  • Mr. and Mrs. Harding arrive at Downton, but Anna recognises Mrs. Harding and Greets her as Gwen, the former Downton housemaid who previously left to better herself. Barrow attempts to embarrass Gwen at the dinner table but fails to do so when the family realise that Gwen's success is down to the support of their darling, Sybil.
From Season 6 Episode 4: Lady Shackleton visits Downton, with her nephew, Henry Talbot. Elsewhere, Sargeant Willis asks Baxter to testify against the man whom she was involved with when she stole from her previous employer, she later agrees to do so in order to protect future female victims. Cora persuades Robert and Mary to lease Yew Tree farm to Mt. Mason. Anna is rushed to London to have surgery to save their baby. Mr. and Mrs. Carson return from their honeymoon, ready to move into their cottage.

The thing left unmentioned in this scene is that while Sybil did help Gwen so much, it was Gwen who took the initiative to get a typewriter and take the shorthand and typing courses in the first place. Maids didn't get much in the way of time off. They worked very long hours doing very physical work. Any maids who took additional courses were extraordinary already.

Right down to the exact same way they both try to defend their bad actions, with Barrow saying “I couldn’t have known she was planning to lie her way through” and Mary saying “How was I to know”. Plus they were both motivated by jealousy to try and ruin the other person’s happiness. No wonder Mary liked Barrow, they were both capable of the same cruelty.

One of the moving things here, towards the end, is that while Gwen i telling the story of her relationship with Sybil , and everyone is remembering what a lovely person she was, Barrow is standing looking both ashamed and deeply unhappy.
Sybil was not just kind to Gwen. She had worked with Thomas as an equal in every way. They had seen men with terrible injuries. They had supported a man who suicided. They had nursed Matthew Crawley, when he could not even put himself on the bed pan.

But, I beg you, WHY for heaven's sake?! Gwen didn't have anything to hide: She had fought on her own merits to push up her social position and she succeeded, that's all. And those aristocrats just had to take that for which it was, because times had to be changed, quite simply!
Oh, I LOVE this clip! I only regret the old scarecrow Violet wasn't there: That would have been marvellous!

When Sybil died and Mary said "she was the only person in the world who thought you and I were good people" that hit different.

I love these rare moments when Thomas tries to do something from a place of bitterness but ends up recieving gratitude for it. He made up what turned out to be a half-lie about Nanny West and neglecting the children to try and get her fired, and so Cora found out she actually deserved to be fired.

He received a tongue lashing not gratitude. Logical . But i laughed when Carson was called kind in the season he was at his worst and saying people were loyal to him when every one of his underlings left or planned to

Best scene in the series. It connects and summarizes so many relations and feelings. But a later moment belongs to it, with Grantham and Barrow.

This is one of the most touching scenes in all the Episodes of "Downton Abbey", and there are many. Sybil was the kindest, most gentle, soul written into the entire Series. This scene brought me to tears just thinking of Sybil's generous spirit.

Gwen rises in the world, but still used lower class "me" instead of "my". As in "That's how I got me first job in business." Well, I reckon' we bring that ole' stuff with us when we move along, I reckon'. Ain't no sense in puttin' on airs, if'n you knows what I mean.

She’s not an educated woman. She said so herself. She’s not going to learn a completely new way of speaking in just a few years.

MadAboutSaffron Red she probably has to code switch at work. Back then, speaking like that would unlikely land you a job as a secretary.

@@cynthiachengmintz672 , I agree. And I do think it possible. When I first went to work in downtown Chicago, 1980, after graduating HS, I met a lot of Black people, who would speak in a business-like English when doing business. But when they sat together in the lunch room. Do you remember that seen from the movie Airplane?

@@donaldbadowski290 I've never seen the movie. I didn't know what code switching was until I was in my 30s. I learned Cantonese first, but my default/main language is English and I speak English with family. I'm unsure if I code switch at all. I am not 100% with Hong Kong/Cantonese culture, often to the point that those FROM HK can tell I'm not "from there."
