In Afrikaans, if someone doesn't use small talk to start a conversation or broach a subject, we say :" Hy val sommer met die deur in die huis." (no knocking - just barge in). It sounds as if it could mean rude manners - but no, it doesn't have a rude meaning attached to it. It's just someone who speaks directly.
Why should someone in SA talk about the weather? It is always perfect. And other way around why ask „how are you?“ if the one and only answer is „fine“. Using knife&fork: maybe just because you(/we) can 😉. But we also just eat w/o tools, depending on the situation. Some people eat sugar globuli to cure themselves. Science says it works, but it would work w/o globuli, if you just would believe it. Some of us also use gym clothes everyday, but you won’t find them on a university campus. It makes you look like „lowest class“.
About Social Norms well! it depends where you are in South Africa. I used to be very offended when I came to Johannesburg i would ask someone how they are and they would just respond with just ‘’I’m fine” most of the people would have passed you to long time whilst still expecting a response. In the Eastern Cape we more like Germans, we make a conversation out of greetings it’s even worse with the elderly do not just say I’m fine otherwise they would be very offended. In the Eastern Cape people have all the time to respond to you unlike in Johannesburg people are so busy they don’t have that time to respond and passion that’s is how I got to console myself coming from the Eastern Cape.
In hear what you’re saying, but I don’t think what you describe is like Germans at all. What they are saying is if you do ask the question, be prepared to hear a proper response. But most of the time people don’t ask, or are not expected to hear, or indeed answer, that question. Most of the time this is avoided. You say hello and get to the point. On that scale what you describe of the Eastern Cape is the extreme opposite of Germany. Johannesburg would then be in the middle. My own opinion is that for all it’s well publicised flaws, the people of Johannesburg are quite friendly for a city, and quite warm. Even towards outsiders and in the South African context.
WAIT... the thing about toast in Germany is: Its a special not completely baked white bread. You can eat toast untoasted, but seriously, that tastes terrible. If you wanna eat something white untoasted, you gonna buy white bread (available in slices). We have "million" different breads in Germany. And toast is called toast because YOU HAVE TO toast it for having the final taste. That is simple, right?

Been in Germany and speak the language now, my daughter is going on an exchange too, so really enjoy your perspectives. “How are you?” is just a way of aknowledging someone you deal with a bit more. It is not quite meaningless. People would normally say “good and you?” It also gives opportunity for some more small talk. It also gives opportunity for some minor complaint about the weather (yes we do sometimes talk about it, though the weather is normally less interesting to South Africans than it seems to be to many Europeans). It is an opportunity to so something in a language one does not normally speak well. For example in Johannesburg people (sensing my ethnicity) would often put this question to me in Afrikaans, and I myself would likewise often pose the question in Zulu or Sotho. (In those cases I might well talk about the weather just to say something). This relaxed talking is some of the things I missed when I was abroad. Btw also from Roodepoort. And Germans really know their thing when it comes to variety of bread. It is indeed quite embarassing in that context that will call that pre sliced mass produced thing bread.
As a German, I never met a person who ate Burgers with Fork and knife, so that was very new for me 😅 maybe it depends on the are?! (I am from Hamburg) It is also very rare to see people in the north eating pizza with fork and knife. I did it once in my live in that was in a italian resturant, where they had huge pizzas and everyone where eating with fork and knife. But that was the only time I did it and saw it. In South Africa, we do have toastie bread, by Samko too. The one you showed has big premium slices. Toasties have more slices and they are thin to fit perfectly on a toaster.😂

This is so funny! Here in Frankfurt Pizza is always cut. How I eat it depends on where I eat it and how hot it is. In the beginning or in a restaurant I usally start with cutlery. When I eat it in a park I'll only use my hands... 🙄😂 Munich is very posh. You will find thousends of people in gym clothes on the street everywhere else. I think it has to do with social status. The poorer an area is the more people in Leggins and Jogginghosen you will see. I actually like the thought of changing my clothes after sports... We Germans love our bread. 🥰 We have lots and lots of different kinds. "Toasted Toast" for Breakfast is fine but for a sandwich it doesn't have enough taste (imho) and it always leaves me hungry. I would rather have a Brötchen or any other kind of bread because it tastes so much better and will last longer. To be honest, I love the english sandwiches when I'm over there. But after some time I really miss german bread. I love Baguette though ... 😂 I think bread is our soft spot. As for people being naked in the park - this only happens in Munich. I remember feeling rather disturbed when I first came to Munich. In Frankfurt you might sometimes see women sunbathing topless but it is really, really rare and more in secluded areas. I am rather sure nobody in Hamburg would do it in a public park. Also not in smaller towns. Maybe if there was a nudist zone. But I think in eastern Germany it was also more common. So there are regional differneces. 😉

