    I really enjoyed your video and it has motivated me to continue to be innovative when it comes to thematic learning. I have been teaching via thematic units throughout my teaching career. I also strongly believe that there is value in the linear progression of subject specific content within the curriculum. I find a balanced approach is necessary to ensure children are inspired with their learning but also achieve the skills/knowledge needed within the limited time they have in a school. My next topic is Castles and Knights, I would appreciate any ideas. Many thanks. :-)

      @LearningLifeMB  3 года назад +1

      Thank you for your thoughts and comments. I know what you mean about a balanced approach. It is hard when you do have limited time in school. Castles and Knights sounds like fun! I would definitely go for designing castles or building them. I remember making marshmallow catapults out of milk cartons when I had a class of mostly boys and they loved it. Have a "Knight School' and each child can name themself, design their own shield, and together they can come up with their own code of conduct (very important for Knights). Not knowing the age of the children, I can't fully recommend any books, but I know that there are some great ones out there on knights, esp when it comes to fighting dragons! If the weather is nice, I would make forts outside and play "capture the flag" (knights in teams of course). Those are a few ideas off the top of my head. I am sure many more will pop into my head as I go about the rest of my day. Sounds like a great unit. I would love to teach something along those lines.

    I really appreciate and enjoy your video and it is really motivated. Is holistic approach and to thematic approach same strategy?

    • @LearningLifeMB
      @LearningLifeMB  Год назад

      The terms holistic and thematic can be used interchangeably. Though I tend to say I have a holistic approach to my girls' education (meaning we do a wide variety and incorporate everything) but I'll also do thematic studies, meaning we pick a theme (like dinosaurs) and all lessons are about them. I hope that helps.

    I wish I had had a teacher like you growing up!
    I would love to do this with my son. He is a teen and loves ants. Other than incorporating Geography (Where different species lived), do you have any other ideas? Or good unit studies/curriculums evolving around ants? Also, he is amazing at science!
    For my daughter, she isn't as focused in on anything particular. She doesn't exactly enjoy learning anything nor does she get stuck on any one subject. She's more about getting everything done quickly (not deep dives). She is in middle school & is constantly listening to music.
    Curriculums, unit studies, or ideas?

    • @LearningLifeMB
      @LearningLifeMB  3 месяца назад

      Thank you for your comment.
      For your son - check out Teachers Pay Teachers. You can find some good ant unit studies on there for really low cost. There will also be some other great science units. If I were to do one, I would look at ants around the world, the different kinds of ants and how they function, comparisons between different ants, how they are important to the eco-system and what would happen if we didn't have ants.
      For your daughter, maybe a way to get her involved is to do a unit study on music. What are the different styles of music? How did we end up with rhythms and blues/jazz/hip hop/ etc.? Music around the world - instruments, style, etc. How does music make you feel? How can we incorporate music and art? Something like that.

      Thank you for your comment! If you have 40 year old B2 learners.... Topics that are good are hobbies, jobs/careers, holidays and public days. You can easily do something around the theme you are learning....so if you are doing shopping, you can do a theme about foods around the world.

    Hi, I just watch your video and really love the way you make it easy to understand about Thematic learning. My topic is on insects how can I put together a curriculum with that topic?

    • @LearningLifeMB
      @LearningLifeMB  2 года назад

      When it comes to insects you could have a lot of fun. What age group?
      Find picture books/stories about insects, go on a nature walk and see what you can find. Research different insects in different countries. What are the weirdest insects out there? Do artwork where you draw/paint insects, or make them with different craft supplies. If younger grades, have all your math have to do with counting, sorting, grouping insects. You could make "Ants on a log" - celery sticks with peanut butter (or non allergy nut butter) and raisins, or another fun item (just google search "insect snacks for kids" or something similar). Write stories about the insects in your yard - or "If I had a pet insect". Does this help? I hope so. But feel free to reply with the age of the class and I may be able to be more specific. Don't forget to go to a nature museum or something similar if you can.

