Yes that 30 odd kg less makes all the difference. It’s just old and feels a tad more raw. The e92 is so much a better car it’s not even in question. The engine is so special and isn’t in 3-4 BMW’s. It’s on my in the e9x gen.
As an E92 M3 owner, yes the warm up time is by far the worst part of ownership. You learn to budget your time though, if I’m planning on driving somewhere just for a quick trip I start the car 15 minutes before and let it warm up in the lot before hopping in. Even then, sometimes not fully warm but warm enough to start driving it. Very annoying, looking into a remote start tbh but other than that warm up time it’s not a horrible daily. Just teaches you how to budget your time and plan ahead of things more than any other car I’ve owned.
Owned and tracked: E92 DCT civic, E90 6MT ZCP and E46 M3 SMG. I ended up with my E46 M3 SMG. Call me crazy. I just prefer lighter nimble car. E92/E90 felt heavy and they understeered. I just love E46's sexy curvy looks and inline 6 engine noise.
Sorry guys but you way off on this. Ive have owned both, so a couple of things as an owner.. 1) theres no difference in warm up times, both cars take a while to warm up. 2) you only drove on a certain type of road in your test, the road suited the bigger more powerful e92, however on a back road (b road) the 46 is a much better car. 3) the e92 is not an auto, its a dct, and its 7 speed, ive driven the manual 6 speed and own the dct model, the car/engine is must better suited to the 7 speed dct, and those rev matche downshifts you loved so much, you cant get the same with a manual even if your an ace at heal toe.
Also lads the whole cold start short journey thing is for every car. The e92 and e46 both take 10-60 oil so both ideally need to be warmed up fully but it’s not the end of the world as long as you drive it easy cold. They were designed to be driven it’s a mass produced car yes the engines in both are special but they’re not all out race cars. The exhaust in the e92 is a simple box mod and decat - both have hydraulic power steering. In a big manual guy and have a manual charged e92 but the dct is pretty sick and head and shoulders above the zf8 speed. Both are awesome cars if a good era if cars
I have both cars I love them both for different reasons. But the e46 feels like you could race is easier and love the e92 as well the look but not to race love the sound more than the 46 and both cars are amazing
This is a great way to put it I think. The E92 should be dailyable and great all around, but when I think of the E46 idk why but it’s gutted, rough, and made for the track. Perfect setup for a race car, whereas the E92 I think is more like BMW’s first hint that they were switching the M line to be more street friendly and daily driver friendly, while also offering amazing performance and driver feel. Both great cars but I think they’re made for slightly different purposes.
E92 M3 combined with DCT is just an amazing experience. Take the e93 version and drop the roof then you'll understand the meaning of orgasmic driving...😊
First off: nice video, thank you. One note on the power numbers. No way the E92 has 450hp. They pull maybe 390hp when they are fresh No way the E46 has 360hp. They can reach 360/370h with cams and an actual csl airbox Do us a service and dyno both, I would love to have that transparent in a video online
Keeps saying the e92 takes ages to warm up but so does the e46 so I don’t get the comment. I would have said it’s more to do with economy on the c8 over the flat 6. The v8 is so so thirsty it’s why my brother sold his. I can get 33mpg easy on long journeys in my e46. Be interesting to know mileage on both. Both cars look gorgeous. I prefer the oem look myself too. For looks and nimble handling you can’t beat the e46. And both engines need care with rod bearings and once done both reliable if maintained and serviced often.
I believe the owner said he gets around 16mpg with the V8 but it all depends on how you drive. I think the biggest thing to note is maintenance cost of the V8 is higher, but the sound of that thing is worth every penny in my opinion!
Petroholics, can please list out the exact modifications to the intake and exhaust on the E92? I think we are all curious how he achieved that incredible sound!
What is the song at start? I owned an e92 m3 for a month until rod bearing went. I now have an e46 m3. For me, the E92 is more of a muscle car which is really cool, but the engine reliability lets it down. The e46 is more of a pure sports car, that really encapsulates what BMW are. Both cool cars
E46 feels more lighter, E92 feels more smoother. When I’m making sharp turns on E46 I can feel the grip from the tire and everything on the steering wheel. E92 feels like I’m almost gliding or sliding when I’m making turn, definitely more comfortable.
If the e9x m3 engine is not getting to temp fast enough then your coolant thermostat is probably partially stuck open and needs to be replaced. Common problem on these cars and causes very long warm up time.
Looks to me like you're purely comparing the cars on noise alone. The e92 is a faster car and probably a better daily driver as its more refined...the e46 is much more raw experience.
Why do u say that? I had the E46 M3 back in the day because I couldn’t buy the newer one at the time (E92) and I loved it. A part of me wants to get another E46 but I think I want something new
Supercharged clubsport e92 manual owner here, driven many e46 and they are good but not as good as a z4m. E92 is better then them both - e46 is about 30kg lighter then an e92 hardly anything which shows how good the e92 is considering it’s got more cylinders and a more refined nicer built car. The e46 feels fragile and tbh the amount of issues the e46 has is not cool. I’ve had mine 7 years 4 years supercharged tracked it street raced it everything and it takes it in its stride. There’s only one road going v8 m3 ever. Plenty of 6 cylinders m3’s You won’t see 460hp,between 420-440 is what you’ll get
Your issues come from supercharging the engine, I’ve heard of a lot of people that once you start modding the engine the more unreliable is becomes because the car isn’t built for that type of power. Meaning you have to switch more parts, no modified car can be reliable to a point.
I own a 03 BMW e46 m3, only mods I did was a tune, headers and an exhaust. Been pretty reliable for me. Although i still turn it on and wait till the engine is warm to drive.
@@MotivateSnaps issues? I’ve had zero issues in 7 years. I track the car in fact I’m doing a track day today. All I’ve ever fixed is a rear diff seal. Dad’s been faultless. Supercharging is fine
@@RotrexfezST That sounds awesome brother, I’ve also had issues with the rear differential. Got it inspected and semi re conditioned but still makes some noise at times.

Hydraulic steering makes this generation along with lighter weight a more enjoyable drive.. speed is not everything. Secondly power delivery of a Natural aspirated is completely different.. each car has a unique feel, be it electric, turbo , supercharge or NA , straight six , V8 has a different feel.. I would invest in improving the stiffness with chassis bracing you see in the modern M3CS .. that would improve the feel , turn in and overall enjoyment
Ya might not like it since the power is less . you probably wouldn’t appreciate it as much tbh, if ya had the e46 first then ya might miss it . depends on your age and if you’ve driven cars from the 90’s - that’s just my opinion though not a fact lol
I have owned many BMW's and have always been a fan of the straight 6 sound. I never really liked the E92 for it's V8, especially with it's reliability issues. My cheap-ass M140i would leave that E92 in my dust, with 455bhp/634nm and a LOT less weight. My mate's daughter, her boyfriend has an E92 M3, the engine ate itself. It cost him 12 grand to have it rebuilt ! The car seemed too heavy, and just numb. The E46 is what the M car brand is all about.
E92 is reliable tbh and e92 m3 owners don’t buy the car for the speed we could care less if you can beat us in a race lol the e92 m3 is the best sounding engine bmw has ever made and it’s not really close
@@DjNikGnashers the straight 6 e46 with the csl air intake sounds great to me the e92 sounds just as good but better imo because I like the sounds of v8s just more power you get a louder deeper sound
