUSE HE'S MR BATES
Great storyline! It not only showed a character trying to better herself but the true kindness of a noblewoman who treats the help as her equal and aids her in every way to do so. So happy they did the follow-up so we would know what happened to Gwen. Great friendships with Anna and Lady Sybil!
I absolutely love Rose Leslie.
I really like her too... in interviews she always seems very down to earth and fun, although I got a bit of a shock the first time I heard her as she has a super posh accent in real life. I'm sure I read somewhere that her family are very aristocratic and she grew up in a castle!
Why weren't any scenes from where she is married and visited Downton with her Husband here?
I was about to watch the video because of that scene, but since it isn't there, bye, haha
They have only started to upload these clips for like less than a week now, hence we've only seen season 1 clips so far. Waiting for that scene to be uploaded later.
@@SwimmerPrince Ahhh makes sence but then they should have pointed out that it is a only first season best of
Joan Crawley ....VERRRY good question...;)!
Sterling Thomas was just bitter and somewhat jealous that someone who used to be a housemaid like Gwen could become someone of higher status (not aristocratic level but still a respectable profession). He was also unfriendly to Gwen most of the time when she was still a maid. And because Thomas was also considered for sacking at this point, he took it out on her.
Let's face it that typewriter inquisition was just a cheap attempt at disguising their jealousy when they realized she was trying to move up in life!
I loved it when Lady Sybil said, "your dream is my dream now"! I loved Sybil's kindness and zest for life and hated when she died not being able to see her daughter grow up with Sybil for a mother. Wouldn't that have been a beautiful thing?!
You have to admit, whoever played O’Brien was an outstanding actress… We all hated her so much!
Siobhan Finneran
Anna, Bates and Lady Sybil were always so REAL ❤
I loved her in Downton! Whenever someone says they were "born in the wrong era" show them this video!
Sita S what do you mean by that?
@@sirenia1241 That life was good back then only if you were born into the right family, fortune, race, religion, country and gender.
Sita S the same is true even today. It's in different forms and so we don't recognise it immediately but it's still there.
Oh god help us.
I love how at 1:31 Bates says Amen 😂
This show really opened my eyes to how deep the divide is between the classes. Even trying to move up in the world is so frowned up and controversial. It’s wild to me
was controversial. Not any more.
Lady Sybil: "Your dream is my dream now. I'll make it come true." Lovely and moving.
Love this- “Your dream is my dream now”. Lovely.
Preferably without so much cheek! Love Mrs. Hughes.
In later seasons the servants were allowed much more individuality. Noone would have had to hide a typewriter in season 3 or up.
The war did a lot of social change. That's probably why. Mr. Carson was against change always. I remember a scene when Mr. Carson and Lord Grantham were discussing the staff arrangements and one of the maids were getting married and the other were leaving to work in a shop which Mr. Carson did not understand.
Gwen is so likeable, also Sybil shading O'Brien 5:32
I always refer to her as that odious woman because of that scene
Odious woman... So accurate 😂
Every second of her is the best of her.
I loved her and was sad to see her leave.
This storyline makes me happy every time I see it.
I'm addicted to downton abbey ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Me 2
🇺🇸I’d completely forgot that Gwen, Sybil and Branson have a group hug!🇬🇧
Carson looks at her like he wants to shoot her for daring to improve herself. The thing that is obvious is that there is no privacy among the servants. They always want to know what is in letters or packages they receive almost like they are in prison and their mail gets censored.
Yeah the lack of boundaries is so tough to watch.
I loved Ms. Hughes's character she was strict but kind. We will celebrate after we finish today's work. I suppose she could have said "we could", "we might" but she said, "we will".
One of my favourites! And Sybil was my favourite 😪
Girl power. And I love how Bates almost lost it. ❤️
Wrong character.
Leslie is from a noble stock and she work in a drama as a servant. Good resume.
I wish I could like it again.
Why on earth would you leave out the bits when she returns and she tells them that it was Sybil who helped her??
"Nobody hits the bullseye with the first arrow."
Then she becomes Ygritte and hits many bullseyes.
Underrated comnent.
This was the best. All the ladies makin it happen that first season. I'd watch an entire series about Gwen's experiences as a secretary during WW1. But not until after we get the Gilded Age series Freakin Julian Fellowes has been promising for years!
It is interesting to me that while many people accuse the Aristocracy of keeping the working class suppressed, they fail to see that the working class also tried to keep their own people down and "in their place". There was class snobbery on both sides.
That was made abundantly clear they all looked at Gwen like she was insane for not wanting to be a housemaid for the rest of her life
Gwen should’ve stayed for the entire show! She was a great character!
Awww. I teared up at the end.
Lady sybil is the most beautiful than the other daughters
How stunning she looks when Gwen, calls her after she leaves when they're downstairs.
How stunning she looked when she turned around when Gwen, said my lady after Sybil, walked away downstairs.
Ardelia Nabila hell yeah
Gwen and Lady Sybil were the best. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for uploading Gwen's scenes ❤ I first saw her as Ygritte in Game of Thrones, one of my fave GoT characters. Then learned she's Gwen in DT. Amazing journey.
I love that show
One of the better tales of this series.
Just now realizing she was also on Downton Abby and later Games of Thrones..liked her on both series..
Anna is soooo lovely 😍😍
What I find funny about this whole subplot, is that it was O'Brians meddling that lead to Sybil finding out and help Gwen.
That "odious woman's" inability to mind her own business actually had positive ramifications for once.
Your dream is my dream. Beautiful
post the one when Gwen comes back to downton, it inspires me so much. thanks
It's interesting that Lady Sybil refers to Lord Grantham as "my father". Everyone else in the family calls him "His Lordship" when talking to others.
Ah, the youngest child has a special relationship with the dad especially if it's a daughter.
Also, she is part American.
She's more down to earth and laid back than Mary or Edith.
Gwen was in Game of Thrones as Ygritte. Sybil was in Misfits with Simon who played Ramsay in Game of Thrones (he also fought against Jon Snow in the show, Gwen's on and off screen partner). Coincidental and cool!
Using character names to make it less confusing!
I remember wanting to be a secretary. I thought that profession to be truly romantic. I realize now that to be a secretary is incredibly hard, and I would never be able to do it.
Who knew Gwen would wind up marrying Jon Snow from Game of Thrones?
I didn't realize that was Rose Leslie in the role. Wasn't it Lady Sybil who encouraged her character to improve herself so she could become something else other than a maid?
Yes, it was. Dear Sybil.
I can’t believe you didn’t know it was her 😂
@@ladyfoxwf1075 I didn't watch GoT. And i don't remember Rose being on Downton Abbey for that long.
May Loo Oh okay, sorry for assuming ☺️
@@ladyfoxwf1075 no need to apologize.
I didn’t even know Rose Leslie was in Downton Abbey. I only know her from Game of Thrones lol 😂.
I like Gwen
Please do one for Sybil or a story of Mary and Matthew 😍
Can we appreciate that the only person Cybil has ever said anything negative about is Obrien?
had I been Gwen I would have said "it's not your business. It belongs to my privacy ”
My heart aches for her as she explains she just wants to become a secretary and they trash her.
At 6:35: Sybil: "No one hits the bullseye with the first arrow." Wow, what an omen for Rose Leslie for her role as Ygritte on Game of Thrones!
Well now I can understand why Gwen didn’t want to visit the staff when she came back.... those that remained were the ones that didn’t believe in her....
"No one hits the bullseye with the first arrow..."
"My other character, Ygritte, does."
Sybil is a sweetheart❤❤
Pour One Out For Ygritte
She knows all, Jon Snow 😭😂
