  • 🎬 This is my Leave the World Behind Netflix Movie Review. Prepare for an intense cinematic experience as we delve into "Leave the World Behind," the 2023 film directed by Sam Esmail, based on the apocalyptic novel. Starring a stellar cast including Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali, Kevin Bacon, and more, this gripping story takes us on an unnerving journey into the unknown.
    🏡 Join Amanda and Clay, portrayed by Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke, on their aspirational family vacation that takes an unexpected turn when a father, played by Mahershala Ali, arrives with his daughter claiming ownership of the vacation home. As an unprecedented blackout grips the city, disconnecting them from the world, eerie occurrences and unsettling events begin to unfold.
    🌌 Explore the unsettling atmosphere as the families grapple not only with the apocalyptic crisis but also with tensions stemming from the clash of untrust. They clash and this becomes a distraction to the more alarming events happening around them, creating a harrowing backdrop to the unfolding chaos.
    🔍 Directed by Sam Esmail, known for his compelling storytelling in "Mr. Robot," this film offers a nuanced exploration of unseen dangers, human vulnerabilities, and the breakdown of societal norms amidst an escalating crisis. I'll delve into the performances, the film's atmospheric tension, and how it navigates the complexities of the human psyche under extreme circumstances.
    🎥 "Leave the World Behind" presents a thought-provoking narrative that transcends the boundaries of an apocalyptic thriller, diving into the intricacies of human relationships, fears, and societal tensions in the face of an unknown and looming threat.

    Needs a part 2 seperate from the characters of the first film but have another cast at a grounded level. Would love to see a family in the urban areas

      Usually I would say me too on your desire to see a part 2 setting in the urban areas but that would be very bleak. The setting in this movie is what gives the overall mystery about the film its biggest boost. Bunch of comfortable people who still did things like go swimming and getting drunk. A part 2 would not have any of the suspense in an urban setting. I can see the people getting very violent very quickly since there would be water and food shortages quickly.

      Agreed. I loved the whole thing except how it abruptly ended. The whole thriller aspect was great, even though you knew it was basically a cyber terror attack. I do like how Rose got to see the last episode of Friends. I guess we have to assume everyone else found their way to the bunker.
      I kind of see this being very possible. We already pit each other against ourselves, an it won't take much for that built resentment to go all out and we kill each other. The problem on the global scale that the perpetrators don't get is in a global market, having the largest economy taken out ruins the lives of the rest of the world, including them.

    The story takes place in a town called Port Comfort, the name of the ship that ran aground is the White Lion. Rose told her brother when they were in the woods, that nobody ever listened to her. And he told her she's probably right. Imagine how his story would have panned out if he took it upon himself to listen to her in that moment, and went to the house they were looking at. They wouldn't have had to even meet Kevin Bacon's character because that house's bunker was fully stocked with everything they needed. Including entertainment. That is why Rose ran away to the house alone. She was convinced that no one would listen to her, and she was tired of waiting to be heard, and tired of waiting to see the last episode of Friends. To me, Rose is the hero of this story.

Because many of these issues continue to remain unresolved in our lives and the world, and instead of sticking together (as animals in nature do), we prefer to remain oblivious to them and immerse ourselves in screens. It's like they threw a bunch of ideas at a wall, but none of them are cohesive. Cyber attack took out the country. Ok, possible. Also took out radio signal, ok, how? A few countries came together to take out satellites in space, ok how? We don't know. Why did the ship wreck, no gps? And computers? Can you not operate them manually? Why did the planes crash? Did they run out of fuel? If it was the computer thing, why did cars work, except Teslas? What was going on with the deer? Why did the boys teeth fall out? Was it really just a bug? 1) Knock on door and spoke to the family. Have the audience thinking they actually don't own the home they are invaders, so you immediately think it's some sort of horror movie.
    2) Then the animals gather, the Spanish woman and the boy being bite by an insect losing his teeth. You start thinking it's a end of the world virus.
    3) Scene in space that shows the satellite, specifically shot in a way to look like an eclipse, planes falling out the sky. Viewers start think end of the world again similar to "Knock at cabin" starring Dave Bautista.
    5) No it's just United States under attack. With the worse ending ever.
    I rate it 4/5 for storytelling until the final 30mins.
    5/5 for wasting my time with a plot that has nothing to do with animals gathering, eclipse or bug bite = losing teeth.
    Why try so hard when the movie could've said its the country is under attack and spend more time building on survival instead of the abrupt ending.

