- Many schools across the country are exploring competency-based education (CBE) as a pathway for transforming the school experience. In this course, instructor Justin Reich and the MIT Teaching Systems Lab team will help you develop an understanding of the characteristic elements of CBE and how schools are implementing it.
In this video, instructor Justin Reich, Director of the Teaching Systems Lab and faculty member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), explains what competency-based education (CBE) is by presenting some characteristic elements and considering aspects that are especially variable.
This is a video segment from the Teaching Systems Lab's massive open online course "Competency-Based Education: The Why, What, and How".
So many teachers are still struugling with the approaches of Competence Based Learning. Big up from Uganda
2:18 This is why the majority of people suck at math, classes keep on moving forward on more advance concepts when some students haven't have time to master the fundementals.
Clear goals and objectives are truly well defined of CBE
I was blown away by the affirmation that nobody really has the rule on what CBE is. As a professional educator I consider there are some subjects which cannot follow a CBE approach, and other where you must really think what is you want your students to learn, because under the CBE strategy the quantity of the content is less than thatyou can achieve in the traditional method. Sts will learn it, for sure, but you must be aware they will only master specific areas of your subject. Hence, Finland allows students to actually create the year's content and plans. Thank you for this post.
Pick out characters in a Nobel, a setting and the plot of a particular novel or a play.
Would competency based learning work in a philosophy class??
Very helpful. Would like to explore more about CBE
This is a very short and clear video on this critical topic.
Exactly..
Yeah this is the way my school is
the four pillars of learning as applied to tvet competency based training and standards
The number one educational institution in CBE is called Western Governors University.
Competency based approach in teaching literature
Gives a great insight to CBE

Just to be clear...Are you associated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in any way? Or what does MIT in your name stand for?
Very informative
I real like this video, I think there is more to learn about the CBE
Indeed there is a lot to learn
Thanks you
Hi, what does it mean if I’ve got a Competence Based Qualification?
Wait...isn't competencies basically another word for standards? And the strategies for students to become competent are the outcomes or objectives? So is CBE not the same as SBC ( Standards Based Curriculum ) and OBE ( Outcomes Based Education)?
Yes, there is not collision. That are same
Nice Video, I have one question only what is Competency Based Teaching?
Hi Louis, Competency-Based Education can mean different things to different people and contexts. One of the reasons why we made our online course Competency-Based Education: The Why, What, and How of which this video is an excerpt of, is to explore all of those different contexts. I need books related to the topic

I prefer traditional education. IT WORKED.
I can almost imagine a mechanical, electrical, aeronautical or materials engineer having become so out of choosing what to study and what not during their university years...
-"Dude! You didn't insulate the Columbia Space Shuttle properly!!"
"Look man, back in my university years I chose not to study thermodynamics or transport phenomena. That's why I am an aeronautical engineer with a major in transgender studies and emotional intelligence"...
HA HA HA HA...
