I am commenting here because I'm so excited. I'm moving to Germany in a month or so, so I'm rewatching all of your videos! Doing my homework for a smooth transition thanks to you~!
Guys, I just wanted to say that THANK YOU SO MUCH! I'm going to Berlin for my master's degree and I can't explain how your videos helped me!!! This will be my first time abroad, so I am beyond nervous, but your videos saved my life!!! I appreciate you guys soo much!
Another great video - and really timely for me! I think the only exceptions to the Ameldung registration requirement for expats residing in Germany would be: those staying/living an extended time in Germany under the rules of the Geneva Conventions (this category doesn't even need a passport, or visa, to enter Germany); those traveling on an official government (non-tourist) passport (applicable to persons only from certain countries); or, those with a diplomatic passport from any country which Germany has an acknowledged diplomatic relationship. (You would know which countries these are because those countries have an embassy somewhere in Germany. In the US, for example, we have no North Korean emabassy, because we currently have no diplomatic relationship with them. Also, from 1961 until 2015 we had no diplomatic relationship with Cuba, but do now.)
Well, it's not actually illegal to use your phone as a Wifi hotspot, it's more that this is usually excluded/limited in the terms of the usual plans offered by provider (voice + data). Most providers also offer data-only plans (originally meant for use in tablet or netbooks), which are less restricted and/or less expensive. As these are meant for data, you can usally use these sim-cards as secondary SIM in a dual-SIM phone or in an old phone to provide Wifi coverage (of course provided you get a decent bandwith where you live)
in Israel for mobie contract: You pay about 6.5€ a month, you get unlimited calls and SMS, and around 200 GB internet volume, you can call internationally for free to landlines, can tavel abroad with it (on special request or regular term) and you can cancell any time without a penelty. You just pay the remnaing time you used the contract until the day you canceled. When you order internet home, you get it in 1-2 days, and it is Fiber speed. All the country almost is already connected.
Wow, I've been watching your videos for about a week now (even though I don't currently have a plan to live in Germany) and I just needed to say that your videos are excellent, well-thought out and clear. I could definitely see myself making a to-do list from your videos in the future if I was to live in Germany. I hope your channel keeps growing! a y los videos son de super alta calidad, son bien interesantes para ver
Ugh, the Anmeldung. I lived for several months in Germany as an exchange student in the 1990s without registering with the city. It’s a long story and related to a misunderstanding about visa requirements. But, every time I heard the police sirens at night, my heart raced, for fear they were coming to arrest me because of not registering! Otherwise, loved my time in Germany.
Hi Jen & Yvonne,Thank you for all your useful contents you made, Thanks to you I feel a lot more prepared before I come to Germany, I'm in the process of getting a Bluecard visa and hopefully be there in next month, You gave me a crystal clear roadmap to follow 😊
Actually to use an SIM Card as my primary InternetAccess at Home is completely legal. I am doing this for about 3 years now and Never Hand Problems with it. Maybe some providers dont allow this, but the Telekom does!
Thank you for the super useful tips! I just arrived in Duisburg a month ago and I have few points to add on! 1: depending on the city that you live in, your appointment date for your Anmeldung can take a long time! there is a waiting period of around 3-4 months for me! 2: getting an internet connection for the home is not that tough these days. I got my Vodafone internet and it was activated in less than 30min. Thanks for helping me transition to the German lifestyle "SMOOTHLY" with your videos.
Woaah!! Thanks for sharing your experience! Super cool to know that your internet connection was up super fast! Regarding the Anmeldung you are right. Especially with Covid appointments can take a lot longer, which is why we recommend making an appointment online already before you come to Germany 😊
@@simplegermany Yeah I agree! Sadly in my case even an online appointment was not possible! I had to vist the foreigners office just to get my appointment slip! I have to wait all the way till January to get my tax ID, after that only I can apply for my residence permit which will delay my opening bank account as well! Infact I couldn't verify my N26 bank account cz f all these delay!
You probably were lucky that your predecessor was with the same Internet provider you are. DSL ports are registered to the provider, and sometimes that means a connection on a manual switchboard. In those cases, to get your landline connection up and running, someone needs to physically come to your home or that distribution point down the road to plug in that one connector cable. That's usually the part that takes longest, much longer than just setting up your account to log on or sending you some hardware. When your contract ends, usually only the account is deactivated, but that connector is left as it is. So, if your predecessor was with Vodafone as well, all that needed to be done was the account registration. The same applies, if your apartment already had cable TV available , and you chose a plan that uses this already existing line to access the internet.