"Toast" is the short form of "Toastbrot", which means a special bread for making a toast. You can top it with ham, ananas and cheese to get a Toast Hawai.
it's called toast here, because the only purpose of Toastbrot is being toasted to be able to spread it with some cold hard butter, so it doesn't fall apart. I personally roast all sorts of bread when eating at home. Pizza is not cut in restaurant, because the serve it coming with fork and knife. I would reclame pizza that is precut, even when it's for takeaway, because the bottom get's soaked. I want a crunchy bottom... For checking for a free table, stand a short time waiting at the entrance and make eye contact . Hömopathie is no medicine. The less of substance there is in, the more "potent" it is called.
Well, the "English Garden" in Munich is THE exception as far as nudity in concerned. Apart from some specialised beaches, you on't see many naked Germans in public. :-)
Germans have many differences concerning the food culture. So it is actually quite common that people are willing to pay more even for less food since it is kinda a way to give it value. And the way we adress toast is kinda natural since the white bread doesn't get eaten until it is actually toasted. XD
I actually was as confused about the recurring "How are you?" when I had to train a colleague in India on a certain software. The calls always started by her asking "how are you" and she would not proceed before I had responded with "fine" or something like that. I never got comfortable with this habit actually and now I wonder whether greeting her in Telugu or Kannada (the usual dialects in the Bangalore area) would have suited more.

I think we change the clothes e.g. for the gym because we learned it at school. When we had Sport on the schedule it was a must to bring gym clothes and sport shoes. Without it was forbidden to participate.

Loved this vlog 😂 I started studying in Germany a couple of years ago and in my first semester I sometimes came in sweatpants or like flowy pants with patterns on them and every single time I got quite a few comments "oh hast du verschlafen" I came out of the habit to go out in sweatpants 😂😂 Ooh and with the burgers, you guys should try Effe und Gold in Freising (on the border of Munich) ... The part about small talk is 100% accurate, we germans don't know, don't care about small talk, we want usefull conversations or none simple as that The thing about toast is the same for me: toast becomes toast when it is actually toasted, but on the other hand it does not qualifiy as "bread" regarding to our high variety and standards for what we call bread so untoasted toast is smt in between Great content, made me smile :)
The german habits concerning nudity is going back to a movement end of 19. century called Freikörperkultur (FKK). The movement was heavily influenced by romantism (back to nature, etc) and health through sports (Turnvereine, Turnvater Jahn, Männerbünde für Sport). In the 70ies nudism was revived through the free sex hippy movement. The nudists of the english garden and Isarauen is actually very special. Sometimes I wonder whether the tourism board hires these people as a tourist attraction. Personally I also do not like the human Radlständer (butts).

