- The coronavirus has devastated the airline industry. U.S. air travel has dropped 95% compared to last year and the number of flights scheduled globally is down by 63%. More than 16,000 of the world’s commercial aircraft are grounded. These planes can’t just sit idle, they need routine maintenance and a place to be stored. And when you suddenly have thousands of planes with nowhere to go it becomes a logistical nightmare. Here’s a look at how airlines parks thousands of planes and the outlook for the grounded fleet.

Simon Gills Lived near Victorville, California for 18 years. It was a great place until the late 1990’s when crime rates rose. Still, lots of nice people live there, including my family. And this is most heartbreaking! If only government would get out of the way! Hopefully this is temporary.

How to make a mini documentary

step 5 : have a soft female voice narrate the whole thing other than interviews

Thank you for posting. I am a USAF Veteran which my job was specialised in the Maintenance crew, we would inspect the aircraft and various equipment. And this job/career I had does well in the civilian world too. So I can imagine my previous career will be busy with inspections on these many aircraft.

Yes, that's normal. You don't just get refunds by your will. There are due dates and cancellation fees for those.
Paid $2100 for trip to Mexico, Air Transat a holiday carrier up in Canada cancelled our trip and refused to give us a refund. I have been fighting with the airline, Expedia, the agent and the credit card company to no avail. Offering a travel voucher for when things go back to normal. By the time things go back to normal, they won’t be in business. If Mr. Buffet bailed on all his airline stocks, you know it has to be bad.

If for whatever reason they're unable to fulfill that it's their legal obligation to refund your money and not simply give you credit for a future flight. That's how service-for-funds works. You don't provide the service when guaranteed you don't get to keep the funds.
Call your bank. Tell them they cancel on you and are refusing on giving you a full refund. They should be able to take care of it

Because it takes into account a unit of measurement a larger majority of the population can relate to and visualize. Just giving the pure measurements with no reference doesn't convey quite the amount of space these planes take up being grounded.

pretty fascinating. i always wish there was a live cam network at major airports like earthcam has at other locations. i would always be interested in watching airport operations.

I have been reading about this from several reports and publications. The way companies are going to be affected and the changes “they’ll have to make” to stay afloat is ridiculous. Bummer as I was hoping to do some traveling aboard this year.
They gonna cut cost in maintenance and I'm gonna predict an increase in air incident after all of this is over.
Yeah unlikely the cost of getting caught out on a maintenance violation is far too high to save the amount of money their saving, what they are doing right now is just swaping planes instead of buying parts
Airlines have learned the hard way many times that maintenance cost cutting is not the way to go.

Welcome to CNBC land - supirsed they didn't through in a couple of anonymous sources that don't exist.
The idea may have been to show a guestimate of what that many planes in the air would look like if they could be wing to wing without compromising safety since most people have some idea how large the USA is. If the video were by Russians they would making a comparison to the geographical area of Russia.

Yes! At least it is a Yes in the Australia Alicespring airfield. My airline company needs to to pay 3% - 6% extra to park near to the engineering bay. So our company decides to only park the more valuable planes and those require more maintenances to be near to the engineering bay.
Having worked loading and manvouring planes, the slot / space choice and order would be charged for! Probably in the order of 10,000s of thousands, as well as a premium for the better slots.

737 Max is now definitively toast.
I think more likely that the older planes will be permanently retired and the 737 MAX will come into service to replace them as demand returns, assuming of course that they get their re-certification, which most expect they will. The MAX and the newer planes in general are much cheaper to operate.
If Boeing was smart, they'd spend this time fixing the issues that grounded the MAX and convince Southwest to fly them again as cargo-only flights to accelerate proof of airworthiness

To be honest I've been wondering about this for a while. Honestly, I'm hoping that the airlines are taking this opportunity to do that maintenance that they would usually try to squeeze in to their tight schedules, as well as the parking maintenance.
The poor airlines, if only they could have prevented this by not spending 97% of their budget on stock buybacks, we need to save those poor moguls!

What do you know about business and investments? If you have much more spare cash than you need to operate the business and you have no investment opportunities that outperform share buyback in terms of returns for shareholders, you should return cash back to shareholders through either dividend or share buyback instead of storing it under the mattress. Nobody was expecting a global pandemic that would lead to global lockdown, so it's low to blame airlines for not being prepared.

@@hubsan1489 You see this is the part that doesnt make sense. Those airplanes parked in the desert, I'm not sure if the desert has any facility or resources to initiate any decent maintenance. I just never imagine myself seeing in-service airplanes rolling on bumpy dusty dirty sandy road.

Sounds like we need an innovative way to turn some of the retiring planes into living space, apartments, restaurants, storage (especially for dry weather climates like Nevada, Arizona). Scrapping seems like the least efficient option.

Just imagine the amount of fuel everyday that the aviation industry consumes. Cruise ships and Aviation being for the most part offline is tremendously helping our ozone layer and environment recover.
It definitely contributes but the truth is it Aviation accounts for only 2% of emissions, it's a lot more efficient than cars
Actually, heavy industry has a much bigger impact on the environment than aviation. Oil factories, coal mining etc....

There's specific processes and procedures for bringing stored aircraft back into service. Also demand will return very slowly so airlines will be bringing aircraft back a few at a time, plenty of time to do those checks properly.

I saw on another channel Ryanair is flying their planes every 4 days to avoid storing their planes. Its not good for the environment to fly planes around but its cheaper than maintainingand storing planles for them.

@@zampieritto IF people are willing to pay 20 dollars more for a ticket then bag fees will go away, the problem is that people consistently choose the ticket that includes less for a lower cost, the same reason pitch on aircraft have gone down
Nobody should be flying that much anyway.
If a plane can carry the Space Shuttle, it can carry my one or two extra bags for free
they are grounded because the virus, not because of you complaining about the bag fees. airlines will always got customers no matter how pricey they are.
