  • Part of the ostrich care series! These are tips and tricks I've learned along the way and am sharing to help others get started raising their own ostriches. This is what works for me, I'm sure there are other breeders with different preferences, I am by no means an expert and am always happy to hear constructive criticism or tips to make my life easier!
The fence in this video is from Tractor Supply, It's Redbrand, horse safe no climb wire, 4 feet tall. The posts are mostly locust posts I've gotten on the cheap from farmers clearing land. Locust grows like crazy here and it's a really strong solid wood that lasts forever even without pretreatment.

Didn't realize just how much smaller the females are in comparison to the males. How many do you have on the farm, just the 2?

I just have the two but once I fence the next area and get a shelter up I plan to add another breeder pair. Need to get a good side by side of Fred and Ethyl together when it's not breeding season. She stands a bit taller when she's not dancing lol

@@thiscrazybird88 I see does the male kick and charge the fence for no reason or only when he's feeling like being aggressive.

He only seems to do it when something has irritated him or he thinks he's being challenged. He does it on occasion with the emus or the llamas if they walk to close to the fence during breeding season

Are meal worms healthy for them?

I haven't tried it but they do eat insects and small animals so I'm sure they would enjoy them! Other then what they catch in their pens though, I only feed them their speficially formulated ostrich pellet from Kalmbach, mixed with alfalfa pellets (in the winter) and good quality sweet feed. They do get extra snacks of fresh fruits and veggies though.