The "sweetpance" part is rather simple to explain: If you are at home, you can do whatever you want. If you are outside, you represent yourself with your closing. Certain clothing has certain stereotypes. For "sweetpance" or "gym cloth" it is usually (partly thanks to tv shows) the look of "lazy, useless, poor" people. You dont have to go out dressed for a fancy dinner or something. Germany is very liberal when it comes to clothing (in my opinion at least) but there is a certain low bar you simply dont cross if you dont want people to think you are a "lazy or jobeless" person. What counts as "outside cloth" generally has a big varierty though. You can walk around like a "bitch" or like a stuck up priest, i doenst really matter. As long as you dont cross a certain low level and your cloth are clearly differentiated from a "i wear that in bed" look you are fine.
To be honest as someone living in America many people do in fact walk around in their pjs or go out in pjs particularly to school or when going to the grocery store. I personally like that people will wear whatever and no one cares because in all honesty if they are clean and tidy what’s the issue? Unless it’s for a particular event, a lot of people generally don’t care what people wear.
@@shalom5978 ok, is It because of this that there is a „casual Friday“ where you can go to office w/o a tie? 😎 I know not in general, but the company I work for has also American branches and these colleagues are very posh in clothing compared to the German ones. Casual here is more your personal style and not dictate by the calendar. And if someone comes to the office with suits, we often joke: „are you applying for a new job“.
Burgers are very very good with high quality of ingredients in it in Germany. Where were you in Germany in restaurants? In Mc Donald's? We Germans don't call them restaurants, we call them Frittenbude or just MC, we don't see them as a qualified restaurant. We make a difference. You definitely find very good and outstanding restaurants in Germany making also the best burgers you can find in the world. Where I live in Ahaus in NRW Münsterland I new directly 3 outstanding shops and haven't tested every shop now. But food in Germany is normally and generally expensive comparing to south africa but for rich countries like Germany and western world countries it is very, very cheap. The discussion nowadays is, it is too cheap, so that German or European farmers can't live any longer of it. They close there farms more and more. A bitter fact.
Having only one sort of bread named "toast" bc it gets toasted, and not understanding that the generic term bread can‘t be used because you‘re in an environment > 300 different kinda sorts of bread is kinda ignorant at best. Laugenbrot (bathed in "Lauge") Rosinenbrot (contains raisins) Roggenbrot (mainly made from rye) Toast-Brot (bc it gets toasted) Knoblauchbrot (flavored with garlic) Franzosenbrot (AKA Baguette, because it’s from France) ... and that other hundreds of different breads. So only a naive one would go to a German bakery expecting explicitly getting a Toast if asking for bread.
If you think not knowing about nudity in german sauna brought you into a difficult situation just imagine how it was for me to find out the hard way about no nudity in Sauna abroad.

I'm one of the people who eats pizza with a knife and fork because I really hate having anything sticky on my hands, I also eat ribs with knife and fork xD My family always says I'm horrible for that and that I don't know how to eat pizza the right way lmao Here in Austria we had a horrible trend of people wearing these leggins that hat a galaxy or animal prints printed all over it a few years ago, it was so ugly and everyone was wearing it, so glad that phase was over quickly xD
Whether you eat pizza with hand or tools depends on the situation. In a noble Italien restaurant you might do it a bit more posh than at a pizza takeaway outlet. And I understand the hate for sticky fingers. Some things are just not eatable by me. I live in SA for a few months nearly 30y ago and we had often piles of meat, but I avoided „caveman meals“. I don’t want to offend someone, do whatever you like, but I will save manually picking meat out of skeletons for times that really need it. And I hope they never come (even though you never knew how extended the suicide of a „short w/o shirt“ might become)

Actually, we call it Toastbrot (toast bread) because it's bread in a very wide, loose sense, but according to our tastes it is only palatable when freshly toasted. It's just not usable for anything else. That's the only reason it is sold in the first place. Toast is just our abbreviation for that. I guess the key point is that it is totally weird and eccentric for a German to eat untoasted toast bread. So we have no need to distinguish the two states, just like we don't need a special word for raw steaks. Nowadays we also have a second category called Sandwichbrot (sandwich bread). The slices are about 50% larger and not quite as rectangular. This is the closest to English/American/Dutch/South African bread you can get in Germany, but I think the only reason it is widely available is that the size is more practical for sandwich toasters. I have never seen anyone use this kind of bread for untoasted sandwiches. That would be just weird, as they taste far better with proper bread.
Maybe Germans dress up also for the normal shopping for wearing out your clothes and feel good. We don't have the sun year around so we do wired thinks to feel good like wearing nice clothes every time and give more kicks around the day.

