She was also a dim-witted mother in this case. Each of them sisters had their own qualities, as well as flaws. As lovable and sweet as Sybil was, she was also a daydreamer and a quixotic idealist. Both Mary and Edith were much more pragmatic women than Sybil, and pragmatism is something I value very much.
Don't forget that while Cora may have been of the American upper class, the family was newly rich and not that far removed from middle class. A breadth of life skills is generally considered desirable, and not all such skills are pleasant and most aren't that easy.
Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from A Place Beyond Courage by Elizabeth Chadwick: “Knowing how to knead dough or fashion pastry might not be essential to her education, but her mother let her do it, reasoning that a wife who had a broad knowledge of what went on in the domestic quarters would be better qualified to run a household than one who shut herself away in the bower and learned little but stitchery.”
In the American novel Little Women the mther character tells her daughters that it was very helpful for her to learn the basics of the kitchen. When she was rich she could run better the husehold, and when she was poor she could do things by herself. Maybe Cora read the book and was inspired by it

Who annoys you more O'Brian for eavesdropping or Carson for dry snitching because Sybil wanted to learn a freaking survival skill, in order to help others?????
If only Cora has given Edith a quarter of the love and attention she gave to Sybill. But I suppose, since Sybill is the daughter most like Cora, it's not surprising she was her mother's favourite
"What in wonderland do you call that?!?! I mean, I do not fully understand what you are trying to do mi'lady." It is quite amusing when Mrs. Patmore forgets who she's talking to and just whips out the insults. In this moment, she was the equalizer.
0:29 "Sometimes... it feels as if all the men I ever danced with are dead". It's such a poignant line and does manage to convey some of the utter wastefulness of a war that saw an entire generation go off to fight & die, from all classes of society.

Lady Sybil ♥️
I wish I could watch Downton Abbey for the first time again.
Thank you for uploading this scene, it's one of my favorites! Sybil was such a sweetheart.
It's so weird how Isobel's comment "What a terrible thing," could be taken as sarcasm now, but in this it sounds sincere. No judgments, language naturally changes over time, just found it interesting.
And everyone got broken hearted when the sweet soul left 😢
I love how happy Cora is that Sybil is learning how to do these kinds of things for herself.
I love Sybil! She was my favorite.
I “lived” for this theme music and its accompanying cinematography every Sunday evening when an episode of Downton Abbey was starting.
3:17 My favourite line of Sybil. Ugh is just too good.
Her voiceeeee ❤
I love too see this as well as they show the friendship between the family and the staff
I just teared up. I miss this show so much. 😢
One thing about Cora is that she loved all her daughters for who they were and not for who the world wanted them to be.
Just realised something; We never see Cora try Sybil's cake 😭😭😭
Sybil was so alike to Cora, refering to kindness, but Mary is very much like Robert, stupid, stunburn, and foolish , wise as a hard rock.
Who annoys you more O'Brian for eavesdropping or Carson for dry snitching because Sybil wanted to learn a freaking survival skill, in order to help others?????
That annoyance is always dampened by Cora's reaction. She remained the most compassionate character in the whole series.
Both
That’s a tough one 😆
Top socket or bottom socket?
@@xengar Carson. He's a chauvinist 🤣 He acts that way towards Mrs. Hughes too.
If only Cora has given Edith a quarter of the love and attention she gave to Sybill. But I suppose, since Sybill is the daughter most like Cora, it's not surprising she was her mother's favourite
because she was nice unlike her sisters I wouldnt blame someone not liking there daughters who are like marie and edith
Mrs Patmore throwing bare shade 😂
SYBIL était très attachante comme personnalité ... elle voulait être utile... elle voulait être dans le réel ... c'est courageux.
I like how Mrs. Patmore treats Sybil as one of her kitchen maids for a moment, then realizes whom she’s talking to, and tones herself down.
"What in wonderland do you call that?!?! I mean, I do not fully understand what you are trying to do mi'lady."
It is quite amusing when Mrs. Patmore forgets who she's talking to and just whips out the insults. In this moment, she was the equalizer.
That's so accurate. Mrs Patmore spontaneity is often the touch of common sense that trespass the assumptions in either upstairs or downstairs.
@@marianohellmuth7143 Unlike many of the servants, she seldom interacts with the family except occasionally with Cora to plan meals.
When Ms Pattmore corrected herself plss 😭😭
Sybil was my favorite.
One of the best scenes of Downtown Abby.
0:29 "Sometimes... it feels as if all the men I ever danced with are dead".
It's such a poignant line and does manage to convey some of the utter wastefulness of a war that saw an entire generation go off to fight & die, from all classes of society.
"What in wonderland do you call THAT?" Best line, period.
That cake could have been the most mangled looking thing ever and Cora and Robert would have loved it regardless.
One of my most favorite scenes! ♥
Sybil is an Angel!!!!!
What in wonderland do you call that?! Is one of my favourite lines from Mrs Padmore😂
Favorite scene out of all the seasons😍
❤️. Syibil was so LOVELY & GENUIN & FUNNY & DOWN TO EATH 💫
I find myself in soany of the characters in this show, the writing is superb, the casting of the actors is perfect, I think I find myself most in Mrs. Crawley here, she is outspoken but kind and seems to always fight for the little person and I LOVE her for it ❤️
She's my favorite sister and I was so mad that she wasn't around for the entire series ..grumble.
That was so sweet!
I love Cora so much in this scene I can hardly bear it.
I love how Mrs Patmore momentarily forgot she was talking to the daughter of her employer 😂 wish we got more of Cook Sybil
What in Wonderland do you call that? 😂😂😂😂😂😂
almost cried watching this
Love Isobel calling out O’Brien for lurking.
