Can XDefiant Actually KILL COD?

XDefiant has positioned itself as a direct competitor to Call of Duty. In doing so, it stands to take players away from what is already "dying" franchise. With the substantial amount of players lost over the past few months, declining popularity of warzone and now the soon to be released, free-to-play, BETTER version of call of duty releasing in the near future with NO SBMM. We seek to answer the question: Can XDefiant actually KILL COD?
The Xdefiant closed beta ended yesterday and in my opinion it has the makings of a very good arcade shooter. It obviously has a lot of issues as well that will hopefully get ironed out before it’s full launch but for what was an ACTUAL BETA, it got me quite excited for the future.
Now the thing with this game is it is evidently inspired by call of duty, and built to be a direct competitor to it. To answer the question “Can xdefiant actually kill call of duty”, no it can't. But that DOESNT MEAN it won’t be successful. And what it will do to COD, will be a LOT BETTER than killing it.
Call of duty is so big, mainstream, and so successful that we’ve seen it neglect its most loyal fanbase for the past few years and it is STILL the best selling video game almost every single year. Even if there is another year where it shits the bed like it did with infinite warfare, it can still release a remastered cod bundled alongside it to sell millions of copies. So at this point Xdefiant can’t kill cod because, only COD can kill COD.
But, that’s kind of what it’s been doing. Slowly. Warzone 2 and MW2 despite still being one of the biggest games in the world has seen a sharp decline in the amount of active players largely because they don’t listen or communicate with the community, they neglect their game, and simultaneously try and swindle every penny they can out of their consumers .
Xdefiant although it won’t KILL cod, what it will do is a lot better. with the amount of support this game is getting from both the community AND the devs. It is aligning itself to be a DIRECT competitor to COD. Something that to be honest we have never seen. Call of duty has ALWAYS had a monopoly of the first person arena, arcade shooter genre. The closest we’ve ever gotten to a direct competitor is battlefield and that always fails to deliver. Other games like overwatch, CSGO, siege. Although they’re popular, they don’t compete directly against COD. They’re all able to all coexist. What XDefiant does, is threaten to take a share of the arcade arena FPS market from Call of Duty. Xdefiant is free to play, with iconic guns, good movement, a ranked mode, stat tracking, quality maps and good communication from the devs, all this that call of duty has moved AWAY from in recent years in favour of becoming more casual friendly.
So here’s the thing. Even if 5% of the cod player base moved to Xdefiant. That’s still MILLIONS of people. That will definitely hurt Activision financially and if there’s one thing we know they care about. It’s money.
So to loop back to the starting question here, will Xdefiant kill cod? No. But what it could do is far far better for us as players. It could create COMPETITION in the market. COD has been able to get away with its bullshit for so long because it’s had a monopoly in the market. But with XDefiant potentially threatening that monopoly, call of duty is going to have to make some significant changes, especially with the decrease in popularity of warzone.
THE BEST POSSIBLE THING FOR US AS PLAYERS is to have as many games as possible fighting for our attention. Because when that happens, devs and publishers will have more incentive to make their games BETTER. Call of duty until now, has been lacking that inventive. There’s a reason a lot of us hardcore players who have been there since COD 4 don’t leave Call of duty and it’s because we have no where else to go. Yes there’s other genres of video games but if we wanted to play and arena shooter. Cod was really the only option. Now both XDefiant and Call of Duty will be battling to make the best games possible. And if you ask me, that’s better than the total death of cod. As much as I hate Activision.

You dont want to kill a game, you want to create competition. Competition allows developers to actually put effort in their game.
Look at EA you think anyone would buy Madden if there was another Sim. Football game. HELL NO