We Americans are so fat we don’t need more food (completely my opinion)so I think the serving size makes sense to me. Regarding the bread / toast problem, it should be noted that there is a similar problem with the term "restaurant". It is absurd for Germans to call a McDonalds dump a "restaurant". It is and remains a dump. A restaurant has style and culture and quality. Guess what you can't find at McDonalds?
I and the really most people in Germany don't take Globali for a flu! That's for a minority. It's for mental health and doesn't have any direct technical effects. So obacht. And Toast is bread, that's really true but not as tasty as German variety of bread without toasting it. I love warm backed or toasted Brötchen.
Casual questions do hardly exist in german culture. If you ask a question, Germans feel obliged to answer correctly. Small talk or beating around the bush is not really the german way. We bluntly speek facts and to the point which might even be considered offensive in other cultures. Asking a question to the well being of a person is considered an intrusion, if you you are not a family member or a friend. That's why you get the confused looks.
How do you make friends without small talk though? Also it breaks my heart that genuinely being concerned about the general well-being of others who you don’t know well is considered an intrusion. Truly a stark difference from America, where you can learn about a strangers hopes and dreams after starting a conversation with the weather. I kinda like it that way but I can see how this sort of thing would make people uncomfortable.
Why should someone wear clothes, when the aim of a Sauna is, to sweat freely? Ak the Finnish people, naked sauna is the way to go, they have to know it. Why should you ask a question, if you don't want to get the answer. Why not just say "Hi"? Toast is simply, the short version of toastbread. To show, that that kind of bread is not proper bread, we call it toast. We have more than 3000 different types of bread, so we know bread! And after you toasted a slice of toast bread, it is a toasted slice of toast bread. As we have only few food, that we eat with the pure hand, we always get cuttlery with every meal. But eating a burger with knife an fork is unusual. Pizza in the restaurant, you usually eat with knife an fork.

The thing with the gym stuff is. The most peoples go after the work to a gym and doing a Workout . After that you shower your body ,than Chance your clothes . You Want not back in the your Workout clothes. Sombody meet friends after the gym and go to a Bar or somthing like that. You want not be the stinking guy in your friends Group ,you know ;). Thats is a reason for change your gym Outfit . We Want Our time good using and not 100 times drive ;home to gym,gym to home,home to friends. Aaahhhhh....that's the thing....we don't actually go to gym. Many of us, especially moms wear gym clothes to be comfortable while doing our daily chores and tasks. It's for comfort sake. When we do gym, we rather shower at home than at the gym because of being worried about athletes foot in the shower and because we avoid being naked in front of strangers in the bathroom.
the term "toast" or "toast brot" = toast bread has nothing to do with being toasted. its used as a term to describe that specific type of bread. its name likely comes from us based toaster commertials showing this kind of bread being toasted, and Germans falsely associating the term with the bread instead of the meaning of how it is heated, especially since toasters usually are portrayed with this type of bread being toasted on packages in the store. the toaster is likely a US invention. yes, people look down on this type of bread because its just unhealthy. bread can be incredibly healthy despite the media claiming otherwise, but only if its freshly made from whole grains and fermented, for example sour dough bread, which is what was mentioned here. the white bread is the extremest version of just using the non nutritious part of the grain, and then putting sugar and all kinds of chemicals into it. these types of bread have completely opposing nutrient profiles and health implications, so it makes no sense to treat them like they are the same, but the reason germans do it is because they are used to real, whole grain bread, which tastes and behaves completely differently,and is also used for different occasions. germans only use the bread they call toast bread to make sandwiches really, because the more tough traditionl bread is impractical for that purpose.
And why doesn't "Toast Brot" have crusts? What do they do with all the crusts? I love a toasted crust with butter and some OXO and cheese. (for example) but, the Germans have decided that the crusts are not included in the package! :D Everything is too relatable :D I've stepped around the corner and ran into the free willies and my in-laws are from East Germany, so when we go swimming they just strip down and change like it's nothing!

In Afrikaans, if someone doesn't use small talk to start a conversation or broach a subject, we say :" Hy val sommer met die deur in die huis." (no knocking - just barge in). It sounds as if it could mean rude manners - but no, it doesn't have a rude meaning attached to it. It's just someone who speaks directly.

Why should someone in SA talk about the weather? It is always perfect.

About Social Norms well! it depends where you are in South Africa. I used to be very offended when I came to Johannesburg i would ask someone how they are and they would just respond with just ‘’I’m fine” most of the people would have passed you to long time whilst still expecting a response. In the Eastern Cape we more like Germans, we make a conversation out of greetings it’s even worse with the elderly do not just say I’m fine otherwise they would be very offended. In the Eastern Cape people have all the time to respond to you unlike in Johannesburg people are so busy they don’t have that time to respond and passion that’s is how I got to console myself coming from the Eastern Cape.

at all. What they are saying is if you do ask the question, be prepared to hear a proper response. But most of the time people don’t ask, or are not expected to hear, or indeed answer, that question. Most of the time this is avoided. You say hello and get to the point.
On that scale what you describe of the Eastern Cape is the extreme opposite of Germany. Johannesburg would then be in the middle.
My own opinion is that for all it’s well publicised flaws, the people of Johannesburg are quite friendly for a city, and quite warm. Even towards outsiders and in the South African context.
WAIT... the thing about toast in Germany is: Its a special not completely baked white bread. You can eat toast untoasted, but seriously, that tastes terrible. If you wanna eat something white untoasted, you gonna buy white bread (available in slices). We have "million" different breads in Germany. And toast is called toast because YOU HAVE TO toast it for having the final taste. That is simple, right?