Girls thanks so much for all these tips, this video is incredibly helpful and I can see my newbie-anxiety already calming down. I moved in Germany last Monday and I'm trying to stick with all of that, I hope to get every points done properly in a reasonable time but I'm a bit concerned about the SCHUFA. Do you think they will take in consideration my credit score from the Country I was lived in previously? I'm currently living in a temporary accommodation, I'm eager to find my own place but it seems so difficult especially with a dog
Thanks for your feedback! We’re glad the content is helping you out. Your SCHUFA record starts when you do the Anmeldung. And as far as we know, it does not take any credit score from another country into consideration.

I LOVE your channel and your web site - thank you for taking the time and effort to help people like me! Yours is the best information in one place that I have found in my search for all things German, except that it does seem to address working people, while I am a retired 64 year old American (born in Stuttgart, though!). I am in Schleswig right now, staying in my son-in-law's apartment while he and my daughter are away. I wonder if the anmeldung and tax info you provide applies to retired people as well? Thanks for all you do!
To get a residence in Germany there is also the "Meldebestautigung", I don't know the difference between the Meldebescheinigung and Anmeldebestätigung but the former can be obtained while staying in an Airbnb :)
The different names all refer to the same document 😊. With some Airbnbs you might be able to, but by far not with the majority, so this is not the best option.
@@simplegermany Oh sure, this is probably not the best option, just an easy one (at least here in Saarbrucken :D ). PS: thanks for your videos, they really help :)
Thank you so much for the great tips. One thing that’s annoying me though is that you just name the chapters “thing #1”, “thing #2”, etc. instead of naming the exact tip or topic. I think it would be much easier to go back ans forth between chapters this way.
I don't find it annoying, I think it's clever! If somebody hovers over the time frame of the video and see let's say namings like "Internet provider" or "Housing", they'll think like, 'well yeah, that comes naturally into mind, why even mention those' but then when the topic is talked about, you hear a lot of additional things you probably had no idea about! So I'm only saying I think it's the smarter way, in cases like this. 🙂
Your videos are straight forward and educational. Thank you for your effort! Q: my wife is an EU citizen. I am an American. What type of visa/permit would I need when moving to Germany, being married to an EU citizen? Or would I go straight to a Blue Card? We've been married for 13 years. Danke!
Your own work permit such as the Blue Card would of course work, but you could also look into family reunification. It depends a little bit also, whether your wife will be working or not.
i'm watching your videos and get a better understanding simply. is there a video about keeping our suitcase or renting a locker to keep our suitcase in Munich airport for some days while we do our business trip to Italy and France for few days then getting back to Germany? Thank you very much in advance for your help.
Danke euch!
Is there still something like a tourism tax in Germany? I am sure I watched a video of you both mentioning it. Or did I dream it? But last time I visited Germany, Fehmarn to be specific, there were notices near the beaches and car parks stating a 1.50 euro tourism tax.
Yes, Fehmarn and other coastal towns or any town that is a Kurort (spa town) has Kurtaxe. So that is the tax you are referring to. There is no general tourism tax in Germany that we are aware of.
Thanks for the shoutout! Currently we're not on TikTok. For now we like to keep our focus in creating great content for RUclips, our website, and newsletter.
So, I don't know if this is something specific to Ostfildern or not, but I wasn't able to do *die Anmeldung* before having my temporary residence permit. I have no idea why, but I got turned away at my Anmeldung appointment despite being able to accurately describe and understand what I needed in German with the personnel.
Oh that is super interesting. As far as we know, you usually require your Anmeldung to get your residence permit. Thanks for sharing your experience and please keep us updated on how things work out!
I have a question. I am in my fifties and live in Australia. My father was born in Germany and grew up in Germany and migrated to Australia after the war. Would or could that help me in any way to get a German working visa?
Yes, this is easier. Try to get some Papers from your father like the birth certificate (Geburtsurkunde), a copy of his passport... With this you can even try to get a german passport. I would go to your next german Embassy. They have to help you with this!
Don't know about Germany, but in the United States. It is much easier for women to introduce themselves than for men to introduce themselves. Americans are fearful and suspicious, separated by houses and by yards. It isn't looked at positively for a man to wander onto a property and knock on doors, and that could even get him in trouble.
I have a question for you If I may. We are coming to Germany from EU so we don't need visa. How exactly is it with health insurance? Because I read your article and I see that if we work we are automaticly insured and we contribute to insurance from our wage. So when we come to Germany, do we need to sign up for public insurance first and then get a job ? Or first get a job and then we will get that insurance from our employer.