    • @Tyler_W
      @Tyler_W 6 месяцев назад +1

      The only, and I mean only thing I didn't "get" was why the animals were gathering around staring at people. They basically said at the end that "they're warning us," but animals don't do that. They "warn" observant humans by doing what they were already doing by hightailing it out of Dodge from a danger zone as fast as possible. As far as the mystery goes, idk if it executed it really poorly or if it says more about me that I figured mire or less exactly what it was as it was happening.
      SPOILERS AHEAD:
      I was thinking from the beginning that it was a cyber attack, propaganda, and directed energy/sound weapons. The only thing I didn't know was by whom, and the movie wasn't interested in answering that question either (nor was it obligated to do so, for the record, which is perfectly fine). The mystery B-plot wasn't much of a mystery, and I felt like not a whole lot of interesting things were happening in the interpersonal A-plot with characters I didn't enjoy watching and spending time with (Mahershala Ali and Ethan Hawke's characters being the exceptions). That's not a criticism of anyone's acting. The acting was perfectly well done across the board. I just thought most of them were insufferable to be around.

      @strawhatsanji4985 6 месяцев назад +1

      @Tyler_W OK, I get what you're saying, I agree with most things except the characters. I think they acted the role very well.
      My issue was the script, I did think it was a cyber attack. But the movie purposely did everything to change the story during the movie.
      As you said, what does animal have to do with anything?
      2) Why did they emphasize the bug bite to make us believe it wasn't radiation.
      3) Why did they show the satellite and the camera angle? It made it look like an eclipse.
      4) Why did they Ali client, not just say a war is coming, it's a flicking war not an asteroid or deadly virus coming to wipe us out.
      A war is not something secretive like the movie is leading us to believe.
      I can continue going with the number of parts that didn't make any senses.
      It just doesn't make sense that the movie took 2hrs 20mins to just say it's an attack when they could've done that since the 1hr mark and show more of how the families survive after finding out, instead of ending on the dumb cliffhanger.

    As someone who adores the book, this movie sucked. To be fair to the movie, i think this is a story that works much better as a novel but there were still some baffling choices made in the film. The book is a lot more mysterious and ambiguous, and the ambiguity was a focal point of the story. I thought all the scenes with the boats and planes and characters getting concrete information just takes away so much of the tension and mystery and intrigue that the novel masterfully built… this movie Completely misses the point of the book, does its own thing, yet fails to make a point of its own.

The cast is great and the cinematography + directing is top notch. This movie has strong messaging about the importance of trust, alliance, 2A, preparedness, don't rely on/trust the government, and why city people need to get a lesson in country every once in awhile. The central theme is how governments and adversaries use the idea of "divide and conquer" to collapse societies and cause implosion. I thought this was great, a movie about the importance of moderation. (And I saw someone who mentioned this movie is also an example of how we are too comfortable and don't appreciate the actual important things in life. The important things in life aren't junk food, TV shows, movies, or social media...the important things in life are faith and family. Humans are amazing.)

    While watching the movie, I thought it was good, but when I got to the end I realized it was pretty bad. The ending was just awful and left tons of loose ends. The characters were unrealistic and made questionable decisions. There was even some racism that was allowed to feature: the black girl literally said "we shouldn't trust people, especially not white people", and at some point tried to guilt-trip the white family by accusing them of not trusting the black family because they are black and the white family is racist, which very obviously was not the case. Some scenes were also completely unnecessary like the awful dancing scene and the self-loathing monologue from Julia Roberts.

The movie spent its whole time building up to what could’ve been covered in 5 minutes. It showed nothing about the black out. The theme of the movie could’ve been executed so much better.
    Some of the dialogue was absurd. The daughter randomly asking the teacher if he’s “the type to fuck his students” lol. Who in the right mind would add that in as random dialogue.

    I agree with your take. The opening dialogue was *terrible* and I couldn't believe I was hearing Julia Roberts speak those lines. It became a really interesting movie with striking and some memorably nightmarish scenes and concepts-very Mr. Robot overall, so Esmail was the perfect director for the story.
    But what did it add up to? We got an explanation of what was most likely happening. I appreciate the concept of the viewers being as in the dark as the characters are; that aspect works for me. But some elements don't make any sense, such as the deer (How are they affected by chaos and the Internet and cell phone networks going down, and what are they doing??) and the teeth-was it the tick that bit him? Was it the piercing sound? Was it witnessing the tanker crash? Too many elements were thrown into the story. But the kid was pretty awful to his just-fine sister so I knew something bad was coming his way...
    The final scene did annoy me. The movie was long. I checked a couple of times while watching to see how much time was left. I knew the end would come soon. But the choice of where to end it...very frustrating and unsatisfying. I guess the girl is in the bunker for as long as the generator and Cheetos last and all her family are either deer dinner or saved by the angelic ruminants.
    To be fair to Esmail, I read Goodreads reviews of the novel and many people despised it because of all the same elements-the nonsensical deer stuff, the way it ends abruptly with no resolution and not really pointing toward any. Several even said it felt like the publisher published the first half a novel without the second half, and the movie does sort of feel like that.
    For something so bleak, I enjoyed it a lot more than Black Mirror, Bird Box and Don't Look Up. It may have been aiming for something like Melancholia, except addressing misanthropy instead of depression. If so, then it really didn't come close to reaching that bar.
    My takeaways will be the striking ship scene and the Teslas slamming into one another. Both are striking visions and plausible-ish if telecomm networks were to suddenly go haywire or crash. The airplane felt gratuitous mainly because it was a second version of the ship and, like the family, the guy just ran away and didn't seem too traumatized by what he witnessed.
    The deer, the flamingos...a little disturbing but completely nonsensical given what was supposed to have been happening. Computer networks were hacked, satellites taken out. How did this drive animals crazy? Did it turn a tick into a radioactive spider-critter? I wish the screenwriters had pared down the 'freaky things in nature' stuff for the movie given that this apocalyptic scenario was meant to be tech based and not ecological.

