Absolutely true. Companies are making candidates go through a ridiculous hiring process. Not only that, even if you are very experienced the majority of your applications will not even be seen because whenever you apply the company has to go through 500 or even 1000 applicants before you. This takes months.
This is honestly an excellent video - I’ve digested so much job content in the past few months and this is so succinct and clear. I’m 100% pulling the 4VF for my search.

Sometimes I think the employer is looking for that unicorn, no matter how much experience you have. They may not even know what they need, especially when creating new departments. As for an emergency fund, it can take over 6 months and this hurts when you are 55+ because it eats into your retirement.
I have experience as a PMM & Growth Marketing Manager & have made it to the final round interview 43 mf times since April of 2022. This doesn't even include how many times i've made it to the pre-final round & then cut. like 4-9 rounds each, project that takes 3-8 hours per role, and having an average of 3-5 interviews per day.. since APRIL. This market is fucking killing me. im just here to vent bc im just trying to research anything new I don't know.
I'm very sorry to hear this! That's a ton of of hours dedicated to the search and it's definitely discouraging. Have you ever done sessions with a coach to see if there are any ways to improve your final round interview skills?

As soon as the money ceased to be "free," implying a zero interest rate, the entire IT circus collapsed. Now, you might have to wait another 10-20 years, if you're lucky, and hope that AI tooling does not screw up your plans.
Better off learning to be a plumber. You can go make 200 grand a year working for yourself and do people's shitters ever quit getting clogged? Hell no! Job Security!
I managed to clear the trifecta last year and got a couple of offers. Unfortunately, those offers were 16/hr..... I work as a security guard making 22/hr and sadly I just can't take that kind of pay cut for the CHANCE of maybe moving into administration.
Great video, and I have one question: what if there are intellectual property concerns with revealing the proprietary work you did with a company? I certainly talk in a Loom about my previous work, showing a very few lines of code, but I can't put the work in my portfolio because I want only that company to have the benefit of the work. If that puts me at a disadvantage, so be it. Is there any other way I can finesse that?
That’s a bit challenging for sure and depends on whether it’s public and user facing vs internal / system oriented. I would say that if it’s publicly available and usable (anyone can see and use the feature) then it’s worthwhile to highly on a portfolio. But if it’s behind the scenes / logic based, then exclude it. I would definitely err on the side of caution!

I'm going to collect unemployment that is better in my state than most states and chill for about 6 months.
Still keep looking for a new job during this time. Lots of companies are cutting people who have more than a few months of "gaps" in their resumes. It's deplorable.

Do upskill with latest tech meanwhile though. Companies always prefer folks with handson experience.. I do a lot of hiring and cannot understand what people do when they cannot talk about a good handson experience ( at work or at home tinkering by themselves )
The IT job is over for Americans, they might as well have a sign on the door "No Americans". Now with Devin is here this is not a job any more. Ask yourself would a real job like truck driver or nurse have to do any of the ridiculous stuff he says to do? NO
A majority of tech jobs are being offshored. Americans are left to resort to burger flipping jobs instead.
Im from India & in past 10 years, have been associated with service based firms, consulting & currently product based company. What I observed was US MNCs are either preferring temporary roles or critical roles to be part of their soil & remaining just thrown to Indian offshores GCCs or service based firms. I feel if Americans can put their head down & work hard, there are really better easy opportunities to grab which are difficult for a migrant workers due to visa complications.
@NM-tk4kc Bro, before giving Gyan to Americans on what to do.. if we Indians in India don't work hard, we will become irrelevant in another 5 years. Innumerable inventions came from America in the last 20 years and 0 came from India. Don't count on cheap replaceable low quality Indian labor to exist forever l.

2:10 I find it interesting the nasdaq 100 is up almost 50% for 2023, yet there were a ton of layoffs.
When a company lays people off, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re doing badly. They may cut employee headcount and it ends up only positively improving their profitability, which the market views favorably. A good reminder that companies are not looking out for their employees; they’re looking out for their shareholders.

About to graduate college as a cs major and math minor. I’m literally so uncomfortable with the future of the economy and my job security in the future
There's definitely things you can do to set yourself up for success! 1. Start networking heavily with folks within the tech industry (use your college alumni network). 2. Create a portfolio of projects / case studies that you can send around when you network. 3. Become *amazing* at interviewing/live coding/system design. Practice a ton, out loud, and preferably with a coach. If you dedicate time with the right strategy, I'm confident it'll increase your chances at landing an offer!

Graduated college in may with a CS degree. Cannot, for the life of me, even land an interview anymore. My resume has been looked over by professionals, cover letter has been reviewed, I’ve learned new skills and gotten a few certifications. Nothing seems to help. I don’t get it.

Most people I've seen say what you're saying have just been clicking apply assuming that their CS degree is an automatic ticket to a 6 figure job.
If you have experience in one area, try to hone in on that. I did an internship from April 2022 - February 2023 using laravel (a php framework) and got a job at a credit union working on their laravel and php backend with very basic frontend. I’m really not the best programmer, but I realized quickly that I do have an opportunity to specialize in something. If a company needs someone with your specialty where they can pay you cheaply (since you’re entry level), it’ll be a lot easier. Good luck

Too bad that most people can't really work on their personal projects or learn new skills, if they don't have the leftover time to do so, outside of commuting, self-care, other chores, errands, and sleep.

I recently got into college and I’m still wondering if getting a CS degree is worth it or not. Just from how the job market is right now and what people are saying, it’s becoming more and more discouraging.
Congratulations! I would strongly encourage you to get a CS degree. Knowing how to build software is one of the most valuable skills you could have and as companies continue to adopt technology, there will be a strong need for technical team members. There’s currently 131,000 software engineering and 8,600 product openings on LinkedIn so there’s still a bunch of openings.

There are plenty of tech jobs and if you have experience not much has changed, other than ai is a new tool.
Interviewing has always been competitive, that’s normal. And the job cuts were mostly because of over hiring during the pandemic. And it was mostly the large tech companies . It’s normal cuts we’re going to happen.
The economy is doing well now and all projections are above average hiring accross the tech sector. That’s through 2032.
You have to remember that every medium and large company needs tech staff to run their infrastructure, build and manage their applications . That’s not going to change.
RUclipsrs have realized the cuts are a trending topic, so they are making doom and gloom videos. But, it’s not reality for the most part.
It’s a total and utter car crash here in the U.K. thanks Tories.