“How are you?” is just a way of aknowledging someone you deal with a bit more. It is not quite meaningless. People would normally say “good and you?” It also gives opportunity for some more small talk. It also gives opportunity for some minor complaint about the weather (yes we do sometimes talk about it, though the weather is normally less interesting to South Africans than it seems to be to many Europeans). It is an opportunity to so something in a language one does not normally speak well. For example in Johannesburg people (sensing my ethnicity) would often put this question to me in Afrikaans, and I myself would likewise often pose the question in Zulu or Sotho. (In those cases I might well talk about the weather just to say something).
This relaxed talking is some of the things I missed when I was abroad.

And Germans really know their thing when it comes to variety of bread. It is indeed quite embarassing in that context that will call that pre sliced mass produced thing bread.

As a German, I never met a person who ate Burgers with Fork and knife, so that was very new for me 😅 maybe it depends on the are?! (I am from Hamburg) It is also very rare to see people in the north eating pizza with fork and knife. I did it once in my live in that was in a italian resturant, where they had huge pizzas and everyone where eating with fork and knife. But that was the only time I did it and saw it.

In South Africa, we do have toastie bread, by Samko too. The one you showed has big premium slices. Toasties have more slices and they are thin to fit perfectly on a toaster.😂

I know people who call it toast, it’s all a personal experience.
Actually the toast bread or toast (from English toast, toast; this from the Latin participle perfect passive tostus, dörrt, from torrere, dörren) or the toasted bread is a fine-pored white bread with a thin crust, which is often toasted in slices before consumption, today usually with a toaster. You can also bake the toast in the oven. Then even a toast gets a bigger crust on the outside like all other sourdough breads. One associates the shape with toastbread. We also have boxbread but not in slices, which is similar to toasted bread. The German Bread Register of the German Bread Institute currently lists over 3,000 different bread specialties that are baked and sold in Germany every day. Probably the actual number is even higher.

This is so funny! Here in Frankfurt Pizza is always cut. How I eat it depends on where I eat it and how hot it is. In the beginning or in a restaurant I usally start with cutlery. When I eat it in a park I'll only use my hands... 🙄😂
Munich is very posh. You will find thousends of people in gym clothes on the street everywhere else. I think it has to do with social status. The poorer an area is the more people in Leggins and Jogginghosen you will see. I actually like the thought of changing my clothes after sports...
We Germans love our bread. 🥰 We have lots and lots of different kinds. "Toasted Toast" for Breakfast is fine but for a sandwich it doesn't have enough taste (imho) and it always leaves me hungry. I would rather have a Brötchen or any other kind of bread because it tastes so much better and will last longer. To be honest, I love the english sandwiches when I'm over there. But after some time I really miss german bread. I love Baguette though ... 😂 I think bread is our soft spot.
As for people being naked in the park - this only happens in Munich. I remember feeling rather disturbed when I first came to Munich. In Frankfurt you might sometimes see women sunbathing topless but it is really, really rare and more in secluded areas. I am rather sure nobody in Hamburg would do it in a public park. Also not in smaller towns. Maybe if there was a nudist zone. But I think in eastern Germany it was also more common. So there are regional differneces. 😉

"Toast" is the short form of "Toastbrot", which means a special bread for making a toast. You can top it with ham, ananas and cheese to get a Toast Hawai.
it's called toast here, because the only purpose of Toastbrot is being toasted to be able to spread it with some cold hard butter, so it doesn't fall apart.

