Now we need a prequel of Violet's past more than ever!! it was enough drama with the Russian trip in 1874 and now this!...Perhaps it could go like Violet narrating her life to Mary before dying that way Maggie Smith can reprise her role and can give us those strong one-liners!

Sometimes what siblings need in order to get along is distance apart. With her living with Bertie, it gives them both space to do what they like without having the other constantly watching like a vulture.

I cannot concur. In the last season Mary was brutal to Edith. Nevertheless due to the distance between the sisters and Edith’s new social position Edith had the chance for personal growth and development so that she is no longer vulnerable to being bullied which balanced their relationship.

    • @grammatikaat4329

      @@Celisar1 I partly disagree.
Edith had good reason to be livid with Mary, but did show up for Mary's wedding to Henry at the very last minute and I think (if I remember correctly) this is where Edith tells Mary that one day, they will be the only ones to remember Downton and everyone who lived there, and that that is more important than all of their sisterly issues.
Yes, Mary was brutal to Edith, like she always was, but eventually, she did bring Bertie and Edith back together, with the help of Rosamond. Besides, Edith was often equally brutal to Mary. They were always fighting, being sarcastic and mean to each other all the time and sabotaging each other's lives, from the very beginning. Of course they were also manipulated by O'Brien, the first ladies' maid to Lady Crawley, but they both really didn't need that much encouragement.
I also think that Edith's real personal growth and development happened when she was editor of her magazine. I think she even talks about being bored in her new life in the 1st movie but I can't remember exactly.
Distance and the both of them being happy in their own lives probably díd make it a lot easier for them to get along.

A nice lady at the local library here in Las Vegas put this on reserve for me and I just finished watching it for the second time this afternoon. She's never watched any of Downton but says she's going to start soon. I emailed her this morning telling her to please start from the very beginning of Downton Abbey with the first season, first episode, as she would not be familiar with the characters. I told her that Downton Abbey, A New Era, begins with Tom's wedding. If she'd never watched any of Downton, she'd not know him and his connection to the Crawley family. I felt like the characters have become people in my life, not fictional characters. There are no superlatives in my vocabulary to describe how I feel about this movie and all the Downton franchise. The sets were so elaborate and well done. I can't imagine how much the customs cost for just the funeral possession near the end of the movie where everyone was outside. Julian Fellows is certainly a remarkable talent. If this is the end, I'll miss them all.

Being born in 1865 at the turn of the century that would make him 35, then add another 30 years and he would be 65 in 1930. If the show is mid thirties then the would be pushing 70. Oh man, this isn’t good, what’s going on??? Mary and Edith are getting along! Is this a bad omen? I hope it doesn’t mean I got to get along with my evil sister, Bloody Mary! And Lord Grantham, why does his face look like tanned leather that has been polished to a shiny glow? He looks like he has more foundation and makeup on, more so than than all the actresses combined. At least Michelle Dockery looks so healthy now with more meat on the bone

Used to love the series and the first movie… but, boy, this was a brutal waste of time…

This was horrible. The writing and acting devolved into a cheap ABC After School Special style of storyline. Such a disappointment.

A maudlin, sickening sentimental film. I was relieved when the dowager countess died.