    Hi! I love your video ❤️ I am a newly qualified teacher in England and teaching Year 1 (6-7 year olds) and wanting to do this with a beach theme maybe - I just don’t know how I would incorporate maths into this and I was wondering if you have any ideas ☺️

    • @LearningLifeMB
      @LearningLifeMB  4 года назад +4

      Hi there. Thank you for your comment. If you are going to incorporate math into a beach theme, why not count shells or fish or any other sea creatures you might see at a beach. You could have trays of sand and bury shapes to be found, or small plastic fish. Make a fishing bucket, where you have fish with numbers written on them and magnets attached and have fishing poles with magnets. When your students work out the sum, they have to try and catch the fish in the bucket with the correct answer. I hope those ideas might help. I have more but don't want to inundate you.

    That was an inspiring video! Thank you for sharing it! I am a preservice teacher and I have just learn about this approach. I am confusing little bit about weather we have to focus on achieving one instructional objective within the different disciplines or we have to establish different objectives for each discipline while applying the thematic learning?

    • @LearningLifeMB
      @LearningLifeMB  2 года назад +1

      Sorry about the delay. For me, when I am using the thematic approach I usually have one key instructional objective that can apply across the subjects. I am also aware of the skills required in English or Math, etc. If you tried to have an instructional objective for all disciplines, you would spend more time working out what they are. I tend to do an overarching one, for example: The children will learn each part of the life cycle of the butterfly and will be able to communicate the different stages. This will be done through reading, research, exploration in nature, observation and collaborative communication.
      Does that help?

    I love thematic teaching and learning,! Loved your video. Could you please tell me if a thematic curriculum or cross-curriculum can be fruitful for secondary school students and college students as well and to what extent if you have experienced it? Thank you

    • @LearningLifeMB
      @LearningLifeMB  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for your comment. I do think that you can do thematic curriculum for secondary and college, but sadly most schools are not set up to do that. They tend to keep every class to its subject. I experienced it a bit in college when I was doing my teacher's training because they wanted us to see how subjects can work together. It would take teachers working together to pull it off in upper levels....but you could combine Geography (pick a country), history (learn the history of the country), science and tech (have they had any technological or medical advancements in this country?), English/literature (read stories and poems from authors of this country or stories about this country), foreign language (learn the language of this country).Does that help?

    • @themuhammadanlight786
      @themuhammadanlight786 2 года назад

      thank you for your reply :) It has given me hope to continue my journey of designing a thematic curriculum. I do understand it's a lot of hard work considering the distribution of collected content on a single theme among different grades etc, but the dream is so fascinating that the only option now is to turn it into a reality! Have a good day.

    Hi I really enjoyed your video. I am currently doing a teacher training course in which I have to make Thematic project for Primary Class on the following two topics. tropical rainforest and Egypt - the land of Pharaohs. I want to know how to integrate it with other subjects . Also how can it be integrated with music

    • @LearningLifeMB
      @LearningLifeMB  2 года назад +2

      Hi there. Thank you for your comment. Here are some ideas for you.
      Tropical Rainforest:
      - what animals can you find in the rainforest? what do they look like? sound like? etc. (science)
      - the ecosystem of the rainforest (science)
      - where you find rainforests in the world, what countries have rainforests (social studies)
      - math: you can have some fun sheets with finding animals, or if it is an older class you can incorporate calculations on size of the rainforest or what would happen if we keep cutting down trees
      - music: you could explore bird sounds and then try to recreate them with different instruments. Depending on which country you might focus on with the rainforest, you could make an instrument from that area or listen to music from that region
      - do rainforest paintings with watercolor
      Egypt:
      - science and tech: explore the inventions of the ancient Egyptians (paper, makeup, etc)
      - Mummies and Pyramids: history
      - make your own mummy (using clay for the body and then wrapping in strips of cloth)
      - writing in hieroglyphs
      - music: study instruments of modern and ancient Egypt. Make some from household items
      - art: paint on papyrus
      - cooking: try different foods ancient egyptians liked to eat - dates, figs, lentils, etc. Make ancient egpytian emmer bread (aka tomb bread)
      I hope those ideas help. These are just a few I came up with in a few minutes. Let me know if you need more.