Germans have many differences concerning the food culture. So it is actually quite common that people are willing to pay more even for less food since it is kinda a way to give it value. And the way we adress toast is kinda natural since the white bread doesn't get eaten until it is actually toasted. XD
I actually was as confused about the recurring "How are you?" when I had to train a colleague in India on a certain software. The calls always started by her asking "how are you" and she would not proceed before I had responded with "fine" or something like that. I never got comfortable with this habit actually and now I wonder whether greeting her in Telugu or Kannada (the usual dialects in the Bangalore area) would have suited more.

I think we change the clothes e.g. for the gym because we learned it at school. When we had Sport on the schedule it was a must to bring gym clothes and sport shoes. Without it was forbidden to participate.

Loved this vlog 😂 I started studying in Germany a couple of years ago and in my first semester I sometimes came in sweatpants or like flowy pants with patterns on them and every single time I got quite a few comments "oh hast du verschlafen" I came out of the habit to go out in sweatpants 😂😂

The thing about toast is the same for me: toast becomes toast when it is actually toasted, but on the other hand it does not qualifiy as "bread" regarding to our high variety and standards for what we call bread so untoasted toast is smt in between

The german habits concerning nudity is going back to a movement end of 19. century called Freikörperkultur (FKK). The movement was heavily influenced by romantism (back to nature, etc) and health through sports (Turnvereine, Turnvater Jahn, Männerbünde für Sport). In the 70ies nudism was revived through the free sex hippy movement. The nudists of the english garden and Isarauen is actually very special. Sometimes I wonder whether the tourism board hires these people as a tourist attraction. Personally I also do not like the human Radlständer (butts).

The "sweetpance" part is rather simple to explain: If you are at home, you can do whatever you want. If you are outside, you represent yourself with your closing. Certain clothing has certain stereotypes. For "sweetpance" or "gym cloth" it is usually (partly thanks to tv shows) the look of "lazy, useless, poor" people.
You dont have to go out dressed for a fancy dinner or something. Germany is very liberal when it comes to clothing (in my opinion at least) but there is a certain low bar you simply dont cross if you dont want people to think you are a "lazy or jobeless" person. What counts as "outside cloth" generally has a big varierty though. You can walk around like a "bitch" or like a stuck up priest, i doenst really matter. As long as you dont cross a certain low level and your cloth are clearly differentiated from a "i wear that in bed" look you are fine.
To be honest as someone living in America many people do in fact walk around in their pjs or go out in pjs particularly to school or when going to the grocery store. I personally like that people will wear whatever and no one cares because in all honesty if they are clean and tidy what’s the issue? Unless it’s for a particular event, a lot of people generally don’t care what people wear.

I know not in general, but the company I work for has also American branches and these colleagues are very posh in clothing compared to the German ones. Casual here is more your personal style and not dictate by the calendar. And if someone comes to the office with suits, we often joke: „are you applying for a new job“.

Burgers are very very good with high quality of ingredients in it in Germany. Where were you in Germany in restaurants? In Mc Donald's? We Germans don't call them restaurants, we call them Frittenbude or just MC, we don't see them as a qualified restaurant. We make a difference. You definitely find very good and outstanding restaurants in Germany making also the best burgers you can find in the world. Where I live in Ahaus in NRW Münsterland I new directly 3 outstanding shops and haven't tested every shop now. But food in Germany is normally and generally expensive comparing to south africa but for rich countries like Germany and western world countries it is very, very cheap. The discussion nowadays is, it is too cheap, so that German or European farmers can't live any longer of it. They close there farms more and more. A bitter fact.

Roggenbrot (mainly made from rye)
Toast-Brot (bc it gets toasted)

... and that other hundreds of different breads.
So only a naive one would go to a German bakery expecting explicitly getting a Toast if asking for bread.

Whether you eat pizza with hand or tools depends on the situation. In a noble Italien restaurant you might do it a bit more posh than at a pizza takeaway outlet. And I understand the hate for sticky fingers. Some things are just not eatable by me. I live in SA for a few months nearly 30y ago and we had often piles of meat, but I avoided „caveman meals“. I don’t want to offend someone, do whatever you like, but I will save manually picking meat out of skeletons for times that really need it. And I hope they never come (even though you never knew how extended the suicide of a „short w/o shirt“ might become)

