    I'm an old, retired photographer. I also had a separate career doing commercial video. I'm 70 now and I have embraced the digital media for more than 20 years. All of your advice is really great, especially the part about location scouting. Color grading is something I usually do with stills, so I love what you are doing even when just doing the shots of yourself talking. As an old man I want to encourage you to keep at this. Also the courtesy thing when shooting is always the best path. Respect really makes friends better than anything in this world.

    Locating and light are everything. To give an idea, I work at a local coffee shop and they had to make a set happen there for a TV show. They weren't changing any of the decor in there. It was a simple dialogue scene by the front window. Almost all close-up and there weren't really any extras. Just that, the whole place was filled with gear top to bottom, pelican cases everywhere. The whole crew was about 20 people, and they had to get the fridges turned off during shooting because the buzz would get into the microphones - now personally I would've went with lavaliers but they wanted that and after all, they paid for it. People have no idea of the sheer amount of work that goes into producing a simple dialogue scene...!

    • @ludwigvonn9889
      @ludwigvonn9889 9 месяцев назад +1

      Yes omg! I was an extra in some shows, and its absolutely insane how many people work on the set and how everything needs to be coordinated and super synced. One single scene, that lasts about 15 seconds in the show/movie can sometimes take hours to get done, its mind blowing...so its always like a little new years eve celebration when a scene gets done in the first take :D

    Good solid no bullshit advice here. Everything you say is true, especially the last bit about knowing your camera. So many RUclips videos with people using different cameras each time, same with multitudes of different film. I spent years with HP5/HP5 and Agfa Pan 25, and my Mamiya RB67 Pro S. I'd like to say that I learned my camera/film back to front, including the film development. But, nope..I always learned something new most times I used my little combinations. Today it is a digital Hasselblad..same process, learn something new each time, but I stick with the same camera. Great to have found your channel..you are an inspiration to an old farty photographer who has never lost the zest for photography, who sees something new each time I go out with my camera. Best wishes, David in the UK.

    A few things more:
    Lighting - throw some cheap LEDs inside of china balls, or muslin cloth as a diffuser is cheap as hell or even a shower curtain.
    Vintage Glass - some vintage lenses can be had for under 100$ that genuinely have identical cine lens counterparts in circulation today. See the comprehensive FD lens guide from cinema division for more info
    Grading - Getting good at grading can make the difference between that hollywood look and the student film look. The Movie LUTs YT channel has a breakdown on why short film whiplash looks so different from the feature film version and a lot of it is down to a more confident grade.

    Awesome man ! So freaking inspiring !! I have a question, in your videos you always make people look so damn cool, so if you were to film content for a clothing brand with only one cine lens on a crop sensor camera, would you grab a 24 mm that would be a 35 mm or a 35 that would be a 50 mm ?? I only have the budget for one lens, and thinking about this is killing me lol. I would so appreciate your professional opinion on this. Not all of us who watch you are filmmakers, but we want to create good and pleasant videos, and you my man, are hella inspiring.
