    I have a question, what happens to the potential difference in a parallel circuit containing branches with components of different resistances?

      it remains same oon parallel

    In theory, u should connect a fixed resistor in series with the cell. why didnt u do that or is it not required ?

      No, I meant the one I series with the cell.

      I believe it is to not cause any damage to the cell as it would heat up the battery which could (a) skew results by a changing emf (b) cell/battery could explode due to increasing temperatures.
