  • A look at how our spring is shaping up at the farm. Peonies are up but placement is terrible at best! haha We transplant peonies, straighten some rows, give you an update on the tulips and our "new" slogan! haha

That much of a slope - terracing the land would be ideal & mitigate the excess of water in the soil. I used to do laser land leveling for irrigation of crops in Arizona.
Love the videos! Your barn reminds me of the barn in my childhood in Massachusetts.
Blessings for a successful season! ☮️🌿

Have you considered doing the no till method? Put lots of cardboard down with compost to prep beds for next year? It will also smother out the weeds and be much easier.

Yes but our soil needs to be tilled to begin... its literally clay with no air or drainage and little organic matter. I hope to move to low-till/no till.. But as most low-till farms, we have to work the soil a bit here... Cover cropping and tarps take quite a bit of time but I hope to expand using that method every year.

“Thank you for being concerned with my fly!!” Hahahaha 🤣. I laughed out loud for real!!
I totally understand the grouchiness. You work your butt off planting and anxiously wait for the fruits of your labor.. then the Johnson Grass… or Pokeweed.. or whatever just bullies it’s way in the garden and grows three times faster than your flowers. And then you realize 25% of your plants died. So frustrating 🤦🏻‍♀️. Just be patient… it will take a while to get the space the way you want. Break the whole area up in zones and work a zone a week. Don’t bite off more area than you can handle. Cover the future project areas in cardboard and wood chips.

You really need some equipment to make your job easier. That is some miserable groudn to work by shovel.
Even a little skid steer would be such a big help spreading compost and much

We do but we also have to budget for them.... Trust me I'd LOVE a tractor... I NEED one but we can quite commit to one yet financially. Soon I hope!

Sometimes I think plants actually move. I know that sounds crazy but when you were talking about your Peony's it made me think of it. I came across a few plants that are quite a distance from their markers. So maybe soil shifts? I know we had another wet winter following a wet summer and fall. Then spring brought more flooded yard. I'm frankly amazed all my plants didn't wash away.

I believe it! Def has happened.... I think maybe air pockets in the soil too can shift plants and of course erosion!

Omg not to make fun of Brian but I really cracked up when he fell because your response was “ your flys down” it was a comedy in the making! Don’t fret the small stuff nothing has to be perfect. Rent a tractor and work the soil and make sure the drainage is great! You can probably get a big truck of compost for a fair price. Get the structure right and everything will go well. I don’t think the soil is bad it was farmland and usually it the most fertile soil. You got this👍😎❤️❤️❤️

Just curious. Is there a reason you don’t choose to do raised beds until you get the land the way you really want it?

Soil and wood cost... We're trying to just limit the expenses for now until our larger renovations are complete. :-)

I was thinking, do you have free chip drop where you're at? If so, you could use that to make your beds, let it sit and decompose, and improve your soil. You've come along way though so hang in there. Your ideas will materialize soon enough 😊