    • @Tyler_W

      For the record, I didn't like this movie, but I can answer at least some of your questions. The bug bite was a red herring to leave the audience with multiple possibilities for what could have been causing his illness, but the clues were all there, and the pepper finally tells the audience what caused it. It's a directed energy/sound weapon, and yes, this is a real thing. The guy in the movie mentioned it being used in Cuba, and maybe it was, but I remember hearing something about that in the Egyptian revolution. Actually, former on-the-ground journalist Tim Pool mentioned it being used in a recent Timcast IRL podcast, (which is probably one reason why I kind of guessed it as it was happening in the movie). He mentioned some live reporting he did on the revolution for VICE back in the day (I think it was VICE anyway). It somehow uses microwaves to incapacite, terrify, and disorient the targeted population. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but the deafening sound is at a frequency that can practically drops you immediately, and some of the potential side effects of the radiation are nausea and even teeth falling out in extreme cases. It's basically a nasty crowd control (or crowd agitating) weapon used by military and police. I'm not certain, but it may have even been used in the US in some limited capacity in the not so distant past if I'm not mistaken, but don't quote me on that. I'm also not sure if it's purely nonlethal or if it could also be used lethally. At least based on all of the evidence the movie provides, that seems like the most obvious answer. Whoever's using drones to blast this microwave weapon is doing it to cause chaos, confusion and panic for the purpose of accomplishing what George was talking about at the end of the movie.
      The only thing about this movie that made absolutely no sense to me was the deer. I think I get the point, but the way it executes that point was just bizarre. Ruth said "they're warning us," but the way they did it just seems weird to create an artificial sense of mystery that doesn't acthally make sense (unless deer actually do this sort of thing and I'm somehow just not aware). The way animals "warn" people about looming danger is if humans arw and observant enough to see them getting out of Dodge in droves as fast as possible, which they were already doing in the movie anyway. The whole stopping, surrounding and staring at people part just felt unnecessary and contrived, like it went that extra step just to be extra spooky and to lead people down a false rabbit trail in order to prolong the mystery. The deer and birds fleeing made sense, but the deer standing about was a stranfe red herring that had nothing to do with anything that was actually happening. There was nothing about the technology that was causing them to behave this way.

My problem with the movies are thos 2 or 3 monologues over explaining the "Moral of the story", hated that, felt very condescending and I feel movies are doing that more and more. Other than that, they never in the movie promised straightforward explanations cause it really is not about what's happening, but about the people we are following in these events. The ending is basically a big fuck you to all and it works, cause no one really knows and we the public are no different either. So, if no one knows, no one can do anything, just sit back, relax and enjoy the few simple things you have left to grab on to, like a damn sitcom, cause really, it doesn't matter, and there is no reason for hope.

    In my opinion the ending is pretty clear. With Ruthie's explanation of how the series friends depicts a false reality that never existed. The final episode being played out at the end of the movie shows that our own false reality is over. And now we're all stuck trying to survive with the true nature of ourselves.

    Absolutely loved this thriller! I was pleasantly surprised. I loved the chemistry between Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawk, and Mahershala Ali. The way they each gave unique but great acting performances, really elevated this film. There were some really creepy moments and tons of scary tension. I agree with you about the ending, although in fairness, I can't really remember a good apocolyptic-themed movie that delivered a great ending. I think it's kind of hard to get a satisfying ending with these types of films, which may be why they ended it the way they did. Overall, this was a really solid thriller and definitely worth a watch.