You will have to sign up to health insurance yourself and then inform your employer about which insurer you have. Every resident in Germany must have health insurance regardless of where they are from or whether they work or not. You can find out which health insurance is best for you via our partner feather insurance: www.simplegermany.com/feather-health-yt/
I just went to book my appointment at the Berlin Bürgeramt. The first available date is in November! How do they expect anyone to be able to do it in 2 weeks? hahaha
Yes, it’s known for being too busy. That’s why we recommend making an appointment already before your move 😉 November is still great, we know people wait time is sometimes over 3 months 🙈
Hello from canada, please anything regarding moving to germany with kids 3 years old. How about kita and which area is much better to relocate with family and find english speakers job. Thanks deby❤❤❤❤
You kind of forgot to add that one should get vaccinated. Without vaccination, the restrictions are so annoying and hinder one's ability to dine indoors among other things.
This is something I wanted to ask. I was following a gay guy on Instagram from X country (I dont want to say the nationality to avoid generalizations) that was living in Leipzig and now in Berlin. He is doing videos all around the city sometimes without a mask. Someday, someone asked to him that If we will get vaccined and he HAVE THE DARE to record a video saying in a sassy way that he is NOT getting for sure vaccined. I felt that was so unresponsible that I DM to know the why and he only answered "Because I dont want to" no futher explanation. I inmediately unfollowed him and blocked. He is all around having colds and sickness, always showing it is not Covid but still... And he goes a lot to the gym. A LOT. He even went to a water park, swimming next to children. I couldn't believe it. I mean, are there any restrictions there? What about with people who is not getting vaccined? Specially if the person is a refugee?
Every state has their own Covid measures in place. Generally speaking that means that one can only do indoor activities (including gyms, swimming pools, restaurants and hotels) with proof of vaccination, a healed infection in the past 6 months or a negative test).
If come to Germany from a country part of the EU and I already have European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), should I hurry to get regular German health insurance?
Hey Angel, the EHIC is great for travel, however it is not good for a longer stay or actually living in Germany. For living in Germany, you should get insurance from a German health insurance. Feather can help you find the best one for you: www.simplegermany.com/feather-health-yt/
Hi, if you are renting an apartment for 5 or 6 months while on a language learning residence visa and for example, a pipe bursts and there is a flood(through no fault of your own) who is liable for that? I'm not sure if I need the liability insurance for such a short period, because I cant imagine what damage I would do to others' property.
You should check our rental agreement and speak to the landlord. It depends on the specific cause for the water damage which type of insurance will cover, e.g. if it is a burst pipe, the landlords building insurance will cover to repair the damage on the house. Your home contents insurance will cover the damages to your property. Hope this helps.
I have a question please🥸 For opening a german bank account i need a resident permit (not just visa) and for my insurance i need a bank to pay ! What should i do ?( i just arrived few weeks ago)
Hey Reza, you should be able to open a German bank account with your Meldebescheinigung, which you get when you register with your local Bürgeramt after you have moved into your flat. Try to open your account with one of the banks that we review in this video: ruclips.net/video/n25SQus45xQ/видео.html 😊
You don't mention renting a bike. Which is a cheaper option than buying one. You pay 20 euro per month and have always a bike in good condition. Bike mechanics are very expensive in Germany so if you can't do every repair by yourself, than you will pay. And the rented bike has a "pfand" - you pay 60 euro at the beginning and this is your insurance. When your bike gets stolen you get another one in 24 hours and loose only these 60 euro. You lost your bike key? They will deliver you a new one tomorrow. There are electric bikes available to rent too (ofcourse are more expensive about 60-100 euro depending on how much you use it). I think over a half of Liferando/ Gorillas etc. bike couriers in Berlin use rented bikes. From one hand they get a new one immidiaetly when it gets broken (and they need it tomorrow to go to work) and from the other hand they are mostly immigrants so they don't have a problem to get rid of the bike when they go back to the home country.
@@simplegermany the most popular is Swapfiets. They have charakteristic blue front wheel you have already seen for sure. As the name suggests it's a company from Netherlands (fiets = bike) and exists in every bigger city in Germany. I personally moved from one city to another and just left a bike at their store in the 'old' city and two days later got another one in the 'new' one. So i moved with a bike without having to transport it with all other of my belongings. Recently facebook shows me some new long term bike rental companies, but i'm not planning any change right now.
Thanks for very useful video. I'm wondering why it is illegal to use mobile hotspot as WiFi inside home? I looked it up in the internet but didn't find anything.
Hey Ali, most providers do not allow full-time home usage as per their terms and conditions. You need to leave your home several times a month, and should you consume too much data from the same spot or your home address, the providers are at liberty to cancel your contract or connection. You are also not allowed to use your SIM card with an LTE or wifi router at home. Hope this helps 😊

Hello! could you please give a way how people who do not come from the countries of the European Union and who have graduated from the university in their country of birth can convert their diplomas into German or English. as far as we know, the diplomas they receive here are not recognized in Germany
You can practice a few sentences in German. Most Germans speak some English, but starting off with some introductory German sentences shows them you are making an effort ☺️. That has been my experience at least - Jen

I love your page already ❤
I will soon be doing all those things
Hope you talk what we should do at Christmas 🎉in Berlin dears
Do you guys have a video about all the types of visas to enter/live in Germany? I’m Brazilian/ British and I’m planning to move to Germany next year 😊
Nope we don’t. Visa is such an individual thing depending on so many factors.