Actually, we call it Toastbrot (toast bread) because it's bread in a very wide, loose sense, but according to our tastes it is only palatable when freshly toasted. It's just not usable for anything else. That's the only reason it is sold in the first place. Toast is just our abbreviation for that.
I guess the key point is that it is totally weird and eccentric for a German to eat untoasted toast bread. So we have no need to distinguish the two states, just like we don't need a special word for raw steaks.
Nowadays we also have a second category called Sandwichbrot (sandwich bread). The slices are about 50% larger and not quite as rectangular. This is the closest to English/American/Dutch/South African bread you can get in Germany, but I think the only reason it is widely available is that the size is more practical for sandwich toasters. I have never seen anyone use this kind of bread for untoasted sandwiches. That would be just weird, as they taste far better with proper bread.
Maybe Germans dress up also for the normal shopping for wearing out your clothes and feel good. We don't have the sun year around so we do wired thinks to feel good like wearing nice clothes every time and give more kicks around the day.

That’s so interesting.The South African sound like American it’s amazing so you guys would fit in perfectly here. One thing I agree with the German is the serving size . We Americans are so fat we don’t need more food (completely my opinion)so I think the serving size makes sense to me. Regarding the bread / toast problem, it should be noted that there is a similar problem with the term "restaurant". It is absurd for Germans to call a McDonalds dump a "restaurant". It is and remains a dump. A restaurant has style and culture and quality. Guess what you can't find at McDonalds?
I and the really most people in Germany don't take Globali for a flu! That's for a minority. It's for mental health and doesn't have any direct technical effects. So obacht. And Toast is bread, that's really true but not as tasty as German variety of bread without toasting it. I love warm backed or toasted Brötchen.

Casual questions do hardly exist in german culture. If you ask a question, Germans feel obliged to answer correctly. Small talk or beating around the bush is not really the german way.
We bluntly speek facts and to the point which might even be considered offensive in other cultures. Asking a question to the well being of a person is considered an intrusion, if you you are not a family member or a friend. That's why you get the confused looks.
How do you make friends without small talk though? Also it breaks my heart that genuinely being concerned about the general well-being of others who you don’t know well is considered an intrusion. Truly a stark difference from America, where you can learn about a strangers hopes and dreams after starting a conversation with the weather. I kinda like it that way but I can see how this sort of thing would make people uncomfortable.

The thing with the gym stuff is. The most peoples go after the work to a gym and doing a Workout . After that you shower your body ,than Chance your clothes . You Want not back in the your Workout clothes. Sombody meet friends after the gym and go to a Bar or somthing like that. You want not be the stinking guy in your friends Group ,you know ;). Thats is a reason for change your gym Outfit . We Want Our time good using and not 100 times drive ;home to gym,gym to home,home to friends. Sorry for my low Level of english, i hope you get it what i want say.
Aaahhhhh....that's the thing....we don't actually go to gym. Many of us, especially moms wear gym clothes to be comfortable while doing our daily chores and tasks. It's for comfort sake. When we do gym, we rather shower at home than at the gym because of being worried about athletes foot in the shower and because we avoid being naked in front of strangers in the bathroom.

the term "toast" or "toast brot" = toast bread has nothing to do with being toasted. its used as a term to describe that specific type of bread. its name likely comes from us based toaster commertials showing this kind of bread being toasted, and Germans falsely associating the term with the bread instead of the meaning of how it is heated, especially since toasters usually are portrayed with this type of bread being toasted on packages in the store. the toaster is likely a US invention.
yes, people look down on this type of bread because its just unhealthy. bread can be incredibly healthy despite the media claiming otherwise, but only if its freshly made from whole grains and fermented, for example sour dough bread, which is what was mentioned here. the white bread is the extremest version of just using the non nutritious part of the grain, and then putting sugar and all kinds of chemicals into it. these types of bread have completely opposing nutrient profiles and health implications, so it makes no sense to treat them like they are the same, but the reason germans do it is because they are used to real, whole grain bread, which tastes and behaves completely differently,and is also used for different occasions.
germans only use the bread they call toast bread to make sandwiches really, because the more tough traditionl bread is impractical for that purpose.

And why doesn't "Toast Brot" have crusts? What do they do with all the crusts? I love a toasted crust with butter and some OXO and cheese. (for example) but, the Germans have decided that the crusts are not included in the package! :D
Everything is too relatable :D I've stepped around the corner and ran into the free willies and my in-laws are from East Germany, so when we go swimming they just strip down and change like it's nothing!