    I’m confused when people say the ending was open-ended. It wasn’t, imo. It eluded to what was going to happen next: the dads agreed they were all in this together, said they needed to make it to the bunker. Rose, on her own, found said bunker. The other ladies were already on their way to the house, where they’ll find rose, thus finding the bunker. It’s all laid out 😂 now what happens after that would be another movie 🤷🏾‍♀️

    I hated this movie the whole time. How many times did people see some crazy shit and beat around the bush telling everyone what they saw or say nothing at all. The whole movie was people knowing and seeing things and not talking about it. People wouldn’t do that irl. And small things like driving the car down the middle of the road when the teslas are coming head on…. When there is a HUGE shoulder 😂. Suggesting that they take their son to the hospital…. They were WAY past that point. And then the end, it was a movie trying to be clever but it just came off cheap. Surprised the plot and delivery had so many holes in it, because some of the dialogue was so good. I loved when the son said “you’re nostalgic for a time that never existed.” That’s some profound shit

    • @AdamLovesHorror

      The cars were crashing if they just waited then they’d never get on actual cement again. There was no huge free shoulder to drive on I’ve double checked. And people not being honest with each other and discussing things that can help them/others is a theme throughout and about us as a society IMO

    I don't know why people hate this film. The only reason seems to be that there appear to be 'woke' tropes, but I think the film provides satisfying conclusions to all the stereotypical conflicts set up at the beginning. If it was typically woke the black characters wouldn't bond with the whites, the prepper would have shot the intruders etc etc. I think Americans expect and believe that everyone WOULD end up killing each other through suspicion and paranoia but that simply isn't normal human behaviour

      @@nothingsurprisesmeanymoreI thought the film did a good job of keeping us wondering and always on our toes just like how we would feel in real life from a cyber terrorist attack. Never having the information we need. We always rely on our phones for daily life and when that is stripped from us it is very easy to panic. The film also slightly mentions the divide in America and how they wouldn’t have to do much. We are already all so divided and against each other they just let us go to town on each other. Like the last step of the plan and recipe used for taking down a government. I know there are some problems with the film but I thought the concept was cool. I liked the show revolution a lot which has somewhat of a similar concept to this film. So does Mr. Robot. What was it that you didn’t enjoy?

  • @Tyler_W
    @Tyler_W 6 месяцев назад +1

    Gotta personally disagree on this one. I can appreciate certain aspects, but I just thought this movie blows. The acting was perfectly fine. It was interestingly shot, and I kinda liked the suspenseful music, but a lot of the interpersonal drama felt really forced, and a lot of the social commentary just felt trite. For a good chunk of the middle of this movie, I felt like most of the suspense was coming from the music and the cool shot conposition/framing more than from what was actually happening on screen. Yeah, those are good and effective things to have in order to amplify feelings of suspense, but they should be a compliment to the story, not the source of that suspense. The only time I felt real, prolonged and well earned suspense was when George and Ruth showed up that first night, and we had the whole "are they legit," "can they be trusted" bit and when the three men had their negotiation standoff at the end. (The Open House was another recent dull suspense movie that had a similar problem with unearned tension and music-driven or character/event-driven suspense imo.) I like plenty of deliberately paced movies that largely involve characters doing little more than talking to each other, but I found myself far more interested in the sociopolitical stuff they were talking about happening off screen than I was interested in what was actually happening in front of me. I think that's probably because all of the characters except those played by Ali and Hawke were incredibly irritating and not enjoyable or engaging to spend time with. Again, nothing against the performances or the performers, but i frequently felt the urge to yell stfu to the characters played by Roberts and Myha'la in just about every scene they were in, and the kids were kind of awful for no reason too. It felt like all of this suspense culminated into pretty much nothing with no real closure to the interpersonal side of the story. That may have been the point, but that doesn't mean i have to like it for doing that on purpose. I "get it," in fact, believe it or not, I kinda figured out exactly what was going on as it was happening, so the mystery just wasn't much of a mystery to me, but maybe that says more about me than it says about the movie itself. It can still be fun to watch characters fogure out a mystery you already sussed out for yourself, but I just didn't think the characters were either likable or interesting enough for me to stay lnvested. Maybe I would have liked this a little bit better if it was sborter and if it didn't end so abruptly. Tbh, it definitely felt like predictive programming, and I really hope that doesn't become true, but nothing would surprise me at this point. If you and others genuinely liked it, that's cool. I just couldn't vibe with this one.

    After I noticed that Michelle Obama was an executive producer for this movie…. the storyline made total sense. This movie was OK, but it was nothing special…in the scene almost at the end with Kevin Bacon saying what he said with his shotgun and the American flag over his shoulder… they were making a statement with this movie basically that if mega Republicans could take over the United States, this is the way that they would do. It .. this is pure propaganda.