Thank you.
Love your channel! Very Informative more powers to you Jen and Yvonne
Thank you
Your videos are straight forward and educational.
@@simplegermany she would work eventually. I would be the first to start work while we settle. She's originally from Poland.
Amazing guys
Is there a detailed video about buy and drinking hard alcohol 😀 . Not just beer🍻
Quick question, in which language do you usually talk to each other, when the camera is off? Is it german, english or spanish, a mix of all 3?
Mostly English, with a splash of German and Spanish built in 😅
Hello, Can u pls make a video on buying a phone on a contract in Germany with all the T&Cs ? Thanks
Hello , I see other RUclipsr said no more tax class 3&5
I don’t understand , can you detail more
Ich liebe deine Filme! Sehr cool! Ich möchte zu bewege nach Deutschland :(. Eins Tag vielleicht 🤔.
wow, what a great video
i'm watching your videos and get a better understanding simply. is there a video about keeping our suitcase or renting a locker to keep our suitcase in Munich airport for some days while we do our business trip to Italy and France for few days then getting back to Germany? Thank you very much in advance for your help.
Hey Melly, we don't have a specific video on that, but you should be able to find lockers at Munich airport.
Danke euch!
Ja haben wir 😉 ruclips.net/video/xoN6AZeE5GU/видео.html
Hi from Serbia! Thank you for video 🙂👍
When you mentioned to meet german people, and introduce yourself, can you also recommend having a pen-pal before arriving to Germany? 🇩🇪
Yes, of course 😊
Is there still something like a tourism tax in Germany? I am sure I watched a video of you both mentioning it. Or did I dream it? But last time I visited Germany, Fehmarn to be specific, there were notices near the beaches and car parks stating a 1.50 euro tourism tax.
Yes, Fehmarn and other coastal towns or any town that is a Kurort (spa town) has Kurtaxe. So that is the tax you are referring to. There is no general tourism tax in Germany that we are aware of.
I’ve made some TikTok’s about my journey here and I’m shouting you out on the app. Do y’all use it often? I think y’all should utilize it if not.
I am paying 3000 euro because i don't have a liability insurance.it's very very very important guys.
Wait. Is that true? Travel insurance needed as a tourist? I’ve visited Germany a few times and I didn’t have that.
@@simplegermany Thank you so much for information. Great videos and big help ! 👌
@@simplegermany yes that's exactly what I've done, I'll be moving at the start of October. And btw, you girls have helped immensely, thank you! :)
Hello from canada, please anything regarding moving to germany with kids 3 years old. How about kita and which area is much better to relocate with family and find english speakers job. Thanks deby❤❤❤❤
Which legal platform do u recommend for a lawyer consultation ?
Hello. How can I cancel my prepaid sim card? Or I should just stop charging it and it will be cancelled automatically?
Thank you
You can stop charging it, yes. But you can also contact your provider and submit your cancellation.
@@simplegermany thanks!
I have a question please🥸
For opening a german bank account i need a resident permit (not just visa) and for my insurance i need a bank to pay !
The ‘first’,thought was going to be,buy a liter of Liquid bread,or a case & take it to your room/casa/home/hotel room etc. 🤣
Yes! In between the bureaucratic stuff there needs to be room for that 😅
You don't mention renting a bike.
Very interesting insight! Can you name a bike rental company you know?
Is it really illegal to use hotspot in Germany?
No it is not illegal. But a provider might cancel your contract if you misuse your hotspot for permanent use.
Oh - isn't it true that some towns or cities in Germany have highspeed wireless Internet built into the infrastructure?
A lot of city centers offer free WiFi hotspots nowadays, but you can't bank on them to have internet where ever you go.
Why is having a hot spot is illegal?
Great

Hello! could you please give a way how people who do not come from the countries of the European Union and who have graduated from the university in their country of birth can convert their diplomas into German or English. as far as we know, the diplomas they receive here are not recognized in Germany
You can check if your degree is recognized in Germany here: www.anerkennung-in-deutschland.de/html/en/index.php
I have an Albanian diploma and unfortunately it is not recognized, please can you help me, what steps should I follow to convert my diploma
Hi , i am an EU citizen , if i apply for job , what documents enployer needs
Each employer is different, so make sure to check with them directly.
Introducing ourselves to neighbors will be interesting if they don't speak English. 😦
You can practice a few sentences in German. Most Germans speak some English, but starting off with some introductory German sentences shows them you are making an effort ☺️. That has been my experience at least - Jen
