A quick freedive in the Gold Coast Seaway on the first day of Spring, and the political debate surrounding the Mayor's shaky plans to carve it all up, dredge it and build a massive cruise ship terminal.
This clip shows exactly WHY this treasure, the best inshore city dive site in the world needs to be SAVED NOW from the destruction, saved from the grossly irresponsible proposal of a cruise ship terminal going ahead.

It doesn't matter if they put this thing at The Spit, or at Wavebreak or anywhere in the broadwater it's going to be an absolute irreversible disaster for Gold Coast diving and snorkeling!
The world's best inshore city dive site on the Gold Coast in Queensland Australia is right now facing its biggest threat ever, with a real chance that it could be destroyed forever. The proposed monster cruise ship terminal construction and its up-keep (dredging and possible remaking of the rockwalls, will increase water turbidity (particles in the water) and heavily impact the established ecology that exists. The massive amount of constant dredging could see diving at this place rendered a thing of the past. This drastic land-grab by the private sector and local council will also bring with it the loss of wavebreak island and/or a substantial portion of The Spit, the loss of breeding habitat for marine species and heavily impact on this pristine aquatic area (home to over 450 marine species), devastate a large portion of a multi million dollar surfing industry and allow them to impose public access restrictions however they see fit, for the entire area - all in all it is a fast tracked scheme to claim land that belongs to all of us before we can get a chance to stop it. The local council and state government are trying hard to drop a thick blanket over any opposition to their plans in an attempt to appear that they have public support. This IS state controlled CROWN LAND that the council has no authority over. These changes would be irreversible and would damage this amazing and unique area, wiping out multiple multi-million dollar local industries and our best free, open, public spaces. ALL surfers need to unite now against these money driven forces that want to sell our free spaces, sell our crown land and in effect sell our surfbreak from right under our feet, to a Singaporean construction company - who will in turn replace it with massive churning ships, concrete and steel, facilities for the wealthy, massive hotels and pensioner-consuming casinos.
